Polk Audio

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Polk Audio DXi525

by Jo Greene

Go ahead, circle the parking lot till your favorite song is over. Polk Audio's DXi Series speakers will make you want to hit "repeat" so you can hear it all over again. Polk uses a high-tech approach and ideal materials to give your tunes an exciting new edge.

Precision woofers showcase your music
The DXi525 speakers feature 5-1/4" polymer/mica composite cones that are lightweight and stiff, so they can create a big sound with minimal distortion. Polk analyzes their drivers in motion to ensure that cone movement is even and precise. Polk also uses laser imaging to craft woofer cones that are perfectly balanced to resist distortion-causing resonances.

Silk/polymer dome tweeters broadcast sweet sound
Rest assured, you'll hear every detail of your most enthralling musical moments. Each 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeter brings out the high-frequency highlights in your music, and a proprietary magnetic liquid cools each tweeter so you'll get clear sound and excellent long-term performance. From an intensely quiet acoustic pluck to the most exhilarating electric solo, it'll be a very entertaining ride.

    Features

High Efficiency Design: The Polk Audio DXi Series speakers feature a high efficiency design; meaning better sound and more volume using less power.

Dynamic Balance Driver Technology: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Klippel Optimized Components: For a driver to reproduce complex sounds accurately, the cone must move exactly the same distance and manner in both directions. The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Polk optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Composite Cones: Each Polk DXi 525 speaker features a Dynamic Balance, polymer/mica composite cone woofer. These composite cones feature tremendous stiffness-to mass ratio. Lower mass means faster transients and finer detail.

Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the speaker uses rubber surrounds.

Silk Dome Tweeters: Each Polk DXi 525 speaker features a 3/4" silk dome tweeter for clear, accurate highs. They can be angled slightly within the housing to compensate for off axis mounting. The tweeters also employ a light-weight neodymium magnet for higher efficiency.

Mounting: The Polk Audio DXi 525 speakers fit in a standard 5-1/4" opening (typically 4.3" to 4.8" cutout) with four mounting holes.

Fit well in a tight space in my 1039 Chevy Hot Rod

Written By ROliver, Dallas, TX on Monday, May 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a difficult area to fit rear speakers in the narrow package tray in my 1939 Chevy Hot Rod. These fit the bill perfectly and sound great along with the larger Polk Audio DXi650 in the front Kick Panels. All (4) speakers are efficient and can provide a lot of volumn to overcome the loud car, wind noise and loud exhaust driven ony by the Alpine 18watt RMS CD/AM/FA/iPod head unit. I am running a 200w JL Audio Amp & 10" JL Audio subwolfer in the trunk to produce the low end and it a great combinitation.
    Pros:
Directional Tweeter really makes a difference and the efficiency eliminates the need for a power amp
    Cons:
The Speaker grill make the speakers a little more difficult to install because the plastic grill frame must be screwed in with the speaker. The wire mess grill is a friction fit into the plastic frame and is subject to distortion and denting.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers, they were super easy to install, but make sure to point the tweeters at you!!!! I forgot to do this and I put my door panel back and and have yet to take it off to aim the tweeters. Sounds better than my stock speakers. They fit in my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT perfectly. I only wish I could use the speaker grills it comes with, but sadly you can't do that with most cars.
    Pros:
sound great easy to install works with stock stereo. fits well in car
    Cons:
    none so far

    Good Speakes

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good Speakers with Good sound. I didnt expect much from these speakers as far as bass and i was right, but i didnt get them for that reason. they have good Highs and mids that are very clear and precise. I can barely notice a difference compared to factories at moderate volumes but they make the difference at high volumes in my jeep cherokee. easy to install and crutchfield sent me everything i needed to complete the job. these are 5 1/4 " speakers please dont fool yourself thinking you will get bass out of these. looking back i would have gone with a slighty cheaper pioneer speaker because all they are really good for at this size is Highs and mids.
    Pros:
    Good sound and well built
    Cons:
Could have went with a cheaper speaker from another brand and got the same result.

Bought the speakers on sale for my 94 Camaro, received them very quickly and they came with a speaker adapter harness and speaker mounting brackets. Very easy to install, probably took half and hour. Speaker sound is way better than stock speakers and i plan to buy another set very soon to install in the front.

    Cost, Sound, Ease of installation

    1500 Character limit... Y U NO LIKE ME!?!?!?!?!(continued)

Written By JP, Geronimo, OK on Saturday, April 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have also done a review on the Polk DXi 460p(4"x6" 2-way plate style) and as I said there, extremely pleased with what I bought. These are going in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler(TJ) and for the most part, this Jeep is topless regardless of weather, so the Marine cert was definitely a deciding factor.

The speakers they were replacing are the same size style(5.25" 2-way) Sony Xplod, in which I stated in the other review as well, that I've never been a fan of the quality of sound coming from the line from the get go. $20 more on ANYTHING normally sounds 10x's better. Needless to say, once I installed them, a definite improvement in sound come about. However, they're still being ran off the cheap little Sony Xplod deck, which if it weren't for money at the moment, I'd have ordered an Alpine deck along with the small plug-and-play amp for all four speakers. It will happen, but not in the very near future. As I've also stated, once I get the few items missing from having this system complete(Deck, sub box(yes, I just have 2 10's sitting in my room now with nothing to put them in) amps for ALL the speakers and appropriate other little things I want to make this as complete as possible), I'll post a video if it lets me edit this and do so. If not, look for another post with the YT link. I also used the XTC baffles on these as well. Not going to cut more than a small slit to fit the wires in as once they're on an amp, they'll be cutoff so they don't have bass going to them.
    Pros:
Even over another brand's aftermarket speakers, these sound WAY better than those and I can only imagine the factory, especially for a 12y/o Jeep.
    Cons:
The guy that had the Jeep before me cut the rear(soundbar) harnesses off, which means I couldn't use the one supplied. However, he used the correct size connectors on both sides, so it was still a plug-and-play affair when it come to this.

    Perfect Match for the Price

Written By Steven, Charleston, WV on Monday, April 01, 2013
Installed in a 1997 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to change out my factory system and speakers on my 97 Jeep Wrangler. Lets face it basically driving around in a tent. Based on the advice of the rep. I went with Kenwood KMM-100u Media Receiver and the Polk Audio DXi 400's and 525. I am writing one review for all three products at once.

I did the install by myself (with a couple of call into the tech line to make sure I was not going to far off base. Word of advice get the install kit. It is a wise investment. The overall installation I spent another $30 but that due to the wiring mess I found once I took the receiver out and had to some splicing. No way Crutchfield could have seen that one coming and yippie I have new volt meter, zip ties and a bunch of butt splices.

DXI400-30+ mins The front speakers went in now problem the install kit worked perfect.

DXi525 - 1 hr + The Roll Bar speakers were a bit a trick due to having to hold the speaker, the grill frame, placing the spacers, screws all while going up and having only two hands. First one was the learning curve and the second one when in pretty quick. All said and done they looked great with the grills on.

    KMM-100 3+ hours to finish

This is just a media receiver. The uninstall of the old system (previous owner had an Alpine) was simple. Getting the new on in took a few hours as I had to make a parts run and splice everything together from scratch.

Hooked the battery backup and was good to go.
    Pros:
Recommendations really worked for the vehicle in question Easy install for one person - Tech support was great to deal with questions I had Instructions were basically spot on The sound difference is remarkable - At 70 mph on the interstate everything is clear and sounds great from music to audio books Looks good in the vehicle
    Cons:
None at this time on the speakers

    Amazing upgrade from stock speakers.

Written By Michael D, Vernon, FL on Monday, March 18, 2013
    Installed in a 2001 Ford F-150

These speakers are an amazing upgrade from the stock speakers in a 2001 Ford F-150. I can now hear certain nuances and details that were previously unheard in my OEM. If you are upgrading from stock, I can personally guarantee you won't be sorry.
    Pros:
Absolutely great midrange and highs. Exceptional.
    Cons:
Can't really call it a con, but as other users have mentioned, it is not a bass beast. Its what you can expect from a 5 1/4" speaker.

Nice and loud 5.25" Polk Audio DXi525

Written By CarlL, Lafayette, IN on Thursday, February 21, 2013
Installed in a 1994 Honda Civic
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these as replacement speakers for the OEM in my 94 Civic, front door 5.25". The OEM speakers had NO foam surround left and were terribly distorted at even low volume levels. Highs were ok, but any bass would rattle and ruin the music. The Polk Audio DXi 525 are amazing, and not just because the last speakers I had were bad. I bought them for their high sensitivity knowing that I will only be using a JVC Head Unit to power them, and they have not disappointed: very LOUD! Clea, crisp, and a nice addition to the Polk Audio DXi 650 is bought to go with them. NOTE: Crutchfield originally specified that these would not fit behind my stock door grille, but I purchased anyway expecting to have to do some cutting and was very pleased to find that there is plenty of clearance in my 94 Honda Civic sedan. Hopefully Crutchfield will change their specs because these speakers are a great fit!
    Pros:
loud, inexpensive, easy to install, clean sound
    Cons:
as much bass as can be expected from 5.25" speakers

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in my front door panels, and they were a very nice addition to my stereo system. For their size they produce great sound, an unexpected bonus was the marine rating which hopefully means they'll be more durable than some of the other options out there.
    Pros:
Solid build, good sound, marine rating
    Cons:
A template for installation would be nice for us not putting speakers in a stock location.

    Great Speakers for my Wrangler

Written By smat, Orlando, FL on Tuesday, January 08, 2013
Installed in a 2004 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these speakers to replace the stock ones in my 2004 Rubicon and they sound great. I used speaker adapters to change the front 4x6's to 5.25's also. They sound very clear and do not get distorted at higher volumes. You would need to add a subwoofer if you don't have one already if you're looking for deep bass. They pair great with my factory subwoofer ,which needs to be upgraded here soon, and my Kenwood reciever. All in all, very happy with my purchase of these Polk speakers!!!
    Pros:
Easy set up...with the crutchfield provided harness it took no time to install. Both the soundbar and front dask speakers were a breeze.

I want to say these speakers are great, however there just isnt enough Bass. if i increase the Bass i get to much distotion. Maybe i missed a step durring the install. is there something i should know about installing these into a sound bar? I just replaced the fronts with polk hoping to gais some base, ( now having all Polk speakers) and there wasn't any change. Freainds and Family notice the lo performance of these speakers and thats why i'm on here.

    A BIG upgrade!

Written By Harley, Chino Valley, AZ on Saturday, October 13, 2012
Installed in a 2000 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I previously purchased a Kenwood system as a replacement for the failing and already pitiful factory sound in my Wrangler. It was better, clearer than the original, but very tinny sounding - grated on my nerves. Just adding two of these Polk speakers in the sound bar made a HUGE difference. Some of the reviewers here say the speakers have weak base, but I found it to be MUCH better than the factory sound and the Kenwood speakers. Across the entire sound spectrum, these Polks are warmer, richer, and provide so much more nuance than what I'm used to. I'm hearing sounds that I never heard before. The same volume setting on my system gives me louder and clearer sound. I gave these speakers a five star rating for VALUE and superb sound quality. I will listen to more music now and love it!
    Pros:
Absolutely GREAT sound for a reasonable price.
    Cons:
The metal grill that protects the speaker is a pain to install. Be careful, line it up correctly and it still may bend while being installed. Very irritating!

This was installed in an old convertible - not a great environment for critical listening, so I can't comment on sound quality. But for the price, I'm happy.

It's not obvious that the tweeter is not exactly on center. If you install the speaker so that it's rotated 90 degrees, the grill has to rotate as well.
