Our take on the XTC 5"x7" Speaker Baffles

by Todd Cabell

Waterproof foam baffles from XTC fit behind speakers to keep them clean and dry. They compress easily to fit the installation, and form a mounting seal that can reduce panel vibration. Use these speaker baffles along with a Dynamat kit when you install your new speakers, and you'll enjoy improved sound and performance.

These baffles will protect your speakers. In many applications we recommend that you cut a hole in the bottom of the baffle, or remove the entire bottom of the baffle, to maintain good bass response while still protecting your speaker from dirt and water damage. Call one of our Advisors if you have questions — they'll be happy to share their expertise with you.

    Features

Product Overview: These acoustic baffles are designed to be placed behind car speakers to protect the speaker from moisture and dirt which can damage speaker components. Along with providing a sealed chamber, they also form a mounting seal between the speaker and the mounting surface to eliminate panel to frame resonance. Baffles will improve door acoustics by reducing road noise and vibrations transferred to the back of the speaker cone. The baffles are pliable and can be compressed to fit most applications.

Good for protection, bad for bass

Written By ToddK, Baltimore, MD on Thursday, April 28, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with what most others have said about this product - it significantly cuts
the bass. Maybe if I had a subwoofer it would be fine, but I don't and even cutting
a large port hole as described in other reviews cut the bass too much for me.
However, I still wanted some protection because when I installed them there
was still a lot of moisture within the door from a recent rain and there was a lot of
corrosion on one of my pairs of speakers (4 years old) So after several days, I
removed the baffles and cut them so only the top half of the shell was left to form
a protective hood over the speaker. It sounded much better after that and I think
that I have enough protection from dripping water.

    Sound Improvement

Written By Tracy, Sandston, VA. on Monday, June 21, 2010

I purchased a set of these when I ordered a set of the Polk Audio db571 speakers. I have them installed in a 97 Ford Ranger pickup in the front doors along with a Kenwood HU. Like some of the reviews here I cut a hole in the back about the size of a fifty-cent piece to act as a port as I thought the baffle muffled the sound without the hole, plus it made a nice spot to run the wires out of. I actually tried my new speakers without the baffles, and then with the baffles, and again with the baffles and the hole cut out of them. In my opinion they made a huge improvement in bass response. I would highly recommend using them and doing some experimentation.

I always like to leave a comment about Crutchfield any time I leave a review and this is no different. I would like to thank Bill Crutchfield for putting together a very customer friendly customer service department, your people are the best, period! I have been treated with nothing but courtesy and professionalism when ever I have called or emailed. I don't mean to go on and on but in this day where customer service is a "lost art" it's really nice to know there's a company out there that still delivers and I would say this is 75% of the reason I purchase from Crutchfield. Plus their products are priced in everyone's range and selection is incredible. Great job!

Great for keeping new speakers alive

Written By mgb65, South Florida on Friday, July 17, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased four of these to help protect my new Infinity Reference speakers I installed in my 94 Cougar. I read some reviews here that said that these will kill the bass coming the speakers, but I really disagree. I tried the speakers both with and without the baffles, and found that the sound is better with them in there.

I will admit that I am not an audiophile by any stretch, but for what I have installed (a JVC head unit and Infinity Reference speakers) in all the stock locations these worked out really well, are easy to trim and if you hate them, they will come right out.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For those who purchase these baffles thinking they were going to make some sort of huge difference in your sound, go back and do a little more research. These things basically do 2 things very well, depending on your enclosures they will effect the bass sounds coming from your speakers. In my ford pickup when I opened up the doors and rear panels I saw raw metal all around the speaker locations. I'm thinking Gee.... metal doesn't really make a good speaker box! So after I placed these baffles in the speaker openings they immeadatly started to reduce the hard refllective sound and - yes - increased my low frequencies sounds quite noticeably! Secondly, should water or ice or dust and 'whatever else' get in there, the speakers are protected. End of story! And for the few bucks they cost I'm thinking it was well worth it and in-fact I'm getting a second pair for the rear speakers too now that I've seen the metal inside my 2006 Ford ranger.

    Speaker Baffles

Written By Alex, Washington on Monday, May 18, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The description said they would work for either 5 x 7 or 6 x 9. They are a little skimpy for a 6 x 9 . Since I was stappling them down to a shroud,I was able to stretch them to make them fit, otherwise they would never have worked for a 6 x 9.

I put these behind a set of Boston Acoustic SL80 speakers. They sounded more natural than without. I am using 300 hz bass blockers so maximum bass was not my goal. That is what mid bass and subwoofers are for. If you don't care about water protection and want to weigh your car down with Dynamat then you probably don't need these.

Baffles perform as they should-protect the speakers from the elements. There may or may not be any enhancement to the bass emanating from the speakers. Bass enhancement is not the intended purpose of implementing the use of a baffle.

    I bought this
    product for the main
    purpose of keeping
    my speakers dry and
    clean. However, i
    have noticed some
    what of a gain in
    performance from my
    speakers. The bass
    isn't louder, but it
    is clearer. It's
    like these baffles
    keep the bass from
    being distorted or
    from being absorbed
    by little pieces on
    the inside of the
    door. I like them so
    much, i just
    purchased a set for
    my rear 5x7's. I
    recommend this for
    anyone who is in to
    clear sound.

This product didn't improve my bass, it destroyed it, but I'm not looking for
bass response in speakers, which is why I'm in the middle of installing a
subwoofer. The foam baffles probably will protect against water damage
    however.

    Excellent speaker protection

Written By Rob, California on Tuesday, February 13, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all for people using these to try and achieve vast amounts of sound quality and response improvement, this is probably isn't your best bet, but this will not effect the speaker performance in a negative manner. If you are using these to improve performance try coating these a couple times with a sound deadening material. Maker sure they have already conformed to the location in which you will be installing these and that you already have the speaker wire installed into the baffle. This will make them much stiffer and rigid, and will make it much more like an enclosure. If you are buying these to help protect your invest you are making a wise choice. As with most products there are many possibilities. Use you imagination and you can come up with some very useful tips and ideas. Good Luck.

Baffle misconceptions created by the D.I.Yer

Written By curtis, Orange County, Ca on Sunday, February 04, 2007

Speaker baffles do exactly what there are supposed to do. They protect your speakers (investment) from wind and moisture, and while at times can enhance the performance the same way a subwoofer box does for a subwoofer. Don't mislead yourself by adding a baffle just to increase the performance of a particular brand of speaker. For those who have tried and have had luck increasing the performance of the unit, good for you. As for the people who have not, please try to inform yourself with the knowledge necessary to make the improvements that you are looking for, before immediately criticizing a certain product. And do not rely on input of the neighorhood kid who has been doing this for years. He may not know all there is to know as I do not know all there is to know in this field. One tip for those who are having sound quality issues, try to port the encloser. If you want to get fancy, create a port from the vehicles interior to the baffle encloser (in the same manner a blower motor (the thing that forces air out the vents of your car) is vented with a rubber tube) this will provide you a little more protection. Yes , this may involve more work than you may have thought. Welcome to customizing a whole new world of endless possibilities. If in doubt consult a professional audio / performance shop there price includes years of instruction and knowledge from componet manufactures. Have fun! Inform yourself and last but not least be SAFE!

    Terrible sound

Written By WBR, Seattle, WA on Tuesday, June 13, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm sure these work well inside leaky vehicles, but they completely kill the bass. Made my brand new Polks sound like a PC system speaker. If you hate the bass, these are for you!

This is not a reflection on Crutchfield, everything else about the installation of my order went flawlessly.

    Decreases Speaker Performance

Written By JR, Dallas, TX on Friday, April 07, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you have leakage issues, or your speakers are at risk of environmental damage, then these will suit your purpose.
I bought them hoping to clean up the sound a little, and reduce the rattle in one door. These did nothing but reduce performance. Highs from my 5x7s were not affected, but any low frequency sound suffered so drastically that I took these out the same day I installed them. The bass was simply horrific.
For anyone with an ear for quality sound, I would not recommend these.
They got to me really fast, though. I'll buy again Crutchfield!

Good protection, but doesn't really do anything to the sound

Written By zero2dash, Fenton, MO on Monday, February 13, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These baffles offer excellent protection for your speakers and (probably) keep out road noise, but otherwise they don't really offer anything in terms of better sound or bass response (at least that's my experience). I tried my new speakers with and without these and didn't see a difference; bass and treble were both the same. (I didn't have any problems with highs or vocals sounding "muddy".) I still used them anyway as protection from dust and moisture though. Very cheap...considering you're spending money on speakers, why not add some protection to give them a longer lifetime? I had to trim off a little on the corners (basically rounding them off) so they'd fit better in my car, and I used the scissors to also poke a small hole in the bottom to run the wire through, but other than that - these worked great.
