Beacon

Our take on the Beacon Audio Phoenix

by Ralph Graves
Beacon Phoenix blue

Small enough to take anywhere.

It's small, simple, and sounds way bigger than it looks. That's the Beacon Audio Phoenix portable powered speaker system. It's about the size of a coffee mug, making it easy to slip into your backpack or handbag. Pair it wirelessly to your smartphone or other Bluetooth-enabled device, and you're ready to party. The Phoenix has two titanium-core full-range drivers that team up with a down-firing passive radiator for clear,  surprisingly full sound.

And operation is simple, too. The large touch interface on the top not only lets you adjust volume, but also sends play, pause, and skip track commands to your paired device.  The built-in rechargeable battery delivers up to eight hours of non-stop music. A provided tangle-resistant cable lets you plug in non-Bluetooth portables, such as a portable game console or CD player.

Highlights:

  • for smartphones and other portable devices with built-in Bluetooth
  • Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR for fast pairing with device
  • wireless range: 35'
  • 2 titanium-core full-range drivers with passive radiator for low tones
  • 4 watts total system power
  • minijack auxiliary input for laptops handheld game consoles, and other portable devices (minijack cable included)
  • USB input for charging (USB cable included)
  • rechargeable battery lasts up to 8 hours
  • 3-3/16"W x 3-1/16"H x 3-3/16"D
  • weight: 8 oz.
  • warranty: 1000 days
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Bluetooth Speaker: The Phoenix by Beacon features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR) technology. It supports A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) and AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile). You can wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, laptop/computer, or other device to the Phoenix Bluetooth speaker. It even allows you to control Play/Pause & Next/Previous Track functions of your Bluetooth-enabled device.

Note: The Phoenix can be paired to multiple devices, but not at the same time. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Phoenix Bluetooth speaker.

Drivers: The Phoenix Bluetooth speaker features dual titanium core full-range drivers powered by a 4W amplifier, along with a passive radiator for great sound from a small speaker.

Aux Input: The Phoenix by Beacon is fitted with a 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting an external audio source which features an audio or headphone output.

Rechargeable Battery: The Phoenix Bluetooth speaker uses a built-in rechargeable Lithium battery (850mAh) that lasts between 6-8 hours. It can be charged from a free USB (type-A) port on your computer using the included mini-USB to USB charging cable. Charging time is approximately 2-3 hours.

Wonderful portable bluetooth speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little speaker with big sound. I paired it with my iPod Touch and now when I turn the speaker on, it connects automatically and is ready to play. Charging it using USB is simple and the battery seems to last several hours. I'm considering buying another one.
Pros:
Small, great sound, auto connects using Bluetooth and looks good.

Excellent for Traveling

Written By M, Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, April 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We traveled to Europe with this, and it was great to have music in our room before going out. We streamed music from our iPad, and for the size, this little speaker sounds great.
Pros:
Size, ease of use, sound for its size
Cons:
Because it is so small, it is limited on max volume.

Beacon speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product exceeded my expectations. Great design, easy to travel with, and sound quality is best ive heard compared to other products in this price range. Also Beacon automatically connects to the last device it was using when you turn it on so there is no need to pick up my iphone. I brought this on my cruise and it was very convenient.
Pros:
Small design, powerful speaker, easy to use buttons, remembers last device so just turn Beacon on and music will start, long lasting battery, great for traveling.

Small speaker with big sound.

Written By Shayne, Louisville, KY on Monday, March 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got mine on sale so that was a bonus. Pretty decent sound. Very portable. Controls are a little finicky but it does control the device so that's nice. Overall nice for what it is.
Pros:
Small, light, loud, and seems to be well built,
Cons:
Sometimes the volume adjustment advances or starts a song over since it uses a common button.

Forget about a boombox this is all you need, portable, you can use Bluetooth or via cable and sounds good for the price
Pros:
Very portable, great sound and price. Easy setup. Can control basic functions on speaker when using bluetooth.
Cons:
I get intermittent Bluetooth reception when I move around quickly using my smartphone (within 20 feet) as the source. I can live with this.

Great speaker for the money, although not as loud and not as much base and sound quality as Bose. However for $200 less its well worth the money for the use in the golf cart and around the pool that I bought it for.
Pros:
Value and ease of use
Cons:
Loudness and lack of bass

Rare case of Form Factor trumps Sound Quality

Written By tomh, Philadelphia, PA on Monday, January 28, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Reviewers and customers all love this little speaker and so do I. It's tiny and handy and its convenience way out-weighs they slightly lacking sound quality. The bluetooth is flawless (except of course for iOS6's annoying drop-outs) and also well thought-out. Rather than having to go into iOS settings and connect to the speaker each time you want to use it, you just hold the power button down on the Beacon for about 10 seconds (kinda long, but it's still quicker than the alternative) and it auto connects to the last bluetooth transmitter it was connected to! And to be able to skip songs from the speaker itself is also surprisingly convenient -- can leave the iPad safely closed and covered out of harm's way.

The bass is what I expected... subtle, but in a quiet room, you can hear that the little passive radiator is thumpin' pretty strong. It actually sounds like it has more low-end range than physically possible. So that is acceptable. But what is a little lacking is the high end. Treble is clean and natural, but there is little crisp "high-hat range" sizzle. When I run an EQ-able app, it does create the crispness I like, but most apps in iOS don't have equalization built in. Movie channel stream apps, rdio, grooveshark... non have EQ's built in.

To really make this little box shine, an added internal digital EQ would really supe it up! If it has that feature, I'd have nothing to complain about. It's be perfect. But the sound is still very good.
Pros:
Form factor... couldn't be more convenient. Really small, really consistent and very cool looking. Bluetooth is flawless and well engineered. Sound is loud and clean. Fills a small room with sound.
Cons:
Could really use an internal EQ (two band would be plenty - or even just a treble adjustment since I figure bass is maxed out just shy of distortion). High end slightly lacking in intensity.

Packs a lot of punch in a little package! You won't believe the sound you get from such a small speaker. It's small enough to carry anywhere, the battery life is great. It's easy to use, What's not to like?

Great Little Speaker!

Written By Mel, Iowa on Thursday, January 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent product. Amazing sound for such a small speaker. No 'tinny' sound, good clarity. The bass is amazing and will actually shake the table you set it on. You can crank the volume up REALLY loud. Battery life seemed to last even longer than advertized. I would highly recommend this product! It is very reasonably priced so you get a lot for your money. Very small and portable.
Pros:
Amazing sound. Great clarity. Nice bass. Can get REALLY loud volume. Long battery life. Great deal for the price.
Cons:
Only downside is if you want to use it to listen to the radio via your ipod or whatever, you do need a cable connection. Otherwise, listening to the rest of your music is, of course, wireless.

Small size great sound

Written By Todd, Ma on Sunday, December 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For a small speaker it sure sounds great. I was looking for a small cordless speaker to play songs off my iPad with and this one works great. Great sound and the bass sounds great also.
Pros:
Small size, no cords required to use it.
Cons:
It does move (slide)slightly when in use from the thump of the bass. Be sure to clean the rubber feet to prevent this. Other than that this speaker rocks!

Small but powerful. I attached this to my IPOD and cranked it up to full volume with good results. Perfect for music in a room, your patio or on the beach. Not sure I would recommend it for a large party.

Beacon cube

Written By Skeet, Huntington, WV on Thursday, December 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sounding, of course no real low end, very portable and non-invasive in most home and car environments. Better than most computer speakers that do not include the separate subwoofer box. Would highly recommend for anyone desiring a nice portable speaker with sufficient volume for most uses. Extremely surprised by volume it can produce without distortion.
Pros:
Size, sound quality, portability, battery length.
Cons:
Some difficulty with on off button, you have to hold it down longer than you might anticipate five seconds being, would prefer it were a separate button. Slightly complex regarding initial bluetooth set up since it flashes when it is searching for any signal, and flashes, but much faster when in detect/pairing mode.
