Epson

Our take on the Epson PowerLite® Home Cinema 8350

by Steve Kindig

This 1080p projector will blow your mind without blowing your budget
Epson's 8350 is one of the best bang-for-the-buck projectors you can buy. Its razor-sharp, high-contrast picture will please even serious videophiles. Blu-ray movies, high-def sports and video games look spectacular. Plus, the 8350's versatile design and picture adjustments make it easy to turn almost any room into a home theater that will wow your family and friends.

Epson's 3-LCD technology produces accurate, lifelike colors
Epson has been refining their 3-chip LCD imaging system for years, and the 8350 uses their most advanced technology yet. This 3-chip design uses separate red, green, and blue image chips to produce accurate, deeply-saturated colors. Each chip has full 1080p resolution so that every scene looks crisp and three-dimensional, with lifelike textures and details.

A picture that looks great in real-world rooms, not just in "caves"
Most projectors perform best in a totally-darkened room, and the 8350 is no exception. However, thanks to its impressive light output, it also works great in rooms with some light from windows or lamps. In fact, the projector's out-of-the-box picture settings are intended for rooms with some light. If you can make your room really dark, you'll want to turn on the 8350's "auto iris" feature, which monitors the video signal and adjusts light output 60 times per second, optimizing black level and contrast for each scene. With this projector, you can count on a clear, detailed picture day or night.

Flexible placement and hookup options
When it comes to placement options, the 8350 is about as flexible as it gets. It will project a flawless picture when placed anywhere from a low coffee table, to a ceiling-mount, to a shelf mounted on the rear wall of your room. Horizontal and vertical "lens shift" allow you to position the projector off-center and still get a perfectly true image. A versatile set of connections includes two HDMI inputs and one component video so you can hook up three high-def video sources.

For optimum performance, a separate projection screen is recommended.

Features

C²Fine, 3LCD, 3-chip Technology: The Epson Home Cinema 8350 features C²Fine 12-bit technology and 3LCD, 3-chip technology to give you rich, vibrant images for enjoying spectacular movies, games, and sporting events in your home, or to deliver sizzling business presentations at the office. This technology requires 25% less electricity per lumen of brightness when compared to 1-chip DLP projectors.

Projection Lamp: The projector uses an energy-efficient E-TORL 200-watt Ultra High Efficiency (UHE) lamp with a life span of approximately 4000 hours in the Normal Mode. In the ECO mode, the life span is increased to approximately 5000 hours. The lamp (Part # V13H010L49) and air filter (Part # V13H134A21) are the only user-serviceable parts.

Light Output: In the normal mode, the Home Cinema 8350 outputs 2000 lumens of white light and 2000 lumens of color light for bright, balanced colorful images. The white light output is measured using ISO 21118, a more rigid standard than the ANSI lumens rating used by many competitors. The projector is capable of a dynamic contrast ratio up to 50000:1.

Native Resolution/Resizing: The Home Cinema 8350 has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio), and is capable of 1080p Full High Definition performance. You can resize your images by changing the aspect ratio to 4:3 or 16:9.

Multiple Sources: The Home Cinema 8350 has inputs for multiple sources to give you lots of choices. For connecting to your video equipment, the unit features two HDMI (Ver.1.3) inputs, a component video input, an S-Video input, and a composite video input. You can also connect your computer to the projector via the VGA input. Two loops are provided on the back panel to provide anchor points for securing the connecting cables with commercially available cable ties.

Compatible Video Formats: The projector supports analog video in NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats, and automatically adjusts to the incoming signals. It can receive these formats as composite video, S-video, or component video. The projector also supports digital video (SDTV, HDTV) through the HDMI and component video ports. The following resolutions can be displayed:

  • Composite Video or S-Video:
    • NTSC: 720 x 480
    • PAL/SECAM: 720 x 576
  • Component Video:
    • SDTV: 480i, 576i, 480p, 576p
    • HDTV: 720p, 1080i, 1080p
  • HDMI:
    • VGA: 640 x 480
    • SDTV: 480i, 576i, 480p, 576p
    • HDTV: 720p, 1080i, 1080p
  • Analog RGB (computer display):
    • VGA: 640 x 480
    • SVGA: 800 x 600
    • XGA: 1024 x 768
    • SXGA: 1152 x 864, 1280 x 960, 1208 x 1024
    • WXGA: 1280 x 768, 1360 x 768, 1280 x 800
    • Mac: 640 x 480 (Mac13"), 832 x 624 (Mac16"), 1024 x 768 (Mac19"), 1152 x 870 (Mac21")

Control Inputs: The projector has a 9-pin RS-232C port for connecting to an AV Controller. In addition, there is a 3.5mm mini-jack port that outputs a 12-volt DC signal when the projector is turned on. This lets a central control system monitor whether the projector is on or off, and can be used to raise or lower your projector screen automatically when the projector is in use.

Color Modes: The Home Cinema 8350 offers five color modes to optimize viewing for different environments and image content. The Color Mode adjusts the brightness, contrast, and color for the best possible picture. A different color mode can be selected for each input source. You can select from these Color Modes:

  • Dynamic: for projecting the brightest picture available
  • Living Room: for watching television programs during the day
  • Natural: for projecting natural, accurate colors in a dimly lit room
  • Cinema: for viewing movies in a dimly lit room
  • x.v.Color: for the most natural color reproduction when viewing movies through HDMI

Advanced Color Adjustments: You can adjust the gamma and individual RGBCMY color tones using the remote control. There are five gamma settings to choose from (2.0 to 2.4), or you can customize your own settings from your image or a displayed graph. You can also individually adjust the hue, saturation, and brightness for each of the red (R), green (G), blue (B), cyan (C), magenta (M), and yellow (Y) components.

Note: These adjustments are not available when the Color Mode is set to x.v.Color.

Auto Iris: The Home Cinema 8350 features an advanced, high-speed auto iris function that adjusts the light output based on the gamma and black/white levels of your projected content up to 60 times per second.

Lens: The projector's Fujinon OptiCinema 2.1x projection lens is a precision, high-quality, optical-grade system. It offers excellent picture uniformity and clarity across the screen. If the projector cannot be placed perfectly centered between the top and bottom of the screen, you can use the lens shift dials to reposition the image. The top-mounted lens shift controls off approximately 96% vertical and 47% horizontal lens shift without image distortion.

Adjustable Image Size: The Home Cinema 8350 projector can produce an image that is adjustable between 30" and 300" (measured diagonally).

Lens Projection Distance: The projector's adjustable lens provides a wide range of placement possibilities for a given screen size. The projection distance (distance from lens to screen) range is 2.85' to 62.83'. The distance for several screen sizes at 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios are given below:

Screen Size Projection Distance (in feet)
16:9 4:3
30" 2.8 to 6.2 3.5 to 7.6
40" 3.8 to 8.3 4.7 to 10.1
60" 5.8 to 12.5 7.1 to 15.3
80" 7.8 to 16.7 9.6 to 20.4
100" 9.8 to 20.9 12 to 25.5
120" 11.8 to 25.1 14.4 to 30.7
150" 14.7 to 31.4 18 to 38.4
200" 19.7 to 41.8 24.2 to 51.3

Controls

Projector Controls: The projector features controls on the top, front, rear and one side. The controls include:

  • Top Panel:
    • Power: turns projector on or off
    • Source: switches the video input source
    • Lens Shift: rotary dials for horizontal and vertical lens shift
    • Indicators: LEDs indicate power on (inside power button), lamp on, and temperature warning
  • Front (on lens): zoom ring and focus ring
  • Side Panel:
    • Menu: displays the menus
    • Escape: exits the current menu item
    • Menu Navigation: left, right, up, down, and enter buttons for navigating and selecting menu items

    • Main Power Switch: turns off power to the projector (must be on in order for the top panel power button to operate)

Remote Control: In addition to the control panel, the projector can be controlled by the supplied wireless remote control, which has a range of approximately 30 feet. The projector has infrared receivers on the front and rear to give you control from most anywhere in the room.

Sleep Mode: The projector turns off automatically when no video signal is received for a preset amount of time. You can set the sleep mode to 5, 10, or 30 minutes.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The Home Cinema 8350 can be placed on a tabletop or inverted and mounted on the ceiling. It can be used for front or rear projection. For tabletop use, you can adjust the image position by raising or lowering the two front feet. For ceiling mounting, you will need an optional projector ceiling mount. Five 4mm threaded screw holes are provided on the bottom for a ceiling mount. A commercially-available Kensington security lock can be attached to the unit to prevent theft when installed in a public location.

Warranty Information

Warranty and Extra Care Home Service: The projector is covered by a 2-year parts and labor warranty, while the lamp is covered for 90 days. Included with the warranty, Epson offers Extra Care Home Service. A replacement unit (in most cases, a refurbished unit) will be shipped to you immediately. (A credit card is required for security deposit.) If it's important that you receive your original projector back, you should use the basic carry-in service instead of Home Service.

Beautiful Performance

Written By JK, Windsor, VT on Thursday, March 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mounted this machine on the ceiling and hung a 92" DaLite screen. The setup was as easy as could be. I loaded a blu ray and could barely beleive my eyes! If you can imagine watching a giant hi-def LCD screen in your home, that's the effect this projector had on me. Really powerful performance for the price.
Pros:
Incredible value vs. performance. Wide selection of illumination and color temp. settings
Cons:
Only drawback will be eventually replacing the light source as is needed in any projector.

Bright Visions

Written By Leather Harold, Biloxi MS on Saturday, February 11, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I admit it. I've been a video resistor for decades, but love classic films. A more recent discovery is specialty videos, particularly railroad documentaries. I tried them on my old flat screen 30-inch "TeeVee". Okay, but yucky sound. But I had a computer connected to the audio inputs of my component stereo system, and it had a DVD player, but an even tinier 19 inch monitor. Well, the sound was earthshaking, but the image was just small.

So I talked to the good folks at Crutchfield. I didn't want to spend thousands on a wall-sized TV with lots of capabilities I'd never use, but what about a projector? We soon decided that the 8350 was the model for me.

I searched my garage loft, and finally pulled out a sixty-year old Army Signal Corps surplus movie screen, huge thing with what I calculated as an 82 inch diagonal (4:3 ratio). The Epson arrived, and I put in the Animusic DVD (it's a great Video/audio system test) and something beyond wow was the result!. Bright, clean images with sharp detail and good, full color. Why did I wait so long to do this? Thanks so much Crutchfield!
Pros:
Bright, clean images, easy alignment and setup, lots of input choices
Cons:
That is an extremely bright lamp driving this thing. Believe them when they say don't look into it. Don't even walk by it without averting your eyes!

Best projector for the money

Written By TheRealDonatello, Hawthorne, NJ on Sunday, January 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Couldn't be happier with this projector. In the right setting, the picture quality is equivalent to that of any display I've seen; LCD, LED, or Plasma.

I have mine set up in the basement, which is pretty dark to begin with, projecting onto a 96" fixed screen. Most people think it's a 96" LCD screen initially until they see the projector. It's that good.

Even with all the lights on, the picture is still clearly visible, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend putting this or any other projector in a well lit area unless absolutely necessary. This projector does have a color mode that combats some of the washout produced by light, but it's certainly much better in the dark.

All-in-All, this projector and a decent screen to project on to will give you a top of the line experience at a middle of the line price.
Pros:
- price - much more affordable than a standard LCD, LED, or Plasma. - quiet - you won't even hear it running - picture quality - it will exceed your expectations
Cons:
- lighting - best in a dark room, but this is a problem inherent to all projectors, so don't single this one out

Absolutely Awesome!

Written By Ted K, Vinton, Iowa on Thursday, December 15, 2011

I recently traveled to my nephew's home for a week long vacation, and to help him set up his new home theater. He had it located in a dedicated room in his basement. We calibrated the audio levels quickly using an analog audio level meter. A few tweaks later, we were in business. I own a Sony VPL-VW 50 Pearl projector that originally sold for $5,000. My nephew bought an Epson 8350. I was skeptical at first, but I was very impressed by its picture. He paid about a fourth what I did, and his Epson's picture totally blew my Sony out of the water! Great blacks, great color, and 2,000 lumens, compared to my 1,000. It does not have a motorized zoom and focus, which can make it a bit trial-and-error to position and set up. The bulb on my Sony is due for replacement, but I may consider an Epson 8350 instead. I am a retired broadcast engineer with 37 years experience. I was involved with system installation and calibration. Let me tell you, that for the bucks, the 8350 looks GOOD!

Best Projector (for the money)

Written By Kevin O, Elk Grove, CA on Thursday, September 29, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This projector is the best value around. Picture quality is excellent on 120" screen. 100% dark room is a must for good blacks, but that's to be expected. I am looking forward to the next generation that has a faster refresh rate.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Incredible; based on what I've read, you can't do better for the price. The quality is
outstanding (I've watched 23 hours on it now), even on a blank wihite wall. Colors really pop;
Life/Planet Earth are pretty breathtaking.

The thing is quite big, but not overly heavy. The lens shift makes placement very flexible and
easy.

Outstanding Projector

Written By EKaru, North Bethesda, MD on Friday, February 18, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this projector from Crutchfield a few months ago and I have to say that this is the
best 1080P for the money. I also considered the Panasonic pt-ae4000u, which was almost
double the price, but there was no discernible difference in image quality. With 1600 ANSI,
it's bright enough to watch a movie with ambient lighting in the room and it's 50,000:1
delivery exemplary blacks. It's also very quiet.. All in all I'm very satisfied and would
recommend this to anyone looking for a 1080P projector. In my opinion, paying any more
money for something else is a waste...

Quality at a bargain price

Written By John, Jasper, GA on Thursday, February 03, 2011

Bought this item based on so many positive reviews. Coupled with a quality screen, this projector rivals any LCD, LED based, LCOS, DLP or plasma tv hands down! I have it set up in my living room and while I have taken some measures to handle ambient light, this projector combined with my screen looks AMAZING during the brightest part of the day and equally AMAZING at night. At 120", my family is constantly amazed at the picture quality and impact such a sight brings. It truly is a home theater. The size is daunting and the weight is up there, but it's whisper quiet and stellar performance outweigh this projector's size. In short, I'm super happy with my purchase and highly recommend this item.
