JVC

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC KD-HDR1

by Tim Sprinkle

JVC's KD-HDR1 CD player includes a built-in HD Radio tuner. There's no extra gear to install, no extra wires to worry about, making it easier than ever to upgrade to the improved reception and excellent sound quality of participating HD Radio stations. More and more radio stations offer HD Radio broadcasts every day, but if there's not one in your area yet, JVC's DiAS tuner offers exceptional AM/FM reception.

If you're looking for more entertainment options, connect an XM or SIRIUS tuner to get more than 120 channels of music, news, sports, and entertainment. The KD-HDR1 can also handle the MP3 and WMA music files that you've burned to CD-R and CD-RW discs — up to 10 hours on a single disc.

Whatever you're listening to, the powerful built-in amplifier will ensure great performances from all your music. The KD-HDR1 offers twelve preset sound curves for quick tone changes, along with an equalizer that offers 7 bands of adjustment. SRS Circle Surround Automotive© delivers convincing surround sound from your car's speakers, even from standard stereo CDs.

Use JVC's optional iPod interface to connect your iPod to the KD-HRD1. You'll be able to listen to your music library wherever you go, and the adapter will even let you control the player right from the stereo's faceplate. The wireless remote allows you to control the playback from anywhere in the car.

Hooking up outboard amplifiers? Three sets of gold-plated preamp outputs offer convenient connections for your external amps and subs, while the on-board subwoofer level and frequency controls make it easy to control your bass settings.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      Features
      External Device Controls

      Features

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-HDR1 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 200 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc.

Intelligent EQ (7-Band iEQ): This model has Rock, Classic, Pops, Hip Hop, Jazz, and User preset EQ curves. The User preset can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For the User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.4 kHz, 6 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.

SRS CS Automotive: SRS Circle Surround Automotive (CS Auto) lets you experience a natural sound field anywhere in the vehicle, unlike other sound field manipulation methods such as time delay. The SRS Circle Surround II decoder converts a stereo signal into multichannel sound. SRS Focus elevates the sound field to an optimal listening level, while SRS TruBass creates rich bass, even without using a subwoofer. SRS Focus can be applied independently to front and rear speakers. SRS TruBass can be applied independently to front and rear speakers and the subwoofer. You can choose from the following presets:

      • Type A: systems with large front speakers with tweeters and rear deck speakers
      • Type B: systems with large front speakers with tweeters and door-mounted rear speakers
      • Type C: systems with small front speakers and door-mounted rear speakers
      • User: allows you to store your own setting

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-HDR1 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

DiAS Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner, offering unprecedented analog radio performance with higher sensitivity and selectivity. You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM stations as presets. Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM). If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to "Mono" operation. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 2.5V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit has a set of 2V subwoofer preamp outputs. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and a selectable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of 90, 135, or 180Hz.

Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) or Aux Input Adapter (item # 257KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Clock Display: When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed).

Note:The amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted, and the illumination wire must be connected for Auto operation.

      External Device Controls

Optional Interface Adapter for iPod: The optional KS-PD100 adapter (item #257KSPD100) allows an iPod digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by the KD-HDR1. You'll be able to scroll through all your playlists, albums, artists, genres, and composers directly from the head unit. Song titles and other file information show up right on the head unit display. The iPod is also charged while it is connected to the KD-HDR1.

Satellite Radio: This unit supports both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio when used with an optional satellite radio tuner and adapter, sold separately. This JVC headunit supports the SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle tuner and JVC KS-SRA100 Sirius Satellite Radio interface (item number 700SIRJVC1, sold separately). The headunit also supports the XMDirect2 Universal Vehicle tuner and CNPJVC1 XM Satellite Radio interface (item number 700XMJVC1, sold separately).

Changer Controls: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

      Love this stereo

Written By mennell, Toledo, OH on Thursday, July 17, 2008

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this radio. It was easy to install (duh it was from Crutchfields) and I was picking up radio stations from Missouri from inside my garage in Toledo.

The HD opened up a lot of listening options. I was able to pick up stations further away than I had in the past. I spend a lot of my time on the road and
this allowed me to better spend my time. I loved the
mp3 option on cds. I could listen to an entire week's worth of my favorite radio program while I
drove!! I'm getting a new car soon - and will be picking up this radio again to install (if I can).

Great price for the radio. Ipod controls easy to use and self install very helpful. But HD content and reception 15 miles outside of the DC area is terrible for now, I guess eventually it will get better as time goes on.

      Good Deal

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, so good. HD radio is great, but I must say that you should do the research first. Look up online to see what extra stations you'll get before you decide to go HD. Not all towns have HD stations. But then again, some do and now we can actually get an oldies station :) The radio was an easy install and looks a lot nicer than some of the other brands. I also like that you can get the iPod cord for a great price too (a better option in my opinion because then you can keep the iPod charged). The little remote is cool too!

HD sound is music to my ears!

Written By Scott, Worcester MA on Sunday, June 22, 2008

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, the next time you plan on an upgrade to yourt system, START WITH THE RECEIVER FIRST!!! I worked from the speakers back to the amp, new line converter etc. I tried to save my factory Nissan Rockford Fosgate head unit to no avail. No matter what I did, the sound still sounded bad. I broke down , purchased the JVC KD-HDR1 and was so happy that I did. The instructions and wiring kit from Crutchfield were perfect. I lost my double DIN radio, but now I have another pocket for my varoius things and the head unit looks like a stock component from the trim pieces. Crutchfield rocks and the price of the JVC head unit was a bargain. Great unit at any price. Highly recomended. The only bad thing is the remote. I have monster hands and the remote is smaller than my thumb. Oh well. The Radio clarity makes up for the worthless remote control. Other that that I would give it a 5 star rating.

For the money and features this deck was a great choice. I had an Ipod that I wanted to listen to on my commute and the built in HD radio was a nice bonus. So far the deck has delivered on all fronts except one. The way to access menus, change settings and control the Ipod take a little getting used to for sure. I am a techy so it was a quick study for me but I can relate to other viewers frustrations. Keep in mind there is an newer version of this deck which resolves some of those issues. All in all thr price is right for the functionality/features you receive.

If you just want HD Radio this is it

Written By Wes, Los Angeles, CA on Friday, June 13, 2008

I got this primarily for the HD radio. It works great, it was fairly cheap, and the extra stations with fewer commercials are a joy. You cannot preset the "hidden" HD stations, which makes it tedious if you really like one of them. It's tough to notice any improvement in audio quality in the car in FM (already sounds good), but I found the AM improvement phenomenal - it sounded like I was in the studio, with none of the annoying humming sound.

My favorite feature is the tagging for the song names, which is dependent on station. It only displays 8 characters at a time, but scrolls for the rest - I've seen other decks that seem to "turn the page" instead of scroll the text, and I like the scrolling on this deck much easier to read.

      Replacement radio

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was just what I was looking for feature wise. AM HD has been a disappointment so far. It doesn't sync up and flashes as it detects my station is HD but not being able to receive just HD. Same with all other AM HD stations. It was the main reason I got this unit. AM is not as good as the non-HD AM radio my other cars have. FM is OK but flips to mono half the time. Checking my antenna connections to see if signals are low, but never were. Install kits were over kill. Used minimal items and wired adapters per directions which were just fine.

      JVC KD HDR1

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this radio. Its a lil tricky to get use to all the different buttons and
functions. The remote is small which is nice. The only thing about the
remote I dnt like is when changing radio stations you can only go up on the
presets..IE...1,2,3 and not back....6,5,4. And with the remote you cant
change between the HD stations. My radio sits kinda far up from my reach
in My Dodge Durango so this feature would be nice if it was on the remote.
Other than that its a great radio, great sound and good power.

The JVC KD-HDR1 is a great radio. Sounds great and has plenty of power. I have a sub to add and offers plenty of options for getting just the right signal to the amp. I haven't had time to explore all the features, but thanks to Crutchfiled, I had it installed and playing in no time. Thanks again for a great product and great service.

This radio is great. It has three FM channels, and one AM channel. It picks up the HD stations crystal clear. The HD multicast feature is awesome in some cases what used to be one station in analog broadcast is three stations in HD. I highly recommend this head unit.

      Big bang for small buck

Written By Young, Los Angeles, California on Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Installed in a 1996 Honda Accord EX
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first the deck was not impressive but after a few weeks it started to show it's true colors. Easy to use functions and sound quality along with power is outstanding. The built in HD is the main reason why I got it and it surely delivers. There is a definite difference with the HD radio. The only complaints I have are the remote, which is the size of a tic tac, and the color of the display which has like three different colors. Those are the only reasons I gave it four stars but for this price for a fully functional stereo it is a great deal and I highly recommend it for any one. I was impressed by the sound quality and I compared it to a "high end" Pioneer stereo that my friend purchased and that costs twice as much and it blew it out of the water.

If I could suggest some improvements to the manufacturer. Make the face a fold/flip down. Also make the remote at least a size of a credit card not a size of a child,s pencil eraser. And lastly, make the colors changeable on the face.

      From Stock to HD

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally went to Crutchfield lookin for a Amplifier for my subwoofer that I was just givin by a friend. While lookin at the site I seen this JVC KD-HDR1. My stock CD player had been driving me nuts for months. Giving me "error" all the time and not playing CD's that weren't really in bad shape. When I compared it to the price on other HD radios I couldn't pass up the deal and BOY AM I GLAD I DID! The Crutchfield Box came a few days later, 3 days earlier then I thought, and from the time I opened it till I was done installing the radio was less then an Hour. This radio has GREAT sound & even better when in HD mode. My only complaint is that the controls are a little complicated at 1st but once I got used to them and ACTUALLY read the manual no problems. The preset EQ is great along w/ the Surround sound makes it sound like a LOT more high end system is in my car. I have stock speakers upfront and in the back and it sounds Like I'm rolling around w/ some high end Polks or something. If your considering this radio GET IT....even if it's not at the special price you can't pass it up compared w/ the other HD radios w/ the same features for MORE $. By the way I got the AMP TOO!

      Go with newer model

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      This is a great car
      stereo, but I gave
      it 3 stars because
      of a few new
      features on the JVC
      KD-HDR30 that are a
      significant upgrade.
      I owned this unit
      for about 6 months
      before it was stolen
      from my car, and I
      loved it. The extra
      stations on the HD
      bands basically
      eliminated my time
      wasted on annoying
      commercials in the
      Chicago radio market
and gave me a lot of
      good new music that
      would simply not
      have been available
      over the air without
      HD radio.

      Anyway, the couple
      new features on the
      KD-HDR30 that should
      be a big upgrade
      over the KD-HDR1 are
      the front auxiliary
      input for mp3
      players and the
      ability to preset HD
      multicast stations.
      It seems like a
      small thing, but it
      was pretty annoying
      to tune into the
      main station on the
      preset then change
      to the multicast
      station every time
      with the KD-HDR1.
      Also, I did not look
      at the JVC KD-HDW10
      much, but it appears
      to be basically the
      same as the KD-HDR1
      but $30 cheaper (so
      I'm sure there must
      be some difference).

      Just buy it

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want an inexpensive, full featured receiver for your car, buy this!!!
The pros are that it has a built in HD tuner, many sound choices (you can
customize them), very powerful, and looks great!
The cons are, (not that important), no SIMPLE treble and bass function (
you have to press too many buttons to get to them) , maybe TOO many
sound preference choices, (again, each one you can customize), and the
remote is pointless, it is way too small.
I put this in my Mazda 626 and installation was a breeze. You simply can
not beat Crutchfield. Go ahead and look anywhere else, no
one will give you your car mastersheet, wiring harness, specific car dash
kit, tech support and superfast shipping! I have been a Crutchfield
customer for over 10 years and they have never let me down!!!
Just buy it, you will be very happy!!!

Wife was dancing in the driveway

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fun, easy installation. The HD sound was grand i.e you did not have to tell yourself "you paid for HD radio-it must be better" it is. I put in our favorite Celtic CD to test the installation of the unit and it brought my wife (aka Simon Lagree) out to the driveway where she started dncing and gyrating until she had to be taken away.
I wish they had a unit that included HD and Bluetooth, but until they do, I shall be more than content with the JVC KD-hDR1. Raybo.

great deal, great sound, great options

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      With the supplied
      wiring adapter and
      installation kit and
      antennae adapter it
      took about 25
      minutes from start
      to finish to put
      this unit in my 1999
      Silverado. It took
      a little longer to
      figure out the
      features but once I
      did it was
      excellent. The HD
      can be programmed
      into the buttons by
      finding the stations
      and programming
      them. Then all you
      have to do is hit
      one button to switch
      between HD channel 1
      and 2 on each HD
      station. The eq
      sound is amazing and
      can really put out
      the base without an
      amp. I have the
      head unit and a pair
      of Kenwood excellon
      6.5 in front and
      some Infinity plates
      in the rear doors
      and this thing
      sounds perfect.
      Couldn't be happier.

      HD Blessing

Written By Bill, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, May 06, 2008
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the HDR 1 in my car for about a week. I bought it because it was the cheapest way to make my system HD. I was hoping for the improved sound of HD to finally eliminate that staticky hiss that goes along with radio in my area. I can't even receive radio signals in my house at all. I was surprised. The HDR 1 greatly improved the sound of my system, including the cd's. My favorite feature is the SRS. The bass is accentuated to a point I didn't think possible without a subwoofer, yet the bass is very natural with no boominess. The car is filled with a clear, strong signal that is very musical. I feel like I am on the stage with the group, a part of the action.
The HDR 1 is also very easy to operate with many ways to tweek and shape the sound. I am an old schooler and I prefer sound quality over convenience. I don't like compressed sound and avoid it whenever possible. I don't do MP3 or ipod. Radio has been a big disappointment to me sound wise, but now with HD radio, I can be happy at last. The display is easy to read, and with the HD radio's display of the song and group title I can finally get the info that DJ's have stopped giving over the years. I was expecting to spend around $600 to upgrade to HD. I never thought I would greatly improve my system by replacing my $300 Pioneer receiver with a less expensive reciever, but there it is. What a country. If you are in an area that has HD radio, buy this receiver!
