Waterproof and ready for adventures

Carry along a rugged waterproof camera the next time your travels take you to the beach, pool, or ski slopes, and capture unforgettable snapshots of your vacation. These cameras can go underwater with you, and they usually stand up to other hardships, too, like extreme temperatures and accidental drops, so you can spend less time worrying about your camera and more time having fun.

Our take on the Canon PowerShot D10

by Chris Egner
CANON AUTHORIZED DEALER

Finally, a Canon camera that can keep up with your outdoor adventures. The compact PowerShot D10 is waterproof down to thirty-three feet. That's further than many waterproof cameras can go, and it means that instead of being confined to the baby pool, you can actually check out coral and anemones on the ocean floor. The D10 can also handle temperatures from 14°F to 104°F, so it's as ready for snowball fights and ski trails as it is for the beach. And it rounds out its reputation as a tough customer with major ruggedness — it's rated for drops of up to four feet. We don't suggest you go around pitching your camera at the ground, but it's nice to know that Canon is planning ahead for bumpy rides.

Canon didn't skimp on high-end features, either. You get photos with 12.1-megapixel resolution — more than enough detail for cropping your shots and making crisp prints. Canon's advanced image processor is super-speedy and great at sizing up the scene and adjusting your settings for the best possible results. Advanced face detection identifies the people in your scene, and sets focus, white balance, exposure, and flash appropriately. You even get blink detection mode, in which the D10 gives you a heads-up if your buddy's eyes were closed in your most recent shot, so you know to try again.

When it comes to accessories, you have some cool choices. Canon offers optional faceplates for switching out the look of your D10, as well as customized straps for hanging onto your camera in the middle of the action. Save your photos to optional SD cards (no memory included).

From the review Splashing with the Canon PowerShot D10
"Overall, I have to say the D10 was exactly what I'd hoped it would be — a camera that was just as responsive as most point-and-shoot models, with some pretty awesome additional capabilities that made it a must-have for my vacation."

Rugged Design: The Rugged Canon PowerShot D10 digital camera allows you to take it almost anywhere - waterproof to 33 feet (IPX8), cold resistant from 14-104°F, shockproof up to 4 feet, and dustproof (IP6X) Canon engineered this digital camera to be durable enough to go where you go and still produce great images. This unique camera is waterproof down to 33 feet so you can take it scuba diving, snorkeling or surfing. It is also freeze-proof and can withstand extremes of temperature from 14-104°F so it is also ideal for snowboarding, mountaineering and more. Plus, the D10 is shockproof up to a 4.0 feet drop and is dustproof.

Note: The camera cannot be used in hot springs or other mineralized waters.

PureColor LCD II Monitor: The Canon PowerShot D10 has a 2.5" TFT color LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 dots with approximately 100% picture coverage. This extra-durable, high-resolution screen with tough scratch-resistant coating on the anti-reflective, PureColor LCD II screen offers a crisp, bright, clear picture to make shooting  playback and using the camera's menu functions convenient even at an angle. The LCD display's brightness can be manually adjusted.

Note: This camera does not feature a separate viewfinder.

12.1 Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.3" CCD image sensor with approximately 12.7-million total pixels and 12.1-million effective pixels giving your shots added depth and detail.

DIGIC 4 Image Processor: The PowerShot D10 features the DIGIC 4 Image Processor. The DIGIC 4 chip gives you superior image quality, faster image writing to the SD card, more efficiency to extend battery life, and higher definition for the LCD monitor.

iSAPS Technology: The iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology uses an internal database of thousands of photographs to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Intelligent Contrast Correction: DIGIC 4 also makes possible the i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition. The PowerShot D10 can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.

Protecting Images: The protect feature allows you to protect important images from accidental erasure. You can protect images by the image itself, by a specific date, a category or folder, or select All Images.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is a new standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

DPOF Print Settings: On your memory card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once, on optional Canon direct print function compliant printers, or at participating photo labs. You can use the camera to specify settings for images before transferring them to a computer. The settings used on the camera comply with the Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) standards. A maximum of 998 images can be selected per memory card, and are transferred in order from oldest to newest by shooting date.

Exif Print (Exif 2.2): The Canon PowerShot D10 conforms to Exif Print, a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with Exif Print are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

    Battery Information

Power Requirements: The Canon PowerShot D10 powered by the supplied NB-6L rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery pack (3.7V/1000mAh). The battery pack can be charged in the supplied CB-2LY battery charger. Charging time is approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes. For long periods of continuous use, or when connected to a computer, it is recommended that the camera be connected to the optional AC adapter kit (ACK-DC40). Crutchfield Service & Cannon D10

Written By Marlin, Lincoln, Kansas on Wednesday, May 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This review is primarily for the outstanding customer service you get when purchasing any product from Crutchfield. The employees are some of the best in the business and their knowledge of the products they offer is second to none. I have only taken about 3 test pictures with the camera, and they were great from what I can tell. The camera has alot of settings and I have not attempted to try any yet, so the initial setting from just pressing the button is all I have tried thus far. I am sure the camera will do just as I was told from the salesman, and if ever there is a problem, Crutchfield has always been a top notch business to deal with both at the time of sale and after the sale as well. If you are in the market for any products that they offer, give them a call and speak to any of them, and they can offer alot of reliable expert advice if you are willing to listen to their opinions.

    Lens Error... Again!

Written By Ivan, Carolina, PR on Friday, October 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this camera the first time because of the quality of Canon cameras. Not this one. After a couple months of use, I got the message "Lens error, restart camera". Because the camera was still on warranty, I returned it to Canon and they send me a new one. Now after less than two years of use, I get the same error on the second camera. This time is not on warranty so it is going to the trash can. Get the Panasonic Lumix TS3 or the Nikon AW100 instead.

    WONDERFUL!

Written By Brian, hoopeston Illinois on Friday, January 08, 2010

WOW! this is exactly what i was looking for. i purchased this last summer (2009) for our summer vacation to litchfield beach in south carolina. i used it every single day at the beach, in the ocean, on walks. used the video feature as well. absolutely love the quality of the pictures and the video. As always Canon quality shines through. We also have a Canon Rebel DSLR that i used far away from the beach. This camera was great because I didn't have to worry about the sand getting into it, the water spray that isnt noticeable until you get inside and its all over the camera. We love the pictures in teh pool. This is a camera that I can let my 9 year old twins take into the pool or outside in the snow and know that they can have fun taking good quality pictures without ruining the camera. Recently used it during a snowstorm outside...wonderful pictures. I can't say anything negative about this at all. Have dropped it a few times and nothing, picked it right back up and started using it again. So easy to clean as well. Will plan on using it over and over. Going back to the beach this year and that is #1 on my list to pack. Taking it hiking with us in the mountains in the fall and have no fear of hurting it. there is no concern for me as far as it not having a lense cap. is very very durable.

    Very Nice Camera

Written By Anonymous, Inland Empire, Ca. on Tuesday, September 29, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I bought this camera and took it on vacation. Went hiking around Red
Rock in Las Vegas as well as did a little underwater test in the pool/spa...

The camera worked extremely well taking awesome pictures. The camera is
    pretty easy to use.

The only thing I found to be a little difficult was having a good grip when
using the camera. Probably just takes a little time to get use to...i'm
thinking of adding some rubber stickers for a better grip.

Other than that, a great camera I would definitely recommend for its ease
of use, functionality, great pictures, decent movie (HD would be nice but
what can you say for the price).....
