Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC KD-HDR44

by Zak Billmeier

JVC's KD-HDR44 CD receiver brings the crisp, clear sound quality of HD Radio™ to your dash. Its built-in HD Radio tuner lets you tune in digital AM/FM broadcasts — you'll enjoy FM radio that sounds almost as good as a CD, while AM stations sound like traditional FM. And many HD Radio stations offer additional programming on their frequency band that you can't hear with a regular AM/FM radio tuner.

Two auxiliary inputs
JVC gives you auxiliary inputs on both the front and back of the receiver, giving you more options for playing your tunes. For example, you can hook up a more permanent source, like a Dock & Play satellite radio, to the rear input, while leaving the convenient front input for connecting your iPod® or another MP3 player. You can load up a CD with MP3 and WMA files, too — it's easy to fit several albums on a single disc.

      Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-HDR44 features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

LCD: The head unit features a 14-segment, one-line LCD with adjustable brightness and dimmer settings.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-HDR44 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-HDR44 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-HDR44 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-HDR44 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-HDR44 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-HDR44 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

      Tone Pro EQ
      Frequency Level Q
      Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
      Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
      Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KD-HDR44 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KD-HDR44 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

      • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a high-pass filter (fixed) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.
      • Low-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.

Subwoofer Level: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between 0 and 8.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

DiAS II Digital Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner that is capable of receiving digital (HD Radio) and analog AM/FM stations.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Display Information: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC KD-HDR44.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KD-HDR44 can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KD-HDR44 to search both analog and digital radio stations, only HD Radio stations, or only analog radio stations.

Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).

Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

      Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-HDR44 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps)/WMA files (8-192 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc. If the MP3/WMA disc contains a lot of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10 or +/-100) through the disc by turning the unit's control dial quickly.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-HDR44 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

      • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current rack repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function
      • Random: Folder Random (plays al tacks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

      Aux Connection

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: A front-panel & rear-panel stereo minijack are provided to allow the connection of portable audio sources. Simply connect your portable digital music player to either the unit's front or rear auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

      Bluetooth/Remote Control

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel auxiliary input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KD-HDR44 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-HDR44 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Track, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got it for my mother's Honda Accord 2007 LX. It is not an high-end stereo but definitely does more than what you pay for.
      Pros:
      - Great value - Great sound quality
      Cons:
      - The buttons are too small (Perhaps I need glasses) - HD radio doesn't sound much different from a regular FM channel - The remote only works when you point it right in front of the stereo.

      Great Stereo

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver was easy to install. Crutchfield provide all of the necessary wiring and mounts. After just a few minutes of soldering the correct wires, it was ready to go into my car. Although the front decorative covers couldn't fit due to my trim, they do provide 3 sizes for the extra compartment. Still looks good without it. I am impressed with the quality of sound that HD radio and my AUX produce from my 50-70 dollar aftermarket speakers. Crystal clear and loud as hell. I would readily recommend this to anyone who can deal with the interface which has a few hard button shortcuts to navigate more easily but can be a handful when you're driving. Sometimes I have to go through 2-4 menus to find what I want to change but that doesn't happen so often.

Summary: Looks great, sounds great, great value, a little lacking in intuitiveness of use.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the JVC KD HDR44 radio to replace the old stock factory radio for a 1995 Buick LeSabre that I inherited when my mom passed away. I am really impressed with that JVC stereo. I'm now able to play all of my favorite music when I use that old car! It was easy to install thanks to the instructions that were provided. I am impressed with the quality of the products, the customer service and the detailed instructions that made the installation simple.
      Pros:

      Good sound, clunky user interface

Written By Bob, none on Friday, May 11, 2012
      Installed in a 1991 BMW 535I
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver as a cheap replacement for a stock stereo in a '91 BMW 535i. Installation required a bit of rewiring, but that was due to the unusual setup of BMW's stock system.

The stereo sounds great, especially for a receiver at this price point. No complaints there.

As for drawbacks, the user interface is awful. Simple adjustments like fade, balance, bass, treble, etc. require you to dig down into a multilevel menu. For a car stereo, I view this as a design flaw. It just isn't possible to safely make these adjustments while driving. In my opinion, things like fade and balance should be set up so that the driver can change them without looking down. With this receiver, you have to hold the menu button, scroll through a ton of options until you find the setting you want to change, then press another button, scroll some more, press another button, scroll to change the setting, acknowledge, and finally hit back three times to get back to the main display.

All of that legwork might not be a big deal if you don't change anything once you have the receiver optimized to your liking. However, this problem becomes a huge pain when it comes to bypassing the next "con" of this receiver: the HD tuner. More on that below in the "Cons" section.
      Pros:
      - Sounds great - Inexpensive
      Cons:
      - Awful user interface - HD tuner cannot be disabled... I live in a town with very poor HD coverage. Because of the poor coverage, the radio is constantly switching between HD and analog, resulting in echoing. This wouldn't be a big deal if you could disable the HD tuner, but you can't. You can only disable HD temporarily, and when you change stations, it turns back on. You have to go through the same 10-step process I decribed above to turn HD off again - impossible to do while driving.

Had to replace an old F-150 radio, and wanted to stay inexpensive. Read the reviews on this JVC Receiver (KD-HDR44) and took a shot. $79,00!! $94.00 with the dash kit and connector. Crutchfield has it down pat with the instructions. This HD radio sounds AWESOME in my truck and I could not be happier. Brings the old speakers to a place they have never been. Follow the instructions, and wire diagrams and it's a piece of cake.
      Pros:
Sounds awesome, great looks, detaching face, HD, CD, Aux MP3 jack, what more do I need? Picks up great HD in the DC area.
      Cons:
Klugy Setup and you have to turn Demo mode off.

In my 43 years of driving, I have put ALOT of receivers in my autos but none compare to the JVC I just purchased and with the speakers I purchased from Crutchfield it sounds fantastic......
      Pros:
I like the detachable faceplate because it gives a sense of security.
      Cons:
I have just owned this for a couple of weeks now so lets see what it's like after a couple of months......

I purchased this radio to repace my factory one! I wanted something I could plug my phone into and would sound just as nice as my house stereo. I must say once this radio was plugged into the car I was blown away! Looks good, sounds great!
      Pros:
Very easy to use! Detachable face gives a sense of security!
      Cons:
Depending on the cd's you put in the radio, some of the sound quality gets distorted. When you plug your phone or mp3 player into this unit, you really have to turn the volume up on the head unit to hear whats playin1

Radio portion non operative after five months

Not Happy. After five months the radio portion has become non operative. It Dont Work. When new, this head unit worked fine. The digital radio is not impressive. The digital signal can sometimes cut in and out and swith back to analog. At this time both signals are active and this produces an echo for 10 or 20 seconds. My impression now that it is non-operative is that I purchesed a realy cheap piece of junk. Every review is from the first week of ownership, lets see what happens after a few months of use. This unit will last like a used plastic supermarket bag.
      Pros:
      Not well made
      Cons:
cheaply made, will not last very long.

      JVC KD-HDR44 CD receiver

Written By CYJAK, Los Alamos, NM on Friday, March 09, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just needed to replace 20 year old OEM cassette radio in my backup car. Decided I didn't need all kinds of bells and whistles but wanted to try HD radio but didn't need blue tooth. Was pleasantly surprised at the value and quality. The only hard part was using the JVC manual. In trying to dumb down the manual I had a lot of trouble understanding the pictorials. Maybe it was more that the manual was only 5x7 and thus the point size of text was I guess 6 pt. The face plate is shown on page 6 but pages 3 and 4 assume you know the controls and functions of the various controls.
      Pros:
Crutchfield support. I had some trouble understanding the pictorials in the manual. The tech was very helpful in getting me to understand the pictorials and how to get the radio display out of the DEMO mode.
      Cons:
JVC should add a page in the manual that describes the pictorials used in their manual. Show the symbol and describe what the pictorial means. Pages are small and thus the pictorials left me guessing what I was looking at. A flow chart might have been better to illustrate functions or menu items and how to adjust. Instead the manual to a continuous sentence describing the process. Since the control panel is already attached JVC might describe the detach/attach rather than attach/detach of panel

      A good value
      Pros:
Generally works as advertised. Certainly sounds better than the original Chrysler AM/FM/CD. Plus, it has HD radio, which makes FM, and especially AM, sound bett
      Cons:
Display in daylight is poor. I've turned it all the way up and it is still very difficult to see. The blue LED's around the muti-function knob are plenty bright enough, but the alphanumeric display is not. Pushing and holding the "DISP" button is supposed to give a one-time display of Artist/Title, but I can't get this function to work on FM-HD.

The AM and FM reception is half that of factory installed bottom of the line GMC radio. HD radio is useless without a radio station next to car, just long pauses at unit attempts to locate HD signal. Worse the audio will not fade to rear and is locked on front factory speaker and sound "ratty" Basically wasted my money
      Pros:
      inexpensive
      Cons:
Volume and mute button on same control causes unit to mute when I want to change volume Blue lighting around main controls is not adjustable causing problems driving at nite Audio quality poor compared to GM low end receiver it replaced

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as an open box unit. Other than the box being closed back up, it appeared to be brand new. Included instructions were great, and everything installed just as it should.

The headunit is fantastic. The HD part of the receiver works great and doesn't appear to have any issues "locking on" to digital stations. I didn't expect to use the remote at all, but I've found myself using it all the time. I've installed this in an F150 that requires that I lean up a bit to adjust the controls, so it makes changing stations a lot easier.
      Pros:
HD and analog reception is fantastic CD works as expected (although I'll almost never use it) AUX-IN works great. Remote is nice EQ modes are good, and can be very customized if you are patient I'm amazed that I paid so little (open box) for this head unit.
      Cons:
Included dash kit from Metra has a storage pocket on the bottom half. The top edge under the head unit bows down a bit. I wish the remote had a slightly larger angle of reception Menus and preset setting seem a bit convoluted at first

This is a very good receiver. Compare all the options this one has and nothing else comes close. I have two JVC HU's and the only thing I don't like is when you are in an area where HD signals are borderline it switches back and forth with a delay between the switch. You can lock it to analog only but it is several menus deep and not easy. I wish there was a button for this one function. Build quality is good, sound is good, price is awesome!

Haven't had it long, but really good so far. I like the preset eq's but you can still set your own levels too.
      Pros:
Great for the price- best deal I could find for HD ready and front aux input
      Cons:
Screen is kind of hard to see in the daylight, no matter what the brightness is set on

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Probably would give this 4.5 stars IMHO, but I can't on the web page. Caught a price break, and it was well worth it to replace my factory radio in my 11 year old car. I have this unit coupled with the Monsoon system in a Pontiac Sunfire, and it has made the sound a lot crisper and clearer. The bass is way amplified over the factory head unit. The volume is better than the head unit. The equalizer provides a lot of room for adjustment. The sound is a complete upgrade, even without replacing the factory speakers. The HD radio sounds great when the reception isn't funky. The CD player is great. I can't really complain about the sound. I would recommend this product if you're looking to upgrade, but not looking to bust your wallet.
      Pros:
Unit has great sound...very clear. There is room for future improvements even if I switch it to another car. Front & rear aux ports. Easy to install. Nice little remote helps when navigating preset radio channels. HD radio reception is a plus. Removable faceplate. Good price.
      Cons:
Menus can be a little tricky, so read your manual carefully before operating. The radio presets were a little tricky at first. Some smaller buttons take getting used to. Auto dimming function doesn't work with my car...unless I was improperly advised on what wire to use. Daytime glare can make the display hard to read.

I just installed this unit in my '98 Civic. The adapter & wire harness supplied by CF is perfect! Looks excellent in the dash. The sound is awsome! Never knew HD sounded so good. You really can't go wrong for the price, can't wait to get the bluetooth adapter!!!
      Pros:
Sound, design, ease of install, features. Great radio!
      Cons:
readout a little hard to see in bright sun even at full brightness setting.
