Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Klipsch Reference RF-7 II

by Kristen Schaub

Top-of-the-line Reference Series II floor-standing speaker

Experience all the power and emotion behind your favorite movies, concert discs, and music CDs with the Klipsch® RF-7 II. It's the flagship speaker of the Reference Series II line, and it uses patented Klipsch technology to deliver rich, dynamic sound with sparkling highs and thrilling, full-bodied bass. Add a pair to the RC-64 II center channel speaker to create a seamless, powerful front soundstage for your home theater that'll put you in the middle of your movie every single time. And this speaker looks as good as it sounds: it comes in a stunning, furniture-grade wood grain veneer.

Grille off

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech driver design

The RF-7 II uses two light-yet-rigid Cerametallic woofers with a folded edge to produce smooth mids and tight bass. The specially treated aluminum in the cones help to dampen unwanted vibrations and reduce distortion, while integrated dustcaps add stability. The RF-7 II also has dual five-way binding posts, giving you the option to bi-amp or bi-wire this speaker for the best possible performance.

Check out the rest of our Klipsch lineup, and build a complete Reference Series II home theater or stereo speaker system. And don't forget to add a Klipsch subwoofer for even greater bass impact.

    Driver Technology

Highly-Efficient Design: The Klipsch RF-7 II utilizes a highly efficient design to produce more output using less power & energy for louder sound with less distortion. The RF-7 II is able to fill large rooms with outstanding, accurate, non-fatiguing sound that you can listen to for hours.

Tractrix Horn Tweeter: The Klipsch RF-7 II features a professional-grade 1.75-inch titanium-diaphragm compression driver inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horn delivers a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Behind the horn lies a 1.75-inch titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound.

Dual Woofers: The dual 10.0-inch woofers of the RF-7 II feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cones. Made with an anodized aluminum, these cones are strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The 10.0-inch woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RF-7 II features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

    Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 10.0-inch Cerametallic cone woofers and 1.75" titanium diaphragm compression driver are mounted in a Bass reflex enclosure which features dual rear-firing ports. The RF-7 II's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound and dual rear-firing ports to eliminate turbulence noise. A black metallic finished baffle around the horn mouth and dual woofers dramatically improve acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with either a Black Ash or Cherry wood-grain vinyl.

Magnetic Grille: The floor-standing loudspeaker features a removable magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

    Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

    Mounting Options

Feet: The RF-7 II feature two integrated front-feet and two stabilizer rear-feet with rubber bottoms so you can safely place the speaker on your tile or hardwood floors. The Reference RF-7 II also comes supplied with a set of carpet spikes so you can place the speaker comfortably on your carpet. The supplied carpet spikes add approximately 1.0-inch to the height of the speaker. The carpet spikes screw in directly to the bottom of the floor-standing speaker's feet.

Placement: The Reference Series floor-standing loudspeaker is designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speaker by following these simple guidelines.

    • The speaker requires a few inches of clearance behind it to allow its port to breathe and will sound best when they are at least two feet from any nearby walls.
    • A pair of RF-7 II loudspeakers should be equal distance from the wall behind them. It also helps to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.

    A Great Choice

Written By Joe V, Outside Philadelphia on Sunday, January 06, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I normally don't take the time to do product reviews, but I'm so impressed with these speakers that I had to pass my experience along. The application is for a ballroom in our house that doubles as my listening room as well, (1,300 square feet). I previously had two pair of Bose 901's in the space. The Bose were OK but needed to be driven loud to get any kind of dynamic range, the bass just fell off at low levels. I was prepared to spend some money and was shocked at how much you can actually spend for high end speakers. These speakers, while expensive, represent a real value when compared to a lot of the higher end speaker systems. I have always been impressed with the Klipsch product line and owned a theater horn in the 70's. I didn't have an opportunity to hear these speakers before I purchased them, most of the stores in our area didn't handle the top end products of any manufacture, so I took a chance just on the name. I wasn't disappointed. The speakers can handle low level and high level passages equally. At low levels the bass response is still audible and at high levels nice and tight with no muddiness or distortion. The highs are incredible, as would be expected with a horn, some may say too bright, but I think it's just a better representation of the music, I love it. I like to feel my music and with these babies you feel every beat nice and cleanly. I purchased the Black Ash and was impressed with the quality of the workmanship. Some say they are heavy, well no crap, don't they look at the specifications when they purchase them? The size and the weight contribute to their great sound. I also have two 15" subwoofers at either end of the ballroom with the pairs of Klipsch, but now think it's overkill but were needed with the Bose. Always hesitant to spend this much money, but now very glad I did. I have also recently started to add .flac files to my collection and these speakers allow you to hear all the detail in the passages.
    Pros:
Accurate reproduction at any level, good value compared to very high end speakers, nice workmanship on the cabinetry, impressive with the grills off.
    Cons:
I do have one, the horn and the bass speakers are strapped together at the connection point, it's actually a stamped brass piece that spans between the two connection points. I had tinned 14 gauge speaker wire that I placed through the post and tightened with the nut. This made the connection nice and tight but didn't clamp the strap under it because the wire was clamped in the hole and not at the bottom of the post. Easy enough to fix, just wrap the wire around the post and tighten the nut clam

    These speakers are great!

Written By Margaret M, Kensington, MD on Monday, September 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money, these are the best speakers I have heard. I replaced some less expensive and older Klipsch speakers that were not bad, but these are 100% better. And, they seem to get better with time.
    Pros:
You hear a lot of high spectrum detail through the horns, yet at the same time you get a lot bass and don't need sub-woofers.
    Cons:
They are heavy and big, but that is what you get with any floor standing speaker of any quality

    Best money I ever spent

Written By JonL, Columbia, SC on Tuesday, April 24, 2012

These speakers cost what to me is an awful lot of money. So I was really anxious about whether I'd be happy with them. Especially since there's no place to listen to them first where I live. The first day after installing them I wasn't sure. Something sounded odd to me. By the next day I realized that what sounded new and strange to me was the incredible amount of aural information that I had been missing with my old speakers, that I was now hearing for the first time. I can't imagine how speakers could sound better. I've had them about 6 months and I'm absolutely delighted with these speakers.
    Pros:
Incredible accuracy and detail. Effortless, clean bass. You know what they say about horn-loaded drivers: either you love em or hate em. I guess I must love em, cause I'd buy em again without hesitation.
    Cons:
Well, of course, they're big and heavy. But so what. I don't carry them around - they just sit there being awesome. Only thing I wish was that they'd use higher quality grilles and wiring posts. Sure, it wouldn't make any difference in the sound. But it's a high-end product, and the flimsy plastic grilles just don't seem to match the quality of the rest of the product. Same with the wiring terminals. They're okay, but more like what you'd expect on a cheaper speaker.
