Kenwood

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the Kenwood KSC-SW10

by Dominic Devito

The Kenwood KSC-SW10 powered subwoofer might look small, but it delivers impressive bass. This little powerhouse will fit under a seat in most vehicles, where it'll produce low-frequency response equal to that of a larger subwoofer in your trunk. It offers a great solution for those who want to reinforce the bass in their system without taking up a lot of space.

Kenwood uses passive-radiator technology to get the biggest bang possible from such a small enclosure. The built-in amplifier powers the 5"x7" woofer, and the air pressure from the powered speaker moves a non-powered 5"x7" cone next to it, augmenting overall production.

The rigid die-cast enclosure minimizes rattles, while the durable built-in amplifier feeds the speaker up to 150 watts. Kenwood throws in a wired remote, so you can control the bass from the driver's seat. A wiring harness and mounting brackets are also included.

Highlights:

  • compact enclosure with 5"x7" driver and 5"x7" passive radiator
  • built-in amplifier: 38 watts RMS power (150 watts maximum)
  • wired remote for control over:
    • volume level

    Features

Product Overview: The KSC-SW10 amplified subwoofer features a built-in amp (38 watts RMS, 150 watts peak), a 5"x7" woofer, and a 5"x7" passive radiator (listed in the manual as 4-3/4" x 7-1/16"), all housed in a rugged, ultra-compact enclosure that will fit just about anywhere. The KSC-SW10 creates impressive bass through passive radiator technology. Air pressure from the powered 5"x7" woofer moves the 5"x7" passive radiator, augmenting the bass response.

Wired Remote Control: The wired remote control provides fingertip control over your low frequencies. You can raise and lower the bass level and the crossover point, plus switch the phase from 0° to 180°. The remote control can be attached anywhere using the supplied Velcro strip.

Mounting Options: The subwoofer, with its 3-9/16" height, can be mounted flat under a seat in the passenger compartment, or in the trunk. With the included brackets, the subwoofer can be mounted on its side in the trunk or in the cargo area of an SUV.

Mounting Notes: The side bracket extends the overall depth to 4-3/8" and overall width to 16-1/8". If the upper screw holes are used, the side bracket raises the overall height to 9-1/16". The horizontal mount brackets extend the overall depth to 10-3/16"

Cable Management: Even though the connections are on the bottom, the unit mounts completely flat thanks to a 1-3/4" wide and 3/8" deep groove in the bottom for cable management.

    Controls

    Wired Remote Control:

    • Phase: 2-way switch to select the phase of the subwoofer (0° or 180°)
    • Frequency: rotary dial to control the low pass filter frequency (range: 50 to 120 Hz)
    • Level: rotary dial to control the volume level of the subwoofer

Note: There are no controls on the subwoofer.

    Connections

    Bottom of Woofer:

    • Power/Speaker Input: 10-pin jack for use with supplied harness
    • Remote: 6-pin RJ12 jack for use with supplied wired remote
    • Line In: stereo RCA jacks

Good for old guys like me

This sub was really easy to install and fits easily under my Jeep Liberty's driver's seat.

The sub adds a great tone that I cannot get from the door mounted speakers.

If you want your neighbors to hear the baseline to your favorite Lil Wayne song from a few blocks away or to vibrate your car apart, it is not for your. But, if you want to hear more so than feel the bass it is a good pick.

Great if you don't want to wake up the neighbors!

Written By g-money, PA on Tuesday, July 19, 2011

I just installed this in my 2008 scion tc and I must say its pretty nice. I listen to mainly hard rock, alterative, and hiphop/r&b and it sounds pretty good. I will admit on some songs you will get the annoying tinging if you have it set to high. But it did improve my stock system. I now have my bass turned down in the negatives and it still bumps harder than if I had it maxed out. But like I said if you want something that really bumps hard and you listen to alot of rap I wouldnt recommend this at all. You would be better off spending a little more money on a subwoofer, the box, and an amp by themselves. The price was a little steep on the kenwood for what you get though.

Perfect choice for my Chevy Tahoe

Written By AlexL, Hopewell, NJ on Thursday, June 23, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not an audio installer, in fact I am just an older Dad who loves music and needed a subwoofer that was easy to install and that I could move around in my Tahoe when I need space for all the other cargo my Tahoe carries at times.

The Kenwood KSC-SW10 is rugged and small and it adds and delivers the sound my speakers and receiver needed to mix together full music enjoyment.

Easy to install and easy to adjust per my mood and event of the day. A bit pricey yet this product is worth it for music lovers who place clarity, simplicity, ease and space as important features.

Provides a good amount of bass

Written By Dave B, New England on Thursday, June 16, 2011

Installed this under the front passenger seat of my Subaru Impreza. I previously had this unit's ancestor the Woox but sold it. I wanted more bass again so I picked this up. Fits under the seat much better than the older model and sounds tighter running off my JVC headunit. Provides a good amount of bass and it's not too boomy but I don't crank it. Not sure it's worth 249.99 (might want to look at the B8-PT for 50 less and a bigger woofer/more powerful amp) but I got a great deal on it some I'm happy. This probably wouldn't do well in a trunk/hatch so try and put it up front if possible. My only complaint is the wiring harness. I'd prefer to be able to use a regular wiring kit. Also not sure why Kenwood puts the weird connector on the battery cable/remote cable. I just cut them off and put a ring terminal on the battery cable and soldered the remote turn on.

Just had the KSC-SW10 installed in my 1994 Pontiac Trans Am. Until now, my XM radio
sounded wimpy, but not anymore. The subwoofer really filled out what was missing.

This Sub really came just to fulfill my needs. Great sound! I installed this
under a seat of a 1500 Ram Pick-up, fitting perfectly. The sound system really
improved with this sub. Having a remote control is another thing I love, since
I can quickly adjust the sub levels.

    Really recommend this one!

I like this powered sub. I first bought for my 07 camry and put it under the passenger seat. fits perfectly. I enjoyed so much I purchased another for my 97 jeep wrangler. install was quick and easy and love that they don't take up much room. Sounds great once you tweak your sub and radio. This is for people who just want enough bass to enhance the listening experience in their vehicles without all that rattle.

    I think I can... I think I can...

Written By Anonymous, Kenowhere, Wi on Monday, February 15, 2010

This is the lil sub that could, chugging along whimpering for breath under the hearty wail of bass notes. Well, it does quite well for certain types of music: jazz, normal rock and pop, classical. But for harder pounding rock/techno/etc it runs out of steam fast. For real rap music, forget it. This thing rolls over like a possum if you push just a little too hard, thumping and distorting like an old washing machine.

Where this lil guy really excels is soft to medium volume, with normal mainstream music. For the really heavy stuff, run don't walk away from this sub as it will surely disappoint bass hungry junkies.

All that said, install was fairly easy, the wired remote is great because you can make micro adjustments if you have ADHD like me and change the station every 30 seconds (with Sirius it's easy).

I would have given it a 4, but the instructions were written by an 8 year old exchange student, the mounting brackets are kind of a joke, and the bass completely disappoints for heavier music, even at pretty low volumes. But go ahead and pick one up if you just need a lil extra kick. It'll do that pretty well.

    Definitely improved my car audio

Written By Stephen, Ventura, CA on Saturday, January 23, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit for my 05 Matrix, and luckily it fit under the driver's seat
no problem. Fishing all the cables around wasn't too bad and after a call to
Crutchfield's tech team, I had it hooked up in about 3 hours.

At first, it just sounded...blah. I had wanted more bottom end that wouldn't
take up interior space in the car, but I worried maybe the unit wasn't up to
    this rather modest task.

Luckily, I went into the head unit & played with the crossover point, then started
adjusting the gain and crossover controls on the sub. After about 10 minutes
listening to different tracks, I got it dialed in. And then...WOW! This sub
won't shake windows loose, but it really does a nice job of filling out the
bottom end. I listed to some bass-heavy Ozomatli and a huge grin came over my
face. Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" sounds great too. I kid you
not, I sat in my car for an hour and just listened to music until I had to go
    inside and go to bed.

A great unit, but caters to a certain taste

Written By Swaroop, NY, NY on Tuesday, January 19, 2010

I had this unit installed under the seat of my STi, and it barely fit (after a
little bit of trauma to the casing... all is well). The unit does not deliver
an overwhelming bass, but definitely picks up where 2-ways leave off, delivering
the bass necessary to create a full range, without distracting.

I would recommend this unit highly for anyone who is looking for a great sound
and clear definition and balance. For anyone looking for a pounding bass that
shakes your car, this definitely will not work (the bass starts losing
clarity and sounds muffled when turned up too high).

Added sound with no loss of space

Written By Saintchristipher, Orlando, FL on Thursday, December 17, 2009

When the factory radio in my '96 Toyota 4-Runner bit the dust, I replaced it with the Kenwood KDC-X993 head unit, Infinity Reference speakers front and back and this subwoofer. Sound was important however, loosing ANY of my cargo area was not an option. The KSC-SW10 is a tight fit (less than 1/4" on either side of the seat rails) under the drivers seat. But the sound it delivers for the size is very impressive, filling in the bass frequency, and enriching everything played through the system from Amadeus Mozart to ZZ Top. Probably 80% of my music listening is from my iPod and the other 20% is NPR, either way, if this subwoofer is turned of, you know it. The sound just isn't as good

The sub is better adjusted from the head deck however at times I do use the included control for quicker adjustments when on the road.

Pros: Rich bass for its small size, easy installation, no loss of cargo space.

Cons: Because it had to mount under the driver seat (passenger seat has a fan blower in the way) you do feel the vibration under your butt. Not an annoyance however you can feel it.

I would buy this again even if maintaining cargo space wasn't an issue.

    Not worth the money

Written By Marty, Raleigh,NC on Thursday, November 26, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to install in my wife's 2005 Camry. It was compact and would fit neatly. I didn't want pounding bass, but a balanced sound. My kids have the pounding bass in their vehicles, it's not for me or my wife. But, this unit is a total disappointment. One of the mounting screws stripped out before I even mounted the thing and caused it to rattle. But worse, the sound is awful. In order to get audible amount of bass, it has to be driven hard. This causes distortion and popping. I ended up pulling this out and installing my Bazooka from my other car in it for my wife. Now I have this unit sitting on a shelf in the garage and no sub in my favorite car. But, my wife is happy! I would not buy this again or recommend it to anyone. I wish I bought another bazooka.

    Nice little unit

Written By Bob, Ann Arbor, MI on Wednesday, September 30, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this under passenger seat in a Subaru Forester. It hides away nicely, and provides a good, rich base for ordinary listening in a car that size.

The control wheel I mounted hidden in the glove box, since I don't tend to fiddle with it during tunes. Setting it up a bit below half power seems to work well at adding the right amount of bass to pop/rock in a vehicle that size. So don't expect deep booming at high volume, but do expect a nice, richer bass for ordinary listening in a very nice small-footprint hideaway package.

As a side note, I have had some issue with subwoofer "pop" when operating an amateur radio in the vehicle, which resembles what a previous reviewer described when switching sources. The passive speaker in this sub may well be unusually sensitive to that kind of bleed-through of electrical noise in a setup.

    Would buy again

Written By Scott, Morgan Hill, CA on Friday, September 04, 2009

This is a great little sub. If your goal is for your music to sound good you'll be very happy. If your goal is to rattle windows and wake sleeping babies from blocks away this won't do it.

I installed it behind the rear seat in my 2005 F250 crew cab since it didn't fit under the front seats. Sounds great. Install was easy. Currently I have stock speakers, but an upgraded Alpine deck. After I heard the Bose system with a small subwoofer in my wifes 2007 Yukon I had to get one too. I'm glad I did, it really improved the sound of my stereo. I love the wired remote too... easy to reach down and adjust the base depending on what you're listing to at the moment.

Dollar for dollar you're getting a lot of sound with this sub.

    Would not recommend

Written By Dave, Eaton Rapids, MI on Saturday, August 22, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had this unit professionally installed in my 2008 Silverado crew cab underneath the rear seat. The sound is fine at lower volume levels. However when I switch the source from XM or regular radio to a CD or the ipod, the sound will crack loudly. With some songs it's almost constant. I suspect it might be the passive subwoofer next to the powered sub. It is very noticable and annoying. The only way I found to eliminate the problem is by adjusting the bass on the receiver way below the middle setting. When I switch back to radio - the bass is gone and the receiver needs to be readjusted again. There is an adjustment control that comes with the unit, however any adjustments to this does't solve the problem. I see where other reviewers rate this unit fine, it may be something unique to the one I purchased, however I'd recommend going with a different model or brand.

    big sound small package

Written By brad, Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday, July 04, 2009

i wanted a sub to finish off my system, but i didnt want something people down the street would hear, and not having much space in a Jeep Wrangler, I wanted something that could be tucked away out of sight. Well this fit the bill. First of all it is small enough to fit fine under thr front passenger seat. And best of all, it is just the sound i was looking for.It does have way more punch than one would think by the size of it.But best of all, it doesnt rattle the neighbors windows. If you want something to add great balence to your tunes this is the one you need. Everything from old Elvis to Mudvayne is sooooooooooo much better, i cant believe this high of quality sound comes from such a small device. well worth the price!!!!!!

Great for Country, Rock, and Classical

Written By Jim, Yakima, WA on Saturday, July 04, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this in my Chevy Silverado extended cab under the back seat. Installation was easy. I listen to Christian Rock, Country, Classical, and Bluegrass. This sub is perfect for that. I did a lot of sound testing at stores and I don't like the THUMP THUMP that appears to be what other people want out of their subs. I like bass, but I like true bass. If you don't have a sub, the bottom end of the music kind of dissappears. Adding a subwoofer puts that bass in the music and gives it a rich, full, sound. This sub does just that. It can produce some THUMP, but I turn it down so that it doesn't do that. I just want the clean, full, spectrum of sound and this it provides very well.

If you are like me and just like bass and want to hear good bass and not the THUMP, then there is nothing wrong with this subwoofer.

A couple of other notes, the subwoofer is not so powerful that I have to have a capacitor in the system. My truck's alternator and battery can keep up with the power demands. The remote needs to be where you can reach it. I have found that different artist have different recorded levels of bass. Some artist put a lot in and some don't put in much. So, you will need to adjust the bass depending on the artist.

Nice little sub for my tiny little Yaris !

Written By Vince87, Montreal, Qc on Monday, June 01, 2009

Last year I bought the kenwood KSC-WD250 for my girlfriend's hyundai accent and I was really impressed with the quality of the bass it added to her system... I just bought a Yaris HB and wanted the smallest unit possible and bought the KSC-SW10 to put in my trunk. At first, like many reviewers, I was really disappointed by this unit because I got distortion event at low level but after changing from 0 to 180 degree and adjusting my headunit settings (adding a High Pass Frequency filter and turning off loudness) I can put it to maximul level with no distortion at all. I also had to plug it in the front RCA output instead of the sub output for god knows why reason to make it sound better. It gives my a good bass for the size but its not as "warm" and pumping as the KSC-WD250... Probably because of the size of the enclosure.
