USA Spec

Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Nissan

by Zak Billmeier

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Infiniti or Nissan, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to your compatible Infiniti or Nissan factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. It'll even display song info when used with newer vehicles equipped with a satellite-ready factory stereo. And the interface charges most iPods while connected.

You'll get a handy auxiliary input for connecting other sources, such as a satellite radio or another type of MP3 player.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Features

Overview: The USA SPEC PA15-INFI interface connects a compatible iPod to select Infinity and Nissan audio systems. Its on-board software translates commands from your factory radio's CD-changer or Satellite Radio controls into commands the iPod understands. This interface enables the iPod to coexist with your factory system and provides a line-level input to your audio system for optimal sound quality. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Charging: The iPod's internal battery is charged whenever it's connected to the PA15-INFI; charging stops automatically 30 minutes after the ignition is turned off or the iPod is paused.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-INFI is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible Nissan or Infinity factory radio (as of 10/11/2012):

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Controls: There are two modes of controlling your iPod:

    • Folder Mode: access three folders (Playlist, Artist, and Album) on your iPod from your factory radio
    • Direct Mode: all the controls on the iPod are unlocked, giving you total control remotely; the radio still has basic controls; track up, track down, fast forward, and fast reverse

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

iPod Text: The Artist name and song title text can be displayed on the radio when using the Folder control mode.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA15-INFI there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected.

Vehicle Compatibility: This interface enables your iPod to co-exist with the factory navigation, CD changer, Satellite Radio receiver, and DVD system of many Infinity and Nissan vehicles; please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm compatibility.

Very dissapointed with this unit. It does not work well with the Factory Bose system and will likley have to remove and discard it. It causes a lot of problems with my satallite radio

    Nice Device - Poor Instructions

Written By BillC, Cave Creek, AZ on Monday, December 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once finally set up, it is a good addition to your sound system, especially if you have a lot of songs on your iPod.
    Pros:
Physical setup rather easy. Not having to pull the radio is great.
    Cons:
The instructions manual is convoluted and very difficult to follow. A call to USA-SPEC Tech assistance was worse. A person named Victor acted as though I was annoying him with my questions and became very defensive when he couldn't answer questions. A follow-up call to Crutchfield was fantastic. I believe it was Jason who quickly and cordially answered my questions and had me understanding the unit in no time. Kudos to Crutchfield for great service as always!

    Great Product

Installed in a 2006 Nissan Murano
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works perfectly in my 2006 Murano w/ Bose but no Satellite or Nav. Installation was straightforward. The satellite cable is easy to find in the cargo area right behind the drivers side passenger seat. I actually put the USA Spec box underneath the rear passenger seat so I could run the iPod cable under the floormats to the center console. Since I don't have a satellite module, I used one of the empty mounting holes in the cargo area and a spare screw to mount the ground wire. Programming instructions are a little confusing but work. Steering wheel controls control volume and scrolling through the presets the programming instructions set up. All the buttons on the console work to control track selection, album/artist selection, or to switch back to regular radio or CDs. I use it with a current gen Nano and it sounds great and works great! Wish I had bought this sooner.
    Pros:
Can be used with factory controls Easy installation Can switch between stereo controls or iPod controls
    Cons:
    Programming instructions not very clear

    '04 Infinity G35 coupe.

Written By StratiH, Andover, MA on Saturday, May 26, 2012
    Installed in a 2004 Infiniti G35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this interface in my wife's '04 Infinity G35 coupe to integrate an XM reciever to her factory radio. She doesn't use hers often, but it's also a plus that you get an iPod interface with the same device. Installation was pretty simple. Note that the hook-up is IN THE TRUNK to the left of the spare tire, as described in USA spec's instructions, which allows you to NOT tear apart your dash-board to hook-up at the rear of the stereo. The harness with the USA spec unit doesn't even connect to the input jack of the stereo.
    Pros:
EXCELLENT clarity both for the XM reciever we integrated as well as iPod connectivity. Unit is plug-and-play with OE harness and reasonably compact to hide.
    Cons:
Only thing I can gripe about is that the user manual was slightly vague as far as how to set the 4 dip-switches on the unit which depends on what you hook up to the unit and what car it's installed in. Even that was ok when re-read.

    Love this product

Written By Roger, Hudson Valley NY on Thursday, March 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product worked great out of the box with very minimal programming other then 4 dip switches that are easily marked and described in manual.
    Pros:
My iPod works with the factory radio!!!
    Cons:
The non direct mode this product features is very confusing when pressing track up/ down it jumps around the folders of the iPod. But if you put it in direct mode then you can just use the iPod to set the songs or folders you want.

iPhone iPad interface for Nissan Murano

Written By TJ, Bettendorf, IA on Monday, February 20, 2012
Installed in a 2006 Nissan Murano
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2006 Murano w/ Bose, Nav, and XM. Took about 15 minutes to install. Had to get second device because first one allowed XM to come through in background. Had replacement in 48 hours, took 2 minutes to plug in and go. Works great and plus is charge feature. This was an install that hooked in behind rear seat. Wife's new vehicle will not charge with factory device. Had just gotten quote from high end local dealer for $225, and it would not use Nav screen feature. This is no brainier !
    Pros:
    Easy install
    Cons:
    None

Works for 2004 Nissan Maxima SL

Written By Murthy V, Vernon Hills, IL on Sunday, January 08, 2012
Installed in a 2004 Nissan Maxima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had tried iSimple gateway solution earlier and for some strange reason it only worked when the car is turned off. I ordered this unit from Crutchfield and I can confirm that this works for 2004 Nissan Maxima SL with Bose and No Navigation. I had it installed locally. The guy said that it had to installed in the trunk. Programming the presets is little tricky. I cannot get the iPod Direct mode working - in this mode one could supposedly play songs from the iPhone/iPod but the iPhone screen doesnt let me do anything. But I am ok with it - the other presets - most importantly "Album" is working. Works with iPhone 4S.
    Pros:
At last one iPhone/iPod interface that fits my car. Works with iPhone 4S.
    Cons:
1.The unit installtion instructions could be better 2.iPod Direct Mode doesnt work 3.If you have factory installed Sirius then you can only make it work when iPod/iPhone is connected to iPod interface.

    Great Product

Written By Alex, Dallas, TX on Thursday, November 03, 2011
    Installed in a 2007 Infiniti G35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product, could use better instructions. I installed the kit by myself on my 2007 G 35 Coupe (6 Speed manual transmission). Non-bose stereo and no satellite receiver. However, my car was pre wired for satellite radio (if a infiniti dealer runs your vin they can tell you if it is or not). For me the 16 pin connector for linking a satellite unit was located in the trunk (driver side), under the black plastic piece surrounding the spare tire. I connected the 16 pin receiver on the USA Spec cable to this connector. For my install I had issues dealing with crutch field tech, mainly because the instructions USA SPEC sent them were slightly off. Even though i was not running an aux cable, from the red and white RCA inputs, DIP switch #1 and #3 needed to be turned on (not just #3 or not just #4). I put all the interior back together and ran the cable to the compartment above the radio unit. Works like a charm!
    Pros:
-Functionality -Easy to Use -Direct mode lets you control iPod and scroll through artists, playlists, songs etc
    Cons:
    -directions

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Nissan

Written By Fireman Rick, Lakeland, FL on Friday, October 14, 2011
    Installed in a 2010 Infiniti G37
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this item for my 2010 Infiniti G37 Base Coupe without any Navigation or Premium packages. I was playing my iPod through the car's RCA inputs with no charging capabilities. After removing the carpet and plastic trunk floor panels, the factory/OEM XM receiver is located on the right-side of the trunk. I unplugged the OEM connector from the dash stereo system to the XM receiver and incorporated the USA/Spec interface and cable, circling it around the trunk area. I decided to leave my iPod in the trunk to avoid further removal of interior body components to locate it elsewhere. This unit is truly plug-n- play. Initial set-up was fairly easy and the entire process should take less than an hour.

I can't say how well this product worked 100% due to the fact I know little to nothing about car parts and that it was my boyfriend's present, but I will say this is the best company as far as service goes. They did a fabulous job of getting my order started as well as packing it so that it would not get thrown around. PS, the car is full of music, so it works great!

The USA Spec Ipod interface is an great product. I would only wish there was a steering wheel audio feature so that I could change the tunes from my steering wheel. Otherwise a superior product and is much cheaper than the factory accessory.

Perfect solution for Nissan Altima's with factory navigation

Written By Mike, New York, NY on Monday, August 22, 2011
Installed in a 2009 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As mentioned by another reviewer, the PA15-INFI is the only iPod adapter out there that works with 2007-2010 Nissan Altimas with factory navigation. The hookup is through the CD changer rather than the the radio itself making installation much easier. The cables and the PA15-INFI box can all easily fit behind the dash where you remove the CD changer. A little velcro helped hold the box in place and a few wire ties helped manage the spool of 6ft cable snug behind the dash. I had to drill a hole, about half an inch in diameter, in the center console to run the iPod cable through which was no big deal. The iPod and cable are out of sight in the center console arm rest and I control my music through my steering wheel while song info shows up on my lcd screen. The other nice thing about hooking up through the CD changer is that you don't need to do an initial programming and setup of the PA15-INFI like you do with some other vehicles - you're good to go as soon as it's plugged in. Oh, and you can still use your cd changer if you want to.

Overall, easy set up and perfect function. Crutchfield's mastersheet made removing the cd changer a breeze too.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Nissan

Written By LanceJ70, Daytona Beach, FL on Saturday, August 20, 2011
Installed in a 2009 Nissan Murano
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for a 2009 Murano SL without navi, but is equipped with XM Sat. I got the Infiniti model PA15-INFI since the USA Spec Rep said this one connects directly to the satellite module which is located between the rear seat and the spare tire in the back. This was much easier to access than the Nissan model PA15-NIS which will only connect to the radio which is much more difficult to get to.

I had it all connected and working within 20 mins. Theres a short programming you need to do to in order to program the IPOD adapter to the radio to use it properly. The only problem I had was that the button for turning the random on/off (preset #4) does not work. I tried different scenarios with the dip switches on the ipod adapter, but stuck with the recommended setting from USA Spec. Other settings did turn on/off the random, but for me its no big deal as I can live without it. For this issue I am rating this product as a 4 star, but over all it works well and has excellent sound quality coming out of the Bose speaker system. All the other presets and buttons work properly for changing folders between Albums, Artists & All Songs and also Direct Ipod control.

Hopefully at some point USA Spec will have an update to the firmware of the adapter that will correct this one issue for my vehicle, but until then I will enjoy using my Ipod in my Murano.

Great product, but the instructions were rather confusing

Written By Scott S., Dallas, TX on Monday, August 08, 2011
    Installed in a 2004 Infiniti G35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great product to purchase if you're looking to integrate your iPod or iPhone with your pre-existing car stereo system. I purchased this item to install in my Infiniti G35. The installation went smoothly, however the actual setup and calibration of the product took a bit of extra time. The instruction manual provided by USA-SPEC was rather confusing when it came to setting up the interface to accept the mp3 player. There were some errors in the manual, as well as some omissions. After calling USA-SPEC, I was provided with the correct and up-to-date information needed to finish setting up the interface.

In summation, this is a great product...once you figure it out. Initially, understanding how to operate it can be slightly confusing, but once you get the hang of it, you'll end up appreciating it more than you'll be cursing it.

    Excellent product

Written By Matt, Austin, TX on Friday, July 29, 2011
    Installed in a 2006 Infiniti M35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my Infiniti M35 to interface with my iPhone 4 and it worked exactly as advertised. Installation was completely plug and play, even for someone like me with limited technical ability. I did take it to a 3rd party to actually run the cabling to the front of the vehicle and into the center console, which I did not want to attempt myself, but I had it working on my drive to the installers location.

Sound quality is excellent - at least the equivalent of the other audio options in the vehicle - CD, DVD, Radio. If you are looking for iPod/iPhone integration in your Infiniti, this should definitely be a consideration for you.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Nissan

Written By Dave B, New England on Monday, May 09, 2011

Installed this in my sister in laws 2007 Murano with backup camera (no nav).
The instructions were somewhat confusing but eventually we figured it out. You
have to be sure to set the dip switches properly and also do the initial iPod setup
or you it won't work entirely correctly. We saw weird characters on the screen but
heard the audio initially and then realized we accidentally set the dip switches
wrong and it was in CD Changer mode not XM mode. It works well but the only
downside is there's no way to jump ahead artists or songs other than going one
by one but I guess that's the limitation you deal with when you have to work with
    a factory system.

2006 Nissan Murano with factory Premium sound system and NAV

Written By Mark W, Chicago, IL on Saturday, March 19, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great product. Extremely easy install and sounds great. I did not have
to give up any functionality (AM, FM, XM, CD, NAV) to make this work. Only iPod
(iPhone) interface I could find on the market for my 2006 Nissan Murano that
would work with the factory Bose premium sounds system.

    Works in 2010 Nissan Armada

Written By JoeB, Tallahassee, FL on Friday, February 04, 2011
Installed in a 2010 Nissan Armada
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works about as well as I expected it to in this vehicle. I have installed and used several
iPod controlling devices and radios in several vehicles, and knew that some are much
better than others. But I really wanted to keep my factory radio in this car, so I opted for
the USA SPEC after looking at several equivalent models. They all seemed about equal,
but I have been well taken care of by Crutchfield over the years, and felt better buying the
product they recommend. Installation was a little more difficult than was represented by
USA SPEC, but then, their literature did not address the 2010 and later vehicles, so I
knew it was a gamble. Ended up having my dealer put it in. The initial programming was
a bit confusing, and I had to call USA SPEC to find out how to do it. Very nice guy there
walked me al the way through the programing - was concerned I wouldn't be able to get
him off the phone! Works best in playlist mode for me. Direct control is cool - just wish it
displayed the song info in that mode. It must be very hard to make a product like this for
so many variations of radios and installation instructions! Hey - I got what I was after!

The ONLY iPod Interface I've Found for Nissan Altimas WITH Nav

Written By BuzzDog, Northwest Arkansas on Saturday, November 20, 2010
Installed in a 2008 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the only iPod interface I've found that is compatible with 2007 - 2009
Nissan Altimas equipped with factory navigation. That being said, it is a
compromise between a 100% integrated iPod interface, and simply using the
auxiliary input provided from the factory.

This product emulates a second six-disc CD changer, so pressing the CD/AUX
button switches between the actual CD changer and the iPod. When the car is
moving the screen display is limited by Nissan's "lockout" of certain displays,
but just having the ability to switch tracks and albums from the steering wheel
controls and head unit makes this product worthwhile.

Installation instructions are excellent; however, for the Altima you will NOT
have to remove the head unit, just the CD changer. This makes installation
relatively easy. It's also helpful to set the parking brake and move the
shifter into "D" during installation; doing so makes the changer much easier to
    remove.

One nitpick: The connector is rather bulky; iPhones with certain silicone covers
may not plug in fully and will disconnect at the slightest movement of the
phone. This is easily fixed by switching to another cover.
