Marantz

Our take on the Marantz CC4003

by Loren Barstow

Keep the tunes flowing at your next party or listening session with the Marantz CC4003. It holds up to five CDs, including home-burned CD-Rs and CD-RWs, plus your MP3 and WMA mixes. No matter what kind of disc you play, the CC4003 employs a high-grade digital-to-analog converter to faithfully reproduce your music with rich detail and a full, convincing soundfield. And you don't need to stop the fun when cuing up the next few albums — the CC4003 lets you change up to three discs without interrupting playback of the current selection.

Analog and digital outputs let you connect the CC4003 to any stereo or home theater receiver. Custom installation conveniences include a detachable AC power cord, an RS-232C port for third-party controls, and an IR flasher input for remote repeater systems. This makes the CC4003 an especially good choice if you're planning a whole-home audio system, or if you keep your components hidden away in a cabinet.

    Features

Aluminum/Reinforced Resin Front-Panel: The Marantz CC4003 5-Disc CD changer features an aluminum/reinforced resin front panel to reduce vibration

    CS4392 High-Performance D/A Converters: The CC4003 uses a Super-Audio CD grade 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4392 D/A converter to provide exceptional sound quality.

CD Playback Technology: During CD play, the PCM signals recorded on the disc are oversampled to 128fs inside the D/A converter and then processed by a combination of the dynamic element matching (DEM) and multi-element switched capacitors to achieve playback characterized by a high linearity.

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz CC4003 5-Disc CD Changer can play CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. The CD changer also supports MP3/WMA-encoded CD-R and CD-RW discs as well. MP3/WMA files should be recorded in ISO9660 Level 1 or 2 with a constant or variable bit-rate of 32-320 kbps (for MP3) and 48-192 kbps (for WMA). The CC4003 can recognize up to 99 MP3/WMA folders, 255 MP3/WMA tracks per folder, and a total of 999 MP3/WMA tracks per disc. This unit does not support ID3-tag information.

Display: The CC4003 features a Dot Matrix FL display. The unit has 3 display brightness settings (Bright, Dim, Dark).

Direct Disc Access: The CD changer features Direct Disc Access from the unit's front-panel and its supplied IR wireless remote control.

Disc Exchange: While playing a disc in the CC4003, you can change out the four other discs.

20 Track Music Calendar: A linear music calendar appears at the bottom of the display, and lights up with the number of tracks on the currently selected disc, up to 20. An "arrow" icon indicates the presence of 21 or more tracks. After a track has been played, the number for that track disappears from the calendar display. In addition, the tracks selected during Program Play appear in the music calendar display, and disappear after they are played.

Playback Options: The CC4003 provides the following options for disc playback:

    • Direct Search: Directly enter the track number on the remote control to play the desired track on a particular disc.
    • Track Skip: Skip to the next or previous track or the beginning of the current track.
    • Forward/Reverse Search: For searching for a particular part of the current track, you can search forward or backward.
    • Repeat Play: You can repeat playback of one track, an entire disc, or all the discs.
    • Random Play: You can play all tracks of a particular disc or all the discs in random order.
    • Program Play: You can arrange and play tracks from all the discs in a specific sequence. Up to 50 tracks can be programmed. As you are selecting tracks, the display will show the number of tracks in the program, and the total playing time of the programmed tracks. During program play, you can repeat the entire list of programmed tracks, or play them in random order.
    • AMS: The Automatic Music Search feature will play the first 10 seconds of each track on a particular disc or all the discs. When you find the song you want to listen to, you can press the AMS or play buttons for normal playback.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The unit comes supplied with a dedicated full-feature IR wireless remote control.

Built-In Remote Codes: Because the unit features five sets of built-in remote control code signals for between the unit and remote control unit, up to five CC4003s can be installed in your system and can be remotely controlled independently.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Gold Plated Outputs: The CD changer features gold plated outputs in order to offer the best connection for your system.

Digital Outputs: Two digital outputs, one optical (Toslink) and one coaxial (RCA), are provided for sending signal to the digital input terminals of a receiver, outboard D/A converter, or CD recorder.

Analog Output: The CD changer also features a stereo RCA input for analog connection.

Headphone Output: The unit has a front panel 1/4" headphone jack with level control.

Remote Control: Two RCA jacks (1 "in" and 1 "out") are provided for connecting the player and another Marantz A/V component for system remote control purposes. The accompanying switch allows you to select the remote control mode you desire: External (when the player is connected to another component's remote control jacks) or Internal (when the player is used as a standalone component).

RS-232C Port: The unit's RS-232C port supports both unit control and operating status transmission which allows central control via custom installations.

Flasher In: The unit's Flash input is equipped to allow wired control when you cannot use remote control due to installation application.

    A Disappointment all around

Written By Kevin, Washington, DC on Friday, April 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i purchased this CD player to replace an Onkyo multiple disc CD player that finally gave up the ghost after nearly ten years of continuous use. Although this new Marantz five-disc player was nearly twice the price of my original Onkyo unit, I was persuaded that Marantz's reputation for producing quality components would justify the upgrade. Boy, was I wrong! Immediately upon installation, I noted that the Marantz changer's mechanism was substantially noisier even than my old reliable Onkyo unit, and required noticeably more preparation time to play discs and/or to locate and play requested tracks. Further use presented a whole range of issues: freezing up on numerous occasions (requiring "rebooting" simply to remove the disc from the unit); failure to play SACDs (Super Audio) about half the time; and occasional skipping of tracks. Today, after less than a year from its date of purchase, the unit died completely, displaying an understated "error" message, and devouring a valued CD along with it. A call to Marantz's customer service telephone number in order to try to salvage the unit (and the CD within it) simply referred me (twice, via recorded message) to its website for "the most up-to-date location of service centers." User manual contains no description of the problem encountered, nor suggestions for troubleshooting it. While Marantz once produced fine audio components, that that day has apparently passed. Never again will I buy Marantz!

Marantz CC4003 skipping tracks from the start

Written By Steve, Newark DE on Monday, April 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this CD changer because I prefer to play 5 CDs on random shuffle for long afternoons or evenings with friends. Was replacing a 15 year old Sony. I bought this unit in 2012 but only got around to installing it in March 2013. It starting skipping from the first day. But very random. Sometimes it will play an entire disc or two perfectly then start mis-tracking, starting a song but then skipping to the next one after some jumping around and hesitating. This can happen with old CDs, brand new CDs, home-burned CD. Could play 1 CD fine, then hit replay and it gets all messed up. Seemed to happen more frequently on random but even happened on normal play. Crutchfield would not help because it was over 60 days (even though it sat in the orginal box for 9 months in a closet). Marantz customer service and tech support both had phones out of service for a week, never responded to repeated emails on their website. So I have taken it to local Marantz certified repair shop, but have little hope they can do anything. problem is difficult to diagnose since it is intermittent. Very disappointed in the quality of this product.
    Pros:
Good sound when it tracks properly. Random play feature nice for multi-CD changer.
    Cons:
Unit skipped tracks and was unreliable. No better than the 15 year old Sony I was replacing. Very disappointed

    Marantz CD Changer

Written By Slow Hand, Winchester, CT on Monday, February 11, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz 5 CD changer was received and easily connected to speakers. After review of manual, operation of changer was smooth and easily performed; unfortunately, within ten 10 days the unit malfunctioned and the disc tray opened but would not close. Somehow a CD had managed to become lodged within the unit, The changer has been return for exchange of a new Marantz 5 CD changer. Hopefully, the new Marantz, CC4003 unit will perform as intended. The associates at Crutchfield were most responsive and handled the exchange in a professional manner. All that is needed is the new unit and hopefully flawless performance.
    Pros:
    Crutchfield Support
    Cons:
Flawed Marantz CD Changer and hassle of repacking and return shipment.

    Customer Service Saves The Day

Written By Critter, Laporte, MN on Wednesday, January 02, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this unit to replace a 10 year old Sony unit that had just died. I like Marantz and found an open box unit for less than the new price. Good deal, so I ordered it. As always the unit was delivered two days later. However, what I got was a brand new unit at full price. I called customer service and they were great. Fantastic! The unit itself delivers as promised. Easy setup. It is easy to use, including programing. I'm using analog connections and the sound is great. The turntable is relatively quiet and quick. It is a large piece of equipment but feels very solid. My only complaint is the numbers on the turntable designating the disk number are rather small and hard to read. At least to a bifocal wearer like myself. Overall, very satisfied with both Crutchfield and this Marantz CD changer.
    Pros:
Easy set up and easy use, including programing.
    Cons:
Fairly large unit. Small disk identification numbers.

    Buying a dependable CD

Written By Ron, Elkton, Maryland on Monday, December 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We're happy with the new CD player. The sound reproduction is great for us, but we are not audiophiles. Having 5-discs on board is convenient for party entertainment. I read all the reviews I could find, and noted that some buyers were really unhappy after the CD player ate their CDs. Thankfully, we did not have this problem.

    Poor Changer Mechanism

Written By Ron, Carefree, AZ on Friday, December 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

On balance, I like the product very much. I purchased it to replace my aging Sony. The sound is great. The changer mechanism, however, is very poorly made and performs poorly. The aging Sony changer was made and performs vastly better. Putting aside the cheap plastic trays, the changer makes loud grinding noises, frequently doesn't go to the disc you've requested, goes to a random disc when you close the tray, and displays inaccurate information on the screen. It's just a complete joke and a mystery why Marantz would settle for such a poor changing mechanism on such a nice audio platform.
    Pros:
    Great sound.
    Cons:
    Pathetic, low-quality changer.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED. EASY TO INSTALL AND EASY USE. GREAT SOUND. TO SOON TO SEE HOW MANY YEARS IT WILL LAST. BUT SO FAR SO GOOD.
    Pros:
EASY TO INSTALL. EASY TO USE. QUIET WHEN THE DISC CHANGE.
    Cons:
HAD ONE PROBLEM WHEN I ASKED IT TO REPEAT A PASSAGE SEVERAL TIMES IT DIDN'T WANT TO CONTINUE PLAYING. I SIMPLY OPENED THE TRAY AND ROTATED THE DICS THEN CLOSED THE TRAY AND IT WENT BACK TO PLAYING THE MUSIC. I GUESS I BETTER READ THE MANUAL, HUH?

    BEST FOR THE PRICE

Written By CaptSail, Yorktown Heights, NY on Thursday, November 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I want to thank Crutchfield. Bill Crutchfield is running one of the most customer-oriented and supportive businesses I have ever encountered. His sales and support staff are absolutely the best. They are there for you 100%. I would rather buy from them then the store around the corner because of their wonderful support and return policies. You are always treated like gold, even when returning a product. I was simply looking for a 5-changer CD player at a reasonable price to replace my excellent Sony, which lasted for 25 years. I tried a few others and they all fell short. This one works just fine. Sound quality is excellent and operation is user-friendly and intuitive. So far, no problems at all. I have not bothered with any of the programming features.and doubt if I will, so can't help you there.
    Pros:
Works great. Good sound quality. Easy to operate. Nice remote. Seems to be a solidly built product. Can add CD's while another is still playing. Seems you can add two at a time, no more, as it won't rotate.although I have not tested it extensively.
    Cons:
Makes a number of disturbing rubbing and grinding noises when CD drawer is open and rotating as you put in the CD's and again as you close the drawer. I might not have purchased it based on that as it makes the unit seem poorly made.but so far all's OK.

buying a new changer in 2012

Written By Salida1048, Salida, Co. on Monday, November 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I 'needed' a new CD CHanger 'cause my over ten year old Denon didn't have an Optical In port. I bought an external DAC that required that so this justified me to look for something new. A buddy has Denon's latest Changer (which their selling now as they were back in 2006 ?) and isn't happy, so I steered towards the Marantz. I liked their three year warranty, and come on, Marantz is a good brand. Well the first thing I didn't like was the size of the tray, you're only really able to see one CD space; the next is the logic associated to going from a loaded tray to play. Whether you press Play, or Close, once the tray returns to the player it cycles around several times, apparently developing some memory, which to me didn't make sense, since what if I immediately decide to re open the tray to put in a different CD ? The reasons I decided to simply return the unit were two fold, one, the player would skip, like you'd be enjoying music, then that music would stop, sometimes for milli seconds, sometimes for several. The last time I was playing it it actually turned off in the middle of a song ?! second was the Random Mode didn't function. In a period of just three days it played once. I'm running low on 'characters left' so suffice to say, the unit looked good, felt good, just didn't work out of the box. It's the most expensive Carousel out there now, Marantz should put more thought into it.
    Pros:
Like Romney, Good Looking, but didn't work.
    Cons:
    See Pros

    Don't buy

Written By Joe, Colchester CT on Sunday, September 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first Marantz CC4003 I received instantly had problems. Every time the carousel spun around it would "eat" discs. Crutchfield was good with exchanging this defective unit for another. The replacement unit I received sounded great but started to fail about 6 months after I got it. First there would be the occasional skip. Then there was distortion while playing certain CDs. This spread and now it stopped recognizing and playing CDs all together. There must be some manufacturing issues with this CD changer being I received two bad ones. Hoping Crutchfield can help me out with a refund or exchange of some sort being 7 months can't possible be the expected lifetime of this changer.
    Pros:
    Sounds good when works
    Cons:
    Didn't work for long.

Replaced an old Sony CDP-CE-535. This CD player has surprised me with its ability to handle my CD-R disc(s), Red Book (regular CDs) and Super Audio Disc (DSD) giving them all a musically expanded sound stage. I also have the Marantz SA-8001, Super Audio CD player (single disc) and it is hard for me to hear any differences. Some Red Book cds tracks had highs that seemed a tad harsh, but one must take into account the recording before pointing to the player. Overall, very happy with this player. My set up is all from Crutchfield: Denon DRA-697 CIHD, Niles SI-2125, Bi-Amping a pair of Polk RTI-12s.Nice deal on "open box" and fast delivery from Crutchfield.
    Pros:
    Very much improved sound stage
    Cons:
Getting use to a new player.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this and was very wary as it was replacing a Carver 5 disc carousel which finally failed after 17 years. I loved the Carver and it was generally recognized as an outstanding device. Swapped this into a system with a Marantz AV7005 and MM8003 pre-pro and power amp. I am struggling to notice a difference between the two. The sound is still crystal clear and warm. I am toying with the idea of getting a digital cable to see if I can hear a difference with the higher end DAC in the AV7005 but could not be happier with the device.

    Stellar Audio; Killer Deal

Written By HiFi Again, Idaho on Friday, March 09, 2012

I'm writing mainly to respond to the viewer that critiqued this unit's sonic performance: that has to be a component matching problem. I just upgraded to a reference integrated amp, and I cannot believe what emerged! A Beethoven Violin Concerto I have heard dozens of times I actually heard for the first time: distinct multiple violins where a blob existed before; exceptional timbre in addition to the incredible resolution. And this from an inexpensive CHANGER?! If I were to get really picky, it would be to say the highs can at times seem a little harsh, but given the cost of this unit, it performs far better than I expected.
    Pros:
detailed resolution and lifelike, convincing timbre
    Cons:
just a touch harsh on some highs, but only rarely

    Marantz CC4003

I purchased this cd player so I would not have to constantly change CDs. It is easy to operate and performs as expected. I would not purchase this cd player if you wanted high quality sound.
