Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC Arsenal KD-A805

by Zak Billmeier

Hands-free calling and awesome sound

JVC includes a Bluetooth® adapter with the KD-A805 CD receiver, letting you make safer hands-free calls in your car with a compatible phone. When a call comes in, the receiver mutes the music and you'll hear the caller over your vehicle's speakers. Mount the included microphone in a convenient spot for maximum sound quality.

JVC's KDA805 CD receiver

Built-in iPod® controls

Just connect your iPod or iPhone® using the cable it came with, and you'll be using the receiver's controls to browse your tunes and playlists in no time — no adapter required. JVC's 2-Way Control lets your passengers use the iPod itself to control your music while it's connected to the radio — and you'll still see song info on the display. Be sure to check the Hands-on Research tab for iPod model compatibility when using 2-way control.

A powerful, flexible tone machine

Play your MP3 and WMA files you've burned to disc, or load them on a USB flash drive. You'll have tunes to spare for your next trip, and you'll see song info on the receiver's display. A powerful internal amplifier belts out all your tunes with authority, and you can tweak your tone to perfection with the 3-band equalizer. The premium Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter ensures that your music will be reproduced faithfully.

      Display Features

Detachable Face: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing clip is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The unit comes with a hard plastic face case to store the receiver's faceplate when detached.

Display Color: The receiver features 29 display color presets. Additionally there is a user preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in over 30,000 color options. The chosen color applies to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except Power, Eject, and EQ; those remain red. The contrast of the display can also be adjusted 1 to 8.

Clock Display: In the menu the clock can be set to display with the ignition on, even when the unit is off ("keyed" operation). With the ignition off, when you press the display button the clock is displayed for 5 seconds, then turned off.

Display Dimmer: The display dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead).

      Audio Section

MOS-FET Amplifier: The JVC KD-A805 features a MOS-FET amplifier that is CEA-2006 compliant and rated at 20 watts RMS x 4 channels in 4-ohm and 1% THD+N with a signal to noise ratio of 80 dBA.

TI/Burr-Brown 24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-A805 utilizes a TI/Burr-Brown 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

Intelligent Equalizer (i-EQ): The KD-A805 has a 3-band parametric EQ with manually adjustable center frequencies: Bass; 50Hz, 100 Hz, or 200 Hz; Midrange 500 Hz, 1 kHz, or 2.5 kHz; and Treble 5kHz, 10 kHz, or 15 kHz. The bass, midrange, and treble bandwidth settings are also adjustable: Q0.7, Q1.0, Q1.4, or Q2.0. The setting for each EQ band varies from -6 to +6 dB. In addition to these "User" settings, there are six EQ presets with the following combinations:

      Sound Modes Preset Values
      Bass Midrange Treble
Level Freq. Q Level Freq. Q Level Freq. Freq.
      User (initial) 00 50 Hz Q1.0 00 1 kHz Q1.0 00 10 kHz Q1.0
      Rock +03 100 Hz Q1.0 00 1 kHz Q1.0 +02 10 kHz Q1.4
      Classic +01 80 Hz Q1.0 00 1 kHz Q1.0 +03 10 kHz Q1.4
      Pop +02 100 Hz Q1.0 +01 1 kHz Q1.0 +02 10 kHz Q1.4
      Hip Hop +04 50 Hz Q1.0 -02 1 kHz Q1.0 +01 10 kHz Q1.4
      Jazz +03 100 Hz Q1.0 00 1 kHz Q1.0 +03 10 kHz Q1.4

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-A805 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

3 Pair of 5V Preamp Outputs: The KD-A805 is equipped with three pair of 5.0V preamp outputs (Front, Rear, Subwoofer). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Subwoofer Control: The unit's subwoofer preamp output features a variable low-pass crossover (55Hz, 85Hz, 120Hz, or Through) and level control (0 to 8).

High Pass Filter: You can select the unit's high pass filter cut-off frequency (62Hz, 95Hz, 135Hz, or Through) for the front and rear speakers so it matches the subwoofer's low-pass filter setting.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

      CD Playback

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-A805 can play MP3 (5-320 kbps)/WMA files (5-320 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. This unit can recognize a total of 20,000 files and 2,000 folders (999 files per folder). The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Playback Modes: The JVC KD-A805 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

      • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current rack repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function
      • Random: Folder Random (plays al tacks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

      AM/FM Tuner

      AM/FM Tuner With Title Assignment: The KD-A805 features a built-in AM/FM tuner.

Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides three FM bands and one AM band. Each AM/FM band can hold up to six station presets. You can store these presets manually or have the radio store them automatically.

Title Assignment: You can assign names (up to eight characters) for 24 AM/FM station frequencies.

Mono Mode: If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

      External Device Connection

USB Port: The KD-A805 features a front-panel and rear-panel USB 2.0 type-A port. The front-panel USB port is behind a sliding cover while the rear USB port is attached to the chassis by a 4' pigtail. The USB ports enable connection and control of portable USB mass-storage class devices. The USB ports are compatible with all USB mass storage class devices that support the FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32 file system. The unit will playback MP3 (32-320 kbps) and WMA audio files (5-320 kbps) stored on a USB mass storage device. This unit can recognize a total of 20,000 files and 2,000 folders (999 files per folder) for each USB port. The KD-A805 will also display ID3 Tag information (up to 128 characters for MP3/WMA).

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Direct iPod Connection: The JVC KD-A805's front-panel and rear-panel USB ports also act as iPod high-speed direct connections when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod. An additional iPod cable is available (item number 472USBCBLE, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Menu options allow iPod control from the radio's front panel or from the iPod itself (the 5th generation iPod and 1st generation iPod nano must be controlled from the head unit, not from the iPod itself). The iPod is charged whenever it is connected with the head unit turned on. The JVC KD-A805 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of Dec. 2009):

      Overall Great Value

Written By Mason, Fort Worth, TX on Thursday, January 28, 2010
      Installed in a 2001 Infiniti QX4
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros: Lots of options and features. Having the rear USB is nice so you don't have to use the front inputs if you don't want to. I have the optional HD tuner which works perfectly with the head unit. Also, having so many display colors to choose from helps to match up with the dash lights and controls.

Cons: Bluetooth quality. Almost everyone I talk to says it sounds like I'm speaking around or through water. Callers all sound great on my end, though. If I had to pay extra for the bluetooth feature I probably would have returned it by now.

Installed in a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this deck for its iPod and Bluetooth capabilities and found out it is even NICER in real life than it looks online!

The install into my 2000 Grand Am went super smoothly thanks to Crutchfield's free installation goodies and I was able to pair my phone and talk hands-free in practically no time at all. It's remarkable how much safer and more convenient it is to have fully integrated Bluetooth in my car - No need to fumble around for the phone, just press the button on the deck! It's worth the price just for that feature... The INCLUDED Bluetooth dongle saved a small fortune vs. purchasing a separate Bluetooth module and simplified install even more!

Add in a variable color scheme + myriad customization options and you can make this deck look at home in pretty much any vehicle.

Interestingly enough, I thought that the button to the left of the rotary knob was going to be one of those kind of cheezy feeling "remote control" rubber buttons with arrows that would rub off in no time but its NOT. It is actually a durable plastic button with indicators UNDERNEATH its surface that is blank when the deck is off! Minor squabble perhaps but I was glad.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good: Most bang for the buck in the receiver market. Excellent 5V preamp outs for those building a system with amplifiers. Two USB ports work simultaneously, which is very nice. Color selection is very nice. Single knob operation is user-friendly. Sounds great.

Bad: Bluetooth with phone works fine, but people complain that they cannot hear me very good. I have moved the microphone all over, but it still isn't great. You can hear others just fine, but the included microphone is junk.

Ugly: iPod connectivity is awesome. It can play and charge your iPod (I have a 1st gen touch), BUT every time you go to change artists or songs, you have to start right back at the beginning, at the root folders and start at "A". Also, when it gets to the end of an album or playlist it says "STOP" and you have to go all the way back to the main menu again - it will not go on to the next artist automatically. Needless to say it is dangerous to try and change artists, playlists, songs, etc. while driving. VERY BAD DESIGN. Hopefully JVC will get this fixed in future models.

i just installed this unit in my car last week. It sounds great. the easiest menu I've ever used. All of the illumination colors are cool too. Lots of options for listening. the included mic works great. It is the first stereo I've had that doesn't have 6 buttons along the bottom for presets, only a minor drawback. I would highly recommend.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first tried a Clarion unit that was more expensive but had poor sound and didn't fit my car correctly. I didn't buy it from Crutchfield. Big mistake on my part! Then I got smart and called the experts at Crutchfield and they recommended this unit. I setup the display color to match the BMW colors so it looks even better than the factory stereo. And the sound is superb. This is the third unit that I've purchased over the past several years from Crutchfield for my cars. I am never disappointed. Thank you Crutchfield. I love my new JVC stereo!

      Very satisfied with this unit

Written By Martin, Vancouver, WA on Monday, December 07, 2009

My wife got me this unit to replace the stock unit in my Jeep Liberty. Install was very simple using the detailed instructions included by Crutchfield - it took me longer to figure out where to route the mic cable and USB cable behind the dashboard than it did to mount the stereo.
      Two minor grumbles:
1 - when controlling and iPhone from the head unit, if you scroll quickly through artists, albums or songs, it takes a while for the text to catch up - I was looking at a list saying artist 14/125, 15/125, etc until the display catches up.
2 - it doesn't state in the single sheet included with the bevel for the Jeep Liberty that the bevel has to be oriented correctly. I put the unit in, connected everything up, then tried to re-fit the center console and found that the bevel was on upside down. Yes, I know I should have checked before fitting it, but in the semi-dark interior inside my garage, it was hard to tell that the bevel was directional.

Other than those two grumbles, I am very happy with this unit. The sound is very clear, even through the cheap stock speakers, and controlling my iPhone and iPod is very easy.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace they dying factory stereo in my 1996 BMW 328. I am completely satisfied. The sound quality with the factory speakers is excellent and better than the factory unit. The Bluetooth feature works well for both telephone and music from my iPhone 3G (which has Bluetooth audio support with the new Version 3 software.). The unit is very easy to use, much easier than the Pioneer I bought for my other car. I was able to change the display color to match the orange glow of the BMW, which is a nice touch.

Installation was flawless and simple. The Crutchfield directions were very clear and made the project go very smoothly. I had a question, which was answered over the phone by a very knowlegeable rep. I'll never buy a car audio product anywhere but Crutchfield. It's a pleasure to do business with this company.

      JVC Arsenal KD-A805

Written By Jason, Charlottesville, VA on Thursday, October 22, 2009

This unit is a big step up from my factory unit. I also added infinity speakers to make the sound even better. I absolutley love the bluetooth. Though it took a couple tries to figure out where to place the mic so I would sound clear to a caller, it works great now. I insist upon bluetooth even being in a state where it is okay to talk on your phone while driving. The only problem I have with this unit relates to the Ipod control. Instead of being able to choose songs by scrolling on my Ipod while docked to the receiver, I can only choose the songs by using the actual JVC Unit. It's a bit of a pain, but otherwise, a great unit.

      Awesome Stereo

Written By William, Wichita, KS on Saturday, September 19, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reason I am leaving this review of this JVC deck is to praise the button /
menu lay-out. I have owned two previous JVC Arsenal decks and the stereo
buttons and functions were somewhat lacking to say the least. This deck is laid
out very nicely. I was able to setup the deck with no instruction in about 10
minutes. Of course there is much more to discover in the manual, which is very
well written, but is not needed for everyday operation.

The deck sounds very nice driving two pairs of Polk speakers and makes plenty of
sound with minimal distortion. The Bluetooth synced right up with my BB Tour
and transferred the address book seamlessly. This is a very nice deck for the
      money.

I would definitely recommend the purchase of this receiver!

      Very poor Blue Tooth performance

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I would like to say that Crutchfield rocks. Exceptional support and extremely nice people to deal with.

I purchase this HU for my 08 Xterra. The install was easy enough - I am very "dedicated" when installing something in my truck. The sound is good, amp is adequate, the screen is kinda' small and makes reading anything on the screen very hard. But this is not the issue.
I have 4 phone in my household a IPhone 3Gs, Iphone 3G, Blackberry and a regular Nokia .... None of them are working right with this unit and all of them are workign perfect in my other car equiped with Parrot Bluetoot, or my other car Infiniti G35x with factory BT.
The caller in the other side can barely hear me - the quality is horrible, to much background noise even when sitting with the engine off ... 75% of the time when I want to make a phone call - it will ring thru the HU and when the other party picks up it switches to the phone vs goign to the car speakers. Try that when driving to look for the phone and accept the conversation .... Or try to get in teh car an it does not recognize the phone .... you have to remove the BT adapter and reinsert it.
So I called Crutchfield and they sent me another brand new unit. Absolutely identical. So no mistake here - I am not the only one complaining about this. Do your reading and make an educate decision.
And yeah - I am a computer engineer and an electronist ... I did install more HU's than I can remember.

      Golden middle

Written By pragmatic, Victoria, BC, Canada on Thursday, August 27, 2009

This guy carries all the features which are must for today's car media systems: BlueTooth, USB, MP3. Besides, it looks elegant and supports different colors for the illumination to match your interior. The price you pay, is in a middle between the entry models and the very expensive (but not better in quality) ones. My rate of 4 stars is due to some issues, which I list below:
      - Phone button is not illuminated (someone also mentioned that)
      - If you wear the sunglasses, you will almost see nothing on LCD, regardless the color you choose (Do not buy it if you live in Texas or drive along the Miami Beach :) )
      - No international characters (unicode) support. The tunes and folder names on your native language will be displayed as __________
      - When the unit is off (with Clock mode on), the clock is difficult to see. No idea why they can't put it in a middle of LCD and use the bigger font.
      - FM Radio, does not recognize the station names. However, it gives you an ability to enter it manually.

At first I bought a Dual stereo and had it about a week. I was not happy with that purchase. I returned it for this JVC and I was extremely pleased I did so. The JVC Arsenal works with the iphone, has bluetooth, and front and back USB inputs. The display can light up in many different colors of your choosing which is a nice touch if you want to make it match your dash lights and look like it belongs. Very happy.

      Fantastic Bang for your Buck

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I rarely take the time to review a product/retailer, but my experience purchasing from Crutchfield was so impressive that I wanted to remove any fear of buying from this online retailer that potential customers might have. Crutchfield's customer support cannot be touched. Their staff are extremely knowledgeable and every step of the transaction was handled professionally. When I received the package, it was obvious that their standards of performance trickle right down to the shipping department. The free mounting brackets and wiring harnesses worked flawlessly and the instructions could be followed by even the most novice individual. The unit itself is fantastic. Sound and display are easily customized and there are plenty of RCA's out for amps. My iPhone works perfectly with the unit in bluetooth mode while making phone calls or streaming music. The unit is feature packed and will make an excellent addition to any auto dash with its many display colors. So far, the only complaint I have (and it is small) is that the button for the phone does not illuminate. You will have a hard time finding a better bluetooth/2 USB/iPhone/iPod compatible stereo at this price. However, if this unit dosen't suit your needs, do yourself a favor and purchase the unit you choose from Crutchfield...you won't be disappointed.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second time purchasing an aftermarket stereo for any of my vehicles so I was a little anxious to get this up and running. I got the package very quickly from Crutchfield (Kudos) and began my setup. The process of hooking it all up went very well. I was a little concerned about losing my Calendar Function in the D.I.C. but not having it isn't the end of the world. The deck sounds great with the factory speakers, probably even better with aftermarket (that'll be down the road). The lack of preset buttons were not hard to get used to. Very clean look.

I just installed a Clarion DPX1851 for an Amp with my Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1 and had a little trouble tuning the system, but as always patience, patience, patience.

Very customizable for sound for the User EQ, if your into good sound quality, this deck is for you. I would DEFINITELY recommend this deck to a friend or family member (oh wait, i did... lol)

This unit is packed with features which are also very easy to navigate through. I've never owned a unit without preset buttons but now I'm thinking what a waste of space! I've installed a couple units on my own but the Crutchfield supplied kit made it obscenely simple to do and saved me about $120.00.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never been disapointed with a crutchfield purchase. They stand behind everthing they sell. I have bought pioneer head units in the past but JVC Arsenal is a product to be reckenoned with. This head unit is very affordable and is feature packed. Get over the no radio presets, it has so much to offer. IPod conects and works great. Bluetooth is easy to use, older phones won't transfer the address book, but a blackberry will. The menues are straight forward unlike the Pioneer units. The sound is clean, there are outputs for external amps and a subwoofer. The Bluetooth takes up one of the USB ports, I plugged it into the rear and left the cord behind the head unit. I plug the IPOD into the front usb. Oh you can also use a usb stick with all your music listed in folders or just on the stick and it works great too. I also have the JVC KW NX700 and love that unit as well. GO JVC!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

strange but the 5v preouts are louder than my 8v eclipse preouts. had to reduce the gain on my non subwoofer amps to bring the subwoofer bass up. unit has a bright sound like clarion units, it is a nice change from the neutral sound of eclipse. no subwoofer phase control, will have to swap out the wire polarity till i get it right, no big deal. 20Gb usb hard drive fired up quickly, using rear usb connector cable, sounded great. did not flake out when starting the engine with it connected. still trying to figure out how to stop the color change rotation and stay a single color blue. monster cable rca connectors a really tight fit onto the head unit. if i had 2 of the same type it would not fit, not enough space between rca connectors in the back. no alternator noise anymore after installing this unit. got this unit on sale for a good deal. 2 year warranty. FM reception better than eclipse i had. set fm presets and used up arrow button to scroll thru them when driving. has 18 presets. unit looked fresh from the factory. jvc mandates authorized dealers to sell only brand new sealed units from the factory. remote is weak. but i do not need it, controls and volume within easy reach on faceplate for us cars. usb drive does not work with 8Gb flash drive plugged into the front usb, but most likely due to the hard drive type requiring all the usb power. i am happy it just worked with the long rear usb cable.
