Alpine

Our take on the Alpine KCE-400BT Bluetooth® Adapter

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Add the convenience of hands-free calling to your compatible 2008-up Alpine in-dash receiver. Powered by Parrot, the KCE-400BT Bluetooth® adapter lets you answer incoming calls, place outgoing calls, and scroll through your phone book entries — all without ever touching your Bluetooth phone. In fact, once the system is set up, you can leave your phone in your pocket or purse when you get in the car — it connects automatically when you turn on your stereo.

When a call comes in, your stereo mutes the music and you'll hear the caller over your speakers. The included microphone uses Active Echo Cancellation technology to ensure that you'll be heard loud and clear on the other end.

The KCE-400BT also works with select 2008 Bluetooth-ready Alpine stereos. Check the "Hands-on Research" tab for compatible models. For those receivers, you'll need the KWE-460 connecter cable.

Note: Compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Highlights:

  • Bluetooth interface adapter for 2009-up Alpine stereos
  • send and receive calls with the stereo's controls (includes microphone)
  • supports music streaming
  • Active Echo Cancellation technology ensures noise-free conversations
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Overview: The Alpine KCE-400BT enables your Bluetooth compatible cell phone to sync up with your 2009-up Alpine Bluetooth ready head unit. You get full control and full hands-free functionality from your compatible Alpine head unit for your Bluetooth compatible cell phone. The interface includes a microphone and the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers.

Bluetooth Technology: Bluetooth is a wireless technology allowing communication between a mobile device over short distances. This enables a hands-free call or data transmission between Bluetooth compatible devices. Bluetooth transmission is available in the unlicensed 2.4GHz spectrum if the distance between devices is within 33 feet (10 meters).

Bluetooth Compatibility: The KCE-400BT supports Bluetooth version 2.0 and the following Bluetooth Profiles.

    • HFP: Hands Free Profile
    • HSP: Head Set Profile
    • A2DP: Advanced Audio Distribution Profile
    • AVRCP: Audio/Video Remote Control Profile

Headunit Compatibility: The Alpine KCE-400BT is compatible with 2009-up Alpine Bluetooth ready head units and multimedia units.

Note: 2008 carry-over Alpine Bluetooth ready head units are also compatible with the KCE-400BT in conjunction with the Alpine KWE-460E adapter cable (500KWE460E, sold separately).

Phone Compatibility: The Alpine KCE-400BT is powered by Parrot for expanded compatibility for many Bluetooth enabled cell phones. The KCE-400BT supports select Apple, AU, BenQ-Siemens, Blackberry, and Casio Bluetooth enabled cell phones. New software can be downloaded and installed via Bluetooth connection to your laptop to support future cell phone models.

Note: Not all Bluetooth-capable phones will be compatible.

Pairing: The KCE-400BT can be paired to up to five Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time).

Bluetooth Phone Operation: The KCE-400BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing and auto answer with compatible phones. You can make a phone call from a contact listed in your phone book using any 2009-up Alpine Bluetooth ready head unit's user interface. You can even use direct 12-key dialing from 2009-up Alpine Bluetooth ready multimedia head unit's with touchscreen controls.

    • Placing Calls: The KCE-400BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone.
      • Redial: press the phone button within 5 seconds of ending a call
      • Call History: the 10 previously dialed, received or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory
      • Phonebook: up to 1,000 entries can be downloaded from your phone
      • Voice Dialing: if you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact just by speaking the name of your contact
      • Direct Dial: direct 12-key dialing from a 2009-up Alpine Bluetooth ready multimedia head unit's touchscreen
    • Receiving Calls: The KCE-400BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming call are announced by the received call ring tone through your vehicle's speakers and a displayed message (Caller name/Phone No.) across your Alpine head unit's display.
      • Manual Answer: manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit
      • Automatic Answer: set your Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after about 5 seconds

Note: Display of Phonebook, Received Calls, Missed Calls and Dialed Calls varies from phone to phone and by your service provider.

Microphone: The supplied microphone allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free. The microphone comes with a visor clips for mounting purposes. The microphone measures 0.5625" in diameter and 1.375" long. The microphone has an attached 13' cable which plugs into the Bluetooth interface module. The microphone's volume can be adjusted from 0-15.

Echo Cancellation: The KCE-400BT's Active Echo Cancellation technology ensures the highest-quality, noise-free sound when you are on the phone.

Mute: When you make or receive a call, the audio from the stereo is muted. When using the Bluetooth interface, no other device can be used with the mute (interrupt) function.

Speaker Output: You can select which connected speakers in your vehicle to output the sound signal of your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front Left/Right. You can also adjust the volume level of a received call.

Bluetooth Streaming Audio: Listen to songs stored on your phone through your Alpine sound system with Streaming Audio support (A2DP or AVRCP). You can even get on-screen song info, play/pause, and track up/down functions on AVRCP enabled phones.

    • A2DP: allows you to listen to the music from your cell phone and displays basic song information on-screen, such as title and artist
    • AVRCP: allows you to listen to the music from your cell phone with basic control such as play/pause and track up/down of the music on your cell phone

iPod Pass-Through: Although the KCE-400BT uses the iPod Full Speed jack on the head unit, a second Full Speed jack on the interface allows connection of your iPod to your Alpine head unit (CDE-102 only) using the optional KCE-433iV cable (500KCE433I, sold separately).

Note: The Pass-Through port can also be used with 2008 Alpine Headunit's with the iPod Full Speed Jack. The KWE-460 interconnection cable and KCE-433iV Full Speed connection cable are required.

    Awesome!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this installed with my IVA-W505 and I have a iPhone 4S, and it works perfectly. Updating the phone book has some issues, but for the most part. It works, and I absolutely just want it to work. Not being able to use my phone while driving is a wonderful experience to have. It helps with safety as well. I have Music Match service through iTunes, and it plays my music outstandingly.
    Pros:
    It just works!
    Cons:
Price, but that's always a concern with anything I buy.

    Impressive

Written By Steve, Springfield, VA on Wednesday, February 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Equipment: I'm using the iPhone 4s, the Alpine KCE-400BT Adapter, and an Alpine IDA-X305S receiver.

Install: Easy install if you know how to remove your receiver to connect the adapter. Only 4 wires to connect...I simply spliced 3 of them into the existing wires (red to red, yellow to yellow, black to black) and then I connected the Pink/Black wire to the unused Pink/Black on the harness.

Pairing: The adapter paired to my iPhone on the first try and began playing music. I turned bluetooth On on my iPhone and it showed the adapter within 10 seconds. On the Receiver I went into the Setup Menu and set Bluetooth to 'Adapter'. Back on my iPhone I clicked on the Alpine Adapter entry and it paired immediately. When I turn off the car my music apps pause (most of them anyway). And it picks up playing from the same app/song on startup.

Performance: From my iPhone I can play audio from my Music app, any radio apps, Pandora, Last FM, and just about anything that outputs audio. The quality is nearly that of my direct iPod Cable connection. That means really good!

I have a simple dashboard mount for my iPhone so it sits prominately on my dash. I found that it plays the audio from just about any app while also displaying the picture on the iPhone's screen. This is perfect for GPS and other navigation apps. While using GPS the music fades out, the GPS speaks, and then the music fades back in. The same goes for when making/receiving phone calls.
    Pros:
Phone call clarity is really, really good - no echo or static whatsoever. Music quality is surprisingly great! My steering wheel controls still work (2010 Toyota Corolla S) for changing tracks and adjusting volume. I haven't had to re-pair my iPhone ever. It automatically reconnects to the adapater when I start my car (within 30 seconds) and plays music/audio from where it left off. Siri and GPS apps speaks over the bluetooth connection which make them easy to hear.
    Cons:
No album art, song or album information displays to the stereo receiver. It simply says 'Bluetooth Device'.

Product works great with my iPhone 4s after setting it up all I have to do is turn the key and it automatically connects and activatis my iPod music and starts playing the music through Bluetooth ... It doesn't show what music is playing on the sterio the only downfall... But other then that I've had no problems with the device... It poses the music and answered the phone does everything it advertises .. Great product..

    Pairing Issue Resolved

Written By JohnnyY, Glendale, CA on Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Head Unit: CDA-117 Phone: Iphone 4s Bluetooth: KCE-400bt (Firmware 311)

    1. Pair a second phone to the KCE-400bt. Check to see it's listed in the paired devices on your head unit. Doesn't have to be connected. You just need more than 1 phone listed in the paired devices list. 2. Turn off the car. Put second bluetooth phone out of distance from head unit (just in case). 3. Turn car back on and WAIT about 1 minute for your phone to pair automatically. Do not interrupt it from pairing by clicking on buttons. Just leave it alone and it will pair in about 30 seconds to a minute. If your Iphone 4s (the phone I used) says it's "connected" then it's paired and you can test on the head unit.

This method has worked for me and stays connected even after the car is shut off and turned back on.

Be sure to: -Have Int Mute off -Have your phone listed on #1 of paired device list and not #5, which is the guest account. -Make sure Pink wires are connected to each other on your head unit and KCE-400bt
    Pros:
Scrolls through Phone book, Missed Calls, Dialed Calls, Received Calls. Works with Alpine products very nicely.
    Cons:
Initial setup to connect to phone properly. Voice dial doesn't work.

Installed the 400BT behind a KCE 9886 unit. Incredibly simple install, and it works like a charm, iPod also functions well and I was able to keep my aux in through the CD changer port. A great way to add longevity and functionality to an older head unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

works very well. any issues I have had seem to be Android related, not about this adapter. streams music and makes and receives calls very well. At first the my radio (CDE102) did not seem to want to recognize the adapter, but after a few minutes after the install it came to life and has been fine ever since. My android seems to behave much better if I turn off the music streaming, and since I don't use that, I did.

Love this add on for my INA-W900BT, wish it would have come with the unit. The one thing I would watch is the price. I bought it with tax for $100 less than on here. Check your Best buy they have it and it is 48.88 with tax. It however is not on their website.

    KCE-400BT

Written By Ray J., San Antonio, Tx on Monday, May 02, 2011

I installed the 400BT to my 9886 and I love it. Even with the windows down and
the top removed, callers say they hear very little to no wind noice. Not only do I
have crystal clear phone calls but I can also stream my Pandora and other
audio thats saved on my HTC Hero. This was definitely a needed upgrade in
    my 04 Vette.

Save your money and use your speaker phone

Written By Mike Z, Sacramento on Thursday, March 17, 2011

I have the 900 BT Alpine head unit. It came with the KCE 250 BT, I wanted to upgrade so I could listen to blue tooth audio streaming, I bought the KCE 400 BT, it paired, and then didn't pair, it paired, then didn't pair, etc. Also, the head unit would not recognize my Droid phone when it did work, it would receive calls, but you couldn't use the head unit to dial out as it is suppose to do, plus it would display, "no phone connection". I had all of my sound system professionally installed by an authorized Alpine dealer, and they have tried numerous times to resolve the issue and they failed each time.

I have to say, with all the bluetooth technology out there they have yet to get it right. This Alpine is the second experience I have had with using an audio bluetooth in the car, and I have to say, that bluetooth technology is extremely disappointing. My first unit sucked, and so does this one. If I could give this a minus rating I would.

Alpine is suppose to be top of the line in car audio, well they definitely dropped the ball on this one. Save your money and use the speaker phone feature on your mobile.

    Alpine KCE-400BT Bluetooth® Adapter

Written By Gary, Arnold, MD on Friday, January 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this unit with an Alpine IVA W505 and an iPhone 3GS.

Installation is very easy, but I had a little trouble getting it up and running. There were
some initial problems getting my phone to pair which involved a call to Crutchfield tech
support and resetting my head unit. Once that was over though, I have had no problems
with it's operation. Call quality sounds great and the microphone pics up my voice
perfectly using a normal speaking volume. Nobody can tell that I'm calling from the car.

I can stream music from my phone and the sound quality is good. It does not display any
track information though and I cannot search my music from the head unit. The only
control I have from the head unit for music is play/pause, FF, and REW. I actually have to
pull my phone out to select the music I want to hear or to see what is playing.
Inconvenient, but since I was already using an iPod in my car I don't mind so much.
Function of the iPod is the same as before installation of the Bluetooth unit.

    Alpine KCE-400BT Bluetooth® Adapter

Written By TJM, Denton TX on Sunday, January 09, 2011

    Head Unit (Radio): Alpine CDA-9883
    Phone: Droid X

NOTE: the standard wires that come with the KCE-400BT are not compatible with all Alpine radios. I had to buy two wires that were compatible (one for iPod adapter, the other for the radio unit). These cost me extra.

    Pros
    - Quality of phone call is very good and can listen to MP3 and other radio applications (such as Pandora) via bluetooth

    Cons
    - I have to unpair/pair EVERY TIME I get into the car.
    - My radio unit does not allow me to do a firmware update to the KCE-400BT on my own. The instructions state that I have to take it to my dealer to have the firmware updated.
    - Cannot use the voice command - you have to use the radio phone function to rotate through your phone book to dial a number.

    Horrible Alpine Firmware Support

Written By Sean M, Columbia, SC on Friday, December 24, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alpine doesn't seem to want to keep the firmware updated for current phones. I actually ended up going back to the oldest FW I could find to get this to automatically pair with my Droid Incredible. (version 1.60 fw) I tried v2.0 and v2.51 and the phone will pair but if you shut the car off, get back in - it will not find the phone unless you cycle the BT on the phone. I have always bought Alpine head units for 20+ years of driving, but this is probably my last Alpine product. It also doesn't display any track information when playing Audio. At least it plays the audio, but it would be nice to see the .mp3 text. Update your firmware Alpine!

If it's paired it works fairly well. I have had a few odd phone reboots and one scary head unit freeze/reboot. So with my occasional light use it's ok aside from the previously mentioned issues.

    Alpine KCE-400BT Bluetooth® Adapter

Written By Al, Long Island on Sunday, October 24, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I brought this unit and it is not what I expected. It was an easy install. I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander with an Alpine CDA-9885 head unit and LG-Vx8300 phone. It paired easily but it would not stay paired. When it worked it was great. Everytime I shut the car off to do and errand and come back I would always have to pair it again with my phone, kinda defeats the purpose because my phone is in my pocket. It is annoying when I have to take it out everytime. Crutchfield was great they send me another unit when I complained about it but the other unit was the same. I would avoid this unit.

    This is fantastic

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been driving a Honda S2000 for 7 years. I can't hear my handheld phone with the top up or down. Maryland law starts Oct 1 banning handheld phones. I have tried headsets and I can hear, but no one can hear me. I have an Alpine IDA-X100 head unit and installed the KCE-400BT Bluetooth® Adapter, I use an Ipone 3Gs. It is amazing! With the Microphone on the visor with top down and windows down I can be heard at up to 35 MPH. With top down and the windows up I can be heard well at 55 MPH and OK at 65 MPH. I of course can hear thru the speakers all the way up to 65 MPH. I have always been told that a speaker phone in a convertible is not recommended--well I recommend this one. I am so pleased to finally use my phone in the car. I am still working on all the features so I can't fully comment on them at this time--It just works great so far.

    Nice

Written By Mike, Discovery Bay, CA on Wednesday, September 01, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The setup was a little quirky with my IDA-X100 head unit needing a different cord. And, I had my red-wire acc looped to the yellow hot wire so I could run my tunes with the key off. This didn't set well as I had menu probs on the head unit that required a re-set which required me to undo my acc wire loop to orig config. So, after getting that all straight, the sound quality is very good. Everything seems to work as described. I am pleased with the unit.

The BEST add-on bluetooth device there is.....

Written By Patrick, Chester, VA on Saturday, August 28, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great add on to any newer Alpine bluetooth ready receiver! Very clear on both ends, very easy to install (I think it took me about 15 minutes). Supports all of my phone features(LG Ally). Connects instantly when I start the vehicle. Far superior than the factory installed devices in most vehicles. Voice dial, caller ID is great! It will interupt the source playing while displaying the caller ID on the radio and playing a ringtone through your speakers until you choose to answer the call. Very pleased with this product. A must in states that already have a hands-free law in place. Besides, it beats those stupid headsets stuck in your ear any day of the week!
