Onkyo

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than a boombox or iPod® speaker. On the other hand, you want something that's far less complex than a surround sound system. Then you'll find your sweet spot in a classic stereo receiver. Or maybe one from the new breed that includes Internet radio or other network music options. Add two speakers (and another music source, if you like), and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. It might even be all you really need for TV sound.

Our take on the Onkyo TX-8555

by Dave Bar

For great stereo sound at a remarkably down-to-earth price, check out this versatile receiver from Onkyo. The TX-8555 boasts 100 watts per channel of clean, high-current power to deliver a powerful sonic punch that's sure to satisfy. You can also get your iPod® into the mix using an optional dock, or add XM and SIRIUS Satellite Radio to your listening choices.

Rock-solid Onkyo construction
The '8555 owes its impressive sound quality to Onkyo's renowned low-impedance amplifier design. Its oversized, shielded transformer provides maximum power capacity and stability with minimum hum. An efficient heavy-duty extruded aluminum heat sink ensures cooler operation and longer life from your receiver. Plus the rigid, reinforced chassis and aluminum front panel fight performance-robbing vibration. These details all add up to breathtaking performance, and the ability to drive virtually any speaker system with ease.

Satellite radio ready and iPod® compatible
If you're a fan of XM Radio, you'll appreciate how easily you can add it to the '8555. Simply plug in an optional XM tuner kit and activate your XM subscription to tune in your favorite XM radio channels. Or, you can listen to SIRIUS Radio by adding a SiriusConnect™ home tuner kit. Plus, Onkyo's optional control dock lets you enjoy the music stored on your iPod® through your stereo system.

Hook-up flexibility and convenience
The '8555 provides plenty of inputs for your audio/video gear. Connect up to three audio source components (including a turntable), and up to four audio/video components (VCR, DVD, etc.). The TX-8555 even offers video switching for added convenience. Two-room/two-source capability means you can enjoy one audio or video source in your main room while a housemate listens to another source in a different room. (You'll need amplifiers or powered speakers for the second room.) Two sets of main speaker outputs let you connect an additional pair of speakers.

    Video Features
    Remote Control
    Optional Add-on Devices

    Audio Features

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

Speaker Outputs: There are binding post connectors for the A and B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs; they will accept bare wire, pin connectors, single banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Headphone Output: This receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel. The A and B speaker outputs are not automatically muted when you plug in headphones; they must be turned off using the buttons above the headphone jack.

Zone 2: The TX-8555 has line level (stereo RCA) outputs for a second zone. The zone 2 source is independent of the main zone and the level can be fixed or variable.

Pure Audio: In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off and the tone controls are bypassed, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity reproduction.

Direct: In this mode, audio from the input source is output directly, bypassing the tone controls.

IntelliVolume: The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value for each source, to prevent large jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature eliminates the inconvenience of manually readjusting the volume control each time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a strong signal and vice versa.

Volume Setup: The receiver volume can be configured in the following ways:

    • Maximum Volume: prevent the volume from being turned too high by setting a maximum levels; independently set maximum volumes in the main zone and zone 2
    • Power On Volume: specify the turned-on volume; choose any volume level or Last (the same level that was used when the receiver was turned off); independently set maximum volumes in the main zone and zone 2
    • Mute Level: choose the level when you press the mute button; total mute, -50 dB, -40 dB, -30 dB, -20 dB, or -10 dB

Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10-minute increments.

Tuner Presets: Up to 40 radio presets can be programmed, AM or FM; each can be assigned a customized name, up to 8 alphanumeric characters.

    Video Features

Video: Although not a surround sound receiver, the TX-8555 does have four composite video inputs and an output; so it can be used in a basic A/V system.

Display Dimmer: The display can be adjusted to one of three brightness levels.

    Remote Control

Remote Control: The remote controls this unit and compatible Onkyo cassette players, CD players, DVD players, and iPods (via the optional iPod Dock).

IR Input/Output: A commercially available IR receiver can be connected to the IR In jack, allowing you to control the receiver while you're in another room, or when the receiver is out of sight. An optional IR emitter can be connected to the IR Out jack to pass IR commands to other components.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to compatible Onkyo components and control them with the included remote.

    Optional Add-on Devices

iPod Compatible: The DS-A4 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (580DSA4, sold separately) provides an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo TX-8555. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod.

Satellite Ready: The Onkyo TX-8555 features proprietary ports on the rear panel for XM and Sirius Satellite Radio connection. In addition to the following necessary optional satellite tuners (sold separately), you will need a subscription to XM and/or Sirius Satellite radio.

    • XM Satellite Radio Ready: The receiver can be connected to the optional XM Home Tuner and Antenna (220XHD2H1, sold separately), allowing you to receive XM Satellite Radio through the TX-8555. You can search XM radio stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning. You can also choose to display the following XM information on the receiver's display - Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.
    • Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: The TX-8555 can also be connected to the optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (607SCH1 or 220SCH2P, sold separately), which allows you to receive Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver. You can search Sirius radio stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning. You can also choose to display the following Sirius information on the receiver's display - Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.

    Onkyo TX-8555

Written By Anon, N.W., PA on Saturday, October 22, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For someone wanting to just replace an existing 2 speaker stereo tuner/receiver; this unit works well. No hiss, no background noise, just music coming from the speakers. That's all I wanted and this unit is great for 2 channel audio. I also liked the sound level pre-set when powered on, if I had been listening at a high volume level, when I next turn it on I don't get blown out of the room. I'm more than satisfied with this open-box receiver and Crutchfield packing and shipping was first rate.
    Pros:
    Works as advertised. Easy setup.
    Cons:
No midrange control knob (my prior 2 receivers had bass, midrange and treble controls). No mute button on the receiver (there is a mute button on the remote). Otherwise a 5 star receiver.

Onkyo, is a great product, I have a 50 watt amp that i brought back in 1978, and it still kicking strong. I purchased the tx8555 because of the features it has like the zone 2, and the 100 watts which is asume. I am a true ide hard fan of this product. Now i have my amp hooked up to this receiver (tx8555) in one room, and the tx 855 is in another.

    Great so Far

Written By Imhotep, Chicago on Wednesday, September 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TX-8555 replaced an older Onkyo receiver with some problems--the B speakers no longer worked on the front porch and I was getting an annoying hum from my JBL 4410s in the living room. So, in addition to getting more watts per channel I solved my noise and speaker problems, too! The phono in was important to me, as well.

I am only giving the receiver 4 stars because I have only been using it for a couple of weeks--but I like what I've heard and seen, so far.

Great Product at a Great value

This is a solid product at a great price. I did not need or want a home theater receiver but a good ole stereo receiver. This unit delivers! A/B speakers and 2 Zone capability. I hooked up my Sirius radio and CD player as well. If needed, I could also add tape, DVD, phone, game unit, etc...100 Watts, sounds great, even with less than great speakers.

    Best Bang for the Buck

Written By Keith, Cumming,Ga. on Tuesday, September 06, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I am very pleased with the performance and sound of the unit. This is the best my Klipsh Forte' 2's have sounded in years. I originally was using Carver separates but when the amp died for the 2nd time I decided to go with a nice Yamaha Home Theatre reciever. It sounded great in that application but was really lacking driving the Klipsh in stereo mode. After deciding to go back with a stereo setup again and use the Yamaha with some bookshelf speakers; I talked to some friends with Onkyo gear and decided on this unit over the Marantz. My speakers are back to sounding as good as they did with my old Carver 225 watt per channel amp ...maybe better. Very smooth and neutral sound with no more tiring fatigue and brightness of the Yamaha. Definately no regrets whatsoever.

    Satisfied

Written By Dave S, Gainesville FL on Tuesday, August 09, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought it as an open box, for a huge discount. Couldn't beat the price & the quality. 100 watts isn't really enough for me, but wasn't in the mood to spend more. It will do for now. I bought a 500 watt Sony surround receiver from Best Buy for dirt. The bells & whistles croaked in that within 3 yrs. Didn't need the Sony to be surround but couldn't beat the price. I have (2) other Onkyo Receivers & a surround that have given me trouble free operation since the mid 90's. A good product. I play music to the (ear splatting loading hammer) ! I recommend it! Long live rock-n-roll !! Dave

    Onkyo TX 8555

Written By Chuck, Ga. on Thursday, June 16, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This review is based on the second one I received, as the first one was dead on arrival. I was hesitant about getting a second one and almost chose a Yamaha instead. This one powered up and works superbly so far. Two channel stereo is all that interest me, and this receiver has most of features that I want without being loaded down with clutter and useless features that I couldn't care less for. I don't care for the layout of, or the speaker wire connections, but they work fine. The unit while missing a loudness/bass boost feature for low volume bass enhancement produces excellent overall sound without one. I like the intelligent volume control settings. This feature allows you to adjust the pre amps gain for each individual source. It's my favorite feature of this unit so far. I have it driving a pair in Infinity 362's in a rather large room. I've added the Infinity PS 28 sub for a little low end enhancement, but the sound is surprisingly quite adequate without the powered sub. The remote leaves a little to be desired, but I bought this receiver for musical enjoyment, not the fancy remote. I'm still getting to know this receiver, and time will tell the rest. So far though, for the money spent, I'm pleased. I came here looking for, and expecting to purchase a Yamaha, but price still sells, and this one was on sale. This unit out performs the Sony unit it replaces by a wide margin, and was far fewer dollars than a comparably spec'ed Yamaha.

This is one of the best receivers of this type available to power speakers and CD accessories. It provides plenty of power and runs very cool. I have my Onkyo receiver connected to Polk TSi 500 speakers and a Teac CD-P650 CD player. Everything runs and sounds great. Good Luck!

Great receiver, except for satellite radio

Written By Dan In WV, Charleston, WV on Saturday, March 26, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the receiver, with the exception of the whole "satellite radio ready" deal.
The receiver wouldn't recognize my Sirius receiver, and when I called Onkyo
support, the tech kept insisting that the receiver was not satellite radio
compatible. He kept asking me how I had the Sirius receiver connected to the
reciever, and I kept saying "to the port on the back that says "Sirius'," and he
kept telling me the rig wasn't Siruius compatible. One of the more ridiculous
conversations I've ever had in my life. The Cruthfield tech was better - he at
least knew the unit was SUPPOSED to play satellite radio, but he didn't solve
my problem - he just blamed Sirius for the issue. Other than the Sirius
problem, I'm very satisfied with the unit, and I've been able to get Sirius to play
through it, just not like it's supposed to - the TX-8555's display still says "Check
SR Receiver" - but it plays. If you don't care about satellite compatability, add a
star to my review; if a primary use of this product is to play Sirius radio, deduct
    four and stay away.

The double packaging that Crutchfield uses for shipping is a nice touch.

    Onkyo always delivers!

Written By Ryan, Toms River, NJ on Wednesday, March 02, 2011

This is the second Onkyo receiver I've purchased from Crutchfield. I continue to be
impressed by their affordability and performance. The other receiver I purchased is a
more higher end unit that is used in my home theatre. The TX-8555 was purchased to
be used in a 6,000 square foot automotive shop. Six satellite speakers are powered via
a Niles SS-4 speaker selector, also purchased through Crutchfield. This unit is
powerful enough to overcome the noise that a busy automotive shop creates, while still
being incredibly clear and lacking distortion. In fact, one of my co-workers made this
comment shortly after the unit was installed: "I've heard things in these songs that I've
never heard before." That's actually saying quite a bit about this unit, because the
satellite speakers that are being powered are far from extraordinary. Keep in mind
though, like anything else, you get what you pay for. And for the money I paid for the TX-
    8555, I'm extremely satisfied.

    Onkyo TX-8555

Written By EL, Conway, AR on Tuesday, February 22, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been very pleased with the tuner sensitivity and very clean audio. Using rabit-ears
even weaker stations are received clearly. The amplifier section compares quite
favorably with my replaced separate Onkyo amplifier which used a separate tuner
    (Pioneer).

The only limitations are bass and treble controls, but no mid-range adjustment, and
either 6 or 8 ohm output impedance. It would be nice to be able to match the older 4
    ohm speakers more exactly.

Overall, I am quite happy with the unit and would recommend it.

Very nice receiver. Hooked up to 4 large speakers in seed warehouse. Van Halen
sounds good. We'll be adding an amp and more speakers in the near future.

    Onkyo TX 8555

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a real good experience with Crutchfield. This was an open box receeiver, so
price was very tempting. I would have to say this model is one of the best i've ever heard.
Radio stations come in great. The sound is so clean and crisp. I've had onkyo products
in the past and they tend to run warm, but this model is one of the coolest running
models i've ever had. It does need a subwoofer to go along with to give that perfect
sound. For a two channel reciever, you can't go wrong with this model.
