Audioengine

Our take on the Audioengine W2

by Ralph Graves

The Audioengine W2 (AW2) is the simple way to wirelessly connect your iPod to powered speakers, a home audio system, or even your car stereo. This two-piece system includes a powerful Sender that plugs into your player's dock connection. The companion Receiver connects to your system via a simple stereo minijack cable. Its USB connector can be plugged directly into a USB power source, or into the provided AC power adapter. (12-volt USB adapter not included for in-car use.)

The AW2 Sender transmits CD-quality audio signals a distance of up to 30 feet. And it can play all the music tracks on your iPod — even those with DRM restrictions. This system is a great way to share music with friends and family — control the music right on your iPod while listening through the home or car audio system of your choice.

    Features

Overview: The AW2 package includes an iPod Sender (transmitter) and a Receiver; the system is designed to deliver an audio signal wirelessly from the iPod to another component for playback. The AW2 will work with many different components, including (but not limited to) a stereo receiver, A/V receiver, or powered speakers (particularly the Audioengine A5 powered speakers, item number 772A5B or 772A5W, which have a USB port to power the AW2's Receiver).

iPod Sender: The iPod Sender is powered by the iPod's battery through the dock connector. The audio is also transferred via the dock connector, then transmitted wirelessly to the Receiver.

Receiver: The AW2 Receiver is powered through its USB plug; a USB AC power adapter is included with the system, or it can be powered by Audioengine A5 powered speakers' USB port. The audio output is a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack; no audio signal is transferred through the USB connection.

Pairing: The Sender and Receiver in this package are linked together at the factory, so no pairing is necessary. If you have other Audioengine systems, multiple Receivers can be paired with the iPod Sender, but the Sender can only transmit to one Receiver at a time.

Transmission: The AW2 transmits uncompressed PCM audio in the 2.4 GHz range using a closed protocol specifically designed for audio. The system avoids interference by constantly monitoring the entire 2.4 GHz spectrum and choosing the channel that can achieve the cleanest transmission. The system detects deteriorating conditions on the current channel and switches if needed in under 20 ms, without any interruption in the audio stream. The AW2 also employs dynamic transmit power control, meaning it transmits with only as much power as required to maintain a clear audio connection. This reduces the power required from the iPod's battery and makes AW2 more forgiving of other 2.4 GHz devices, including WLAN, Bluetooth, and other Audioengine wireless devices.

iPod Compatibility: The AW2 is designed for use with select iPod models having a Dock Connector. It is Made for iPod compliant; as listed in the table below, the iPod classic, touch, and nano (2nd generation and later) are compatible as of August 2010:

    Audioengine W2

Written By bigdrive5, Kauai, Hawaii on Wednesday, January 23, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Every day we go out on our deck for a couple hours to watch the sunset, have a glass or two of wine and listen to music. Instead of using an iPod dock on battery power, I got the W2 so we could play music through our home stereo and use the iPod as a "remote control". It started out pretty rough---my 4 year old iPod Classic would go dead after only 5 minutes of using the W2---a worn out iPod battery that could not take the extra load from the W2. With some YouTube courage, I tried to replace the iPod's battery but failed. Bought a new 160GB Classic and it has worked very well with the W2---battery only down 10% after 2 hours of use.

The receiver is about 10 feet away in the living room with the signal needing to get through the wall & windows. The W2 has very good sound quality, although I notice the volume controls on the iPod and the amplifier need to be turned up quite a bit. Also, I notice when the W2 is sitting on the edge of the table I get annoying interference if someone walks in front of it within a foot or so. Moving the W2 further away toward the center of the table, the signal is able to work around a person walking by the table, which is acceptable. It also helps to locate the receiver in a good spot.

Overall, I am very happy with the W2. It is really nice to have full control of the music while on our deck and be able to hear it through a high quality sound system instead of a dinky iPod dock.
    Pros:
Easy to set up. No apparent loss of sound quality. Great to have control of the music from the deck and hear it through the big stereo speakers on the deck and in the living room.
    Cons:
I wish the volume signal was higher so the input to the amplifier more closely matched the CD player, etc. It has some relatively minor interference problems that can be worked around.

Device performed as expected. Start-up was effortless. My poor little iPod nano could not power the transmitter for more than 90 minutes.
    Pros:
    Easy to use. Convenient.
    Cons:
Power consumption incompatitble with iPod nano battery capacity.
