What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Our take on the PAC SWI-JACK

by Ken Nail

Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if you need an interface to install this steering wheel control adapter in your vehicle.

You want to install a brand-name stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. The SWI-JACK interface from PAC allows you to use the steering wheel controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command select brand-name radios.

Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo eliminates the need for an infrared emitter, allowing the interface to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-JACK's failsafe memory will learn up to 12 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 3-5/8"W x 1"H x 1-9/16"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-JACK. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-JACK works with most Alpine, Clarion, JVC, and Kenwood stereos that have a wired remote control input port or a dedicated steering wheel input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Features

Product Overview: The PAC SWI-JACK interface allows you to retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles with an Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, or Clarion head unit with wired remote capability. In some GM vehicles, you can retain the use of heater control buttons as well.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing is often required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Vehicle Compatibility: The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Harley Davidson, Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles. Please consult "Outfit My Car" to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Known Incompatible Vehicles: The following list includes the vehicles that are known to not be compatible:

  • BMW:
    • All with factory-activated cellular phones
    • All with 5-volt SWC data wire at the steering column
  • Toyota: 1998-2003 Sienna vans
  • Volvo: All Volvo models

Head Unit Compatibility: The SWI-JACK works with Alpine, Clarion, and JVC radios with the 1/8" steering wheel input jack, and Kenwood radios with the blue/yellow remote input wire. It is also compatible with Blaupunkt radios having the input for an optional wireless remote, but the adapter plug necessary to interface with the Blaupunkt is not included.

Easily Programmable: The SWI-JACK can be easily programmed. You can assign the buttons on the steering wheel to any of these specific functions:

  • Alpine: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Preset Up, Preset Down, Source, Track Up, Track Down, Power, Ent/Play and Band/Program
  • JVC: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute/Power, Preset Up, Source, Seek Up, Seek Down, Select, and Band
  • Kenwood: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Source, Seek Up, Track Up, Track Down, Disc Up/FM, and Disc Down/AM
  • Clarion: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Track Up, Track Down, Band, and Source
  • Blaupunkt: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Source, Track Up, Track Down, Disc Up, Disc Down, and OK

Note: The SWI-JACK has a non-volatile memory which keeps all programming in memory, even if the vehicle's battery is disconnected.

Resistor Kit: Some vehicles have a separate wire for each of the steering wheel buttons. Use the resistor kit for steering wheel push buttons that do not already have a resistor network connected to them. The resistor kit includes the following resistors:

  • 47 Ohms (yellow, purple, black, and gold bands)
  • 100 Ohms (brown, black, brown, and gold bands)
  • 150 Ohms (brown, green, brown, and gold bands)
  • 560 Ohms (green, blue, brown, and gold bands)
  • 1000 Ohms (brown, black, red, and gold bands)
  • 1500 Ohms (brown, green, red, and gold bands)
  • 3900 Ohms (orange, white, red, and gold bands)
  • 5100 Ohms (green, brown, red, and gold bands)

PAC SWI-JACK

Written By Mike M, Perth Amboy, NJ on Tuesday, July 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The PAC SWI-JACK does what it's supposed to do. I installed it on my 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with the PAC C2R-CHY4 and new radio. The PAC was simple to configure. It would be nice is the PAC modules were a bit smaller though.
Pros:
The PAC SWI-JACK does what it's supposed to do.
Cons:
None

Too much delay

Written By Fullum, Hyde Park, NY on Tuesday, July 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works but the delay from when you hit the button to the actual volume increasing is way too slow. Then after you have hit the button it goes really fast up or down. I would buy this product again.
Pros:
It works
Cons:
Too much of a delay between pressing the button and the result on the head unit.

works okay

Written By jem, Chicago, IL on Friday, April 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This controller works well in my F150. The volume control work perfect. The seek function works okay. I could not find a setting were seek would jump to my preset stations for both radio & XM. It will either do jump to my next station for radio and the next higher station in XM or visa verse. Toss out the instruction that come with the unit & go to their web site. The programming is straight forward but does have several steps. Read them a couple times before trying to program the unit.
Pros:
My steering wheel controls work.
Cons:
As mentioned above seek only works on my pre-programmed settions for XM or Radio. NOT BOTH.

Works well, easy to program, great support

Written By Wayne, South Jersey on Tuesday, April 24, 2012
Installed in a 2005 Dodge Durango
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this device together with a C2R-CHY4. The only issue I ran into was that my specific setup needed version 2 of the firmware, and the device shipped with version 1 as the default. After a quick call to PAC support, I had the instructions I needed to switch to version 2. Programming was straight forward (I recommend getting model specific instructions from the PAC website).
Pros:
easy to program, inexpensive, works well with C2R-CHY4
Cons:
none

Installed in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing does pretty much what it is advertised to do, but it is hard to set up, needs to have a wire run to the steering wheel column in my Grand Cherokee, and is still a little touchy to detect the button pushes.
Pros:
If you like the steering wheel controls and get an after market radio, you need it
Cons:
Hard to install and configure, doesn't work perfect

Not hard to install

Written By Darren, Augusta,GA on Tuesday, March 27, 2012
Installed in a 2006 Nissan Altima
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you go to this website you can get a very good explanation on how to prepare this kit for installation with pictures. http://g35driver.com/forums/audio-video-electronics/254692-diy-pac-steering-wheel-controls-w-pics.html When I finally found this info, after intense research, it made everything very simple. The manufactures website is terrible and the video is not complete so don't even bother going there. I got this thing to work first time with NO problems in my 2006 Nissan Altima. Programming is also easy so don't let other reviewers scare you away from getting this, because it does work. Make sure all wires and resistors are tightly connected or it will glitch from time to time. Do it right the first time and you shouldn't have any problems.
Pros:
Easy install with FULL instructions
Cons:
Hard to find info on proper FULL installation steps

Works for me with no problems

Written By MikeD, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, March 27, 2012
Installed in a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The directions must be followed. They are not difficult, if you follow them. Once wired, programming was not too bad either; just make sure to take your time on programming. While you're programming, you will get a confirmation light after you press a steering wheel control button. Make sure to wait for the light to indicate that your command took. It is a nice addition to my aftermarket head unit. I did not want to lose my steering wheel controls and this did the trick!
Pros:
Works well. Does the job it says it will do.
Cons:
Take your time and read the directions in the installation. It is not difficult, it just requires proper execution of following the directions.

Not impressed

Written By Tom, So Cal on Monday, March 12, 2012
Installed in a 2006 Toyota Tundra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well...the installation was ok. I didn't have any real issues with that, but I just found the divide to be glitchy. I installed this on a '06 Toyota Tundra. I found that the biggest problem was I would have to either press the steering wheel button multiple times for the unit to change the channel or raise/lower the volume or hold the switch down. Many times this resulted in the volume raising/lowering too much or going past the intended station preset I was attempting to locate. Overall it worked, but it's a far cry from the factory set-up.

If you have a 04+ Ram, you need this!

Written By Brian, Tucson, AZ on Thursday, February 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you take your time with this, its not difficult. Crutchfield offered to help me over the phone but was able to program it myself. Tried the Metra unit before, doesn't work with the Ram's databus. Got blinking lights, door chimes, killed my gauges. Spliced three wires with this kit, did the programming, bam. Done. Slight delay on commands sent but may be more my old switches.
Pros:
Works where Metra SWC did not.
Cons:
Little complicated but if you take your time, read the directions, its easy.
