Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® 890PRO

by Ralph Graves

The 890PRO combines Harmony's popular Internet-based setup feature with powerful radio frequency (RF) operation for longer range and greater installation flexibility with your audio/video system. It can send commands to equipment installed in a closet, in a cabinet, or even in another room, when used with its companion RF wireless extender (available separately). You can operate up to 15 devices in all, including many lighting, climate control and security systems that use RF control.

Easy, web-based programming
Harmony's online wizard makes it a snap to set up the 890PRO. Just plug the remote into your computer with the provided USB cable, visit Harmony's website, and answer some simple questions about your system. That's it — the setup wizard automatically downloads the necessary codes and programs the remote for you. The site remembers your settings, too, so it's easy to reprogram the 890PRO later if you change or add components.

Simple one-touch operation
"Activity" buttons give you intuitive one-touch control of your system. For example, to play a DVD, just press "play DVD." The remote instantly evaluates your system, turns on or off the appropriate components, selects the proper settings, and starts the DVD player.

    Features

Overview: The Harmony 890 Pro Remote provides simple, intuitive control of even the most elaborate entertainment system for anyone in the family. The remote setup is accomplished through Harmony's interactive web site. The Harmony 890 Pro can control up to 15 devices, including "Z-Wave" wireless home controls for lighting, projection screens, or curtains.

Setup: The Harmony Remote Activities are configured through unique Web Wizard tools on HarmonyRemote.com. Using Logitech's Smart State Database of over 100,000 electronic devices from over 3,000 manufacturers, you can easily customize the remote to your system. The database, together with IR learning, ensures support of all infrared-controlled devices made by any manufacturer, including TiVo, HDVCR, HDTV, Plasma Displays, Monitors, Projectors, Lighting Control, CD/DVD-R, PVR (Personal Video Recorder), Satellite Radios, Amplifiers, DVD Players, Receivers, Dual VCRs and even combination devices like DVD-VCR components.

IR/RF Control: Logitech's Harmony 890 Pro remote control uses infrared (IR) wireless signals to deliver complete control of your home-entertainment system. With an optional RF Wireless Extender (596RFEXT), you can control devices that may be hidden behind cabinets or in other rooms. With a wireless range of up to 100 feet, the Harmony 890 Pro remote sends RF commands to the wireless receiver, which then blasts infrared signals to the components.

Backlighting: The buttons and LCD display are backlit for easy nighttime use.

Lithium-Ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony 890 Pro includes a removable rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station that keeps the remote fully charged. Because the docking station is horizontal, it allows the remote to be used while charging.

Learning Function: In addition to the devices which can be entered using the web interface, this remote can also learn most functions of other infrared remotes.

Activity Buttons: The Harmony 890 Pro remote is equipped with Smart State Technology Activity Control. During setup, you can indicate through the on-line "interview" which components are in what rooms, and what activities you want to program for each room. By indicating on the remote what room you're in (living room, den, kitchen), and what activity you want to begin, you can fully control the components involved in that activity. For example, by pressing "Watch DVD" the remote can turn on the DVD player, TV, and A/V receiver, switch the components to the proper inputs, and start the movie.

Interactive Multi-color Display: Depending on the Activity you are enjoying, the Interactive Display offers additional commands or options allowing you to fully control the Activity or component.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color display. The remote will ask a series of questions, such as "Is the TV on?" or "Is the volume turned up?" in order to troubleshoot the problem and correct it.

Flash Memory: The settings are stored in a non-volatile flash memory so they will never be lost, even when the battery needs charging.

System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.

    System Requirements:

    • IBM or compatible PC:
      • Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, or Vista

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had a horrible experience from the beginning with this product as paired with the
RF extender. First of all it was very complex to set up. I did not experience what the
other reviewers commented was an easy set up. When i called customer support at
logitech they took me thru a very complex (and not found in any of the manuals ) set up
and one that i could never repeat. The remote did operate for a while, but then became
unpaired from the extender and after many hours on the phone the logitech rep even
logitech gave up! the logitech rep said someone would call me with a way to return the
device...but no call ever came. this may work as a universal remote with out the RF
extender, but if you are going to hide your components in a cabinet i would not
    recommend this product.

    Charging/Battery Issues

Written By Matthew, Georgia on Tuesday, September 01, 2009

So, the remote works great when it actually works. However, I am now on
my 3rd cradle, 2nd AC adapter and 3rd battery. The first two times that I
had a problem, Logitech replaced the remote without any questions or a
problem. Now, they will not help me despite the number of issues that I
have had. This most recent time, the battery swelled to the point it cracked
the plastic case of the remote. They even have a picture on their support
website of this problem and call it "normal." In fact, on their support
website even offer new battery doors and batteries for the remote, but
they are out of stock with no information on when inventory will be
replenished. They also offer replacement AC adapters and charging cradles.
There is clearly a problem with the charging system/battery on these
remotes. It is too bad, really, because the remote is pretty slick when it
    actually works. Buyer beware.

    Great Remote

Written By Reg, New Jersey on Tuesday, February 17, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It replaced my $1,000 remote without any problems. Easy to hold in hand. Has enough "hard keys" to handle the regular functions and yet full programability for the "soft" keys. I was skeptical, but we (my wife and I) like it! After a few hickups in the new system the programming was easy and recognized all of our equipment with ease. Logitech Tech support was great and knew what needed to be done to get up and running. Called three times over two days and all three were helpful and resolved the issue. One issue was a software "bug" that they were able to fix remotely. - Very happy with the purchase. And, as always with Crutchfield sales & support!

    Harmony 890 Pro

Written By RENEE, Davison, MI on Friday, October 03, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great remote! I first had the Harmony 1000 which I loved except it wouldn't work with 2 RF Extenders which I needed so per a Logitech rep. I switched to a Harmony 890 Pro Series. Easy set up and works great. The down side is that it has black buttons and they are very very difficult to see. I wish it was a touch screen like the 1000 but you can't have everything!!!

    Avoid! Flawed Design

Written By Gregg, San Francisco, CA on Sunday, August 24, 2008

I am on my second charging cradle which just failed as did the first. There is a problem with the design of the cradle such that after a while the remote handset will not seat properly and fail to charge. I believe Logitech knows this but will not recall the units. Instead, they have set up a complex complaint process hoping that very few customers will go through it. I certainly won't go through it again but I certainly will avoid purchasing Logitech products.

    Excellent Remote

Written By Keith, Phoenix, Arizona on Monday, August 18, 2008

First of let me say that set up for this remote is extremely easy. I was worried after reading a few of these reviews that it would be difficult, but it was not. I was walked through the initial set up in less than 10 minutes. Using the remote is very simple as well, I have it set to control three different rooms worth of components and it does so with ease.
The only issue that I have had so far is that I am unable to get the remote to control my ceiling fan/light even though it recognizes the make and model. But this is minor, considering my primary purpose was to control my home theater system. Other small issue is that the remotes graphics are pretty weak, but really who cares. Great remote, worth purchasing.

    Logitech® Harmony® 890PRO

Written By Jerry, Pleasanton, CA on Monday, August 11, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Complicated setup even for experienced computer user. Biggest problem is the usability: LCD screen is just terrible (has the resolution of a cheap toy)! And the small buttons are impossible to read at night. Not at all consistent with it's price tag plus an additional $100 to use the RF.

Once you get past these shortcomings (not easy), the RF functionality works reasonably well.

    Set-up Hassle

Written By BK, Denver, CO on Saturday, August 09, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Web set-up didn't work out of box. Called Support. No joke -3 HOURS- on
the phone with two different reps walking me through the same steps over
and over without success. Then told extender might be bad and need
replacement. But first sent e-mail list of steps to take. No results. Third
call to support and got a guy who actually knew what he was doing. Got it
up and running in the less than 20 minutes it should have taken in the first
place. With all this and my other efforts it took about 7 hours to get this
working a few minutes ago. Jury still out on product's performance.

Great remote for RF control (components behind closed doors)

Written By Vic, Port Charlotte, FL on Sunday, June 15, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Took 2 tries to get the RF feature to work. But otherwise set-up online was straightforward. Enter make/model of all your devices. Then askes simple questions (example "when watching TV what device controls volume?" in my case, the A/V receiver). It works perfectly and amazingly well with all my components. Keeps your setup online...so restoring should be easy.

Only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is that many of the buttons are small and VERY difficult to read. Takes a couple days to memorize where those buttons are.

    Gotta Have remote

Written By $ Techno George $, Long Beach, Ca on Friday, May 16, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was THAT guy who had 3-4 remotes for years now and finally manned up and purchased the 890 pro. I own a LG 24" flat screen, HD Media center, Toshiba HD player, and PS3.
First off, I have purchased several items from crutchfield and they are top-notch in every aspect from research to purchase experience to tech. support. Awesome!
I got the remote on my day off and jumped right on to the computer and threw the disk in the drive. Initial set-up is really easy to follow and it took about 30-40 minutes which is totally fine because youre inputting information about your entertainment system. After I did the initializing, everything worked together and no more multiple remotes. The remote is awesome because you can customize EVERYTHING from the way buttons react to which button does what. After the first time setup, I have gone back a few times and customized even more buttons etc. HIGHLY recommend this remote to everyone. If you have common sense, anyone in your household can operate it. I was sic of explaining the old(Charter HD box) remote to every guest that comes and wants to watch TV.
I have a couple of minor gripes which are not a big deal. One is that the 890pro does not control PS3, but that is not Logitechs fault. the buttons are kinda smallish and really close together. those are the only gripes and are def. not deal breakers. Sit Back< hit one button and it does all the work for you!

    Poor customer support

Written By Nicole, Carlisle, PA on Monday, March 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My husband and I purchased this remote in December and had no problems with it fresh out of the box. Beginning less than 3 months later, we noticed that the remote wasn't charging when placed on the cradle. Through an initial call to Logitech customer support, I was given an incident number and told that if the charging problem continued to just call back and I would be referred to warranty/returns. This seemed like a fair solution. With a 2nd call placed to Logitech after the problem did persist, I was told the same thing, call back if the problem persists. I am greatly disappointed in the lackluster customer support that comes with this product.

    Disappointed

Written By Peter, Westchester, NY on Saturday, February 16, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fresh out of the box from Crutchfield, the keyboard appears to be inoperable. Have just gone through trouble shooting with Logitech via phone with no success. Rep gave me case# and said I should receive e-mail instructions within 2-3 days for next steps. Bummer. I mounted my t.v. on the wall with components in back office, relying on this radio remote.

    What a gift!

Written By Ric, Hampshire, Il on Tuesday, January 29, 2008

My son bought me this for Christmas. Since I didn't pick it out or research it myself, I was a little skeptical.

Setup was a snap via the internet. Now I have one remote that does everything and a place to put my coffee cup on the table that was previously occupied by five remotes.

That college tuition is starting to pay off...I could not be more pleased with the Harmony remote or my son.

    Logitech® Harmony® 890PRO

Written By Gregory, North Port, FL on Saturday, January 26, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this remote in anticipation of having a home theatre installed. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. Now, granted, I didn't set up the remote or the IR, so I can see where some would say it is difficult to set up. But the remote and IR work flawlessly. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this remote to anyone.

    Great remote

Written By Joel, Tulsa, OK on Thursday, January 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just keep in mind that it would be difficult for any remote at this price-point to save the world. Nobody's perfect, but this one comes close. With a little patience and common sense, this remote can be your home theater's best friend. Not only does it make my other remotes obsolete, it integrates z-wave control of my lighting and the wireless extender rf unit has moved my a/v gear into a nearby closet so it has uncluttered my theater even more. Extensive support through Logitech and on forums don't hurt either.
