Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Chrysler

by Tim Sprinkle

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Chrysler, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible Chrysler factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. And the interface charges your iPod while it's connected.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Control Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following control modes.

    • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 5 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
    • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
    • Dual Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (May be referred to as "Hybrid Mode" in some manuals)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Playlist Names: In order for the adapter/factory radio to recognize a playlist, it should be named CHR1... through CHR5... Text can follow the CHR name and number, such as CHR3_artistname or CHR2-jazz. For a given disc slot (1-5), if there is no playlist named CHR followed by that number, that disc slot will play the first available playlist on the iPod (the second blank slot will play the second available playlist, etc).

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-CHR there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. When using the aux input in the Playlist Mode, the Play All mode is moved to the Disc 5 slot and the CHR5... custom playlist is lost.

Playlist Mode Controls: In Playlist Mode the iPod is controlled using the CD Changer commands on the factory radio. Use the Radio's Disc Select controls to access the 5 custom mobile playlists, the Play All mode, or the auxiliary input. Track select, forward and backward, works just like on a CD. Other commands include shuffle play, scan (plays first 10 seconds of each track), Fast Track Search (skips forward or backward 10 tracks), and Fast Forward/Fast Reverse within a song (available in shuffle mode only).

Battery Charge: The PA11-CHR charges iPod battery when connected. Charging stops after 1 hour of non-use to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected.

Pause: When a non-iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

Works great in my 2006 Jeep Liberty w/ Model RBK

Written By Dave C, Boston, MA on Thursday, August 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed very easily in my 2006 Jeep Liberty with Model RBK single CD / radio. I even found a video on Youtube which showed how to remove the radio (total of 7 screws for everything). All in all, maybe 20 minutes of total time. Mounted the box internal to the dashboard using double-sided sticky tape and it seems to be holding well. Would buy again in a heartbeat.
    Pros:
    Easy to install, works great.
    Cons:
It would be nice to be able to have a random play but since it's alphabetized by song title, it's not bad.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 5th USA Spec unit I buy. Always get one for my cars because they're simple to install and use. Can't go with a better unit. The features may vary slightly mainly depending on the specific vehicle or stereo but overall you cant go wrong.
    Pros:
Simple installation. Ease of use. Integrates with steering wheel contraols without any additional adapters
    Cons:
Cable connection at unit (from Ipod) could be a little more secure to prevent it from sliding out with use over time.

2005 Dodge Ram 1500 with RB4 Factory Nav. Radio

Written By Dennis, New Jersey on Friday, May 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Failed second day. I bought it for an iPod Touch 4G interface for a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup with a RB4 factory radio with factory GPS navigation. I was told that the unit was compatible. I am not sure what the reason for the failure was, but the radio no longer recognized the unit. I think the failure might be attributed to an iPod Nano 5G that I plugged in on the second day, I wanted to see if both iPod's would work. The USA Spec (581PA11CHR) worked fine initially on the second day then failed. I bought a PAC PXDP Module with PXHCH3 Vehicle Specific (2005 Dodge Ram) Wire Harness which has worked great so far (about two weeks). The one real impressive attribute about the PAC other than it is working is the iPod interface cable from the unit is six feet long - a lot of routing flexibility. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and was unbelievably impressed by their customer service. It is refreshing to deal with such a superior company given all the "lip service" about customer service one finds on the internet. I am just sorry the product did not work for me.
    Pros:
Easy to install, worked great the first day.
    Cons:
    It failed.

Installed in a 2005 Dodge Neon
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This works perfectly, I can engender fast forward and rewind using the factory stereo. There is a little bit of initial noise when the unit begins and is powering on but it goes away and playback is not affected by it like some other reviewer said.
    Pros:
    Works flawlessly
    Cons:
Its far too expensive. It's not like it's a new aftermarket stereo or something. It's a bit of a price gouge.

    2004 Ram 1500

Written By Steven S., Florida on Tuesday, March 20, 2012
    Installed in a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was a breeze thanks to Crutchfield. Included cables are durable and are long enough to allow for installation of the adapter anywhere behind the dash. I mounted mine under the center console behind an easily removed kick panel. That way I can get to it to add an AUX input cable or adjust the DIPs. I routed the ipod cable under the carpet to the center seat area so I can control it from the driver seat. The whole install is completely hidden and sounds great with my 6th Gen nano. I love that the ipod stays charged too. The benefits far outweigh the few minor quirks. The biggest issue is that when the truck is turned on, the radio automatically goes to CD Changer mode (where the adapter used), even if I was listening to the radio when I turned the truck off. If the ipod is plugged in, it starts to play, but if it's not plugged in, it just sits there silently until I plug in my nano or select AM/FM. Additionally, on rare occasion, like once every three weeks, the unit will turn off briefly mid-song, like it is resetting itself, and then continues the song. Finally, other nit is sometimes while skipping to another song, instead of fading-out the song like the ipod normally does, the adapter will "fade-up" instead --meaning the last split second of the song gets louder before the next song plays. My nano doesn't do this on its own.
    Pros:
Easy install. Discreet, factory look. Long, durable cables. Charges ipod. Sounds great. Aux audio jacks. No More CDs!
    Cons:
    A few minor functional quirks.

Cheapest way to add Ipod function to stock system

Written By J.Blake, San Diego on Sunday, February 26, 2012
Installed in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had purchased this because for my 2001 Grand Cherokee. My Grand Cherokee already came with the Infinity Sound system and would have been costly to upgrade. This product was inexpensive way to add my Ipod to my factory system. I didn't have a cd changer but my radio had the option to add one which this adapter plugs into. Interface device was simple to install and sound quality is great. I did read an earlier review of someone who installed one in there Grand Cherokee (2nd generation like mine) and complained of a humming sound. I don't know how that person had theirs set up but I didn't hear any humming in the speakers. If you want a great way to add your Ipod without having to change your factory set up this product is your answer.
    Pros:
Easy to install and the cables to the interface device and to the ipod are more than enough.
    Cons:
Didn't have mounting screws like the picture showed on the website. I didn't need them because I found another way to secure the interface device but it would have been have them just in case.

    Works Well, With Interference

Written By Joe M, Oregon, WI on Monday, February 06, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Dodge Neon
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit works well, the installation was easy, and the box and cables look durable. On the downside, the cables seem to pick up a decent amount of interference from my iPhone 4S. When I'm not playing music, I can hear a very definite hum with the iPhone plugged in. When I unplug the iPhone, the hum goes away. I don't have that at all with my dock radio in my office, so the hum is definitely unique to the USA Spec interface.

Great product, I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to keep the stock radio and hook up/control and iPod/iPhone.
    Pros:
Ease of installation and I can scan through library on iPhone, or name up to 5 playlist that can be identified by disc number on radio.
    Cons:
Nothing I can think of really.

    99 Grand Cherokee Installation

Written By Ron L., Chesterfield, VA on Thursday, October 13, 2011
Installed in a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Upon receiving this package, I was a little concerned as it looks like some of those boxed electronics that come out of a 3rd world country. The product itself looked to be of quality construction. Instructions were simple. I have a 99 Grand Cherokee with the factory Infinity Gold system with the 10 disc changer. The most difficult part of the install was finding a path to route the iPod cable through the dash. I managed to fish a coat hanger down the left side of the radio opening and attached the cable to it from under the driver's side of the dash. Pulling it up to the radio area was a snap. Once hooked up, I noticed a very low frequency hum that increases with iPod volume. Also, the iPod will stop playing in the middle of a song. I have to hit the button on the radio as if advancing to the next song and it resumes playing. Reminds me of an 8 track player, except I have to manually advance the song. It's irritating to have these problems after spending this much.

The product worked as advertised. Easy install for my 06 Chrysler Pacifica. It's
probably the easiest install of an accessory that I have ever done and the
Crutchfield master sheet is great. My only complaint is that I when I'm using USA
Spec iPodĀ® Interface my radio doesn't display the time on the radio. It's a minor
problem but I wish it wasn't an issue.

Works well...Took less then 20min to install Plenty of wire for different
install locations. Do Not lose steering wheel button functions. With big
playlists on Ipod...doesn't make it too easy to search. wish it displayed track
names on stereo... set up playlists on ipod the way it says to in the
instructions to play selected playlists...it gets 2 or 3 right...but sometimes
chooses a playlist that i didn't want it to read. so i fixed the problem by
only having 5 playlists on my ipod at a time. Those are only a few con's...but
the pro's out weigh them. Can keep the ipod hidden...keep the stock stereo so
no thieves eyeballing... EZ install....Great sound....over all good product....

Read a lot of reviews before purchasing. Read about how hard it was to put in a
Pacifica, couldn't have been more wrong! The install was a breeze, took about 20
minutes total. The device works great. Only knock is that it will cut out occasionally,
but it happens rarely. To install, only needed a flathead to pry and a phillips to
unscrew the stereo. I got my directions from eHow. Pried off the silver trim around
the shifter, pulled the cover around/beside the shifter, took off both pieces on either
side of the stereo, unscrewed the stereo, plugged in the adaptor, reassembled
    and was done. Love it!
