Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

Our take on the Oppo BDP-105

by David Brown
3D TV Learn more

Oppo's new flagship player, the BDP-105, replaces the widely acclaimed BDP-95. It offers even better picture and sound — quite an accomplishment since the BDP-95 was an overachiever that looked and sounded better than players costing much more. But what makes the BDP-105 the new must-have component for audiophiles is its array of digital inputs. Besides letting you enjoy your disc collection like never before, you can connect other digital sources to this player and enjoy its extraordinary sound quality. And with 4K upscaling, the BDP-105 is prepared for the next revolution in picture quality. There isn't another player we know of with this kind of versatility.

A universal player that does more than ever

Designed for audiophiles and videophiles, the BDP-105 will make the most of virtually any disc you throw at it. 3D and standard Blu-ray movies look amazing. 2D Blu-ray discs and DVDs can even go three-dimensional thanks to the BDP-105's new 2D-to-3D conversion. Movie soundtracks will reach new heights as this player delivers the latest audio formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD® Master Audio™ with crystal-clear detail. Music will sound fresh and new, especially if you have high-res stereo and multichannel DVD-Audio and SACD discs, which will truly sparkle with the BDP-105.

Digital inputs on BDP-105 back panel

The BDP-105's digital inputs — optical, coaxial, USB type B, and HDMI — let you take advantage of the Oppo's superb audio circuitry to enjoy amazing sound from digital sources like an HDTV, computer, game console, Apple TV®, etc.

"If ever a product deserved to be considered the Swiss Army knife of digital media playback, the BDP-105 is the one. Whether you choose it for multi-format disc playback, for network-streaming capabilities, or to use as a DAC at the heart of a computer-audio system, the BDP-105 will consistently serve up levels of sonic refinement and sophistication that belie its modest price. Enthusiastically recommended."

— From Chris Martens' review in The Absolute Sound, April, 2013

But it's much more than a disc player

Thought your A/V receiver was the centerpiece of your home theater? Think again. With several exciting upgrades, the BDP-105 is poised to become a powerful multimedia hub for all your digital sources. With newly added dual HDMI inputs as well as optical and coaxial digital inputs, you can run gaming consoles, network streaming devices like Apple TV®, and other digital sources through the BDP-105 for truly brilliant picture and sound. The front-panel HDMI input doubles as a Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) input for use with compatible smartphones and tablets, so you can send photos, videos and music from your mobile device to your home theater.

Bypass your computer's soundcard for a transcendent performance

What else is new with Oppo's latest flagship player? It can transform your computer into an audiophile-grade component. Just plug it into the BDP-105's asynchronous USB DAC to minimize jitter and squeeze every ounce of detail from your uncompressed music files, for sound quality that rivals any CD and transport combination. You can even listen through the '105's dedicated headphone amplifier, for DAC and headphone amp performance that by itself would make this player worth the price. Of course, there are tons more features that make the BDP-105 a genuine bargain.

Incredible picture quality and 4K-ready

Oppo's flagship player is a brilliant choice for serious home theaters that include a large flat-panel TV or projector. Those displays really benefit from a top-notch video source that lets them show their stuff. The BDP-105 features some of the latest and most advanced video circuitry available, like Marvell's latest Qdeo™ processor, the Kyoto-G2H. Blu-ray movies possess beautifully natural detail and texture. And Marvell's upconversion yields extraordinary results with DVDs — you'll occasionally be hard-pressed to tell the difference between DVD and Blu-ray. And with 4K upscaling, you'll be ready for the next generation of Ultra High Definition displays. The BDP-105 also includes a new custom-designed dual-core processor to speed up disc loading and player response times over the previous BDP-95.

Uncompromised sound makes this player stand out

While this player's picture quality is stunning, it's the BDP-105's sonic capabilities that really make it a star. It handles every multichannel music and soundtrack format out there. Its 7.1-channel analog output makes the BDP-105 the ideal companion for older A/V receivers and preamp-processors that lack either HDMI connections or decoding for the latest surround sound formats. If you use the analog outputs, you'll enjoy sound quality that's superior to that of most A/V receivers. Oppo's fanatical approach to sound combines careful engineering with high-quality parts. For example, the player's dual audio DACs are the top model in the acclaimed ESS Sabre DAC family. Both are 8-channel DACs — one is dedicated to multichannel audio, while the other provides a stereo listening experience characterized by vanishingly low distortion and exceptional detail and soundstaging.

Wireless streaming with surprising picture and sound

Need more ways to enjoy movies and music? Connect the BDP-105's Ethernet port to your home network, or use the included Wi-Fi® adapter and enjoy Internet movie and music streaming with quality that will surprise you. The '105 supports 1080p streaming for Netflix® and VUDU®, as well as 5.1 surround sound for Netflix and 3D for VUDU. For music, there's Pandora® Internet radio for casual listening, or try downloading high-res FLAC files and putting them on a thumb drive. Pop it in the front-panel USB drive and you'll be amazed at the lifelike sound.

Built like a tank

In a world of lightweight Blu-ray players, Oppo's commitment to solid construction is reassuring. The BDP-105's sturdy drive mechanism and advanced error correction help it sail through discs that cause other players to stumble and stall. One nice extra is two HDMI outputs. That's handy for feeding two displays, like home theaters with both a projector and a flat-panel TV. It's also a great solution if you have an HDMI-equipped receiver that doesn't handle 3D: you can send 3D video to your TV over one HDMI while sending multichannel audio to your receiver with the other. The BDP-105 improves upon the '95's design with a reinforced rigid chassis, and passive cooling so there's no need for an internal fan. Like the previous model, the BDP-105 is a pleasure to use, with soft-touch controls on the front panel and one of the best backlit remotes we've seen.

Haven't heard of Oppo?

For years, Oppo's DVD and Blu-ray players have been favorites with audio/video aficionados. The company has been at the forefront of disc-player design and technology, yet their models are also known for delivering amazing bang for the buck. The BDP-105 is their greatest accomplishment yet, an impressive feat given the tremendous performance of the BDP-95.

How much did we like Oppo's previous flagship universal player? Check out our review of the Oppo BDP-95 Universal 3D Blu-ray player

"The BDP-95 is probably the most reliably enjoyable component I've ever owned. It has worked flawlessly, playing every disc I've thrown at it, including a few that caused other players to stumble. It's not cheap, but when you consider how much it can do, and how well, it's one of the best bargains I know of."

    Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Oppo BDP-105 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

    Disc Type Disc Description
    Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE (DL)
    DVD DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (DL), DVD-RW, DVD+R (DL), DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, SACD, HDCD, CD-R, CD-RW, Kodak Picture CD

Blu-ray Disc: Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

    • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
    • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
    • Much Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
    • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.
Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BDP-105 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Blu-ray 3D: Blu-ray 3D is the Blu-ray disc video format for 3-dimensional (3D) video playback developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). Supporting Full HD (1080p), so you can enjoy high quality 3D video. TV and Blu-ray titles are also required to be 3D compatible to enjoy the 3D experience. Adding a 3D capable A/V Receiver will provide a more engaging audio and video consumer experience.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear-panel Ethernet terminal. Occasionally, Oppo may release new firmware for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Oppo website via the player's Ethernet connection. This player offers automatic firmware notification.

Note: The tested Oppo BDP-105 contained firmware version BDP10X-33-1018 (as of 12/7/2012). Visit Oppo's Help and Support site for the latest firmware updates.

DVD-Audio: DVD-Audio is an extension of the highly popular DVD format, distinguished by its capability to deliver high quality multi-channel audio capability previously unavailable in traditional packaged audio media.

SACD: The BDP-105 plays Super Audio CD (SACD) and supports both stereo and multi-channel high resolution audio programs. Blu-ray Players that support Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. Users can select whether to output the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) signal in its native format over HDMI or convert it into high resolution PCM. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range, some 64x higher resolution then CD, Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just can't hear on a normal CD.

HDCD: High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD) discs let you enjoy expanded dynamic range and improved audio resolution.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a digital video format used to record high definition or standard definition video, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital camcorder and recorded on DVD disc to be played back. The BDP-105 supports AVCHD playback from DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs.

DivX Plus HD: The Oppo BDP-105supports DivX Plus HD playback from DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW discs. The unit supports DivX Plus HD video with a resolution up to 1920 x 1080 pixels.

JPEG Slideshows: The BDP-105 will playback JPEG still image files written to DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs.

Music File Playback: The Oppo Blu-ray disc player supports playback of AAC, FLAC, MP3, PCM, WAV, and WMA audio files recorded onto DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs.

PAL/NTSC Conversion: The BDP-105 supports NTSC and PAL systems for both disc playback and video output. It can also convert content of one system for output in another.

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit based on the age of the viewer, preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the level you set, and it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

    Video Section

Rigid Chassis Construction: Built around a heavy gauge steel chassis, sculptured aluminum faceplate, and center-mounted tray, the BDP-105 is designed to impress as well as to provide a stable base for the highest quality reproduction of your favorite audio/video media. The BDP-105 is also passively cooled, allowing it to run both cool and quiet without the need for internal or external fans.

Qdeo by Marvell: The BDP-105 incorporates Marvell's Kyoto-G2H video processor with the second generation Qdeo technology. Qdeo video processing delivers a truly immersive viewing experience by rendering quiet natural video free of noise and artifacts for all types of content. For high-quality Blu-ray content, the BDP-105 faithfully reproduces the program just as the director intended; for DVD, the up-converted picture quality bridges the visual gap from your current DVD library to Blu-ray discs; for network streaming and user-encoded content at a variety of formats and quality, the BDP-105 offers enhancement options including video noise reduction, compression artifact reduction, intelligent color, contrast, detail and edge enhancements.

HDMI Inputs/Outputs: The Oppo BDP-105 is fitted with dual HDMI outputs and dual HDMI inputs.

    • Dual HDMI v1.4a Outputs: The BDP-105 is equipped with two HDMI v.1.4a output ports and offers the most versatile installation options. You do not have to upgrade your A/V receiver to a 3D model in order to enjoy 3D. One HDMI output of the BDP-105 can be connected to a 3D TV and the other can be connected to a pre-3D HDMI (v1.1-v1.3) A/V receiver. For projector users, you can connect one output to a projector for home theater use and the other to a TV for casual viewing. For a multi-room installation the BDP-105 can output audio and video to two 3D or 2D TVs simultaneously. Both HDMI outputs support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K video signals. Only HDMI 1 output features the superior Marvel QDEO video processor.
    • Dual HDMI Inputs: The BDP-105 provides two HDMI inputs (one on the front-panel and one on the rear-panel) to connect external devices* to take further advantage of its excellent audio and video processing functions. Both HDMI input ports are HDMI v1.4 compatible and can accept up to 1080p high-definition video signal, however, due to internal bandwidth limits, the audio signal is up to 6ch/192kHz or 8ch/96kHz PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, and AAC. The front-panel HDMI input is MHL (Mobile High-definition Link) compatible, which means if it is connected to another MHL-enabled device (like your smartphone) through a MHL cable or adaptor (not included), then this HDMI port is not only capable of accepting high-resolution digital signal, but can also simultaneously charge the connected device.
    * Due to some reported and tested HDMI syncing issues, Oppo does not currently (as of 2/12/13) recommend connecting a cable box to the HDMI input.  They are working on a solution.

Note: The Blu-ray player does not feature any analog video inputs or outputs; such as composite, component, or S-video.

4K Up-Scaling: The Oppo BDP-105 further enhances your home theater experience with four times the resolution of Full HD 1080p, by up-scaling all video sources to 4K (3840 x 2160) output resolution.

True 24p Video + DVD 24P Conversion: Many Blu-ray Discs are recorded at 24 frames-per-second (fps), the same frame rate as the original movie's theatrical release. The BDP-105 can faithfully redeliver the original frames using 1080p 24Hz output (compatible display required) for smoother motion and a flicker-free, film-like home theater experience. DVD 24P Conversion allows  you to enable 24Hz frame rate conversion for DVD for smoother motion picture experience.

Source Direct Mode: For users who wish to use an external video processor, high-end audio/video receiver or display, the BDP-105 offers a "Source Direct" mode. The original audio/video content on the discs is sent out with no additional processing or alteration. The actual output resolution varies by content:

    Content Source Direct Output Resolution
    NTSC DVD 480i
    PAL DVD 576i
Most Blu-ray Movies (film source) 1080p or 1080p/24Hz
Most Blu-ray TV shows or Concerts (video-source) 1080i
    SACD and DVD-Audio 1080p

3D-Ready: The Oppo BDP-105 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. There are three 3D output settings.

    • Auto: Automatically outputs 3D if supported both by the disc content and the display. The player automatically checks for the existence of 3D content on the disc and the 3D compatibility of the TV or projector. If both are qualified, the player sends 3D video from its HDMI output terminals, otherwise only 2D video is sent out.
    • Forced: Always outputs 3D video format for 3D Blu-ray discs. You might experience a black screen (no video output) if your TV is not 3D compatible.
    • Off: Always outputs 2D video format, even when 3D video exists on the disc. This guarantees the video quality if your TV is not 3D compatible, or some necessary part (such as the 3D glasses) is missing.
Note: 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

2D-to-3D Conversion: Take your standard DVD, Blu-ray, and other video content to the next dimension by converting them into 3D with the simple press of a button. The BDP-105 can also adjust the depth and eye convergence levels to suit your personal preference

3D TV Size: This option applies to 3D mode, to help the player adjust the 3D image to the screen size of your HDTV for better visual quality.

x.v.Color: x.v.Color reproduces a wider range of color than the HDTV standard, showing almost all of the colors that the human eye can detect. Currently there is no x.v.Color software available on Blu-ray, but the BDP-105 is ready to take advantage of x.v.Color discs when they become available.

Deep Color: The HDMI output supports Deep Color, increasing the number of bits available for transmission, meaning more colors are displayed. The BDP-105 can provide 4,096 shades of each of the three primary colors, for a total of 68.7 billion possible colors. This results in greater color fidelity, smooth tonal transitions, and ultra-fine gradations between colors. It also enables more shades of gray, for higher contrast ratio.

Aspect Ratio and Zoom Modes: The BDP-105 supports multiple levels of aspect ratio control and image zooming. Users can watch a movie in its original aspect ratio, fit to the full screen, or zoom in to remove the black bars on some titles. For users with a 2.35:1 CIH (Constant Image Height) display system, the player's zoom modes include a vertical stretch mode to work nicely with an anamorphic lens. You can choose from the following Aspect Ratio and Zoom Modes:

    • Aspect Ratio Modes: 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Wide/Auto
    • Zoom Modes: 1:1 (no zooming), Stretch/Compress, Full Screen, or Under Scan.

Subtitle Shift: For customers using a 2.35:1 "Constant Image Height" video projection system, subtitles may get cut off because they are positioned outside of the active video area. The Subtitle Shift feature can be useful to these customers. The player can shift subtitles up or down so they are displayed within the active video area.

Advanced Picture Control: Users can have fine control of brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, sharpness, noise reduction, color, and contrast enhancements. The player can remember and apply three custom picture control modes to suit a variety of viewing conditions and content types.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

    Audio Section

High-Quality Sound: Thanks to the high performance DAC chips, the toroidal power supply, high quality parts, and engineering, the Oppo BDP-105 offers a very detailed sound with an extremely low noise floor and distortion. You will hear details from your music that you have missed before.

Sabre³² Reference Audio DAC: The DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) is one of the most important components for digital audio playback. The Sabre³² Reference ES9018 from ESS Technology is the world's best performing 32-bit audio DAC solution targeted for high-end consumer applications and professional studio equipment. With the ESS patented 32-bit Hyperstream DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator, the Sabre³² Reference DAC delivers an unprecedented DNR (Dynamic Range) of up to 135dB and THD+N (Total Harmonic Distortion plus Noise) of 120dB; the industry's highest performance level that will satisfy even the most demanding audio enthusiast. The BDP-105 uses two ES9018 DAC chips; one for the 7.1-channel output, and another for the dedicated stereo output.

Toroidal Power Supply: A toroidal power transformer offers superior power efficiency and much lower exterior magnetic fields over traditional laminated steel core transformers. The BDP-105's toroidal linear power supply provides a very clean and robust power source to the critical audio components.

Analog Outputs: The Oppo BDP-105 is fitted with unbalanced stereo RCA outputs, XLR balanced stereo outputs, and 7.1ch RCA analog outputs.

    • Unbalanced Stereo RCA Output: The BDP-105 features a dedicated 2-channel analog RCA output with specially optimized ES9018 DAC and output driving stages.
    • XLR Balanced Stereo Output: The balanced output features a true differential signal path all the way from the DAC to the 3-pin XLR connector. By transmitting a pair of differential signals, the balanced output provides better common-mode noise rejection and improves signal quality.
    • 7.1Ch Analog Output: Individual analog 7.1ch surround RCA outputs are ideal to connect to a 7.1ch or 5.1ch surround sound system. Powered by the ES9018 Sabre³² Reference DAC, the BDP-105 delivers an incredible and immersive multi-channel sound stage.

Digital Outputs: For simple and easy connection to more traditional A/V receivers, the BDP-105 features both optical and coaxial outputs for digital audio. The optical and coaxial digital inputs support 48k LPCM, 96k LPCM, 192k PCM, and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS). Due to bandwidth limitations, high resolution audio formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. A reduced resolution version of the same audio track will be output instead.

Digital Inputs: The Oppo BDP-105 can function as a dedicated DAC (digital-to-analog converter) and process external digital audio signals with its internal Sabre³² Reference DAC. Three digital audio inputs (Optical/Coaxial/USB) allow you to connect external audio devices. The processed analog audio is output through the player's stereo RCA, XLR and analog multichannel output terminals.

    • Optical/Coaxial: The BDP-105 supports up to 2ch/96kHz PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, and AAC audio signals through its optical and coaxial digital audio inputs.
    • USB (type-B): The BDP-105 supports up to 2ch/192kHz PCM audio signals through it USB (type-B) port. To utilize the USB (type-A) port with your Windows computer (XP/Vista/7), a software driver will need to be installed on your computer. The driver is available online at Oppo's BDP-105 Support Page. No software driver is required for Mac computers.

Digital Audio Formats: The Blu-ray player's HDMI output is capable of multi-channel bitstream (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital, and DTS) and multi-channel PCM output. The optical and coaxial digital outputs pass either Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream, or 2-channel PCM.

    • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD delivers lossless studio master quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment. The BDP-105 supports bit-stream output of Dolby TrueHD via its HDMI 1.4a output. It can also internally decode Dolby TrueHD into LPCM and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus audio formats are also supported.
    • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio delivers an auditory experience that matches the lifelike images of high-definition video with up to 7.1ch that are bit-for-bit identical to the studio master. The BDP-105 supports bit-stream output of DTS-HD Master Audio. It can also internally decode DTS-HD Master Audio and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS Digital Surround are also supported.

Pure Audio Mode: You can enjoy higher quality music audio by turning off the video processing and output. The Pure Audio mode reduces any potential interference between the video and audio signals.

Note: Because HDMI carries audio together with video, the HDMI video signal cannot be completely turned off. A black screen is transmitted instead to minimize any potential interference.

Audio Format Chart: The following chart provides a reference to what type of audio signal can be expected (when Secondary Audio is off):

Source Format HDMI Output Coaxial/Optical Output Analog Multi-Channel Output
    Bitstream LPCM Bitstream LPCM
    LPCM 2ch LPCM 2ch LPCM 2ch LPCM 2ch LPCM 2ch 2ch
    LPCM 5.1ch LPCM 5.1ch LPCM 5.1ch LPCM 2ch LPCM 2ch 5.1ch

Dolby Digital Dolby Digital LPCM 5.1ch Dolby Digital LPCM 2ch 5.1ch
Dolby Digital Plus Dolby Digital Plus LPCM up to 7.1ch Dolby Digital LPCM 2ch up to 7.1ch
Dolby TrueHD Dolby TrueHD LPCM up to 24-bit/192kHz 7.1ch Dolby Digital LPCM 2ch up to 7.1ch
DTS DTS LPCM up to 7.1ch DTS LPCM 2ch up to 5.1ch
DTS-HD High Resolution DTS-HD High Resolution LPCM up to 7.1ch DTS LPCM 2ch up to 7.1ch
DTS-HD Master Audio DTS-HD Master Audio LPCM up to 24-bit/192kHz 7.1ch DTS LPCM 2ch up to 7.1ch

ARC (Audio Return Channel): Audio Return Channel (ARC) is a feature introduced in HDMI v1.4 which allows you to send digital audio signals from the television back to the player or your receiver. Instead of listening through the TV speakers, ARC allows the sound to be processed and produced by your home theater audio system.

Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Encoding: The Super Audio CD standard is based on Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology, a 1-bit system with a digital sampling frequency 64x that of conventional audio CD's 2,822,400 samples per second. Mixed with as many of the original frequencies as possible, the audio information audible for human ears sounds much more natural than CD. The DSD bitstream can be output via HDMI or the multi-channel output.

Down Mix Mode: Down mix is the process of converting multi-channel audio to less number of channels. For example, converting a 5.1ch source to stereo, or converting a 7.1ch source to 5.1ch. Down mixing allows the audio output from the player to match the exact number of speakers available in your home theater. The following down mix modes are available.

    • LT/RT: Left Total/Right Total. The center and surround channels are mixed into the two front channels according to the LT/RT matrix. A Dolby Pro Logic receiver will decode the two-channel audio into surround audio.
    • Stereo: This mode down-mixes multi-channel audio to 2-channel stereo output. For original stereo content the output will not change. For original multi-channel content the surround and center channels will be mixed with the left and right front channels. Recommended for use with TV sets or stereo receiver/amplifiers.
    • 5.1Ch: This mode enables 5.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. If the source content has more channels, the surround back channels will be mixed into the surround channels.
    • 7.1Ch: This mode enables 7.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. For 6.1ch contents, the left and right surround back speakers will both output the same surround back audio channel.

Speaker Configuration: In the Speaker Configuration menu you can configure speaker settings such as speaker distance, speaker size, crossover frequency, and trim level.

    • Test Tone: Test tone is a special group of artificially-created sounds that are used to test your audio speaker system and help to identify any wiring faults.
    • Speaker Size: The speaker size parameter sets bass filtering control for the speakers. The options are:
      • Large: Bass frequencies are passed to the speakers.
      • Small: Bass frequencies are not passed to the speakers to reduce possible distortion. If the subwoofer is available, bass frequencies are redirected to the subwoofer.
      • On (for subwoofer only): Specifies that a subwoofer is available
      • Off: Speaker for the corresponding position does not exist. Audio for the missing speaker is redirected to other speakers or discarded if redirection is not possible.
    • Crossover: When a speaker size is set to "Small", bass information below the selected crossover frequency (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz) is not passed to the speaker to reduce possible distortion; and if a subwoofer is available, the bass information will be redirected to the subwoofer.
    • Speaker Distance: The speaker distance parameters set delay control for the corresponding audio channel. The delay is used to compensate for the audio time difference caused by the placement of speakers. The speaker distance can be set from 0 to 60'.
    • Trim Level: The speaker trim level parameters sets the volume of each individual channel. The trim level can be set to +/- 10dB in 0.5dB increments. Channel trim is generally not required since most A/V receivers have the capability to adjust.
Note: Speaker Configuration applies to the multi-channel analog audio outputs only. All digital bitstream and LPCM outputs are unaffected by these settings.

Dynamic Range Control (DRC): DRC can smooth out the sonic peaks and valleys common with wide-range digital audio. Enabling DRC may make low level audio more audible during low-level listening. The Dynamic Range Compression is applied on the analog audio output; it also works on the digital audio output (HDMI, Coaxial and Optical) when the audio format is set to PCM.

Headphone Output: The Oppo BDP-105 features a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphones, so you can listen to your music privately. The headphone output's volume can be adjusted within the unit's on-screen menu.

    Incredible Machine

Written By Tripper, McKinney, Texas on Saturday, May 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is hard to find fault with a machine that claims to do everything when in fact it does. The sound quality is incredible, your SACD's never sounded better. The ability to access your network to play your music files is a great feature...and the sound from the Oppo DAC's is the best I've heard. And yes, hi def video is as good as I've seen and the access to Netflix, Pandora, etc. Is quick and easy...the remote even has a quick access button for Netflix. This is an audiophile grade machine that delivers the goods!
    Pros:
Incredible audio quality, quality 'build', video.performance

This was bought as an upgrade to my previous oppo 95, which I originally bought for curiousity sake. I mean how could a Dvd player be so expensive?, but to my amazement it made a huge diffrence in my system, so much that I have completely upgraded everything. The oppo 105 has been upgraded by Modwright company and is just beyond words. I love this player and am a true Oppo fan for life. Susan with crutchfield customer service is truley the best, thank you so much for going above and beyond.
    Pros:
Sleek, beautiful construction, sound and video unbelievable

    Oppo BDP 105

Written By CAL, Highland Park Il on Tuesday, April 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We had tried two other Blu-Ray players with Internet connectivity and were disappointed by the audio and video quality. We then bit the bullet and opted for the much more expensive Oppo. As recommended by the manufacturer we used separate HDMI audio and video outs to our television and our receiver, The results are absolutely stunning. Our CDs are brilliant, Blu-Rays are magnificent and streaming from the Internet is seamless with perfect audio video sync. I would highly recommend this product for anyone who wants to experience superb sound and vision reproduction. As per a review we read prior to our purchase we are now "Oppo happy."

Oppo BDP-105 Audiophile Quality CD Transport

Written By David K, Morristown, NJ on Monday, April 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Oppo BDP-105 to replace an aging Samsung Bluray player that is on its last legs. But, being an audiophile (Emerald Physics speakers, Wyred 4 Sound amps), I wanted to know how it would sound in my stereo rig so I hooked it up using balanced XLR cables and I am absolutely hooked on the sound! As a bonus, I was able to bypass a $1200 preamp/DAC (which I can now sell) because the Oppo has made my system sound so much better without it. The Oppo has opened up the already incredible soundstage while keeping it full and lifelike. Imaging is more precise with increased detail, resolution and musicality. The bass is fast and tighter without any bloat or sense of strain. They have helped make a good speaker sound great beyond what I could have imagined. Eventually, the Oppo BDP-105 will go into my home theater system where it belongs, but in the meantime I may have to put that old Samsung Bluray player on life support. Also, kudos to Crutchfield. Ryan was great to deal with and the payment plan made the purchase a no-brainer.
    Pros:
A rock solid investment in most any audiophile's chain of command.
    Cons:
    None.

    Best Value on the Planet

Written By Tony M., Chicago, IL on Friday, April 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Oppo for an audiophile stereo system as a do-it-all digital source. It replaces my CD player and possibly my stand-alone DAC for computer music (we'll wait to see until after break-in). It comes surprisingly close to the excellent sound I get from the stand-alone DAC which costs about what the the Oppo costs.

This unit is the Swiss Army knife of the digital world. It allows me to listen to my CD, SACD, DVD-Audio and Bluray music collection while also allowing access to the excellent DAC section for my HDTracks downloads; all at an unbelieveable price!!

For other audiophiles reading this; the sonic character is a little lean and bright thus far (about 120 hours beak-in so far). It is extremely detailed, revealing and unforgiving. So careful paring is necessary so you don't end up with a harsh sounding system. This unit is bright with the ribbon tweeters of my speakers which is why I may keep the stand-alone DAC for computer based music. Also, high quality interconnects are a must with this unit.

All in all; extremely high value, unbelievably capable digital hub for your stereo or surround system. Plan on buying seperate components costing 2 to 3 times as much to best it...
    Pros:
Do-it-all digital hub with top-notch audio and video quality at an unbelievably reasonable price. Unmatched customer support and 60 day return policy of Crutchfield.
    Cons:
A tad lean and bright for high-end audio use; although that is a matter of taste.

    Step up from BDP-95

Versatile machine that now plays multichannel dsd files from usb drives. Bravo to Oppo for getting rid of the noisy fan.
    Pros:
You can see where your dollars went.
    Cons:
Not so much a "con" as a suggestion to Oppo: how about incorporating room correction and dual subwoofer crossovers?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This really shouldn't be called a "Blu-Ray" player as it does so much more. If you just want to watch a high quality Blu-Ray Movie I'm sure you can find less expensive units that will be ALMOST as good, but none that combine the Audiophile quality D to A convertors, Video and audio processing , network capability and audiophile quality headphone amplification and ability to connect to older non HDMI equipped receivers with high quality surround sound processing thjat this unit puts together. It really can be considered a video "pre-amp". Check the price of standalone D to A audio convertors, many of the same quality sell for far more than this entire unit. I called the company to ask a question and got a live person on the first ring who knew the product inside and out. No waiting on hold, no muzak while you wait for someone to look something up in a data base about the product you called about, just someone who works at the company that designed the product and knew it's features cold. If the audiophile features are less important consider their less expensive versions. They are all considered to have the highest quality video processing of any consumer products available.
    Pros:
State of the Art Video and Audio quality with the ability to improve the video output of any HDMI equipped device, Audiophile D to A converters, Audiophile Headphone amplifier. To buy all of this separately ( and without the unique features) would easily run 4-5 x the price of the unit .
    Cons:
It is expensive. But in this case it is the bargain of the century.

OPPO BDP-105 is a fine addition to an audio set-up

Written By Kevin V., East Stroudsburg, PA on Saturday, March 23, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although I enjoyed the Blu-Ray, DVD, and SACD sound quality coming through my Yamaha RX-2700, my CD's were virtually un-listenable with my $89 SONY player. Knowing the Yamaha along with My Polk RTI12's were more than capable of producing high quality sound I knew it was time to upgrade my Sony player. I was also interested in adding a high quality DACs to my system for online content, HI-Res digital downloads and SACD playback; the individual pieces were now getting pricey. I began seeing positive reviews for the Oppo BDP-105 late last year which had all the analog and digital bells and whistles I was looking for and knew it would cover all my needs while delivering quality sound and picture. Although I haven't used all the features yet I have once again been enjoying my CD collection. I have been listening to on-line content and my Hi-RES downloads via the asynchronous USB DAC input (192kbps/24bit resolution = studio quality) and couldn't be happier. I have been switching between the HDMI and the Muti-media analog inputs of the Yamaha with amazing sound from either choice... although I think the Analog outputs from the Oppo might be a little warmer than the the straight HDMI connection. Currently I have the Oppo HDMI1 going to my TV and HDMI2 going to the Yamaha receiver while allowing the BDP-105 to do all the decoding. Sounds amazing!

I could have purchased this direct from Oppo but the Crutchfield 60day return policy and available support sold me on it..
    Pros:
A bargain for an audiophile quality muti-format playback device. The external wireless adapter allowed me to extend it to the top of my basement stairs for 95% signal strength. Netflix streaming works extremely well, Pandora sounds great. Oppo support is quick to respond. Set-up is easy. This is much more than a Blu-ray player as another review stated, you could use this straight to a power amp as a pre-amp/processor If you can live without the tone control and Auto-EQ of the receiver.
    Cons:
None so far, I've heard of sync issues through the HDMI input but haven't tried it yet.

got rid of my DAC, OPPO's better, getting rid of my AV/Pre Proc OPPO's better.

They really nailed it with this one. even accidently dropped a 10ft wide 2.35 screen on it. did not even skip the BR disc. or dent the top cover.

Worth every penny and then some.
    Pros:
Everything, even tunnels down through my itunes library and displays cover art while playing.
    Cons:
Spent alot of money on a high end DAC and AV Pre/Proc. Don't need them anymore. Selling at a loss

    Oppo BDP-105

Written By PaulJ, Tucson on Sunday, March 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player is amazing in sound and video quality. I use the analog outputs for 7.1 into my Pioneer Elite home theatre amp so that I get the benefit of the great audio design. The sound field is better than ever. It is all I expected it to be with one exception.

The cable company HD TV box is connected to the HDMI 1 input on the Oppo. The Oppo is connected directly to the tv with HDMI out. When watching tv broadcasts, the audio starts to drift out of sync with the picture until there is a gap of at least 3 seconds. It is very distracting watching this way. When I change channel, the audio/video is again in sync and again starts to drift out of sync until after 10 minutes or so there is a gap of 3 seconds again. If I bypass the Oppo and go directly into my Pioneer with the cable box, there is no problem with sync. After calling Crutchfield, I was informed there is a known issue with the audio/video sync with cable tv boxes AND no date for resolution. Of the other reviews I had read before buying this product, I did not see anyone else mention this issue.

Otherwise, this unit lives up to its reputation. I gave 4 stars due to this issue of sync. I had hoped to use the Oppo as my main processor, but this issue prevents me from doing so.
    Pros:
Great video. Fast load time of DVD. Analog audio output is top notch. Streaming Netflix video looks great (have it connected with CAT 5e, not wireless).
    Cons:
Only issue is audio/video sync problems when using cabe tv box into Oppo unit. No resolution time given to me by Crutchfield.

    Oppo BDP-105

Written By Chuck, Upstate New York on Saturday, March 02, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was exactly as advertised and reviewed by others -- it is rock solid in its build; plays everything you can throw at it; and has a DAC that is world-class (which keep in mind is only relevant if you are using analog cables since the use of the HDMI cable will by-pass the Oppo's DAC). What I wound up doing was double-cabling the box so that everything I play in 5.1 goes through the HDMI (and gets the advantage of what my AVR can do to set up 5.1 properly) and everthing I play in pure stereo goes through analog cables (thereby taking advantage of the DAC).
    Pros:
Extremely well built; knowledgable support staff at Oppo actually helps over the phone; cutting edge video playback, audio playback, and input/outputs.
    Cons:
While this isn't really a "con" for the BDP-105, the price difference between this and the 103 probably outstrips the difference in the achieved value of the 105's better DAC (which according to Oppo is 90%+ of the difference between the two units). If possible, you may want to try both and see if the difference in sound achieved is worth the more than 2X price delta between these two models. My guess is that unless you have a VERY high-end system the difference will be pretty limited.

A Great Player (the 2nd time around)

Written By Jerry B, Southeast Michigan on Monday, February 18, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Boy, let me tell you how glad I am that I purchased this player from Crutchfield. The first player I received had an audio problem. I was a little disappointed but I understand these sort of things happen even to the best of them. What made the difference and why I can leave a five star receive now is the way Crutchfield stepped up and took care of things. They issued a postage paid return label and took the replacement machine out of the box to check it for me before sending it out. The new unit preforms flawlessly and has every feature I wanted, including a USB2 input for my Mac-based music server. The sound is very, very good indeed now that I've got a properly working unit. The Blu-Ray picture is the best I've seen and the Oppo replaced a better than average Pioneer Blu-Ray player. The menu is nicely laid out and the initial set-up and configuration is fairly straight forward and easy to figure out. Anyone half familiar with modern players like this shouldn't even need to open the manual. Also, Five stars to Crutchfield too for their service and support getting the first player swapped out and replaced.
    Pros:
Top-of-the line picture and sound. Just about every input and output imaginable. Crutchfield's great support.
    Cons:
Well, not counting the first player....none.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything about this player is five star.Fast start up time;no waiting for loading times, ect. Beautiful picture. The audio is crisp, clear, and detailed. It sounds so good that I'm thinking of selling my Csrry 303/300 CD player. I had purchaesd a $150.00 player to experiment and see if I liked 3d.The $150.00 player was good, but this player is incredible; a big noticeable differience. The 3D is a whole differient world. The more I watch it, the more I like it.I highly recommened this player.
    Pros:
    All around excellent
    Cons:
    Expensive.

    Great Player, ?Server

Written By JimQ, Fort Collins, CO on Tuesday, January 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The BDP-105 is an great multi format player. Great picture and great sound from both DVD and Blue-Ray. The server side is not as advertised. It will not take an HDMI input without issues. I was asked to load the most current firmware on a new unit which did not solve the problem. Service suggested they are working on the problem. I'm not sure it is honest to advertise a feature which they know is not working at this time. I have not tried other server features!
    Pros:
    Great multi format player.
    Cons:
Not a full function server as advertised, waiting for further firmware which may fix the problem.

Oppo Raises the Bar Again With This Amazing Blu Ray Player

Written By Outlander, Jamestown,ND on Thursday, December 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture and audio quality of this do all blu ray player is absolutely stunning. It gets better every time you turn in it on. All you have to do is play an old favorite concert dvd and you will hear things that you never knew were even in the recording. And the picture is way beyond any blu ray I have owned in the past. The set up is extremely easy and the laundry list of capabilities goes on forever. Tech savvy owners will have a field day with this machine. Being kind of old school I just plugged in my AudioQuest Coffee HDMI and WOW away we go. The 105 is simply superb.
    Pros:
Everything - Superb packaging and state of the art performance.
    Cons:
    ABSOLUTELY NONE!

    Versatility

Written By otbricki, NJ on Saturday, December 08, 2012

This product has the usual Oppo quality. What is unusual is the collection of inputs that allows this player to serve as a video processor and preamp. If you have separate amplifiers or active speakers you do NOT need a preamp in your system any more. This thing is misnamed as a Blu Ray player. It is a complete digital and audio source. Sell your preamp and take advantage of the quality that a simplified audio chain gives you.

    This is simply a breakthrough.
    Pros:
Unique versatility at a very high quality level.
    Cons:
Expensive if you want just a Blu Ray player. Firmware is not complete on introduction.
