Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDA-9887

Premium sound and performance from Alpine

Alpine CDA-9887 CD receiver

Alpine's best-sounding CD receiver, the CDA-9887, features an impressive sonic "tool box" that gives you incredible control over the way your music sounds. A premium Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter delivers the best possible sound from your CDs, while 6-channel digital time correction compensates for poor speaker placement, creating the perfect "sweet spot" in your car. Use the built-in 7-band equalizer to make broad adjustments, or switch to 5-band parametric mode to zero in on specific frequencies.

IMPRINT technology for customized sound

Alpine KTX-100EQ IMPRINT Sound Calibration Kit for CDA-9887

IMPRINT™ technology lets you add an optional sound tuning kit that measures the acoustics of your vehicle's interior, then feeds that information to the CDA-9887. The stereo adjusts automatically to this image of your vehicle's acoustics, tuning frequency response and calibrating delay times to create a perfect listening space.

High-definition 2-line display

The BioLite™ display renders 2 lines of song text and system information with incredible clarity, in any lighting conditions. Add Alpine's Full Speed iPod® cable for super-fast access to your music files — the Percentage Search feature lets you use preset buttons to jump through your playlist.

Built-in time correction for a superior stereo image

The CDA-9887 offers built-in time correction, which allows you to delay the audio information coming from the front speakers so that it reaches your ears at the same time as the sound from the rear speakers. Properly adjusted, you'll hear a much more defined stereo image.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Display Features

BioLite Display: The crisp, clear, white on black BioLite display uses biochemical luminescence technology that provides outstanding visibility even in daylight. It is 40% brighter than normal displays, with higher resolution and better contrast. In addition, it has a much wider viewing angle than conventional displays.

Background Animation Displays: You can select from 4 different animated background displays: falling "Vs", glimmering water surface, gears, or pulsating shapes (hearts, diamonds, musical notes, circles, and stars). The animation displays can be turned off for a plain black background.

Variable Button Illumination: You can change the lighting color of the buttons on the unit's face-panel. You can choose from the following illumination types.

    • Type 1: All buttons on unit illuminate blue.
    • Type 2: Buttons illuminate green and blue.
    • Type 3: Buttons illuminate red and blue.
    • Type 4: Buttons illuminate orange and red.
    • Type 5: All buttons on unit illuminate red.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Blackout: To reduce power consumption you can turn off the display and button back lighting. When the Blackout Mode is turned on the display will illuminate for five seconds each time you press a button.

Changer Name: You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the CD changer input; Changer, USB, or Portable.

Opening Message: When engaged, this feature will display a special message each time you turn on the radio on certain dates; Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday (after you program your birth date), etc.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

24-Bit Burr Brown D/A Converter: The CDA-9887 uses a 24-bit Burr Brown D/A converter for superb sound quality and playback of WMA, MP3 and AAC files. With three pairs of pre-outs (4V) and built-in 18W x 4RMS amplifier, the CDA-9887 offers great flexibility to add on other digital sources.

Built-In Equalizer: 10 typical equalizer settings are preset at the factory for a variety of musical source material. You can select from - Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz&Blues, Electrical Dance, Hip Hop&Rap, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical. The headunit also features six custom preset curves that you can save by adjusting the units built-in Parametric EQ or Graphic EQ.

    • 5- Band Parametric EQ: The built-in Parametric EQ allows you to adjust the following 5 frequency bands in 1/3 octave steps from -6 to +6 dB at a bandwidth Q factor of 1, 1.5 or 3.
      • Band 1: 20 Hz to 80 Hz
      • Band 2: 50 Hz to 200 Hz
      • Band 3: 125 Hz to 3.2 kHz
      • Band 4: 315 Hz to 8 kHz
      • Band 5: 800 Hz to 20 kHz
    • 7-Band Graphic EQ: The built-in Graphic EQ allows you to adjust the following 7 frequencies from -6 to +6 dB.
      • Frequency 1: 63 Hz
      • Frequency 2: 150 Hz
      • Frequency 3: 400 Hz
      • Frequency 4: 1 kHz
      • Frequency 5: 2.5 kHz
      • Frequency 6: 6.3 kHz
      • Frequency 7: 17.5 kHz

Bass and Treble Controls: The headunit features independent Bass and Treble controls that allow you to adjust each setting from -7 to +7 once you have calibrated your vehicle's interior sound with the optional Alpine IMPRINT software (500KTX100E, sold separately).

Built-In Crossover: This unit is equipped with a built-in active crossover. The crossover limits the frequencies delivered to the unit's speaker and line-level outputs. Each channel is controlled independently so each speaker pair can be driven by the frequencies for which they have been optimally designed to produce. The crossover adjusts the high pass filter or low pass filter of each band along with the slope. You can adjust the following crossover settings.

    • High Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs or line-level outputs can be set to filter out low frequencies below 20 to 200 Hz with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct. In addition you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB.
    • Low Pass Filter: The subwoofer line-level outputs can be set to filter out high frequencies above 20 to 200 Hz with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct. In addition you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB.

Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance of each speaker and subwoofer (6-channel) to the listener from 0 to 132.7 inches.

Media Xpander: The MX (Media Xpander) mode makes vocal or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. The FM radio, CD, or connected external audio source will be able to reproduce the music clearly even in cars with a lot of road noise.

MultEQ: MultEQ, developed by Audyssey Labs, automatically corrects the audio for the listening environment inside your vehicle. The system is optimized for selected positions in the vehicle; the KTX-100EQ IMPRINT Specialist Tuning Kit is available for self-installers (500KTX100E, sold separately). The kit includes the IMPRINT Sound Manager set-up software (CD-ROM for PC), a PC USB interface/calibration unit, cables and a microphone. The software allows the installer to automatically tune the system right in the vehicle. The system can be tuned to match your taste, with the complete tuning process taking approximately 20 minutes. MultEQ along with the IMPRINT software and hardware captures frequency and time domain information from the vehicle's actual acoustical environment and quickly identifies any problems. It then creates a set of equalization filters to correct frequency response and time domain problems for each speaker in the vehicle. It also removes sound distortion caused by the specific acoustical problems in the vehicle by applying unique FIR filters, using more than 500 points along the frequency spectrum per channel. This optimizes the sound reproduction to the specific vehicle listening environment with much greater precision than has been achieved up until now using typical graphic or parametric equalization. The result is a more accurate, dimensional soundstage, and smoother, more natural sound optimized to match your vehicle.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear 4-volt preamp outputs, the CDA-9887 has a dedicated 4-volt subwoofer preamp output with variable level adjustment of 0 to 15. You can also reverse the phase of the subwoofer output level from 0-degrees or 180-degrees as well as select a mono or stereo output.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine CDA-9887 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

HD Radio Ready: The CDA-9887 can receive HD Radio signals, including multicast broadcasts, when the TUA-T550HD HD Radio Tuner Module (500TUAT550, sold separately) is connected via the Ai-NET connector. The digital seek function allows you to search for only HD Radio stations if you prefer.

    Great head unit

Written By Anonymous, West Palm Beach, FL on Friday, November 02, 2012

I had a pioneer that played very good but put this in and blew me away. Quality is my biggest thing and this is my best so far. I had bass coming exactly where I wanted.
    Pros:
Looks good, perfect quality, can custom background (but not too much good options), sub outputs, sub level control
    Cons:
    none so far

    Excellent

Excellent Unit, love the blue, set up is easy, the only issue I have is with the ipod features, it takes forever to fast forward through songs on the ipod compared to a cd (ipod touch 4th gen) and also the cable that connects from the unit to the ipod goes bad, the end that plugs into the actual ipod broke after several months. Other then that no problems. Definitely support buying this unit for any vehicle if you have the system in the vehicle that is good enough for it

    Hmm..

Written By Tyler, Grand Rapids, MI on Tuesday, December 21, 2010

Absolutely beautiful headunit. I was sceptical coming from an Eclipse CD7000. The CD7000 was an awesome headunit. Between the two though my favorite is the 9887. The CD7000 has a more clear and natural tone to the speakers where as the Alpine 9887 adds a little coloration and sounds warmer (I prefer this). The one thing I dislike about the 9887 is the time alignment. You can only get approximations within the headunit where as with the Eclipse CD7000 you could get spot on down to the millisecond. Another thing with the 9887 is with the active EQ you can only get within 4 bands of the next EQ option. In order to compensate for this you have to adjust the Q and slopes so they dont roll off as fast to cover the gaps between bands.

Other than that I use this HU with the KCE 422i and my 8Gb iPod Touch, KTP 445 power pack, and I run an Eclipse XA5000 5 channel amp, pair of ID8D2V3's, and a set of Eclipse SC6500's up front and no rear fill. As soon as I have an opportunity Ill be going active and Ill put the 9887 to the test. I have the KTX 100EQ sitting in a box on standby.

    Very Good

Written By nurseman, Lexington, KY on Monday, June 14, 2010

Purchased this for my mom on Mothers Day. Installed it myself....extremely easy. Synced it all up and she loves this thing. She is old school...won't use a computer for anything, thinks checks are the way to go, electronics freak her out and I was looking for something simple for her to use as she is on the road a lot. She commented on how great the sound is now. So if it is easy enough for her to use it passes the test. She likes just being able to push the button for true hands free calling. I am thinking about getting the same one for my dad as well and possibly me.

I Just hooked up the Alpine 9887 today and it is fantastic! I will admit, I have been out of the car stereo game for a few years while my music & money focus had turned to home theater, but honestly if any one said this head unit wasnt top notch in sound quality, design and tweekability they're crazy.

Running it to two12s, Fosgate 200 dsm, Alpine 75wx4, Sony 6x9s, 6 1/2" & tweets. In addition an audio control xover, and packed in a 71 Camaro. It rocks with clarity!

    I have no problems

I have to admit, the IPOD is slow when changing songs, but this is my first deck with IPOD accessories. Thats what CD's are for. I still use both. This deck has all the options and my favorite is the Night Light Illumintion which I have programmed to turn off after 5 seconds. Nice when driving at night. The light can be annoying. This is more of an adult unit. You need to know what your are gonna listen to before you start driving down the road. Otherwise you will get into a wreck. You will also have to purchase the programmer for this deck. Do your homework on this unit.

    I hate this radio

Written By christopher, Glenwood NJ on Friday, February 19, 2010

I've been stuck with this radio for about a year and I can't wait to get rid of it in March when the Kenwood KDC-X994 comes out. Sound quality is fine but the unit was designed horribly you can't read the clock unless you're within 6 inches of the display (which makes driving kind of hard). If you turn the knob too fast it stops working so it takes forever to find a song by track is you're using a large Ipod. Quick search is useless unless you remember what number out of 10,000 your song is. The Sirius adapter is nice but you have to wire it acc. or it will hang up on you about every 3 days. The blue tooth device sounds like a echo chamber and gives you background noise threw the Ipod. Overall I am very disappointed with Alpine. I used to work for an Alpine dealer so I know how their products used to be. What's going on Alpine?

    Alpine CDA-9887

I wanted a high end receiver that was very user friendly and controlled my ipod from the dash controls. This unit fills the bill and brings in the weaker FM
    stations as well.

    Alpine CDA-9887

Written By Mark, Woodbury, MN on Saturday, September 12, 2009
Installed in a 2001 Subaru Forester
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    First, the pros -

Features very well laid out, easy to use while driving
Menu is deep and complex, but intuitive - you get used to it very quickly
Looks fantastic. Very pretty, nicely designed unit all around; somebody put
a lot of thought into the design

    But....

    It sounds awful for an HU at this price point. "Imprint" feature is useless;
first, it badly overprocesses the sound - "smooths" the life right out of it. I
know what my CDs are supposed to sound like. In the Alpine, I was
shocked at how much just wasn't there; music was flat and lifeless. Second,
Imprint centers the sound, so it sounds like every instrument is coming out
of the middle of the dashboard. Some people like that, but I don't know
why - I want soundstage; I want it to sound like I'm surrounded by the
    music.

If you turn off Imprint, you get the soundstage back, and it restores the life
and the richness to the music... but, now it sounds bad because you can't
really tweak the sound if Imprint is turned off. Distorts badly even at mid-
    volume.

Also, radio reception is very weak, especially AM. Sometimes my favorite
local AM station wouldn't even come in, less than 20 miles from the tower.
Swapped the Alpine for a Pioneer DEH-800PRS, and that HU picked up the
same AM station from over 250 miles, in the daytime, in the mountains.

Wouldn't recommend this to anyone. If you can go another $150, get the
Pioneer - light years ahead of the Alpine in sound quality; more than worth
    the money.

    awsome head unit.

Written By Seth, Upstate NY on Monday, August 10, 2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first Alpine purchase. I like this unit so much that intend to finish out the rest of my system all Alpine (from Crutchfield). I've had this installed for about a month and I'm in love with it. The tuning options are everything I would expect for the price and then some. And then if you want you can add more with "imprint".

All I can say is that you do get what you pay for and this head unit is worth it hands down. Also the trim ring and wiring harness kits that came with it worked out perfectly. Couldn't be happier.

    Outstanding HU

Written By James, Omaha, NE on Friday, July 03, 2009
    Installed in a 2004 Nissan 350Z
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this is a great head unit.

    PROS-
    - Ability to change colors was underrated before I purchased.
    - Unit "feels" very well built and everything is easy to navigate(although I've owned Alpines previously.)
    - Ipod integration is great.
    - Unit sounds incredible with Imprint. I haven't played with it too much without Imprint since I had that installed right off the bat, but it definately sounds alot better with it. I HIGHLY reccomend Imprint. My 350z has a terrible soundstage and with the Imprint tune, it sounds glorious. On that note I will reccomend Boston Acoustics SX60 components. I have them powered by a 90x2 Fosgate amp so I can't speak on the internal amp of the HU.
    - Looks great, better than I expected.
    -Crutchfield service and reliability

    CONS
    - No motorized faceplate althought don't think I'll be changing CDs too much anymore
    - When playing music via Ipod the HU controls aren't as seamless as an ipod by itself. For exmample, if I'm listening to a track of a specific artist and I hit the equivalent of the "menu" button on an ipod, it won't take you back into that album or artist, it takes you all the way back to the beginning which is quite annoying and dangerous while driving. Not sure if this is something all HUs do or not.
    - Screen washes out somewhat in sunlight but I really don't know how it could get much better.

Overall great HU, wish I had more than 1500 characters

    Alpine CDA-9887

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great head unit....but dated. Still the top of Alpine's line (no nav cd players) it hasn't been updated with usb playback or aux line in input. Which is sad since its lower models such as the cd-105 have both of these features built into the faceplate. Just know before you buy that these features aren't built in. The only real perk is IMPRINT and 3 rca outs. But...other than that I would have gone with another radio but I'm an alpine head unit guy so I got this one.

As always, crutchfield service and support is great. Thanks JP at customer service.

    Great head unit

Written By Jacob, Wisconsin on Friday, May 01, 2009

I bought this head unit to start building a new system in my car. For those of you who are complaining that this requires something extra to run Imprint, do some research before you buy. Seriously. On that note, the Imprint technology is why I chose this head unit. You can buy the kit to calibrate your sound from Crutchfield. It's worth it.

Awesome head unit, great sound quality. Somewhat expensive, but you get what you pay for.

    Ok Head Unit

Written By Michael, Illinois on Friday, March 27, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am pleased with the head unit, installed just as it should. The sound is not as crisp as I had thought it would be, but it is acceptable for now. The only way to adjust the parameters is to use the equalizer, which is fairly easy, however, I haven't noticed much improvement in sound quality. To unlock bass and treble controls, you must purchase the 'Imprint' device, which is expensive. I have yet to run the Imprint program, but I have heard good things about the features it unlocks. This unit isn't at all like my old Panasonic 8305, which was a tremendous head unit, but time will tell how long I will keep this Alpine head unit after the Imprint upgrade.

    Discontinued USB Support?

Written By Richard, Long Island, NY on Friday, February 27, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 9887 is Alpine's top-of-the line head unit audio-wise (having Burr-Brown D/A converters). I'm very happy with my Imprint results...the audio is phenominal...truly.

However, the KCA-620M USB support add-on was discontinued 3 years ago. Crutchfield sold this to me last week but never told me about its limitations: no shuffle support for USB drives when they told me it had this capability. If you go to Crutchfield's features & specs page, you will see that a USB input is optional for this radio when in fact, it hasn't been for 3 years.

On top of that, Alpine never developed a replacement USB module for the 9887...they just discontinued support. Thus, if you want cutting-edge USB support with Alpine, you must step down to a head unit that has inferior sound quality or buy an iPOD (which I don't need or want since syncing my thumbdrive with Windows Media Player 10 is all I need).

This is very disappointing for me. Alpine support has escalated my call to senior management to determine a course of action. However, Crutchfield and/or Alpine better throw an iPOD my way since this will be the only way I can get random shuffle mode of my 1500+ .MP3 collection after spending $1300 in Alpine equipment.

[Editor's Note: We apologize for the frustrations you have experienced, and our Customer Support Department will continue to work with you on this. We have corrected our web presentation to avoid this problem in the future.]

Bought this deck as a replacement for my Eclipse7100 that was stolen, What a mistake had way better sound quality with the 7100. You have to buy separate stuff for IMPRINT what a joke I could do that without buying anything xtra with my 7100. Save your money and look into a Eclipse deck!!

    Excellent

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit is fast. Unlike other receivers, some intelligence was put into the menu design. For the most part, everything is where it should be. Remote is FAST.
You can also easily control time delay and crossover presets directly from the remote. You can't push down on the volume/selector knob to make a
selection. you must push the play/pause button instead (annoying). I can't comment on IMPRINT (KTX-100EQ), I haven't gotten it from Crutchfield
yet; but, bass and treble can't be unlocked without it. You must use the EQ instead (annoying). I bought the unit to use with my IPOD Classic 120. It
has a little over 9000 songs. Despite what some say, connection is FAST. I can navigate to a specific artist, album, song *almost* as fast as using the
IPOD itself. I can *drill down* from Artist-Album-Song or Genre-Artist... or Playlist, etc. Just like on the actual IPOD. KCE-422i cable charges the IPOD.
When you turn your vehicle off, the IPOD pauses and turns off after a minute or two. When you turn the vehicle back on, the IPOD wakes up and
continues where it left off. Also, if you disconnect the IPOD and attach headphones, it still continues where it left off. You can *hotplug* it back into the receiver and it will continue playing. Songs start playing fast. Be sure to make use of playlists. Completely seamless while using the IPOD.
Couldn't have asked for more. If you are thinking about getting the 9886 like I almost did, DON'T! Get this instead.

You CANNOT beat this deck. It is the BEST head-unit out there as far as
sound quality goes. UNTOUCHABLE! When you have your system
completed, look into tuning it with the IMPRINT tuning module, it makes
your music sound like it's coming out of the windsheild!
