Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the JVC KS-PD100

by Tim Sprinkle

Have a JVC stereo in your car? Now you can use it to bring your whole digital music library with you on the road, thanks to the KS-PD100 iPod adapter. Just plug the adapter box into your stereo's CD changer input, connect your iPod to the system using the included cable, and you're ready to go.

The KS-PD100 works with most 2005-up JVC stereos with CD changer controls, allowing you to manage all aspects of iPod playback right from the radio's buttons. You'll be able to scroll through all your playlists, albums, artists, genres, and composers without having to fumble with the iPod's controls. You can even use your JVC remote to control play/stop and track selection. And, since song titles and other file information show up right on the display, it's easy to find the music you want.

The KS-PD100 charges your iPod's battery while it's connected, and it's compatible with most Gen 3-up iPods with the dock connection. The iPod itself is disabled while connected, so it's totally controlled by your JVC stereo. Dimensions: 3-5/8"W x 1"H x 3-3/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Features

Overview: This adapter allows an iPod portable digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by most 2003 or newer JVC receivers that have MP3-compatible CD changer controls and display the following: CD Text, MP3 folder/file names, or ID3 Tag information. All the iPod buttons will be disabled when connected to this adapter and the iPod will be controlled from the JVC receiver. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through your JVC receiver and have all the titling information appear on the JVC's display. When this interface is connected to the JVC receiver, you cannot connect a CD changer. The adapter is made for audio file playback only, so it won't pass video signals from video capable iPods.

iPod Compatibility: The JVC KS-PD500 iPod control interface is "Made for iPod" compatible and support the following iPod model features (as of Dec. 2009):

iPod/iPhone Model Generation Media Type  Control Display Charge

Note: The KS-PD100 is not compatible with the iPod touch (1st/2nd gen), iPod nano (4th gen), or iPhone (3G/3GS). This iPod interface will also not charge the iPod nano (4th gen) without the Scosche passPORT (142IFWA, sold separately). Apple firmware updates may change functionality results.

Connections: The KS-PD100 has the following connections:

  • Receiver: 59" hardwired cable that connects directly to the JVC head unit; the cable is terminated with a J-Link connector
  • iPod:  53" hardwired cable that connects directly to the iPod; the cable is terminated with a dock connector that is covered by a removable plastic cap

JVC KS-PD100

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like the JVC KS-PD100. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't
charge the i-Pod. I knew that it didn't charge after researching the product, I
think that it would have been rated higher if it were capable of charging the i-
Pod.

Great Product

Written By Ronnie, Austin TX on Saturday, February 28, 2009

Been using the product (with the KD-AHD39) for about a month with an 80 gig ipod classic. Really love it. I have nearly 1200 songs in my "completely random" playlist, which is what I listen to 98% of the time. I drive a taxicab, and usually my customer(s) always end up asking; What station are you listening to? Love the fact the ipod is out of sight, tucked away in the glove box. I'm seriously considering upgrading to the new Alpine iDA-X305. As always, the Crutchfield guys are unexcelled!

I purchased this product to plug my Nano IPod into my JVC HD headunit in my car. I could not be happier! It works flawlessly. Having the display for the IPOD on the headunit is a boone for my old eyes. Not having to use the device on the IPOD to control it is just as nice. I can`t imagine doing without it now that I have used it for a few weeks. It almost makes the cd player obsolete!

Is not compatable with iTouch or iPhones. No mention of this on the Crutchfield or JVC sales/support pages. JVC said they have tested it only with the iPod and not the other devices. Wish I had made that phone call prior to purchase. (BTW the back of an iTouch says "iPod")

Easy to use, but no podcasts.

Written By Peter, CA on Friday, September 26, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this at the same time I replaced my stock radio. Installation is simple. There are two cables coming out of the box. One plugs into the back of your JVC stereo and the other I tucked into my glove box. The cables are long enough that you could put the iPod anywhere. I hid the box behind the dashboard. It comes with a small piece of double sided tape, but I just wedged it in there.
Control is very easy from the radio. The only drawback is that you can't listen to podcasts. It sorts your music by playlist, artist, and album. Moving through multiple artists or albums takes awhile and can be distracting, so I like to set it up before I get moving. Navigation within a playlist is easy.
The box charges your iPod whenever the car is on. The only reason you would ever have to disconnect your iPod is if you wanted to sync it to put more music on it.
I have an iPod classic, a Nano, and a 3rd generation. It works fine with all of those, but I don't think it works with iPod touch or iPhone. Make sure you read the specs if that's your hardware.
Overall I'm very happy with the box. I just wish I could listen to my podcasts.

This little box provides easy installation of an IPOD and is extremely easy to install. It is not very large and is easy to tuck away. This is a no problem way to get your IPOD onto your receiver.

RE: iphone 3g and JVC KD-HDR1

Written By kas, Pennsylvania on Monday, August 18, 2008

I purchased this based on that review.

When I plug my 8gig 3G iPhone into this adapter the iphone reads something like "external adapter attached." And the headunit says "check".

And that is all that happens. Also the iphone warns that this device cannot charge the iphone and to turn on airplane mode to reduce audio interference.

iphone 3g and JVC KD-HDR1

Written By Ross, San Jose, CA on Saturday, July 26, 2008

I bought this for my 3g Iphone a little nervous from the mixed reviews on whether it will work or not... but since there were a few people that had just changed their deck settings and got it to work I gave it a shot. Im very happy that I did... took about 5 minutes of manual reading to figure out how to change the settings and now I'm cover flowing my way around town. Only plays through commands on the iphone and not the deck and does NOT charge your iphone, but hey, its a billion times better than fm transmitters! 5 stars!

JVC KS-PD100

Written By JAMES, Ashburn, VA on Wednesday, July 23, 2008

I purchased this product for use with the JVC KD-AHD39 head unit. The sound quality is superb in my Scion xA.

I agree with previous reviews that cite the difficulty of navigation between artists, albums & songs with the KS-PD100.

A preview reviewer mentioned that with the JVC KD-HDR1 head unit; one can switch over to AUX mode and then control the i-pod manually, while keeping the KS-PD100 plugged into the i-pod.

My question: can one do this with the JVC KD-AHD39 head unit? I'd like to be able to control the i-pod manually...while keeping it plugged into this unit.

I bought this to use my iPhone in the car. Works great getting the sound to the speakers. I still control the music with the phone, but don't have any issues with that since I also purchased the Pro-Fit holder. It holds the phone in a convenient position for making music changes.

Works great but with "kinks"

Written By deadbob, Phoenix, AZ on Thursday, June 12, 2008

I have had this adapter connected to my JVC KD-HDR1 for over a year now.

I bought this adapter with the sole intention of connecting my 6Gb iPod mini to the stereo and making it a permanent attachment (with the occasional sync). For the most part, this is what has happened. HOWEVER... I still control the iPod WITH THE IPOD!!! Every time I disconnect the car battery, I have to control the iPod with the deck the first time I start up the car. After that, the KD-HDR1 sees the adapter as a "AUX Input". This means that I control what plays from the iPod with the iPod instead of the deck! Believe it or not, I have actually found this to be MUCH EASIER!

Controlling the iPod through the deck is pretty slow and cumbersome. Using the iPod touch wheel is MUCH FASTER & EASIER!! I know that my adapter is malfunctioning, but honesty.. i have found it's for the bester!

Also, this adapter charges my 4Gb iPhone & my girlfriends 16Gb iPod touch, but does not play anything from them. If you have a iPod touch, don;t bother... if you have an iPhone, no need for a car charger

Exactly as advertised

Written By James, Mansfield, TX on Monday, June 02, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the ipod adapter for my JVC head unit, KD-HDR1. It does everything that I would expect and does it well. Installation was very easy. Plug it into the back of the head unit, then plug in you ipod. The information can scroll across the screen if you want. You get your choise of what information you want displayed. It keeps track of where you were when you turned the car off and starts back up in the same place. The interface between the head unit and the adapter is very intuitive. I still haven't read the directions.

Pretty good control

Written By hondaclf, Baldwin, NY on Wednesday, May 07, 2008

I have been using this unit in my car since christmas and it works very well. The only thing that could be better is if it worked better with my particular reciever which has a touchscreen. For a headunit with just a few lines of display it works perfectly. I wonder if they'll come out with an adapter for in dash dvd units like the KW-AVX800 to use with video iPods. Once in a while it goes a bit slow but for the most part it's quick, you can usually find what you want while waiting for a red light.

Best add on for your JVC

Written By Tacoma, SE MA on Monday, April 07, 2008

I have had this unit installed ( with a JVC KW-XG700) for about 8 months now and have used it with both a 4gb mini and a (full) 20gb classic with great results. On the good side, it does exactly what it's advertized to do. It consistantly charges your ipod whenever the HU is on and allows control of the ipod through the HU controls. This allows you to leave the ipod hidden and untouched (in the glove box) forever (or until you want to add to/change your library/playlists.) On the (slightly) negitive side, it isn't super fast to sort /relocate where you want to be in files listing. You have to hit the rocker button on the HU at least 4-5 times to change playlists, artists, etc. ( It doesn't reset/change as some report unless you tell it to) If you are sorting a huge list of artists/albums, it can take a minute or two / dozens of taps on the rocker. ( Time wise, it's not any worse than finding a CD in a case but not as fast as the click wheel on a Ipod either. ) Because of this, you need to give your playlist some granularity to shorten options in finding what you want. i.e instead of a "rock" playlist with 1000 tunes, it's better to seperate by ratings and or sub catagories like classic rock, 70's rock, etc with a few hundred tunes each. (You can scroll through skipping 10 tunes at a time BTW.) . Allthought I believe the "speed factor" to be a issue with the HU limitations, I'll still give it a 4 star as a "system". All in all, it's a great product and will spoil you once you take the time to build your playlists to some search friendly level.

I like alot of the feature's; like on screen display, play, pause and other
options, I don't notice a lag or delay, but I am having a problem with it
freezing or jaming my reg CD option, I can't eject a CD unless I press the
masterreset, but then I have to program all my stations. It's ok, but not
really impressed.
