Our take on the Channel Master 4228HD

by Steve Kindig

Channel Master's 4228HD antenna can receive digital and analog over-the-air TV signals in the UHF band and high VHF band (nearly all digital TV signals are in the UHF or high-VHF bands). The 4228HD is optimized for "deep-fringe" reception of HDTV — it's one of the highest-gain antennas available.

This antenna features a highly directional design that will provide best results when most or all of the desired stations are transmitting from the same location. For clearer reception, pair the 4228HD with the 7777 preamplifier — several Crutchfield employees are receiving digital stations from 50+ miles away with a similar setup. Also, if you'd like to pull in signals from different areas, consider a rotor to aim your antenna in the right direction.

The 4228HD is classified as a Large Directional antenna. Its space-efficient design is suitable for roof and attic installations (mast recommended). For tips on selecting an antenna, and links to websites that help you locate HDTV signals in your area, check out our article on choosing and installing an antenna for HDTV. The article also includes a brief hands-on review of the very similar model 4228 antenna.

Highlights:

  • receives digital & analog UHF and high-band VHF TV signals
  • range is 60 miles for UHF (ch. 14-69), 45 miles for VHF (ch. 7-13)
  • 8-bay bowtie dipole design
  • 41"W x 5-1/2"D x 33"H
  • 20-1/2" turning radius (if used with an antenna rotor)
  • 75-ohm output for coaxial cable
  • accommodates 1-1/4"-1-1/2" mast (mast not included)
  • warranty: 3 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee
  • RG-6 cable is recommended

    Features

Overview: The Channel Master 4228HD antenna is designed for over-the-air broadcasts of UHF frequencies and high-band VHF frequencies (channels 7-13 and 14-69), both digital (HDTV) and analog. It can be mounted on a roof, on a wall, to a chimney, or in an attic. The antenna can be used with digital converter boxes or HDTV ready televisions.

Note: Many digital broadcasts still include non-HD content.

Construction: The Channel Master 4228HD antenna features a long lasting durable design with heavy duty aluminum elements and UV stabilized plastics.

Mounting Brackets: The mounting brackets and the U-bolt are used to mount the antenna to a traditional antenna mast (sold separately). The outer diameter of the mast should be approximately 1-1/4 inches.

Turning Radius: If using a rotor on the antenna mast, make sure a 20.5" turning radius around the antenna is clear of obstruction.

Grounding: The antenna and mast should be properly grounded. Grounding provides lightning protection for the antenna and your TV set.

Note: No grounding hardware is provided with the antenna.

Connections: The balun is built-in (attached at the factory) and has a female F-type connector. The included waterproof rubber weather boot should be installed over the cable connection to guard against corrosion. A twist-on threaded F-connector is also included.

Note: Coax cable is not provided, RG-6 is recommended.

Operating Range: The rated range of the 4228HD is up to 45 miles (channels 7-13) and up to 60 miles (channels 14-69), but the distance is approximate, actual performance depends on too many variables to predict accurately.

Gain: The average gain across the UHF frequency range is 12dB.

    First Class Reception

Written By Paul Z, Broomfield, CO on Friday, March 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this antenna to upgrade the HD rabbit ears I was using. After mounting this in my attic and running the scan/auto program on my TV I detected 15 new channels! Channels that I got before with 50% signal are now coming in at 100%! Most of the channels I'm getting from Denver, CO are on top of Lookout Mt (about 20 mies away) with 100% signal strength.
    Pros:
Easy Setup - Can be used indoors (Attic or even basement depending on your location) - lightweight - Very little assembly required.
    Cons:
    None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very excited to be able to cut the cable cord and get 30+ channles (most in HD) from Boston @ over 50 miles away.
    Pros:
Relatively inconspicuous on my roof and seems to be sturdy enough. Interested to see how it fairs with the blizzard we are about to get.
    Cons:
Can't say I know of one at this time.

    Awesome!

Written By Greg, Cleveland, OH on Monday, January 21, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit skeptical about trying an HD antenna, but am glad that I did!

I mounted this unit inside my attic, and feared that doing so would effect signal strength. However, I get a ton of channels and based on my TV's signal meter every channel is 7 out of 10 in strength or higher. Actually, only one is a 7; the rest are 8s and 9s. I should note that I'm in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, about 20 miles away.

The picture quality is better than my HD cable was too.

    Very happy with this product!
    Cons:
It's a bit big, but who cares since it will be mounted in an attic or outside.

    Channel Master 4228HD

Written By Anonymous, Spencerport, NY on Sunday, January 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna works great! Installed this in my attic, using older, existing cable to run through the house. It is split to three tvs, and gets all of the channels perfect with no amplifier. Now for the shipping. I received this very quickly. When I brought the box in the house the parts bag fell on the floor. There were multiple spots where the box was open, and the antenna was visible. One of the wingbolts was on the bottom of the box, and one was missing. It does work great though.

    Excellent HD Over-the-Air Antenna

Written By Duane W., Bedford, NH on Sunday, January 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this antenna in a friend's attic in a Southern NH town with a good location facing South. Most of the stations were located in the Greater Boston Area within a few degrees of magnetic heading. The average distance of the stations was around 30 nautical miles so I aimed the antenna and fixed it in position. The reception signal meter on the TV indicated a minimum of 3 bars and maximum of 10 depending on the channel selected. The quality of the 1080 HD picture is actually better than local cable and/or satellite on all of the channels which totalled 33! I would highly recommend this antenna if you want an extraordinary over-the-air HD picture for short money. Also I found the information on the TV Fool website that is hyperlinked from the Cruthcfield site very helpful and easy to understand!
    Pros:
Easy to install. Excellent reception in an attic installation. Good Information from the Crutchfield and TV Fool Websites to determine the best antenna for the location. Fast delivery.
    Cons:
    None.

Arrived quickly and delivered all the channels we were hoping to get in full HD. I installed this unit in my attic, and used PVC pipe as the pole for it.
    Pros:
    Very Powerful
    Cons:
It is large and my not fit in all attic spaces.

Not performing as well as I had hoped

Written By SteveW, Fairfield, OH on Friday, December 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is probably a very fine antenna, and the problem may be more to do with where I am, where I have it placed and possibly my TV. I don't intend on using it much, so I'm not too concerned that it doesn't perform quite as I had hoped. What's interesting is I live 18 miles North of Cinti and 40 miles south of Dayton. I get the Dayton channels much better than Cinti. I've tried turning this thing ever direction, sideways, etc. I have it mounted in my attic and run a cable down two stories to the basement TV, directly into TV. This came with no manual for suggested mounting or any information. I'm a little disappointed with that. I'm technical enough to figure it out, but it would have helped to know how this is intended to be directed.
    Pros:
    Easy set up.
    Cons:
No instructions. Box was in bad shape. Ripped and taped back together.

It works great for both HD/Regular TV and FM/HD radio

Written By Kayaker, York, PA on Saturday, December 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an amazing antenna. Despite the distance and difficult terrain, it pulls in TV stations in Baltimore, MD and Harrisburg, PA. PBS.Harrisburg is crystal clear! When fed into an HD, Hybrid Digital, radio, it is simply magical! The quality beats cable TV and internet radio - just unbelievable! Other than initial cost of the antenna, a "high end" signal booster, and a "high end" HD radio, there is no monthly bills to pay for and yet it gives you the quality of signal/programming that fee-based services (ie cable/dish TV and satellite radio) can not match. It even pulls in WCSP which is located in Washington DC crystal clear! Yes, it is one of the most pricey antenna but very worth the money. Thus based on performance, it is the best antenna that money can buy. In fact, what good is it a cheaper antenna that fails to pull in the station you need.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Vz9wMCTrJBv/p_671HDT1X/Sangean-HDT-1X.html and signal booster: PCT-MA-1015-1P this combo (antenna + booster) works for both HD/regular TV and FM/HD radio!
    Pros:
Quality TV and Radio signals of the antenna and excellent service of Crutchfield
    Cons:
A bit pricey but worth every penny - it saves you cable and satellite radio bills while giving you much higher quality of signals - and programming if you are into PBS and no commercial radio programmings.

    poor packaging

Written By David H, Naperville, IL on Friday, December 14, 2012

The antenna works fine, now that I have all the parts. I live 30 miles from Chicago at a location rated blue/violet by antennaweb.org. With the antenna and a preamp installed in my attic I receive all the local broadcast stations. My only complaint is with Crutchfield's choice to ship this item without a heavyweight shipping box. Before placing my order I had noticed several reviews mentioning damage to the antenna during shipment, so when I placed my order (by phone) I expressed my concern about these reports of flimsy packaging, and was assured that this this wouldn't be a problem. Well, it was a problem. My antenna arrived in the manufacturer's lightweight display box without a shipping carton, and that box that was falling apart and open on two sides. Fortunately, the antenna itself wasn't damaged, but the assembly instructions and bags of small parts were all missing. Crutchfield did respond to my subsequent email and shipped a set of instructions and the missing mounting hardware, but why didn't they just do a better job of packing the original shipment?
    Pros:
antenna works as advertised. Easy setup.
    Cons:
high probability of damage or loss of small parts during shipping due to inadequate packaging by Crutchfield

The anntenna was easy to install and works great, but the box is not suitable for shipping. The first one was damaged by UPS and the replacement was bent when I took it out of the box but I straightend it the best I could. The box is not strong enough for shipping and that is something that Crutchfield should look at if they want to be a mail order company.

I am a bit over 30 miles from the Atlanta stations and I am getting all the major networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and both PBS stations) and much more. I got over 50 channels, but about 8 are in Spanish and another 8 are religious channels that I do not watch. All in all I ended up with about 30 channels that I can watch. MeTV is pretty cool and the French24 channel is interesting too. There are oldies and a movie channel (Moxie). Cut the cable, you will not be sorry!

Getting real good results with this antenna in my attic. I'm about 30 miles south of Atlanta. I had an older directonal antenna up there, but this cm4228 get much better. The signal result on the televisions show much better reception. I did add the ampifier with four TV output. CM3414. BIG difference. I recommend both for a really good reception.

    Disappointment

Written By Greg Mc, Monroe, GA on Monday, April 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was extremely disappointed with the performace of this "long range" antenna. I read many good reviews, but the antenna did not pick up a single channel in the Atlanta market. I live 30 miles East of Atlanta, and I already pick up 90% of available channels with an amplified Terk indoor antenna. I guess my expectations were way too high for this device. I do not think it's a good investment unless a separate amplifier is purchased. However, there's still no guarantee it will work when paired with the antenna.
    Pros:
Easy set up out of the box.
    Cons:
Needs amplifier to pick up anything.
