this really is a good product. the only thing i have trouble with is the editing of the titles, but i guess with time i'll get the hang of it. my old one is a gateway and that is VERY easy to program but the picture quality is 420. this one looks so much better

Excellent product, great price, great service

Written By George H., Kitty Hawk, NC on Monday, February 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This DVR recorder allows me to burn a DVD of programs previously recorded on my DirecTV DVR. It replaces an old Sony burner that did the same thing as well as convert VCR tapes to DVD. The process of using a DVD burner is confusing, but given my experience with the Sony I was able to get it in operation very quickly. I found the Toshiba manual to be satisfactory, unlike some reviewers. But I do recall that I had a long learning process with the old Sony; I think the issue is just the confusing process of using this piece of hardware.

My results are excellent. Finalized DVD's are playable on my two older DVD players. The picture quality, while not HD, is much better than expected.

And, the Crutchfield service, as always was excellent
Pros:
Great results, great price

None

A Quality Product

Written By Anonymous, PA on Friday, November 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We had a previous brand of DVD Recorder and it ceased to function properly. So, we went with another brand and have been very pleased with ALL aspects of this Toshiba DVD Recorder. Very user friendly. Gives a very good picture and upgrades DVD's to digital quality. We are very happy with it! Thank you Crutchfield! We have used this recorder 24/7 for the past 2 weeks and it works flawlessly.

So far, so good

Written By Dave A, Wilton, NH on Thursday, August 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, I've used the DR430KU only for watching DVDs, not for recording. So I can't comment on the unit's recording functions. The initial setup went fairly easily, except the manual neglected to mention you have to push the setup button on the remote to begin the process. The loading speed is rather slow and the disc tray is rather noisy as it opens and closes. Also, the manual isn't too clear in its explanation of which settings to choose, such as PCM vs Stream. I found myself checking the setup instructions for my old Panasonic DVD player whose manual offers much better explanations. In day-to-day use, my biggest gripe is the front panel display is way too small to be seen from my usual viewing distance of about 10 feet. The last item is just a minor annoyance: the "Welcome" screen appears and then goes away very quickly and sometimes I wonder if the unit is on.
Pros:
Good basic operation. Component and HDMI outputs.
Cons:
Small display. Poor setup instructions.

TOSHIBA DR430

Written By DAVEG, ROGUE RIVER, OREGON on Friday, August 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

EASY TO USE, USER FRIENDLY EXCEPT FOR PUTTING ON TITLES IN THE INDEX FILES. THE MACHINE I LIKE USING. ESPECIALLY THE 8 HR MODE WHICH I USE TO GET MORE ON THE DISK WHEN TRANSFERRING FROM ONE DISK TO ANOTHER. THE ONLY OTHER ONE I HAVE FOUND THAT DOES THIS IS THE PANASONIC. TOSHIBA ALSO HAS HIGH RELIABILITY RATINGS. I AM SATISFIED. DGREENE

Works great and was very easy to set up. I now am able to record items from DVR . Also records well from cable box. I wish I had this for the past 10 years. I lost many videos from DVR when it got full. Works so much better than the old VHS tapes.
Pros:
Easy to set up, especially if you look at the brief setup instructions and sleep on it till the next day.

Toshiba DR430KU DVD/CD recorder

Written By Bob, Santa Rosa, CA on Friday, February 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A poor replacement for a long-used, Samsung recorder.
Pros:
It functions. The manual is satisfactory. 1080P and HDMI work ok.
Cons:
Awkward & arduous method of naming DVD or CD ! No method of setting specific recording period, as with Samsung, resulting in having to use an extra two (2) hours at lower resolution for only a few extra minutes required for project . Erratic operation resulting in no action at times. No more Toshiba !!!

Great recorder for the price

Written By Dave C., Galesburg, IL on Saturday, February 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use this unit to archive shows from my Directv DVR and also to record a popular automotive show from PBS radio every Saturday morning. It is relatively simple to operate and it actually has a plethora of features that I really never use but would probably be appreciated by some. This is actually my second DR430 and I purchased this one because of past good experiences with Toshiba DVD recorders.
Pros:
Price and ease of operation.
Cons:
I wish it had a digital tuner so I could record TV shows using my rooftop antenna.

manuals are very important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written By TVM, Placerville, CA on Saturday, May 14, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bot the Toshiba DR430KU mainly to copy my 8 mm camcorder tapes via my 8mm vcr, to dvd's. I think it's doing the job ok, BUT. I wish it had an easier way to start titles and chapters (I still can't figure out how to start chapters where I want them to start), and I wish it came with a decent manual.

Hardware manufacturers don't seem to realize that the user manual represents their product. The product may be fine, but a lousy manual makes the user think the product is lousy. The dr430ku manual was obviously not written by people fluent in English, but that's ok. The problem is, the manual writers don't know how to explain how to use a product. It probably was written by engineers who know very well how to use the product, but don't realize they are explaining something to someone who's not familiar with the subject. (I'm a retired engineer--this was and still is a common problem..)

Easy 480 DVD Recording

Written By Peanut, Anchorage, AK on Sunday, October 31, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy because it does NOT have a tuner, so there's less to mess with. The
only inputs are either RCA jacks or S-Video, so I've recorded 480 resolution,
but nothing more defined than that. Records in 61min, 2:02, 4:04, 6:06, or
8:08. Use DVD-R discs to record in 16:9 or 4:3 - this is good for recording
shows. Use DVD+R to record in only 4:3, but you can insert chapter marks
wherever you like, so this is good for recording sports because you can start a
chapter at each half-inning or quarter of the sporting event. I'd give this
unit 5 stars if it were able to record in more than 480, but it's limited by the
inputs. I'm very glad I own this unit - it's so easy and dependable.

Too complicated to record

Written By Harry T, Wesley Chapel on Thursday, October 21, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for something simple to record and back up my videos onto DVD. I started about 2 weeks ago and haven't finished even 1 yet. I recorded a tape, or thats what I think, but I cannot play it due to some finishing requirements that need to be done in order to play it on other devices. It is frustating and my wife wants me to return it. I'm not a electronics buff.

The recorder works great. A little difficult to set up with other componets as the instructions
are a little misleading. The recorder is a little slow to respond to commands but something
you can live with.
