Polk Audio

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Our take on the Polk Audio db1222

by Dominic Devito

Leave it to Polk Audio to come up with a no-nonsense sub box that'll fill up your vehicle with bass without emptying your wallet. The db1222 enclosure combines a pair of 12" db Series subwoofers with a rigorously engineered cabinet for chest-thumping low end from your trunk or cargo area.

Polk uses extensive laser testing to optimize the internal structure of the db Series subwoofer to deliver fluid, powerful bass. The polypropylene cone and Santoprene™ surround hold up against harsh environmental effects caused by sun, moisture, and intense temperature changes, while the beefy frame ensures these subs can stand up to a pounding.

The db1222's streamlined enclosure features advanced Power Port technology for high speaker efficiency with reduced distortion. The silver ABS front panels get a facelift over previous the previous Polk db double 12" enclosure, but the box still features the same internal bracing used in their stellar home speakers to reduce resonance. Eye-catching grilles and tough black carpet complete the package. Just add an amplifier and wiring, and you've got one heck of a system.

    Features

Overview: The Polk Audio DB1222 is a bass-reflex enclosure loaded with two 12" Polk db subwoofers.

Enclosure: The DB1222 features a vented-enclosure covered in high-grade black carpet and features an ABS front-baffle and two ABS grilles.

    • Construction: Polk uses 3/4-inch MDF with Internal bracing. The front baffle is clad in automotive grade ABS trim for rigidity and resistance to impact. A sheet of elastomeric damping material isolates the ABS trim from the baffle as it acts as a sealing gasket for the woofers. This tri-laminate sandwich construction prevents unwanted rattles and resonance, ensuring bass that's as tight as it is powerful.
    • Shape: The enclosure's back panel is angled, resulting in a greater depth at the bottom of the enclosure than at the top. The angled design allows the enclosure to fit nicely against the back of the angled rear seat in many cars. The front of the enclosure is slightly curved.
    • Bass Reflex: Polk Audio's patented Power Port venting technology reduces air turbulence at the port mouth for higher bass output with vastly lower noise and distortion compared to conventional ports.
    • Grilles: Wheel-style heavy-duty ABS grilles protect the drivers from shifting cargo. Grilles and baffle may be painted to match the vehicle's interior color.
    • Binding Posts: The spring terminal binding posts will accept bare wire up to 11 gauge, pin connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs. When using banana plugs they're inserted into the same opening as bare wire. The DB1222 s wired for a 2-ohm load at the enclosure's speaker terminals.

Dual Woofers: The DB1222 comes loaded with two 12-inch, 4-ohm Polk Audio db subwoofers wired in parallel for a 2-ohm mono load the the enclosure's speaker terminals.

    • Polypropylene Cone: The cone is made with polypropylene, which provides durability while being lightweight and rigid. The cone is supported by a vented cone/coil coupler, which stiffens the cone for greater mechanical stability and lower distortion.
    • Santoprene Surround: The Santoprene surround is resistant to extremes in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight for excellent long term reliability.
    • NOMEX Spider: The flat NOMEX Spider allows extended linear motion while providing highly reliable mechanical and thermal stability.
    • Triple-vented Kapton Voice Coil Former: Triple venting of the 4-layer Kapton Voice Coil Former, Cone/Coil Coupler and Pole Piece contribute to the high power handling and reliability of the db Series subs.

    More Bass... Less Watts

Written By Seth E., Kansas City, KS on Wednesday, October 31, 2012

I bought these about a month ago, and they were far from my fist set of 12" subs. I had a 1200 watt Infinity amp with two dual 12" infinity subs previously, and they destroyed my Durango. But I'm running my Polks on a Punch p200 amp, which peaks at like 820 watts, and these subs hit just as hard as those Infinity's with 1200 watts. and the Punch amp is'nt turned up all the way. I love the way they look, the box is solid as they come, and the sound quality is awesome. I have them in an 07 Kia optima and it shakes the block. Only subs I had that hit harder was a single 13" JL W7. And it cost $1000+ in a box. For the price, these are the way to go.
    Pros:
Frequency range, hi and low bass quality, appearance
    Cons:
    Heavy!!

    Good Cheap Subs

Written By Milky, Atlanta, GA on Sunday, June 24, 2012

Had these in my car for over a year and thought they sounded great. Then I blew one of the subs and replaced them both with Pioneer TS-W3002 subs and it was like night and day. The pioneers were musically superior in every way in the same box. For the price I paid the polks are a great value but definitely more of an SPL type sub, not for sound quality. The box is really solid, looks great, and holds up great even with the new subs in it.
    Pros:
    Price, Looks great, Solid build
    Cons:
Sound quality, low RMS power rating

    Earthquake

Purchased these a few weeks ago with one of my summer work checks. They hit super hard, they sound great, and vibrate the entire truck and anything around it. I pulled into my gfs house and her sister said to turn it down next time because i was vibrating the house. 5 stars.

    Buy Them

Written By Spencer, Orlando, FL on Friday, June 10, 2011

I bought the db1222 about 3 or 4 years ago when I was in high school, powered by a Kenwood 1700W Max MonoBlock amp, these are ridiculously loud. Without the rear window rolled down on my Toyota 4Runner it sounds like it is going to vibrate to pieces, and that is not because I haven't tried eliminating rattle sources.

Many of my friends have systems and have spent much more, but mine is still the loudest. Friends who have systems in their cars ask me to turn it down when they ride with me. Girls in the backseat say they feel like they're getting their hair blow-dried. The one time I got a ticket for an "unlawful noise making device" the officer said his car was shaking while he was several cars back at a red light.

When my parents borrowed my vehicle they were driving through the neighborhood listening to Margaritaville, they probably didn't have it past half- volume because they're old, but it was enough to get a neighbor from several blocks down to walk to my house and complain to my parents about me driving through the neighborhood blasting it.

My db1222 is the previous generation with a slightly different design and the previous gen subs. Well after several years of thumping on full volume to bass heavy songs, one of the subs finally blew. I will be replacing both of the subs with the newer subs that come in the current db1222, hopefully for several more years of ground-shaking.

    BEST SYSTEM EVER!!!

Written By Logan, Mount Sterling, KY on Saturday, July 24, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first system that I have owned but I have heard plenty of them and none of them come even close to comparing how these subs sound! If I could give it above 5 stars then I definitely would. These have so much bass that it will honestly blur your vision while your drivin if you put it on the right song, but yet at the same time the sq is so clear that its hard to believe that you could get these at such a low price. Everybody that hears them is tellin me I have to enter a competetion and that there is no doubt that these would place 1st. The bass from these was the most suprising for me though, I figured they would hit hard but once i actually heard them it seriously took my breath away, i couldnt believe how hard these hit! It rattles everything in my car including me, its done took my mirror off. I love it cause people just listen for me now instead of watching for me. There is so much more i could say but not enough room to write it, all in all it would be stupid to pass on these subs, they are amazing!.. and also i have a 1800 watt kenwood amp powering them and it couldnt sound better

Great Subs and got them for a great price.

Written By Peter, San Jose on Monday, July 05, 2010

When one of my aging 12" L7s (2001) had a coil wire break I searched high and low for a replacement and settled on upgrading to a pair of modern L5s to keep the bass fiend in me content but I didn't want to spend the money on a new pair of them.

I spotted these and given the more than kind return policy I opted to give it a try.

I prompty hooked these up to an alpine mrp m500 and I am actually shocked at how decent they sound. I need to give them some time to loosen up a bit, but they are pretty loud and for the price they are reasonably clean. My old L7s in 1.5cu' sealed had better SQ, but they didn't hit anywhere near as hard as these do, and the boxes alone cost more for the L7s.

At the retail price I don't know if I could give these as rave of a review but I LOVE THEM.

The only downside for me is the size, but I bolted a pair of handles on them so I can yank them out if I need to.

    Purchase! Install! And Enjoy!

Written By Chuck, DuBois, Pa on Wednesday, June 02, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have these subs hooked up to a 450 Kicker and they sound great! I know they are only getting about half the power they can push but they still sound great. In the first few days with my newly installed subs I had to buy a new battery and the individual letters that spell Subaru on the back started to fall out. I cannot wait till I can add a new amp that can put these beasts to the test.

    Awesome in a box

Written By Smappy, Biloxi, MS on Thursday, October 01, 2009

I have had these speakers for over 2 years now. they are hooked up to a 1600 watt amp ran through a cap, eq, and crossover. I have won best in class 2 years in a row at our annual car show. Trust me these are worth every penny! Just when I didnt think they could get better, the crossover made such a tremendous difference I couldnt believe how much bass I get out of these things.

    Dont think twice

Written By PolkFolk, Austin, TX on Monday, September 14, 2009

I have seen person after person review these subwoofers as "crazy bass" and all I can say is they were completely right. I've had these for about a year now and they are the best subwoofers I have owned hands down. Besides strong bass, the range of these speakers is unmatched(hits the highs and the lows nicely). I have them wired to a 1500 watt amp with my gain about halfway. I listen to a wide range of music (but mostly rap) and these speakers satisfy every genre. I have yet to hear a lick of distortion even at extremely loud volumes. Dont think twice. Buy this enclosure. You WILL be satisfied.

Written By Killa, Merced California on Thursday, May 21, 2009

This subs hit hard. I love them. I like everything about them. You can hear me bumping from half a mile away. No joke!! The only bad thing is I only bump it for about five minutes, and then the cops come. The only weaknees are weak neighbors. Other than that good subs.

Sound great but im on my 4th pair

Written By Sean, NY on Thursday, January 29, 2009

These subs definitely pound. I have them hooked up to a kicker ZX750.1
and they sound great. The only problem is that polk didnt make the wires
that are on the sub itself (the ones that go from the voice coil to the
connection) long enough and every pair that ive had after about 2 or 3
monthes ive had to send them back because on of those wires on one of
the subs comes off and they stop working. When the subs hit and expand
out they pull on the wires and they eventually come undone. Bottom Line:
they sound great but not worth the hassle.

These subs are amazing. i put them in my 2004 forester and they are crazy. i have them hooked up to a 750.1 kicker amp too, and they hit so hard. i turn them all the way up and i can't even hear the lyrics anymore, even with custom speakers powered by an amp. these are definately worth the money, and don't skimp on the istalation get it done right. the looks you get when driving past people with these cranked are priceless. they provide a nice rang as well, so don't be worried about not getting the highs.

    Ear shattering!

Written By Tom, Killingworth, CT on Thursday, April 24, 2008

I have these hooked up to a kicker 750.1(1000watt amp) in my tahoe. I bought these subs knowing polk was a good name brand, and didnt know what I got myself into haha. They hit hard, but mostly they have a ridiculous amount of depth to them for 12's. I get looks wherever i go, even though with the doors closed they are relatively quiet, probly cause of my ride. Buy these if your looking for a good set of 12's.
THE BEST PART is i havnt blown them with the amp dials a little below half, and believe me, I've cranked them!

I just put this in my explorer running 800rms watts to it and it bumps hard.

If I turn it all the way up it knocks all the mirrors loose, its just loud.

So yeah it hits pretty hard and can handle more rms than it says
