What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics G110-44

by Ken Nail

If you appreciate value and performance, check out Boston Acoustics G1 subwoofers — you'll be hard-pressed to find comparable performance and features in other subs in this price range.

The G110-44 10" subwoofer's hefty foam surround allows plenty of cone excursion for deep, powerful bass. The sub's design optimizes performance in small sealed or ported boxes — perfect if vehicle space is tight. Integrated sealing gaskets ensure an airtight fit when mounted in a sub box.

This sub will hold up when you drive it hard, thanks to its heat-dissipating vents. Boston's SureSet™ system incorporates replaceable fuses that protect the sub from power overloads and make impedance selection simple. Just move the provided mini ATC fuses to switch the sub's impedance from 2 ohms to 8 ohms — this kind of flexibility pays off when it's time to redesign your system.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most 2-channel car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation. Most mono amps are stable down to 2 ohms.

Highlights:

  • 10" subwoofer with two 4-ohm voice coils
  • co-polymer cone with foam surround
  • RadialVent cooling
  • SureSet impedance selection/overdrive protection
  • power range: 50-200 RMS watts
  • frequency response: 24-350 Hz
  • sensitivity: 90.77 dB
  • mounting depth: 4-11/16"
  • sealed box volume: 0.50 cu. ft.
  • ported box volume: 1.30 cu. ft.

    Features

RadialVent Cooling Technology: The Boston Acoustics G1 series subwoofers feature patented RadialVent cooling technology, which directs airflow around the 2-inch voice coil for increased power handling.

Materials: The G110-44 woofer has a co-polymer woofer cone with a raised polypropylene dustcap and a large foam surround. The wrap-around gasket gives you a good seal whether you top-mount or bottom-mount the woofer.

SureSet: The speaker terminals are equipped with two 4-amp mini ATC fuses for selecting between series or parallel voice-coil operation. When both fuses are used, the woofer is configured for parallel operation, and the woofer's impedance is 2 ohms. When one fuse is used in the center slots, the woofer is configured for series operation, and the woofer's impedance is 8 ohms. There is no need to change the position of the speaker wire in order to switch between parallel and series wiring. The fuses also provide voice coil protection under transient conditions such as accidental momentary overdrive.

Note: The fuses do not protect against voice-coil failure resulting from long term high power abuse.

Terminals: The woofer has rugged spring post terminals that accept up to 8-gauge bare wire or pin connectors.

Long Excursion: The woofer has a 1-3/4-inch peak-to-peak excursion for accurate deep bass output from a small sealed enclosure.

    Enclosure Recommendations

Sealed Enclosure: The G110-44 woofer is optimized for use in a small sealed enclosure with a 0.5 cu. ft. internal volume, and it works well with enclosures that have an internal volume as high as 0.75 cu. ft.

Ported Enclosure: The woofer can also be used in a 1.3 cu. ft. ported enclosure with a 3" diameter, 10" long port, and tuned to 36Hz.

    Boston G1 dual 4

This was on a short list of " NORMAL" mount subs that would fit in my sport track. The sound is a perfect match for my application. If you need to move your hair than get a few of them, but if you want clean sound that you can feel than just follow the directions. It works great!
    Pros:
    Unbelievable cost vs performance.
    Cons:
I don't have room for more.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a 10 year-old pair of JL 10W4's with one of these and am blown away by the performance. I always had 2-channel sub amps and 2 single voice coil subs but decided this time, due to space and electrical efficiency, to use one DVC sub and an Eclipse XA1000 mono amp. At first I was nervous that the woofer wouldn't hold up to the 320W RMS but it does awesome. I built a ported box to spec thinking the increased volume would make up for only using 1 speaker but there is definitely no lack of clarity or volume to this bad boy. The freq specs are right on as well, it plays very low compared to other subs this size. It's also very sensitive. I set the amp gain to match the 4v preamp voltage and still turn the bass way down on the head unit. This woofer, when cranked up will play clean, loud, and will make your hair vibrate. I only hope my Corolla will not fall apart.

    Sweet Sound

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two of these subs after i blew one of my Solo-Barics. They were 12" L5's and they sounded like terrible...I had plenty of power going to them wit my 1600 watt Kenwood Excelon, but they just sounded bad and finally, one of them blew...who would have thohught. I was pretty dissapointed, but excited to start with a new setup that could actually fit under the back seat in my truck instead of sitting on top. Since the subs had to be small, I picked these because they had great sensitivity unlike the Solo-Baric which makes them louder watt-per-watt. When I finally got them hooked up to my Kenwood amp they lilterall blew me away! The sound quality was GREAT, but don't let the mere 200 watt power handling fool you, these things are extremely sensitive and will get LOUD! Rivaling the performance in SPL and whooping the crap out of them in SQ. Hope this review helps.

I just installed a single 10" in my Jeep Wrangler and the results are great! Some of you may know how hard it is to find space to put a sub in a Wrangler and the depth of this one was perfect to create a stealth installation. Oh, and the sound punches you in the face with rattling lows when given some nice amp juice as well.

    Wow

Wow for only being a 10" woofer this thing sounds great in the back of my 94' eclipse. I would recommend this sub to anyone trying to save room like I do because of my wheel chair I have to load in the hatch area. As for crutchfields service it is totally phenomenal, and the prices are very competative to being better then anyone else's.

    Thanks crutchfield
