Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Polk Audio RTi A9

by Loren Barstow

Audiophile-quality sound from a great-looking tower speaker

Meet the flagship speaker in Polk's newly redesigned RTi Series. The RTi A9 floor-standing tower speaker combines a handsome, real wood veneer finish with the kind of performance that pleases even critical listeners.

A high-tech approach to accurate sound

Cross-section

An inside view of this speaker's careful driver design.

This speaker's carefully designed drivers undergo laser testing to help identify and eliminate resonance points, ensuring smooth, accurate response. Its asymmetric cabinet helps it deliver rich, clear sound by combating vibration and increasing rigidity. The A9 also includes Polk's exclusive PowerPort® technology that reduces noisy air turbulence and increases low-frequency output. You'll enjoy clear highs, rich bass, and open, natural-sounding midrange.

Additional high-end features

Two sets of gold-plated five-way binding posts let you biamp or biwire the RTi A9 for the best possible sound. An anti-diffraction grille helps it deliver a large, three-dimensional soundstage with pinpoint-accurate stereo imaging. Adjustable spikes provide stability on both carpeted and hardwood floors.

Recommended center channel speaker: Polk CSi A6.
Recommended surround speakers: Polk RTi A3 or FXi A6.

    Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: The speaker features three 7" polymer composite woofers. Three 7" woofers have the surface area of a single large woofer with the low mass and acceleration of small woofers, resulting in tighter, more accurate bass response. Each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Polymer Composite Midranges: The speaker has two 5-1/4" polymer composite midranges for smooth wide-range response with low distortion. For high performance durability, each midrange uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeter: The speaker has a single 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. The tweeter features mylar bypass capacitors in the crossovers to extend high frequency response and improve detail and transparency. The tweeter also features low viscosity ferro-fluid cooling with a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

    Enclosure Design

Damped Asymmetric Hex Laminate (DAHLI) Cabinet Design: All-MDF construction with massive asymmetric cabinet bracing ensures a resonance-free enclosure for accurate sound. The asymmetric design is made from a 6-layer laminate with 5 viscous layers to create the optimal shear damping (OSD) system. The elegant styling aside, curved cabinets not only result in a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure, but the curved walls also produce less audible coloration from panel resonances.

Power Port Venting System: The speaker has a rear-firing Power Port venting system built into its back plate for precise deep bass response from the floor-standing speaker's three 7" polymer composite woofers. This venting system allows air velocity to slow gradually, vastly reducing air turbulence, and delivering greater bass efficiency than conventional ports.

Note: The two 5-1/4" midrange drivers feature a sealed cabinet.

Anti-Diffraction Grilles: The floating anti-diffraction grilles minimize grille diffraction for spacious, 3-dimensional imaging.

    Connections

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

    Mounting Options

Adjustable Leveling Spike Feet: The adjustable leveling spike feet that can be screwed onto the bottom of the speaker's attached base provide stability on any type of flooring. The spike feet adds approximately 0.875" to the speaker's overall height when screwed all the way in.

    Specifications & Dimensions

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 18Hz-27kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 30-26kHz.

Width: The main body of the speaker is 8.6875" wide but the speakers attached feet extend beyond each side of the speaker, giving the speaker and overall width of 10.6875".

Let me start by saying I love these loudspeakers, they sound GREAT! I've used the Polk RTi A9's as my main left and right for about a year, and after a short break-in period they really came out. Music sounds fantastic. The sound stage sets the musicians realistically. They're very clear and concise, I've heard more detail from my CDs than ever before.

I use my A9's mostly for home theater and they shine with matched speakers. Mine are set up with the voice-matched CSI A6 center and FXI A6 surrounds. The effects seamlessly envelope me. I like my movie sound loud and detailed, so I'm in it. These do that job superbly. Did I say I loved these speakers yet?

As many customer reviews have also stated, the A9's need power. A lot of power. They still sounded good when I drove them off of a 7.1 Onkyo receiver at 110 watts, but the lows suffered some. When I bi-amped them the lows came out and really started to hit. I think these speakers would gain even more from more power and a separate powerful amp (they can take 500 watts!).

The cabinets are very nice and the cherry color blends in well in my living room. These speakers are big, they do have a dominating presence which I love but, unfortunately, my wife doesn't. They are also very heavy, so moving them around is kind of a pain, but it's a good sign of the quality of their build.

    Positives: Clear, detailed, loud.

Not So Positives: Wife appreciation factor, need a whole lot of power to make them really shine.

    Polk Audio RTi-A9

Written By Music Lover, Ijamsville, MD on Friday, March 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these speakers two weeks ago and still breaking them in. They are heavy build and beautiful wood finish look like fine pieces of furniture. Sound was excellent but seem to be under power even though my receiver is a Yamaha RX-A2020 delivers 140 watt per channel and I have them bi-amp connection. I listen to them in low volume level in early morning or late at nigh and they sounds clear and warm, I though the bass was week but since I only use them to listen to music I am not in a hurry for a subwoofer. I read other people threats saying these speaker needs more power to sound at their best so I am in the process of looking for appropriate speaker preamp. I probably keep these speakers for a very long time.
    Pros:
Sounds Great ! solid build look beautiful
    Cons:
    Need a lot of power

I bought two of these speakers about a year ago. Buy them. They have taken all I've given them....beautifully. I also bought a subwoofer, which I have found to be necessary with these speakers. The sound quality and power handling are more than adequate for any house. I moved my A9s to my weekend home, and recently purchased the A7s for my apartment.....more than adequate.....dont forget: get a subwoofer!

These are my first home theater speakers, and they are very nice sounding. First thing I said when I opened the box was "wow" due to their size. I've heard complaints about them being to "bright" for music, although I don't have anything to compare them to they sound fine to me. I'm driving them with a Yamaha RX-A3020, once I get the surrounds installed, I will probably be upgrading to an external amp for these beasts.

Spectacular speakers. I bought these scratch and dent from Crutchfield and the damage was cosmetic and minimal. Definitely worth the savings. Sound is excellent. Nice balance from deep lows to high highs, as well as at a range of volumes. The more I listen, the more I like them. I'm using the small powered Polk sub with them, since it was free from Crutchfield, but it's really not necessary. My 110 watt receiver seems to be fine with them, but I'd be curious to try something bigger since many reviewers seem to recommend more power. However, I've never heard them distort all the way up to uncomfortable volumes. Enjoying them for both music in stereo and 5.1 movies with other Polk speakers. Very happy with this purchase, especially having never heard them before buying.

Over all, a very good speaker, however, with 3 woofers, I find that it is weak in the bass area. I would recommend them however.

I have had these speakers almost a month now and all I can say is wow!!! I was in the middle of finishing my HT when I traded horses mid-stream. I had and still do have, klipsch rf-82's when I decided to go with the Rti a9. They both are great speakers, but, I looked at the surrounds and wanted to go in the direction of the polks over klipsch. The polks sound is alot warmer to me, and they blow away the klipschs in the looks department. Very happy with my Rti a9's. Crutchfield was very easy and nice to order from. Great service.
    Pros:
A great big beautiful looking and sounding speaker.
    Cons:
    None.

    Great Speakers

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers! Very firm and true sounding. You do need to have some power to get the most out of them I am running an Onkyo TX-NR1009 with an M-282, the Receiver does the Low end and the 282 does the highs. It sound very nice but I still feel that it could stand more power. The range on these is really nice, I have spent some time listening to vinyl and am very pleased with the results. I should also note that these speakers are BIG! You need to have some room to move these around.. Very pleased and will keep for a while..
    Pros:
Great sound, true feeling. Look impressive, great sound. Great lows and strong mids. The highs seem very natural to me
    Cons:
Huge, heavy and hard to move around..

Stop wasting your time and buy these...

Written By Travis, Houston, TX on Sunday, July 24, 2011

A very musical speaker; could possibly be the last tower speakers you'll ever buy. The sound is very neutral and consistent from top to bottom. The bass is accurate and natural, but has the ability to take charge for more demanding audio tracks, and can go down to 20 hz quite comfortably. The Cherry Finish is beautiful and will blend well with other shades of wood. For the quality of product, the price is very reasonable. Also, they will sound very bright if under-powered. Moving them around can be awkward because of the shape and size of the cabinets, so save yourself the trouble and get someone to help you move them...use gloves. The RTi A9's are very capable speakers; however you should give just as much consideration to your other equipment. NO commercially-available receiver will do these towers justice because they have so many drivers. I originally bi-amped them with a TX-NR906 (~290 watts/channel.one of the most powerful ones out there), and while the sound was decent, it was obvious that my receiver could not fully control the entire range of the speaker in addition to the demands of the other speakers in my HT system. I highly recommend that you use quality amplifiers (such as XPA-1's) if you desire to use the RTi A9's as they were meant to be used.

Clear and Even Sound but Bass Needs Help

Written By Dono from Ohio, West Chester, OH on Friday, June 17, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are really well made and high-quality speakers, and I like them. They seem to require significant power to maximize the bass and probably should be bi-amped. Their forte is mid-range and smooth high-end but not bass. I will have to connect my powered sub to augment the deficiency. This is pretty much par for the course for Polk. Recommended, but get a sub to be completely happy.

    Jawdropping !

Written By Gene F, Binghamton, NY on Friday, May 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these bad boys because I like to play my music LOUD and let me tell you. My whole music collection sounds new again. I cranked up Joe Bonamassa when I hooked these up and my dear Lord !! I replaced 4 McIntosh ML-1C speakers I had since the 80's and was sad to see them go, but my expectations were more than met. They just come alive when you put the power to them. I have 2 NAD amps bridged to put out two mono sources of 300 watts and man alive, my friends sat there in utter disbelief. You aren't going to get the potential out of these if you have some wussy little receiver driving these. The crispness and spacial sound stage these things produce are stunning. If you got the space and the place, buy them now. You won't be sorry. Thanks Crutchfield, for a very pleasant experience.

    POLKS ROCK!!!

Written By Gary, Ohio on Saturday, March 26, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely amazing!!! Cherry finish is spectacular. Speakers are huge and very impressive even without any sound coming from them. Crutchfield delivered on time and without any issues. I had these for a week now and am still breaking them in. I purchased these exclusively for 2 channel stereo, but since I have a polk surround system, I am breaking them in on that and they blend seamlessly. I couldn't resist putting a few cd's in my bluray palyer to hear some 2 channel stereo and I am absolutely blown away with the range of sound, I hear so much more off familiar cd's than I have ever before. I turned the tv on a jazz listening station (im a rock guy) an oh my goodness, they are awesome. the highs are there, the lows are there, and everything in between is there. I have been using these in surround mode with my sub turned off, so I can check the bass on these babies and its definately there, of course for movies you need a sub, but for music, I dont think I will. I haven't cranked these puppies up yet to some heavy Metallica yet, at least not loud, but I can already tell they have what it takes. Im so glad I went with Polks flagship model. Thank you Crutchfield, and thank all of you who post reviews to make this purchase much easier. I love my Polks.

    RTi A9s Rock House!

Written By Tom K., Mission Viejo, CA on Sunday, March 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I never liked watching BR movies on my Sony LCD with the dinky sound. Some great floor standing speakers were in order. After a lot of research, I decided to take the plunge on a pair of speakers that would do justice to the home theater setup. The RTi A9's do the job extremely well and the double set of wire ports in the back tells you these were built for bi-amping (http://community.crutchfield.com/blogs/av_tips/archive/2008/04/23/are-you-sitting-on-a-wealth-of-untapped-power.aspx). It's something you should take full advantage of along with a good receiver to handle all that power.

All you have to do now is put in "Apocalypse Now" on BR, cue up to the "Ride of the Valkyries" helicopter scene and experience nirvana. :)

SERVICE. PLEASE DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME THE POLKS AND EMOTIVA ARE GREAT PRODUCTS ,I JUST GOT CARRY AWAY AND PLAY THEM AT 3/4 VOL FOR TO LONG, WHICH I KNOW NOW YOU CAN'T DO, 1/2 IS PLENTY LOUD. Do you want to bring more life into your music?

Written By MarkF, Crossville, TN on Wednesday, January 19, 2011

I've recently bought the Marantz SR7005 receiver to push these. I've bi-amped 125 Watts into these speakers, running a total of 500 watts. I've gotta tell you, words cannot describe the sound quality that is produced. I'm hearing stuff that I've never heard in my music. They are built very solid and aesthetically gorgeous. There is now way you can get this quality of sound out of compact speakers. These might seem pricey, but like most everything in life, you get what you pay for. Be sure to at least push these with some power. Highly Recommended.

    Big Speakers Rock!

Written By Bob, Montgomery, Al on Monday, December 20, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a lot of web research on these speakers due to the price. Almost all reviews were excellent. After having mine for several weeks I totally agree. I upgraded from my Def Tech's BP-8's. The A9's are awesome speakers and fill the room with music. What I like most about these is how good they sound at low volume. I'm mostly a two channel music guy and my cd and lp collection has never sounded better. I also got a sub but these have plenty of bass. I'm using a Yamaha RS-700 100 watt receiver and the pairing is great. They are big 70lbs each and require special shipping but Crutchfield called me within 2 minutes to fill me in on details. Great service and great speakers. Sound great with rock, jazz. blues.

Ordered 2 of these from the scratch and dent outlet. One was near perfect and the other was damaged in shipping. One call and the damaged speaker was picked up and the replacement exceeded my expectations. If you look up customer service in the dictionary, the definition should read CRUTCHFIELD! Oh yeah, these polks rock, excellent bass, detailed midrange, and clear smooth highs. Could not be more pleased with my purchase.

    Polk RTi A9

Written By Christopher, Chicagoland, Il on Tuesday, May 12, 2009

I replaced an older Bose system with the A9's.

I took Crutchfields recommendation on these speakers, while the price was a bit daunting I really wanted better sound out of music and movies. I REALLY got it!

My receiver is the Denon AVR-3808CI.

Movies and especially music have really come to life out of these speakers. My cd collection has never had the workout it is getting since I installed the A9's. There is an extra dimension to everything that comes out of the speakers that was NOT there before. All of the sound is clear and crisp. Highs are high but not ice pick high. Mid's are.......beautiful and the lows are bassy but not muddy.

The cabinets are a thing of beauty. They certainly added to the decor of my family room.

They are pricey but worth it in my opinion. If you are in the market for a set of forever speakers and have the extra $, these may just be the ones for you. They certainly are for me.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Loved these speakers. I bought two scratch and dent and they are perfect.

My amp pushes out 300w so these are perfect as front speakers. By far the best looking without the front grill and the sound is near perfect.

Delivery and Cruthfield were great. I even bought another for a back speaker and am saving for another. Thanks

    Polk Audio RTi A9

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had these speakers for about 2 months now and I am very pleased. Mids and highs are crystal clear even at extreme volume levels. Bass response is great at all but the highest of volume levels. I have'em Bi-amped with an Onkyo 805 which puts out 260 watts to each speaker. They truely a joy to listen to and I have to fight to keep from cranking the volume up constantly....even at 5 in the morining...with housemates. Money well spent.
