Features

Overview: The FRD04-AUX converts the Rear Seat Entertainment port of specified OEM Ford/Lincoln/Mercury "CAN-BUS" radios to RCA level audio inputs. This adapter features a built-in audio level adjustment circuitry (from 0 to +20 dB/0.475-4.75V) which allows you to match the audio levels of the auxiliary input to other sources on your factory receiver. Note: This adapter is not compatible with vehicles that are equipped with the OEM Rear Seat Entertainment system, navigation, or factory satellite radio.

Compatibility: This adapter is compatible with some, but not all, of the radio models found in the following vehicles:

Connections: The adapter has a 14.5" cable to interface between the factory radio and the adapter; a 16-pin Molex harness plugs into the factory radio and a corresponding harness connects to the OEM cable removed from the radio; the other end has a 10-pin Molex which plugs into the adapter.

Great way to add external audio to factory radio.

Written By AlexB, Bronx, NY on Tuesday, April 09, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was very easy to install. It's plug and play nothing else. Works great I can now listen to my mp3, smartphone, satellite radio through my factory Shaker500 radio.
Pros:
Easy to install, cheaper than buying a new head unit.
Cons:
Price, could have been less expensive.

Works okay with occasional disconnects; Failed after 3 years.

Written By Josh L, Tennessee on Tuesday, October 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this item in 2008. It worked well most of the time, though the radio would occasionally not recognize it was connected and the only way to fix it was to disconnect the car's battery so that it reinitialized. Unfortunately, it stopped working recently. Now, I either get just loud scratching noise or no audio at all out of the unit.
Pros:
When it works, it works well.
Cons:
Requires occasional battery disconnects Failed after 3 years

A Perfect Fix

Written By 06FordFusion, TN on Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For some reason, the 2006 Ford Fusion came stock with an Auxiliary Button that states in the owner's manual that it doesn't work. But, thanks to P.I.E., with their adapter, it works perfectly, like it should have from the factory. The AUX button works on the panel, and it can be controlled from the steering wheel, just like the other pre-installed stereo functions. Yay, PIE!!! I highly recommend it. Thanks!

Works well when it works

Written By John S, NJ on Sunday, July 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed one of these in my Ford Five Hundred back in August 2006. Saturation of most of the FM band in the NYC metro area means that an FM modulator is still a staticky proposition. I had an initialization issue that required contacting P.I.E. directly; their ultimate solution differed slightly from the their own instructions provided in the packaging as well as those provided by Crutchfield, but it solved the problem and the unit worked. I tapped power from the 12-volt power outlet on the dash, which my XM receiver was also plugged into, and experienced a whine through the speakers when the XM was off or powering up. I rerouted the XM power cord and plugged it into the outlet inside the console and the whine went away.

The problem I have had with it is that periodically, and without warning, the radio will lose the initialization and no longer detects the AUX unit. This requires me to open the dash up and unplug the radio and AUX unit to allow everything to reinitialize. I've gotten pretty good at it and can usually have it done in under five minutes now, but it's still quite an annoyance. Unfortunately, over the weekend it quit again and this time it appears that the AUX unit itself is shot. I will be purchasing another one as I plan to keep the car for at least another year or two. The problem other users here have had with channels cutting out is one that I never encountered; hopefully that will be the case with a new one.
Pros:
Allows you to keep the factory radio and overcome Ford's short-sightedness in providing an "AUX" button but no "AUX" input jack. Much cheaper than a new headset and steering wheel control interfaces as long as you don't have to keep replacing units.
Cons:
Periodically "drops off" the head unit, then both the radio and the AUX unit have to be disconnected from power and reconnected to allow them to reinitialize.

Channel Failure

Written By Junk, PA on Wednesday, February 22, 2012

After 1 month the right channel would only work at random. Also, the sound quality was not that great. I would suggest just buying a new head unit.
Pros:
Fairly simple install
Cons:
Sound quality and channel failure

Works Great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a real easy install. The hardest part was removing and reinstalling the plastic center
radio bezell without breaking it which I managed not to do. You have to pull on it pretty
hard to get the clips to release. I installed the convertor in the plastic tray below the
retractable cup holder on velcro so it wouldn't slide around or vibrate. I cut a hole in the
end of the tray so I could connect the wiring harness from the inside which barely
reached. If I need to adjust it or replace it (if a channel goes out like other reviews stated)
then I can do it without removing anything. Works and sounds great. Switch the factory
stereo to aux and you can control your iPod volume and mute from the dash. The
convertor looks and feels cheap so that's why I posted 4 stars instead of 5. I hope it will
hold up for a long time.

Convenient Adapter

Written By Dave, Upstate NY on Sunday, November 07, 2010

While I could have upgraded the entire head unit to gain an mp3 input, I preferred the look of the factory unit to aftermarkets. Installed in about an hour. Plenty of room in the dash for the small adapter. Cables are plenty long. Found instructional videos on YouTube for head unit removal. Huge improvement over FM adapter. Adjustable gain on unit is great to compensate for weaker iPod output, however, it will clip if turned up too high with iPod on full volume. Otherwise, a great improvement to the factory stereo.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the only line-in option I found for the 2006 Ford F250 SD. The truck is easy to work on and Crutchfield's step-by-step made it easier. The reviews aren't very positive, but again, this is about the only option for the 2006. I have no issues with installation, setting the gain pot, or sound quality.

Channel Failure

Written By Tim, Baton Rouge, La on Saturday, June 27, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adaptor worked great until the left channel went out.
Checked all connections & power OK.
I have this unit running off aux power switch on dash (2007 F-250 SD).
Sometimes I can get it to work for a little while when I flip the aux power
switch ON and OFF real fast.
Kinda leary about buying another after reading reviews.

P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For Ford

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed easily but for some reason I didn't see the 12v hook up so that added a few minutes. Because of that I had the power on too long and killed my battery. Other than that mishap it works well and allows direct input at a low cost for the Ipod.

not worth it

Written By Joe, Ansonia, CT on Sunday, December 21, 2008

i installed this in my 2005Mustang GT with the factory Shaker 500 system so that i could get a line in for my sirius radio. it was a big improvement over the fm, however just about a day after the warranty was up the right channel stopped working. i should've just put the money towards a new head unit with a line in.

P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For Ford

Written By Jeffrey, Moline, Illinois on Sunday, May 04, 2008

This product does what it says it does. It connected my Pioneer Inno 2 to
the aux input of my 2004 Ford F-150 Lariet. The instructions were really
easy to follow and a call to Crutchfield made it even easier. The only down-
fall to this unit is that you get a faint whine at low stereo volumes.
Something I really like is the output strength adjustment on the unit. It
allows the user to adjust the volume of the AUX output so that it matches
the output volumes of the radio and CD.

P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For Ford

Written By Jonathon, Tuscaloosa, AL on Tuesday, March 25, 2008
Installed in a 2005 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very quick and easy installation. I was already familiar with getting behind the radio in my F-150 so in all the installation probably took 10+ minutes. It provides great CD quality sound for my iPod and XM Radio. I had been using an FM modulator but I will never go back.

The unit requires constant connection to 12v power so I simply tapped into the wire running to my 12v aux plug.

The included wiring harness appears to be of top quality but the unit itself could be made of a stronger feeling plastic. It's a small complaint; I just don't like things that feel cheap.

With that said I would still recommend this unit to anyone who wants to keep their factory stereo and still enjoy CD quality sound.

Sales Advisor and Technical Support were outstanding

Written By Loren, Portland, OR on Wednesday, March 19, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sales Advisor and Technical Support were outstanding. Both volunteered information that I used and found very helpful.

Product works great so far (two weeks). Instructions were very good over all. Omissions, throwing in two wiring splicer would have been nice, no detail with regard which wire was power and GND. Technical support knew the answer and volunteered guidance as to where to connect these to the factory wiring harness.
