Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-W235BT

by Zak Billmeier

Big two-line display and simple controls

It's like getting twice the Alpine for your dash — the CDE-W235BT CD receiver fills your vehicle's double-DIN (4" tall") opening, giving you an easy-to-read two-line display and easy-to-reach controls. You'll also enjoy that legendary Alpine sound quality, and a stereo that looks pretty handsome in your dash.

Stream music, talk hands-free

The CDE-W235BT lets you keep your hands on the wheel when a call comes in, and ensures you and your caller make a clear connection. Once you mount the included microphone in a good spot, you can adjust the mic's gain to best match your speaking voice. You can also tweak the phone output and ring volume ahead of time, so you won't go diving for the volume knob every time someone calls.

When a call comes in, you'll see your caller's name and phone number on the two-line display. You can answer the call by tapping the phone button on the front panel, or set up the receiver to answer all calls automatically. You can see some useful phone info on the screen, too, like a signal strength indicator and even an alert when a text message comes in.

Don't forget your iPhone

Your iPhone is the key to a seemingly never-ending supply of music. First, you can dive into all the tunes in your iTunes® library using the CDE-W235BT's controls. You can also play the audio from several popular Internet radio apps, meaning you'll never run out of music, no matter how long your journey may be.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the CDE-W235BT, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and the track name, will be displayed if playing a CD text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name,& the tag information, while playing a MP3/WMA disc or USB memory device.

If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The Alpine CDE-W235BT has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Plus (powered by Parrot): The Alpine CDE-W235BT features built-in Bluetooth technology (v3.0), powered by Parrot. Parrot is the global leader in wireless devices for mobile phones, for expanded compatibility for many Bluetooth wireless technology enabled cell phones. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

      • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
      • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: The Alpine CDE-W235BT can be paired to up to three Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time). Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine CDE-W235BT. Parrot software updates provide support for future phones.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-W235BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.

      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
      • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.

Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-W235BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-W235BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.

      • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The 80 previously dialed, received, or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory.

Call Switch: This function allows you to initiate the transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

The mail icon indicator will remain on if there is an unread message on a connected mobile phone. You must still read or create a text message from your mobile smartphone.

Audio Streaming: The Alpine CDE-W235BT can stream music from you Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. The CDE-W235BT also supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Note: Bluetooth Firmware Update v01.27.00 is required for Bluetooth control and song information display from an Apple iOS 6.0+ device.

I like to keep my vehicles OEM but the stock CD failed, as most do, and the dealer replacement price was astronomical. This unit looks, fits and works great, better than the original. It does not have Sirius like the OEM but I am not a subscriber anyway.

Installed in a 2006 Silverado Reg. cab. Happy overall. Doesn't have the legendary sound I'm use to from Alpine I remember back in the day. (been out of the game for decades) Installation was a breeze.
      Pros:
      Installation, Easy to setup.
      Cons:
This unit does not support ALL steering wheel controls. I'm only able to have one Bluetooth phone active at one time.

      Great Unit for the Money.

Written By MikeS, Austin, TX on Monday, March 18, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, keep in mind the price of this head unit. That's amazingly cheap for a double-din radio, regardless of brand and features.

But this Alpine really gives you a lot for the money. It was a dead simple install in the dash of my 2005 Ford F150 -- everything fit as advertised and it looks better than the stock head unit.

The bluetooth connectivity works perfectly with my iPhone 5. I do have a mount that puts the phone right next to the head unit which may help. The USB port is handy, too, as is the front mounted aux input.

The radio reception, which I use during my daily commute, works better than my stock radio. I don't use the CD player much so there's not much I can say about it. It works, but frankly, they could just get rid of that nowadays and save a few bucks.

The display and old-school blue Alpine-style button illumination is simple but it gets the job done. The price, remember? It was obvious from the product description that this was a limitation, but frankly I don't mind it in the least. Not a big deal.

Sound quality is great with my stock speakers. Again, much better than stock. I'll be adding an external amp and speakers soon, but I'm very happy as it is.
      Pros:
Great value, great sound, easy operation and installation. Looks like a factory installation in my F150.
      Cons:
      None.

Good receiver, but display very basic

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This double DIN receiver looks and sounds great -- at least in my 2005 Hyundai Tucson -- and the install using the supplied harness was very easy. Once I finally removed the dash cover and disconnected the multiple plugs, and tons of screws, etc., (needed to be a contortionist to get to some of the plugs disconnected), the installation took 5 minutes -- took about an hour to get the old stereo out. Once connected, the "old school" display (scrolling dots), and the difficulty going through the menus for a connected IPOD, takes some patience. Good stereo for the price but found myself wishing I had something with a more versatile display.
      Pros:
Price of the unit, ease of installation for my Tucson, Bluetooth works great with my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone.
      Cons:
Old school display, inability to change display colors, difficulty scrolling through the IPOD menus.

The easiest-to-use Bluetooth phone and steaming audio interfaces ever. Tuner, CD, and iPod use was straight-forward. Installation was also very simple, not a lot of plugs like many other double din units, just one plug!
      Pros:
      Simple interface, simple installation.
      Cons:
      None to speak of.

I found the installation very straightforward, no problems in my 2010 Corolla. I liked the look, the sound and the features were perfect for me. I like the single blue display color, multiple colored display do nothing for me and has no effect on the performance of the radio, CD player, or bluetooth operation.
      Pros:
Has all the functions I need, sounds great to me with the factory speakers, everything works well and has a logical layout.
      Cons:

Great Product at a good price

Written By Stephen B., Macon, Ga on Monday, February 18, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Ext. Cab - 6 speaker - No Onstar - No Steering Controls - No Bose - The product produces a very good sound at a decent price point. I wish I could change the display color. but I knew when buying this one that I couldn't. The dimmer also could stand to dim a bit more but really isn't too big of an issue. So far I have had no problems connecting to my phone (Motorola Atrix HD - Android 4.1.1) with bluetooth although I don't use it much. I use the iPod over USB to connect to my old 30g iPod video for all of my music and it works great although navigating the menus does take a little bit of practice. Installation - The mounting kit Crutchfield sent along with the unit has horrid instructions that are absolutely useless. For this truck you need to remove the Alpine sleeve and faceplate (they are one piece) from the radio then you can put the mounting kit on the unit and figure out which tabs to break off by comparing against the stock radio. Had to call Crutchfield Tech support for help with that part, but the CSR knew exactly what he was talking about and the rest of the install was easy. Even though it says modified fit, it went in my truck perfectly without removing the support bar and even left room to ziptie mount the warning chime module to the support bar. It fits in my dash very nicely and looks better than the stock radio did.
      Pros:
Price - Sound Quality - Input Options - Did not need to remove the support bar in my '04 Silverado
      Cons:
Crappy instructions with the mounting kit - Skipping ipod tracks takes longer than skipping cd tracks on the stock radio. I can't be on track one and skip to track 3 by pressing the next button 2 times fast. It must register as starting 2 before the next skip can be used. This isn't a big issue though

      Disappointed

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After speaking with a Crutchfield adviser, I purchased the Alpine CDE-W235BT. I've also got 4 Infinity Kappa 682.9cf hooked up with this unit. I was very specific about what I was looking for in sound quality. I made it clear that I play my Classic Rock at a high level and wanted crisp, clear sound. Unfortunately, this Alpine does not deliver that. Don't get me wrong, this unit played at around mid level, sounds pretty good. But crank it up, and there's plenty of distortion. Not the sharp quality I'm looking for. Also, once I get it sounding pretty good at mid level, when I turn down the volume I lose the bass and have to crank the bass level up. Then when raising the volume, I have to turn the bass down or I get distortion.

This unit sounds much better than the stock unit in my 2006 F-150 but, my girlfriends' stock unit in her Dodge Charger sounds just as good if not better than my Alpine. I'm definitely NOT satisfied with this purchase.
      Pros:
Looks good and fits well in the dash. But, that's not why I buy a quality stereo. I don't care if it's hidden out of view, it just has to sound good.
      Cons:
      Distortion

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off I put this into a 2010 Dodge Ram. The pac radio adapter worked great. Since the radio was a double din Crutchfield said the subdash would have to be modified, well they weren't wrong. That's the first time I used a grinder inside my vehicle. It looks good installed, thieves good luck getting it out. Connecting my Nokia 920 Windows phone everything works good so far except I cannot change songs on the radio thru the BT. Maybe a update will fix that? Initial impressions are very good!
      Pros:
      Love the radio.
      Cons:
I cannot change songs thru bluetooth control. Fits tight in a late model Ram!

      Undecided

Written By RKFord, Reno, NV on Friday, February 15, 2013

I have very little knowledge and/or experience with car stereos. I just wanted something with reasonably good sound to make hands free cell phone use possible in my 2003 Odyssey. I was assured by the folks at Crutchfield that my Droid should pair up via bluetooth with this Alpine with no problem. Well, apparently they aren't aware that the Razr Maxx (which I told them I had) is THE phone that won't maintain pairing with the Alpine. So it's still a real pain to try to have hands free calling and I'm debating whether to send the unit back unless they (Alpine, Crutchfield or Motorola who all blame the problem on each other) can offer a solution to make it work. I'm SO disappointed.
      Pros:
It only cost $ to have it installed.
      Cons:
Reception not as good as factory radio. Won't stay paired with Droid. Bright blue lights. Have to button through all audio sources to get to the one you want.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased to replace a stolen pioneer avic x-710bt nav unit with BT in my 350z. I pretty much knew after seeing the cheap quality microphone that this unit wasn't a good choice. The mic looks terrible and with the over-sized mounting clip makes it even more of an eye sore. When i bought this the description stated that the button colors can be changed, not the case, only the european model. Not pre-ordering anything ever again. And shame on you Crutchfield for overlooking that. The blue tooth is very temperamental, doesn't even connect automatically, i have to turn everything off and back on, reconnect etc. just annoying so i don't use it. Even with the iPod cable attached the same problems occur sometimes. The unit pauses and wont play, sometimes you get very low distorted audio when connecting with front usb. Cheesy old school display and blue buttons just looks cheap and tacky on a nice car. I used to be a die hard Alpine fan, but looking back at it, i was always happier with other brands performance, i guess it was the name and following.
      Pros:
rotary volume/control knob feels nice and is responsive. Sound quality is good definitely better than most stock headunits.
      Cons:
everything else. For slightly more you can get something alot nicer.
