Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® 1100

by Kristen Schaub

The Logitech Harmony 1100 universal remote lets you easily control even the most advanced audio/video system. Its generous 3-1/2" color display uses an innovative touchscreen menu to simplify complex system adjustments. You can even customize the screen to show just the commands and icons that you need. And the Harmony 1100's straightforward Internet-based setup makes it a snap to program.

Program your remote easily over the web
Connect your Harmony remote to your computer with the supplied USB cable to get started. Go to the Harmony Remote website and answer some simple questions about the components you have and how they're set up. When you're done, the site automatically programs your remote accordingly. Plus, it remembers information about your setup, making it quick and easy to reprogram the remote if you add components down the road.

Intuitive touchscreen controls
The easy-to-read touchscreen display features "Activity" buttons for one-touch control of your system. You can choose which icons you want on the screen, and where you want them to go, giving you complete, personalized control over your entertainment system. For example, to play a DVD, just press "Watch a DVD." The remote instantly evaluates your system, turns on or off the appropriate components, selects the proper settings, and starts the DVD player. The remote's screen then changes to show the controls you'll need for watching a DVD — like play, pause, skip, and volume.

Optional RF control
The Harmony 1100 can also send radio frequency (RF) commands in addition to regular IR (infrared) signals. This lets you control audio/video equipment that's connected to a Harmony RF Wireless Extender (available separately) whether your gear's installed in a closet, in a cabinet, or even another room.

    Features

Overview: The Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote can control up to 15 devices with the 3.5" full-color LCD touchscreen, along with backlit buttons. After setting up the remote, you can choose the activity you desire (such as "Watch TV" or "Listen To Music"), and the remote will do of the rest. The Harmony 1100 works with over 5000 brands and over 225,000 devices, so you know the remote can operate the specific equipment you have. The remote recharges in the supplied base station, preventing you from having to constantly replace the batteries in your remote.

Setup: To set up your Harmony 1100, you must connect your fully-charged remote to your computer via the supplied USB cable, and load the supplied software into your computer. The initial setup procedure requires at least 30 minutes to enter the make and model numbers of all of the devices to be controlled into the online setup application. You will need to know which components are needed, how everything is connected, and which inputs are needed for each activity. Once the data is entered, the codes for each activity are loaded into the remote.

One-Touch Operation: The Harmony 1100 uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use one of the touchscreen's Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "on", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color display. The remote will ask a series of questions, such as "Is the TV on?" or "Is the volume turned up?" in order to troubleshoot the problem and correct it.

Favorite Channels: You can arrange all of your favorite TV channels together in one spot. You can even add graphics and logos for each channel for easy recognition.

Learning Function: If your device isn't in the Harmony Remote database, you can use the supplied software to learn the codes from your device's original remote.

System Off: One push of the Off button turns off all the equipment in your system.

Flash Memory: The settings are stored in a non-volatile flash memory so they will never be lost, even when the battery needs charging.

Optional Wireless RF Extender: With the optional Harmony RF Wireless Extender (596RFEXT, sold separately), you can control devices that you keep behind closed cabinet doors and walls (up to 100 feet away). Just place the extender in the cabinet with your components, plug it in, and it automatically synchs with your Harmony 1100.

Lithium-Ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony 1100 includes a removable Lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station that keeps the remote fully charged. The docking station positions the remote at a 45° angle, allowing the remote to be used while charging.

Love the Remote, internet setup is great, could use some help on the documentation, relies on the website which is ok, not great! Works as advertised, simplifies the coffee table and even a child can use it!
    Pros:
    Works great
    Cons:
takes a little time to set up and get working

    Harmony 1100

Written By Gio, Denver, CO on Sunday, March 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a great remote. A few quirks, but I'm still learning about its abilities and found a few features that are not in the user manual. The support team is helpful and at least one call will be needed to set the device up.
    Pros:
It is a very simple remote and is a joy to use. My previous Sony remote was more complicated. My fiancé has no issues operating the Harmony 1100.
    Cons:
I have Direct TV the only downfall is the guide feature takes forever. It seems that the Harmony is learning or loading this feature every time I turn the television on.

    Makes the Complex Simple

Written By Mark A, Kingwood, TX on Sunday, May 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the easiest universal remote control I have ever set up! The software is easy to learn and the setup wizard got me up and running with the basics in about 15 minutes. Customizing buttons and adding favorite stations was a breeze. All of my equipment was already listed so no learning from the original component was required. I love the self diagnostic feature that asks if all components turned on. If something did not work correctlhy you just hit help and the remote does the rest.
    Pros:
Just plain simple to set up. Great wizard for quick basic setup. Love the diagnostic features - makes fixing that one pesky Xbox that sometimes fails to turn on a breeze to fix.
    Cons:
I would say price but for what you get I think it is a bargain.

    Nice Look, difficult to use!!!

This is a slim and pretty piece of the equipment. The setup is a pain and the lacks of flexibility. I spend two hour over the phone with Logitech to get it running. The flexibility to make custom set up is very low.
    Pros:
    Very Nice Look
    Cons:
Cumbersome to setup and use. Not Flexible.

    Hard to use

Written By J-P, Newbury Park, Ca on Monday, January 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this Harmony 1100 remote used with the rf extender. I have my onkyo 709, samsung blue ray and verizon dvr in the next room mounted on the wall that is about 20 feet from where I watch tv. The harmony is not too hard to set up and the Logitech support was great in helping this process. I set up the Harmony to use IR to the TV and RF to the extender to control the DVR, Blue Ray, and Receiver. The TV is controled well, but the RF portion through the extender is a nightmare. At first I thought the extender location was a problem, but now it is in the same room as the TV and the Harmony remote and it is still terribly inconsistant. I have spent hours reading through the Logitech help questions online over the last month and changing timing of buttons amounst other tinkering. Bottom line is this. I can't get the remote to consistantly do what I want. Sometimes it works, and then seconds later it doesn't....for no particlular rhyme or reason. On top of all this, I have had to re-sync the extender to the remote at least a half dozen times over the last month.
    Pros:
It is sweet hitting one button and having everything turn on to the correct setting....or off. Logitech support has been great once I get a hold of them and crutchfields is always great as well.
    Cons:
The remote has aged me and stolen precious time from me. It is inconsistant all of the time. Controlling the Verizon DVR is a nightmare. I will hit the menu button twenty times with no action and then hit it once and the DVR will act like it was hit three times. Changing the remote timing didn't fix this.

    Logitech® Harmony® 1100

Written By c, arvada, co on Saturday, October 29, 2011

Owned 880 before the 1100. Had to buy the RF kit to control the same units in the same place that the 880 had no problem controlling. Most annoying even with the RF upgrade some times will not turn on devices so have to manually turn on, and won't tune to channel without having to hit buttons several times. As with all logitech remotes charging station needs work, they seem to not go to charge mode without fumbling with to get exactly right so the remote will charge. If i had to buy again I would save my money and buy a different model, even though they don't look as cool
    Pros:
Easy set up compared to other remotes, looks are good
    Cons:
Horrible button response. Horrible "line of sight" to devices. Remote hard to get into charging station.

    Not the controller for everyone

Written By tonedeafdude, Austin, Texas on Tuesday, May 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as a cool factor controller for my Home video system featuring an Onkyo AV amplifier, a Klipsch reference sound system, an HD Sony Bravia TV, a DirecTV satellite cable receiver, a Samsung blu-ray player, and DVD/VHS player. I suspect any of the hand-held Harmonies (and probably other mfrs' units to boot) will not suit you any better than the universal remote that comes with the Onkyo. The proprietary codes of the DIrecTV controller will make your use with the harmony universal remote frustrating. I don't doubt that the flexibility of the Harmony remote can program a solution to make everything work, but anyone who has gotten used to a DirecTV remote, will pick it up before grabbing for the Harmony.

The DirecTV issue aside, the I-pad style remote is very cool to use, and very user friendly for old eyes (I'm 57) . The online programming interface is very straightforward, and once you get the hang of the universal remote's protocol, the unit handles all your equipment (except DirecTV, and the esoteric areas of the Onkyo) fairly smoothly. I had to remove my glass cabinet doors to make the IR get a line of site on each unit; The optional remote IR receiver may fix this.

Look at your remotes and see how many different specialty control buttons there are. The learning curve is steep, and many control options will require special programming and training for any given user. Be prepared to educate your spouse and friends on how to operate the unit.

Very versitile unit, you will need to set up carefully and check all your
configuration but once you are done it should work as designed. It is a very
good remote with tremendous functionality. I have 3 of them so setting them up
on the comuputer is pretty easy for me, the first one took a while till I got the
desired outcome. But, after programing 3 over the last few years its no problem

This remote has really simplified our entertainment system operation.Although
I've only had this remote for a short time ,it works great.
One thing to be aware of is the fact that the on line programing support is
not free forever...... ( I think 3 months) After that you will have to pay.
I guess that leaves just one question... If I had the chance to do it over
again , what would I buy ? Even at $350.00 I would buy this unit again !!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned many Harmony remotes and I must say i am dissapointed by the 1100. It
works well, it can run your entire home theatre system but it lacks the flexibility of some
other models. For example, You cannot sequence events such as turning on another
zone and switching the input to that zone while you are in another activity. I am also not
very happy with the response time with various activites such as volume adjustment.

It's flashy and looks nice but left me somewhat dissapointed as my 5 year old Harmony
remote seemed to have more functionality (until my 18month old threw it across the
    room) and flexibility.

First unit required a firmware and software upgrade along with alot of fussing around to
get an update to have it run on Windows 7 platform. All this and then the unit died!
Great care provided by Crutchfiled in sending out a new unit quickly. However, had to go
thru the "update" again. Finding it very difficcult to set up to work with newer equipment.
Still not there yet. reevaluating the effort required for this unit.

    Best universal remote around.

Written By Roy, Corpus Christi, TX on Monday, January 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had absolutely no problems loading the software on my computer and it updated with
no problems. Put in all of my equipment and downloaded to the remote. Form that point
on I had absolutely no problems making my TV change to the proper input for watching
DVD's (actually have 2 DVD players with 2 different inputs), TV, Cable and listening to
radio. They all worked first time through. Went back later and added icons to the favorite
channels. The biggest problem was deciding the icon I wanted. Since then the wife, who
is not very tech savvy has had to work the remote without my being present and had
absolutely no problems getting it to work. I would recommend this to anyone with little to
no tech savvy. I would recommend one more thing, buy a screen protector for the touch
screen. You will have to get an universal and cut to size.

    Harmony Remote 1100 is harmonious

Written By DrewSF281, San Francisco, CA on Monday, January 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, Crutchfield is absolutely the best deal for electronics. I saw the price on this and it was unbeatable during the 2010 holidays. How could I pass that up?! What I love the most is the customizable buttons on the touchscreen with your preferred icons. The only drawback I found is that when you update the remote, the settings such as the backlight duration and brightness goes back to default, so I had to set them back to 10secs and low dim. Overall, I love this remote as I can finally retire my Sony RM AV3100 as the hard buttons are finally giving out on me. I definitely recommend this remote for its lightweight and overall performance.

    Hangs & Freezes

Written By JohnD, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, October 11, 2010

The "corrected" (via the 1100's help) settings can not be back loaded to the PC's Harmony software. It does not learn from its mistakes. It even froze up and not even the Power Off button would work. It had to be reconnected to the PC via USB to get it out of "lockup!" It continues to make the same mistakes even after be corrected ( via help) during testing. Any updates from the PC undo the corrections made using help. And to "add insult" I must buy an additional piece of h/w to control the Playstation turning on/off. That negates all claims of "replacing all remotes!"
Caviat Emptor on this one ! Its WAY too expensive for all the things that IT CAN'T DO and its lack of real learning capability !
