Alpine

Our take on the Alpine PKG-RSE2

by Dominic Devito
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's PKG-RSE2 overhead DVD player/LCD monitor makes it easy to entertain the kids or other rear-seat passengers while on long road trips. Its crisp 10.2" widescreen LCD display delivers stunning picture clarity and high brightness for better daylight viewing. You can watch your DVDs in Normal play mode, if you want, or skip straight to the menu, or better yet, skip everything and just play the movie.

You can send the audio through your car's stereo system with the built-in FM modulator, or connect it to your stereo's auxiliary input. A rear passenger can also listen privately with included wireless headphones, while you enjoy music through the car's stereo system. An additional pause/play button placed towards the driver's seat lets you quickly stop and start the movie action so you can get your passengers' attention.

The PKG-RSE2 includes a dedicated video game console connector for head-to-head fun on the road, or use the additional auxiliary input for connection from another video source. The included full-function wireless remote gives you control over nearly any Alpine device in your car.

Highlights:

  • 10.2" (16:9 widescreen) overhead, fold-down video monitor with built-in DVD player
  • plays DVDs, DVD-Rs/RWs, video CDs, CDs, and CD-Rs/RWs
  • wireless headphone transmitter
  • one set of wireless headphones
  • FM modulator (16 selectable frequencies)
  • wireless remote control
  • built-in dome lights

    Features
    Remote Control
    Connections and Controls

    Features

LCD Monitor: The PKG-RSE2 has a 10.2" widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) TFT (Thin Film Transistor) active matrix color LCD with 1.152 million pixels. Backlighting is supplied by a cold cathode fluorescent lamp.

DVD Player: The built-in DVD player loads from the front (the face toward the rear of the vehicle). Along with the transport keys on the remote and the front of the unit, a play/pause button behind the LCD is easily accessed from the front seat when you need the rear passengers' attention. Along with all the standard DVD controls, there are three play modes:

    • Normal: see previews and manually start movie from the menu
    • Auto: playback starts after the menu has displayed for six seconds
    • Skip: previews and menu are skipped, playback begins immediately

Auxiliary Inputs: In addition to the DVD player, there are three auxiliary inputs. The wires for aux-1 and aux-2 are on harnesses and can be hidden behind the headliner. The game port input is covered by a flip-down panel and is typically used for temporary connection of a game or camcorder.

Disc Compatibility: The built-in DVD player is compatible with:

    • DVD Video: pre-recorded
    • DVD-R/RW: video mode only
    • Video CD: 12cm and 8cm
    • CD: pre-recorded, 12cm and 8cm
    • CD-R/RW: recorded on audio only components

Visual EQ: There are four video EQ presets; Night Movie (for movies with many dark scenes), Soft, Sharp, and High Contrast. You can also turn the video EQ off.

Picture Adjustment: You can also manually adjust the brightness, color, tint, contrast, and sharpness.

Wireless Headphones: The infrared transmitter broadcasts the audio signal to the included headphones when the monitor is playing. Additional SHS-N103 wireless headphones are available as an option (item number 500SHSN103, sold separately). The transmitter and headphones have two channels, to avoid any interference. The IR output can also be turned off if you prefer.

Easy System Expansion: Dual A/V inputs allow two sources to be connected to this monitor. You can switch between the two sources and the built-in DVD player using the supplied remote control. The audio output allows the signal to be integrated with the vehicle's stereo system through an auxiliary input.

Dome Lights: The built-in LED dome lights have a three position switch; on, off, and door (turns on with the rest of the interior lights when a door is open).

FM Modulator: The built-in FM modulator's frequency is selectable between 88.1 MHz and 92.1 MHz, in 0.2 MHz steps.

    Remote Control

Remote: In addition to controlling the monitor and DVD player, the included RUE-4159 universal wireless remote can also control certain other components (head unit, TV tuner, etc).

    Connections and Controls

    Aux-In 1: The 10" aux-1 harness consists of:

    • Composite: RCA composite video input
    • S-Video: S-Video input
    • Audio: stereo RCA inputs
    • Remote In: trigger the PKG-RSE2 from the head unit
    • Remote Out: trigger the aux-1 device
    • Power Remote: supply accessory power to the source unit (300 mA max)

    Aux-In 2: The 10" aux-2 harness consists of:

    • Composite: RCA composite video input
    • Audio: stereo RCA inputs
    • Remote Out: trigger the aux-2 device

Aux-Out: The auxiliary audio output is also on the aux-in 2 harness:

    • Audio: stereo RCA outputs

Power: The 4-pin power harness includes constant power, accessory power, ground, and the door trigger (for the dome lights).

Game Port: There is a game port input under a flip-down door on the back of the housing (the side closest to the front of the vehicle) with composite video and RCA audio jacks. When both the game port and aux-2 inputs are used, the game port takes priority.

FYI- IT WONT PLAY ALL DISCS

Written By Joe, DALLAS, TX on Wednesday, June 20, 2012

This unit wont play all types of discs. BE WARE, if you have DVD+R movies, this thing wont play them. SAD since all you find now in stores are DVD+Rs, you wont find DVD-Rs that are DL, only 4.7gb, so any backups you may have on DVD+R DL or DVD+R, this thing will spit it out right back at you. It wont play. No software update, nothing is available from Alpine. It might be a nice player but very limited. You have been warned.
    Pros:
    Kids love it.
    Cons:
I hate its limited playback capabilities.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My husband (first timer) installed this unit in a 04 Tahoe. The only problems we encountered were the screws. There was no cutting of the interior as we just went through the interior lights. It mounted like a dream we fumbled a little bit with alignment of the unit, seeing as how we did not cut the liner, but with some long screws it was flawless. Unfortunately, we had to return it because the car was traded for a 2012 Tahoe that came with a factory model that was inferior to this. The upgrade was done as a surprise for my parents and they wanted no adjustments made to the new vehicle even though this unit was FAR superior.(old people have no respect for advanced technology : ) so the only option was a return. A bit let down because this DVD blows this the factory model out of the water.
    Pros:
    beautiful picture,sound,features
    Cons:
screws cannot be used to mount this player

Better Looking/Performing than some Factory Units

Written By Peter, Demarest, NJ on Saturday, February 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the first rear entertainment system I've ever purchased, let alone, install it myself. First the speaker upgrade, then the Dynamats all around, then finally, the Rear Entertainment for my children, and I'm one of them! I really did a lot of shopping / researching and finally, decided to go with the Alpine unit, but most importantly, from Crutchfield. I wasn't about to take a gamble with $500 plus electronic item that I'd get shady support where there's a problem.

Now onto the unit itself. Let's first talk about the installation. It was relatively easy because I've dropped the headliner prior and pre-ran all wires, including the direct battery (+), switched +12V, negative door trigger, and the AUX out / video/audio-in. But when I got to the part where I had to mount the units, the 4mm machine screws were too short.. way too short. Alpine, please start including slightly longer mounting screws. Several trips to True Value solved that problem in a jiffy however.

Now for the quality: it's impeccable. Not only it was double boxed from Crutchfield which I expected no less, but the unit itself is meticulously put together. Although I've read some reviews on Amazon buyers that there was issue with audio, I found none! This is why I did not go gray market.. simply did not wanted to take that chance. I was also impressed with the audio quality of the infrared headsets.

Now for the picture: sharp and vibrant. Best LCD I've seen in a mobile setup.
    Pros:
High-quality craftsmanship, audio fidelity, picture quality
    Cons:
    Short mounting screws

    Works great in Subaru Tribeca

Written By pdecrette, Steamboat Springs, CO on Tuesday, November 30, 2010

I installed this in my 2009 Subaru Tribeca before an 18 hour trip with a one-year old and a three-year old. It helped! The installation was fairly straightforward and is 100% reversible in this vehicle. The quality of the player seems great. No problems at all.

    Great value

Written By Smitty, Florida on Saturday, August 07, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Pros:
    Great build quality (headphones too).
    Looks and sounds great.
    Very thorough manual.

    Cons:
    Only comes in one color.

After alot of research and I went to many retail store and saw many units with questionable build quality. I never found this unit anywhere but came back to it due to specs and the Alpine name. In over 20 years shopping with Crutchfield I knew I would be taken care of if I didn't like it. It has worked great and keeps the kids quiet. The lights can be set to function with the factory illumination. When the vehicle is turned off the player continues where it left off when the vehicle is restarted. Screen is bright enough to be seen in daylight and doesn't have the glare problems that headrest units have. Video game hookup for long trips is no problem. The pause button mounted in front is a nice touch. It really gets the kids attention quick.

Excellent product, but in a tough environment...

Written By Arthur, Dededo, Guam (South Pacific) on Sunday, January 24, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I actually purchased the first Alpine and had it installed in MI. Everything worked as advertised, but the monitor screen quit working after a tough (HOT, HUMID) 2.5 years in Guam. Keep in mind that the climate here is 80-90 degrees farenheit with 80% humidity year-round. I highly recommend the product, but it's durability is a bit suspect. Buy the extended warranty as I did with this one. I think it will be a good investment if you're in a harsh (very hot, or very cold) environment.

Probably the best overhead DVD player in the market

Written By torres, Greenville, SC on Monday, November 09, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my children so they can be entertained on long trips. Installation was challenging and like the other reviewers, the installation screws were too short (hence 4 stars). Aside from the challenge of install, I'm certain that this is the best product of its kind. The picture quality is simply amazing and the workmanship is solid. The only operational issue is that the sound coming from the FM modulator to my stereo system was "fuzzy". However, this could be due to my vehicle. Also, Alpine provides a hardwire connection cable from the DVD unit to the FM antenna connector on the back of the stereo.

As to Crutchfield's service, I have been a customer for 21 years! The overall value Crutchfield provides is the reason I've been with them this long.

    GREAT PICTURE!

Written By Jeffery, TUCSON, AZ on Sunday, April 19, 2009

BOUGHT THIS FOR MY WIFE'S NEW MINI VAN, IT IS A GREAT ADDITION AT A FRACTION OF THE OEM COST. VERY SIMPLE WIRING AND ALTHOUGH WE HAVE A MOONROOF THAT RETRACTS TO THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE I HAD NO PROBLEMS. I HAVE INSTALLED SEVERAL PIECES OF CAR STEREO EQUIPMENT IN MY LIFETIME AND THIS WAS A BIT OF A CHALLENGE. DEFINITELY NOT A DO IT YOURSELF JOB IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH IT. HAD TO USE DIFFERENT MOUNTING SCREWS BECAUSE THE ONES THAT ARE INCLUDED ARE VERY SHORT BUT THAT IS THE ONLY CON. GREAT PICTURE!

    Great purchase

Written By Lewis, High Springs, FL on Wednesday, February 04, 2009

Installed in a 2008 Mazda 5 mini van. Was a pain to install, especially
outside in the FL sun. It has been worth every cent. My daughters have
enjoyed it almost everyday. When we travel they pick out several movies
and never get bored. They also read alot, but when they are tired of
reading they have something to do. The only problem/complaint I have is
that the screen blocks part of my rearview mirror view. The headphones
work great as does the thru speaker connection. The radio does lose a little
reception but it is worth it! When the daughters have friends everyone can
    listen.
Crutchfields service is always great, but the instructions for the "5" were
not. I guess it's hard to have info on everything.

    Very Nice DVD Player

Written By Jonathan, Dayton, OH on Tuesday, January 27, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good price on a very nice DVD player. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who was able to install this for me and my kids love it. Additionally, the wiring was available so that the buttons light up when the car is on and there are additional lights that come on only when the interior car lights come on (switched on or door opened).

I drove 26 hours over christmas with my wife and two children...the children were quiet all the way.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I know this is an expensive unit, but the quality is untouchable. I had a local shop install it, so I can't comment on the install process. They charged $200, but did a very proffesional job. The quality of the picture is jaw dropping. The LED dome lights on the sides look really cool as well. I'm very happy with this purchase. I would highly recommend this DVD player.

    Great video system for E350

Written By Jon, El Cajon, CA on Wednesday, October 01, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a very straightforward install, and the product has plenty to offer. There are more input/output cables than I'll ever use, so this unit has lots of options for use. The mounting plate was easy to attach to an existing rib in the roof of the van, and to properly secure it with at least 4 screws, I needed to epoxy some wood blocks to the roof sheet metal to create additional points of contact. After carefully cutting and measuring the headliner, the installation is very clean and simple. The view from all three benches is clear and bright, and the wireless headphones have good sound and reception even in the back. When the screen is down, it doesn't obstruct the drivers view in any direction. I used the FM adapter and a hard wired plug to the AUX Input on the stereo, and both sound just fine. We're looking forward to enjoying this on our next road trip

    Alpine PKG-RSE2 installed in a 2007 F-150 SC

Written By Pmason, NYC/NC on Monday, June 23, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this overhead monitor in my 2007 Super Crew F-150 with the overhead rails. I will not tell you that he installation was a breeze but it wasnt difficult either. I didnt use the FM modulator for audio so I cant comment on the quality of the sound being connected that way. I connected the audio straight to my Pioneer Z2 headunit. Im happy with my decision. The screen can be seen from the side (no need to tilting) which its not capable of doing anyway. Sound from the headphones are great and an extra pair only cost $19.99. The clarity of the picture is amazing. A lot of my friends thought that I had an HDTV installed in the truck. Also I didnt connect the dome lights simply b/c I have a truck with 2 ights in the front and 2 in the rear, so I dont need them in the middle. Keep in mind that you will need audio and video cables to complete you installation.

Pros: Un-beleiveable picture, wireless headhones, mom button for easy pausing (if you have kids) built-in dome lights, remote control.

Cons: Short mounting screws (longer ones can be purchased from a hardware store if needed).

    GREAT FOR PARENTS

Written By Victor, Rio Grande City, TX on Monday, June 23, 2008

Alpine works great had it installed and paired it with the sirius backseat system. Picture is sharp, colorful, great price and great quality. Although commercials are very digitized, the shows and cartoons are great looking on the screen. Design is sleek. There is a great feature which is not identified clearly, but as a parent its great. A pause/play button at the back of the unit which is easily accessible from the drivers chair which is great for parents. All in all a great purchase.

Alpine's PKG-RSE2 in a HHR! It can be done...

Written By philip, Ventura, CA on Monday, May 26, 2008

This was installed in a 08 SS HHR. I opted for this instead of headrest because of the Alpine name and I didn't want to tear up my custom headrests. As usual, Alpine's quality is perfect, sound is awesome though the FM modulator, and the size is great with no obstructive view for even this little car. I can still use the rearview mirror! The screen is viewable from all angles in the rear and no more sun glares which the kids always complained about on headrest models. The remote is a little complicated for kids but they'll learn it soon enough.

Right now it is being used with the factory headunit but when I upgrade to a A/V Headunit, video options are plentiful. The install went rather well but definitely not for a beginner installer. Depending on your cars options you may have to watch for side airbag sensors and other various things during the install. I'm just your average "Joe" and the install took me over 6 hours.

    A very highly recommended unit!

    Alpine PKG-RSE2

Written By Lewis, High Springs, FL on Monday, May 05, 2008

I installed this in a 2008 Mazda 5. Other than locating a good source for constant 12v, the install went smoothly. Dropping the headliner and getting everything lined up properly went great until it was time to install the unit itself. The supplied screws were too short and would not reach through the headliner to the reinforcement plate, Alpine should offer several different size screws. A quick trip to the local hardware solved my problem.

I only ran aux cables to the floor from one of the two aux inputs and did not need the ouput video, but it was nice to have so many options. The unit worked perfectly (thankfully!) once the power was connected. I adjusted the FM mopdulator on screen for a channel not used in my area and was able to get an excellent signal through the radio. Now, if we have more than two viewers (I purchased an extra set of headphones), everyone in the car can get audio. My children love the location and no longer complain about the sun preventing them from seeing a picture. Our previous models were not in the ceiling.

Mounting one of these is easy if you are familiar with how to disassemble an automobile (I am. I was a technician for 14 years) or replace a headliner, but I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner.
