Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Sony DSX-S300BTX

by Ken Nail

Sony comes up with a new way to use your iPod® in the car. Their DSX-S300BTX digital media receiver features a unique Tune Tray compartment that holds your iPod, Sony Walkman MP3 player, or USB drive inside the receiver, safe from bumps, knocks, and prying eyes. Just fold down the receiver's face, plug your player into the USB connection, and then close it up inside the receiver — you'll take charge of your player using the receiver's controls

Slick iPod controls
The DSX-S300BTX includes a set of powerful search controls for your iPod, so finding your favorite music files is a snap. You can browse through the usual menus of genre, artist, album, and so on, but you can also slam through hundreds of tracks quickly and easily with Quick-BrowZer™, Or use Zappin™ to listen to short clips from your music while searching. Sony includes SensMe™ software that organizes your music according to mood and tempo, so you can quickly find the music that you'd like to hear.

Bluetooth® built in
You'll appreciate the DSX-300BTX's built-in Bluetooth functionality if you make a lot of phone calls from your car. You can take and make calls hands-free, without having to divert your attention from the road. You can also stream music wirelessly from phones or audio devices with Bluetooth.

Stellar sound
The DSX-S300BTX offers the sonic tools you need to get great sound in your car. EQ7 boasts seven preset tone curves and a 7-band parametric equalizer, while digital time alignment controls create the perfect stereo sweet spot right in front of you. DM+ Advanced (Digital Music Plus Advanced) improves detail and high-frequency sound from compressed audio, so your iPod and music files sound fresh and lively.

Add on and enjoy
For more musical choices, you can add an optional HD Radio™ or satellite radio tuner to the DSX-S300BTX. Ramp up the sound by connecting external amps to the three pairs of high-voltage preamp outputs. Built-in high- and low-pass filters simplify amp setup and control.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Sony recommends that you remove your iPod from the dock when you leave your vehicle. If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The Sony DSX-S300BTX digital media receiver features a detachable fold-down face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The digital media receiver's fold-down face folds-down to access the unit's USB port.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

OEL Display: The 4-line OEL (Organic Electroluminescent Light) display makes it easy to read station and song information.

Image Display: The Sony DSX-S300BTX offers various display images to choose from. You can select between Movie, Spectrum Analyzer (1-3), Wall Paper (1-4), All (displays rotation of all images), or Off.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Dimmer: You can manually dim the display at night, if desired. You can operate the display dimmer automatically, when the vehicle's lights are turned on, or manually. If the dimmer is set to automatic, the orange/white wire in the power harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order to properly work.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button for 1 second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Selectable Button Illumination: The Sony DSX-S300BTX offers selectable blue or red key illumination to compliment your vehicle's interior lighting.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

      Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony DSX-S300BTX FM/AM compact disc player features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Sony DSX-S300BTX utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony DSX-S300BTX are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DSX-S300BTX are as follows:

      • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Three 4-Volt Preamp Outputs with Adjustable Crossovers: The Sony DSX-S300BTX is equipped with 4-volt Front, Rear, and Sub pre-amp outputs with selectable LPF/HPF (Low Pass Filter/High Pass Filter) functionality, giving you the ability to customize the sound output to your external amplifiers.

      • High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.
      • Low Pass Filter: The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the subwoofer preamp output's Phase (Normal/Reverse).

Sound Balance/Fader: The sound balance between the left and right speakers (Balance) and front and rear speakers (Fader) can be adjusted to your preference. You can also adjust the volume level (+/-10dB) of the subwoofer preamp output.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ7, Listening Position, DM+ Advanced, Rear Bass Enhancer, and Dynamic Loudness.

      • EQ7: You can select an equalizer curve from eight music types - Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom EQ7 mode allows  you to make  your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of seven different frequency bands - Band1 (40Hz or 63Hz), Band2 (100Hz or 160Hz), Band3 (250Hz or 400Hz), Band4 (630Hz or 1kHz), Band5 (1.6kHz or 2.5khz), Band6 (4.0kHz or 6.3khz), and Band7 (10.0kHz or 16.0kHz).
      • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, Custom or Off. The Custom Mode lets you precisely calibrate your listening position from each speaker so that the sound delay reach the listener more correctly. The distance is adjustable between 0.99-9.9'. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
      • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
      • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level and signal gain.
      • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Love it

Great radio. I love the internal tray and the extra USB port on the front. The Bluetooth is great but about once a week I have to turn it off and back on when it doesn't recognize my phone (Samsung). Not sure if it is the phone or the head unit. It's not a deal breaker. Pandora streams fine. The BT phone works fine and no one has complained about the call quality. I do not have the external mic. Not sure why they discontinued this phone I love it and was going to buy a second.

Very pleased overall (I've had it for a couple of weeks now). Only slight negative is the garbling of the address book which it had transferred from my LG Octane phone over bluetooth. But it may well be the LG at fault. The buttons are tiny, but easy to use once you get the general idea. The 2DIN adapter Crutchfield sent looks ok, but it doesn't fit perfectly. I should try to get the radio about 1/8" (4mm) further out, so the faceplate doesn't catch the adapter at the bottom.
      Cons:
      Tiny buttons

Installed in my son's 2006 Ford Ranger. Taking out the factory radio was fairly easy, once I figured out which way to pull the levers. Then it truly became the drill of matching wires and finishing. Overall installation was easy. Sounds great and even the technically challenged can get this installed easily. Sound is great and really enjoy the hands free capability for phone calls. One less thing to worry about with a teen on the road.
      Pros:
      Hands free phone feature
      Cons:
Having to connect a lot of wires

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2000 Forester SF. Install went as advertised . Very simple' to disassemble interior of Forester without breaking tabs etc like on my GMC. AM reception has improved tremendously. If you have the interior left rear window antenna, make sure to hook up the blue power antenna wire, otherwise you won't get decent reception.
      Pros:
Works really well with droid phones in bluetooth mode. I pod works seemlessly.
      Cons:
Difficult to learn how to navigate. Counter intuitive. Poorly written manuals. This is very common with overseas outsourcing.

      Wonderful Stereo

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I absolutely love this stereo. I have used the cassette tape ipod adapter and several of the fm transitter ipod adapters not wanting to spend too much for ipod hookups in my car. I finally bit the bullet and sprung for this unit, and I wish I had in the beginning. It is well worth it! I bought this stereo on a clearance sale so it was a superb value for the price. I recommended to my friend after I installed it, and he can't find a model with all the options for less then $280. I still recommend you buy this stereo at that price over ipod fm adapters. Sony makes great products for ipods. I already owned a Sony home stereo and clock radio that work seamlessly with my ipod and iphones (currently have iphone4). This stereo is no different. I was worried bluetooth would not be seamless since I have heard from several people the iphone bluetooth is finicky. I had absolutely zero problem with it. It connected quickly, and now connects automatically every time I get in the car. You can access all your classic ipod interface controls through the head unit, as well as you contacts from your phone. The one only downside to the head unit ipod controls is they limited to the classic ipod controls. It does not allow for any new features I have on my iphone (ipod touch) such as genius. That is possibly corrected on the new models, but I am okay with it because I keep a ipod classic inside the unit. If I listen to my iphone it is easily accessible to control thanks to bluetooth.
      Pros:
Built in bluetooth Hands free calling Works with Pandora from my iPhone4. Charges iPod/iPhone, can do multiple with inside and outside USB connections. No Static like FM transmitter. USB and Bluetooth connections sound better than analog plug many stereos offer.
      Cons:
iPod controls through head unit push button are hard to work in a car. I often select wrong things do to bumps, or just because of the sensitivity. Using the remote gets around this so it is not that big of a deal.

Overall a nice unit for the $.
      Pros:

      Cons:
Taking faceplate on and off is more difficult than it should be, Bluetooth for phone needs improvement.

This is my first deck purchase and it's amazing. I never listen to my radio anymore. Cuz the radio sucks nowadays. Same songs over and over. But thanks to the tune tray all I listen to is my iPod. The sound quality is amazing. Being able to customize your own sound system is so convenient. The color schemes are pretty legit. Id recommend it to those who love listening to their iPods or any other external or internal outputs. Really worth every single penny.
      Pros:
Tune tray. Auto dimmer. Sound adjustment. Subwoofer levels. Different presets for the type of music you'd like to listen to. Remote control. Bluetooth.
      Cons:
No cd player. The volume knob goes in 4 directions. Up down left right and sometimes it's hard to get the right direction. But the remote control makes up for it

The multi control knob is not very easy to use. I find it a little confusing to operate, but I am getting better at it. The Bluetooth Phone function works great, and people tell me they can hear me loud and clear. The bluetooth audio works great too, I can hear pandora and other internet channels, as well has the music on my iPhone.
      Pros:
Bluetooth functions are amazing. Sound is great. Internal and external USB connections.
      Cons:
It takes some time to learn how to use the multi function control knob. The browser is a little confusing.

This stereo is a great value and fairly easy to install. Love the blue tooth feature. I bought this for my daughter who goes to school about 250 miles away and wanted the bluetooth which works great and the mp3 player plug in is awesome as well.
      Pros:
Bluetooth and MP3 player plug in.

I wanted this to have a way to stow my iPod without a bunch of wires tangling up. It does a great job of that and sounds good doing it and charges that iPod too. Haven't used the bluetooth yet but USB drives work well. Great unit at a great price. ($100 off sale)
      Cons:
The only con I have is that it is incompatible with my early model iPod. (works great with my gen 4). I might not have bought it if I had known about it before. I looked back at the info but couldn't find any info stating which generations would work.

Easy to install, great for the ipod or flash drive!!!! lots of EQ flexibility and custom sound parameters. Not much on the low end but I did use a 8" sub and separate amp to round it out better.
      Pros:
lots of customizing flexibility, over all very good sound and value.
      Cons:
sort of complicated display its a bit narrow

      Sony Cust Service Sub Par

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this myself and everything worked except the remote control. After contacting Sony Tech support they sent a new remote. Exact same problem with new remote. Sony was clueless and wanted me to remove entire unit and ship back to them. I called Crutchfield instead of Sony, thinking of returning unit for diff brand. Crutchfield rep asked if I installed optional bluetooth microphone in black jack marked "microphone", different from 1/8" jack on back of unit. He said this was common issue and symptom. So, I checked, moved mic to cord marked mic, and remote started working. 5 stars for Crutchfield, 0 for Sony.
      Pros:
all digital media, no more cd player, great external bluetooth mic installed new 32G USB stick, 1/2 my collection fits on one stick.
      Cons:
Only supports wav and mp3, no flac or ogg theora. No cd player, can't take advantage of free books on cd (cracker barrel) while traveling but, since I carry laptop everywhere I go, just need to rip it first.

This product performs wonderful, sounds good, and works as advertised. The only complaint I can come up with is that getting used to the controls is a little weird and the remote feels cheap.

      Great sound, minor flaws

This stereo was purchased as a replacement for an older Alpine unit. I have to say, my car now sounds like it has a sub woofer in the trunk. I can't believe the sound quality. Puts the Alpine to shame. I mentioned minor flaws, which are just that minor. They have to do with the iPod navigation. It is difficult to push the knob in straight while driving, but you can get use to it. There were other annoyances that have come up like when I turn on the playlist repeat, it does not stay on after turning the stereo off then on. I mention it because all of my music on my iPod is not age appropriate, so when my daughters playlist is finished I have to be quick in volume control or changing it. Otherwise it is a great buy for the money.
      Pros:
Great sound, convenient iPod placement and charging, bluetooth works great!
      Cons:
Repeat does not stay to user settings, there are other quarks as well that I am sure all stereos have

Sony DSX - S330BTX rocks Toyota Echo

Written By joesuburbs, urbana, il on Thursday, January 26, 2012

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

installation was less than 1/2 hour because this unit was replacing a previously stolen unit. After, installation the features and functions of the unit all worked perfectly. The ability to connect to iPhone via Bluetooth is amazing. Handsfree calling through the unit is state of the art... callers sound great coming through the speakers and callers report that my voice is clear with no feedback, road noise or background hum. Setting auto answer to on is another amazing feature... totally hands free operation to receive calls.

Connecting to playlists via Bluetooth is not completely intuitive and I still haven't figured it out... but you can choose playlists and songs via the iPhone via Bluetooth.

Accessing playlists when the phone is docked inside the unit is as easy as pressing the search button on the included remote control.

The dial is a little hard to read in bright daylight, but that might be more a function of the huge amount of windows in the vehicle. There is nowhere to hide from direct sunlight.

Finally, docking the iPhone inside the receiver is kind of cool... but it doesn't fit with all iPhone covers... having to remove the cover prior to use is sort of a show stopper... but with the external USB connection and the Bluetooth option... it is not always necessary. Haven't tried the USB Flash drive and Sony playlist software, but it looks amazing. The ability to drop gigabytes of music onto a Flash drive and create playlists is an amazing innovation.
      Pros:
lots of connectivity options... easy to set-up and use. Sounds great, works great. Affordable.
      Cons:
