Custom-tailored for computer use

These speakers connect to a USB port on your computer, bypassing its built-in sound card. That kind of direct digital output means there's less potential for noise and interference to degrade the sound quality. MM-1 Powered Speakers: The Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 powered speakers bring true hi-fi quality sound to your desktop or laptop computer, transforming your computer into a hi-fi stereo sound system. The Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 powered speakers are ideal for enjoying music, video, and games from your computer.

Full-Range Sound: The Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 is equipped with two drivers; one dedicated to bass and midrange frequencies, and another for the treble. Each speaker features a 3.0" woofer and 1.0" tweeter. The MM-1 is powered by an 18-watt x 4-channel integrated amplifier. This is how the MM-1 can reproduce sound with the accuracy of a true hi-fi speaker (38Hz to 22,000Hz).

Nautilus Tube-Loaded Tweeters: The MM-1's tweeters incorporate the tube-loaded design, Bowers & Wilkins first developed for their famous Nautilus speakers, which dampens resonance and produces purer high frequency sounds.

Near-Field Monitors: All hi-fi setups have a sweet spot, the area in the listening space where music sounds at its best. The MM-1 is designed primarily as a near-field monitor, ideal for listening to music while at your computer. The Bower's & Wilkins MM-1 speakers have been electronically adjusted to provide its best sound just a few feet away from your computer screen, so you have the best seat in the house.

Digital Signal Processing: Thanks to built-in Digital Signal Processing, the MM-1 can produce big sound from a small speaker. By adjusting the sound balance depending on the signal, DSP keeps bass effects powerful and music sounding rich and detailed; no matter how loud you play it.

Dynamic EQ: The Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers provide powerful bass thanks to its Dynamic EQ technology which maximizes bass output.

USB Audio Streaming: Computer speakers normally have to rely on the varying quality of the computer's analogue output signal. The Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 is different. It streams audio directly from your computer via USB (2.0) and converts the signal from digital to analogue internally. So you will always get the best possible audio quality, independent of the computer output.

PC and Mac Compatible: The Bowers & Wilkins powered speakers perform equally well with either a Mac or Microsoft computer, through its USB 2.0 input. The MM-1 features a mini-USB type-B port, and comes with a mini-USB type-B to USB type-A cable to connect to your computer.

Auxiliary Input: The MM-1 speakers also features an 3.5mm auxiliary input, and comes with a stereo minijack cable to connect your digital music player or CD player.

Remote Control: Thanks to the MM-1's ergonomic, pebble-shaped IR remote, you will have complete control over your speakers, as well as iTunes or Windows Media Player, from anywhere in the room. The remote operates off of a single CR2032 3V lithium battery (included).

High-Quality Headphone Output: The MM-1 makes private listening also possible, thanks to its high-quality headphone output (3.5mm). As a previous owner of B&W products, I was expecting the best in sound quality from these mini speakers. Have no fear, these little things provide crystal clear sound. Bass is more than OK (some reviewers complain about their "lack of bass"). Sweet spot is quite wide so as long as you position them side by side from your monitor, you will get the best sound around. Great speakers, especially for office use!

Pros:

Deligthful sound quality ++++++ Form +++++ Sweet spot ++++ Bass ++

Cons:

As all the others have mentioned.... PRICE. Still its B&W, so do not expect cheap products from them. Also, their DAC can handle ONLY 16bit files higer rez files become truncated.... their Society of sound files come at 24 bit / 48 / 96 khz.

Great little speakers

One of my favorite purchases ever, despite the price tag (ouch). They take up very little desktop real estate, yet they sound amazing. Really well balanced, clear and warm sounding. Good imaging. For the first couple weeks I couldn't get myself away from my desk because they were just so fun to listen to. Bass is as good as you could ever get from 2.0. I find a 2.0 system useful because it is less disruptive to my neighbors and my roommates. If you want a sub and hard thumping bass of course you should not get these.

They sound best when you are close, but I've actually used them for a party and they can get the job done.

Small, impressive and modern sound

The B&W MM1s are extremely impressive for the amount of sound and range they throw from such a small footprint. They sound very modern in a tasteful way. Scooped EQ with extended highs and lows, and a massive and immersive soundstage that almost has a pseudo surround sound feel to it. For the size, I was impressed with their bass response, but I am used to a 2-channel setup and rarely listen with a subwoofer. There are no tone or DSP controls. They are very revealing, bringing out small details in the upper mid-range to high end - tape hiss is accentuated. Modern recordings can sound harsh in this context if they are super compressed because of the accentuation.

The bottom line for me, is that the B&W MM1s are "impressive, exciting and fun," which is good for non-critical listening on a computer system that you are watching movies or gaming on. After extended listening they may be fatiguing or unnatural - they are very in your face in their presentation. That said they are solid and tasteful, and not fake sounding, but compared to Swan M-200s for example, they sound very modern and "surround-soundy." For my use I want a more neutral setup for critical and honest source evaluation, so the Swans get my nod. I would go with the B&Ws for a very portable high-end solution for listening to music, movies, and gaming and their "WOW" factor.

Pros:

small and light, large frequency range, massive soundstage, good for multimedia sources

Cons:

hookup on bottom of unit seems as though it could become unsound with repeated break-down and set-up, borderline flashy and modern tone and eq

Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 PC speakers are nothing short of breathtaking. I just finished listening to Abbey Road from start to finish (2009 Remastered EMI) Sound was phenomenal. Listened to several other recordings and was not disappointed. B&W make some of the best loudspeakers in the world and these are the finest PC speakers you can but at any price. My main system is one of those audiophile set-ups. These speakers make my Mac sound like a mini version sans sub and about 10K. I have read many reviews some that concern bass response. It's here. With all the detail you get from these speakers you will appreciate your music that much more.

Pros:

A Little Pricey compared to what is available.

Cons:

Worth every single penny and then some. Thank You Crutchfield for carrying some of the finest products available.

Where's the sub? That's the first question most people ask upon experiencing the MM-1. No soundstage that enveloping, that accurate and that loud should emanate from a box that small. Of course, calling the MM-1's a abox is like calling Thomas Jefferson a political hack. Vocals are spot-on and male voices in particular are rich and resonate with warmth. Part of that is good design, exemplary construction and critical tuning, and part of it is the internal DAC that bypasses your computer's built-by-the-lowest-bidder circuitry. As a result, these speakers will reveal nuances in jazz and classical music you've never heard. After settling into the speakers and living with them a few weeks, I have to concede I miss the earth-shaking thump of sub on some material, revealing that technology can bend the laws of physics but so far. But if you are a critical listener who appreciates a warm, subtle low end over one that leaves your internal organs vibrating, then you're in luck. The MM-1's are not cheap and therein resides the dilemma for most buyers. Can you get B&W quality, clarity and accuracy for less money? Frankly, no, not in my experience. Can you get more sound for less money? To be fair, yes. As with all speakers, the proof is in the listening and each of us hears differently. Undoubtedly, you would be doing yourself a grave disservice if you make a purchase without listening to the B&W MM-1 speakers. Yes, they are that good, even without the sub.

Pros:

Quality sound, construction, styling. Uncanny ability to reproduce the human voice as though the singer was sitting on your desktop. B&W reputation for sweating the details. Amazingly small footprint.

Cons:

A bit pricey. Some will lament the absence of a sub. Placement inflences sound stage more than most speakers.

Great highs and mids which are very clear and spatially full. It is definitely, and quite disappointingly, lacking in low frequencies, even for classical and jazz.. The system would benefit greatly with a sub or the ability to add sub, or a more substantial woofer. I expect more for a pricey set of speakers, especially if they are Bowers and Wilkins. I returned them. Crutchfield handled the return with ease.

Great Product But Not For Bass Lovers

I had an earlier Bose set of speakers -- Companion 3 Series II -- go paws up. I have some other B&W products and thought I would try these. Have had them for about a week and would roll out this cliche: I have heard elements of my iTunes songs using these speakers that I never heard before. The clarity of these speakers is amazing. That said, I do miss the bass power that the Bose set delivered; it's just not there in these B&W speakers. So bass lovers beware. (Ditto if you're trying to replicate surround sound.) I'm keeping these because a) they're simpler than the Bose, b) they're more portable for when I take my laptop on road trips, c) I think they'll last longer than the Bose because d) my other B&W products have lasted 10+ years.

Pros:

- Exceptionally clear sound - Really nice stereo separation - Apparent build quality - Small size - Simple setup

Cons:

- $$$ - expensive - Weak bass - it's there but it's not strong

Great sound in a small package

I spent lots of time reviewing the various speaker alternatives before purchasing the B&W speakers for my desktop. I found the reviews here at Crutchfield to be especially helpful especially since I was not able to actually listen to them in person before making a decision. I was after a 2.0 system since I do not have room for a subwoofer in my relatively small home office space and the size of the speakers needed to be fairly small. I was a bit nervous about spending this much but since I had a 60 day window to return them, I went ahead. I currently own several Bose products (Companion 2, sound dock and Companion 3) but none of these produced the sound quality I wanted.

After a couple of weeks with the B&W speakers I can definitely tell you I won't be returning them. These are, without a doubt, the BEST desktop speakers I have ever heard and meet my needs perfectly. They have completely exceeded my expectations. The sound is astonishing, the build quality is excellent and the size is perfect for my needs. They produce more than adequate bass and the mids and highs are really on a par with systems costing far, far more. I am hearing depth and clarity in my music that is just unbelievable. They perform equally well in a small room setting and they certainly compare favorably with many 2.1 systems. If you have room for a sub woofer and feel the need for deeper bass then something like the Focal 2.1 system might appeal more to you.

Pros:

Well made, great sound, built in DAC, headphone jack takes advantage of the DAC.

Cons:

Some feel the price is high but I believe they are well worth it.

Best speakers ever had for my comp. These sound even better when used w/ Hear software . Fine tune the sound and you won't believe your ears ! Can't believe the sound comin out of these little guys ! Definitely worth every penny !

I just bought the B&W MM-1 speakers. I LOVE them!!! I cannot believe such rich bass could come from just 2 small desktop speakers. Now, these do NOT have a wall shattering deep bass that sub-woofers offer. BUT...if you're sitting at your desk, the low end is tight and punchy and the overall sound of these is really fantastic. Others have mentioned that lower bit-rate music in your collection will sound bad. I agree, it does. 256 and higher is recommended, BUT I have some music at 192 that sounds good. I also needed to tweak the iTunes EQ. I upped the highs a bit and brought down some of the low-mids as well. If I had to listen to these flat, I MAY have returned them. If you're an audiophile and you just want a pure sound with no EQ, these may not be for you. If you don't mind adjusting the EQ a bit to get them "right for your own ears", there are no better 2.0 computer speakers than these. These are still brand new and have not fully broken in yet. So, I look forward to them sounding even better. If you get these, you will not be disappointed.

It's like hearing again - amazing

I have had my B&Ws for a week now and I literally get chills listening to my music on my PC. The ranges are incredible. The whisper highs and lows are distinctly identifiable. I've heard things in my music that I've never heard before. As these are speakers for my PC I listen while I work and listen to a lot of piano, native flute, meditation music. Every sound is insanely crisp with a huge range.

When I first installed them I did have background noise and distortion, but then I reset them and it immediately went away. They are a peripheral as well as a speaker, so as a piece of hardware that needs to be recognized by the PC. You connect both the USB cable and the audio cord. The speakers bypass the internal soundcard.

I was using the Bose computer speakers which I thought were great, knowing that the highs and lows are cut off in order to create that big round bose sound. I compare this move from going from a regular to an HD TV. You just plainly hear things you never heard before in a way that gives you chills on the right music.

Pricey, yes. But if you love music and spend a good amount of time at your desk, a pretty solid investment.

Not Worth the Money

Bought these from Crutchfield after reading review after review of how great they were. In short, they don't live up to the hype. Mids and highs sound clear and wonderful, but they've got very little bottom end (say, below around 150Hz). Turning up the volume while playing any music that has appreciable bass results in significant distortion.

Second, B&W touts the advantage of going through a USB output right into the speaker, where "there's less potential for noise and interference to degrade the sound quality." Unfortunately, the signal still goes through the Windows mixer, which is notorious for adding noise and distortion. I was very surprised that they went to all the trouble of using their own DAC and processing, and yet provided you with no software to control it.

Third, they were finicky in turning on or off (using either the remote or the controls on the speaker). I usually had to press on/off more than once in either of these places to get the speakers to do what I wanted.

On the positive side, they were well made and the remote was nice. Absolutely *not* worth the price, though. I had them for about 3 weeks, then returned them to Cructhfield, which has wonderful customer service by the way. A couple weeks later I ordered the AudioEngine A5 system (again from Crutchfield) and have been *extremely* pleased.

I feel like the kid in the story of the Emperor's New Clothes, because I had read so many good things about these MM-1's; they're just not true.
