Our take on the JVC KD-PDR80

You listen to your MP3 player and hard drives more than CDs, so why limit yourself in the car? JVC's KD-PDR80 CD receiver has the tools you need to enjoy all your music in the car.

The face of the receiver offers two portals to versatility. You can connect hard drives, thumb drives, or MP3 players to the front-panel USB input, while the front-panel auxiliary input next to it accommodates other audio sources. And the KD-PDR80 sports built-in iPod® controls that let you listen to and control your iPod nano or video right from the receiver. You can add optional adapters to enjoy satellite radio reception or add Bluetooth® capability.

Take in music and system information at a glance with two lines of text on the bright display. The driver-friendly controls and large control knob make it easy to adjust your system while you concentrate on your driving. Under the surface, the high-quality digital-to-analog converter delivers all the sonic details to the built-in amplifier, so you hear natural, lifelike sound with plenty of impact. The 3-band parametric equalizer gives you expanded control over your bass, midrange, and treble.

The two sets of preamp outputs let you ramp up the power with external amps and subwoofers. JVC includes a wireless remote so your passengers can get it on the fun.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Amplifier: The JVC CD player features a CEA-2006 compliant MOS-FET 20 Watts RMX x 4-channel amplifier in 4ohms at 1% THD+N with an 80 dBA signal-to-noise-ratio.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-PDR80 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 200 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can set the clock, choose the time zone and daylight saving time, select the dimmer mode, select the external component type (changer or line input), turn on/off ID3 Tag display, switch between US standard and European tuning spacing, set the Amplifier Gain control (high/low), and several other operational settings.

Intelligent Equalizer (i-EQ): The KD-PDR80 has a 3-band parametric EQ with manually adjustable low (60 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz, or 120 Hz), midrange (500 Hz, 1 kHz, 1.5 kHz or 2.5 kHz), and high frequency (7.5 kHz, 10 kHz, 12.5 kHz, or 15 kHz) settings and bandwidth settings (0.5Q, 0.75Q, 1.0Q, 1.25Q, 1.5Q, or 2.0Q). The settings for each EQ band varies from -12 to +12 dB. In addition, this unit also has six selectable preset sound mode combinations. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in one of three user memories. The preset Intelligent EQ modes are:

In addition, AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. Many HD Radio stations also offer more than one channel of programming. This service is called multicasting. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit www.hdradio.com. When this optional HD Radio tuner box is connected to the KD-PDR80, you will still be able to receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Satellite Radio: This unit supports both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio when used with an optional satellite radio tuner and adapter, sold separately. This JVC headunit supports the SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle tuner and JVC KS-SRA100 Sirius Satellite Radio interface (item number 700SIRJVC1, sold separately). The headunit also supports the XMDirect2 Universal Vehicle tuner and CNPJVC1 XM Satellite Radio interface (item number 700XMJVC1, sold separately).

Changer Controls: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

okay

Written By Sal, palmdale,ca on Monday, June 15, 2009

It doesnt get to many stations in palmdale and where it does they dont last to long before running out of signal but the quality is much better compared to regular analog stations.

It gets lots of stations in simi valley ca and its good.

One thing though is that I lost the ability to save my stations onto my presets.

I think everything was connected correctly but ill check it again.

Excellent for Honda Del Sol

Written By James DS, Albuquerque, NM on Friday, December 19, 2008

Successfully installed this receiver into my 1995 Honda Del Sol. The fit is
absolutely excellent. I was initially concerned that my car's radio receiver
cover would not be capable of closing with this radio, but the clearance is
not a problem at all; even with the flip-down face. Sound is so excellent
that I decided to keep my car's oem speakers. Ipod control works very well.
The front USB port is a bonus. User interface is intuitive. I absolutely love
this receiver's lightning-fast ability to seek radio stations. Peripherals (e.g.
Bluetooth and HDRadio) are cheaper than other brands and get excellent
reviews. Plethora of LCD screen colors allow for nice customization. Nice
LCD screen negating feature for night driving. The receiver's power
antenna lead (blue wire) was useful for my antenna's integrated signal
amplifier.

DO NOT GO INTO SHOCK!

Written By RichieBABY, BRUNSWICK, GA on Wednesday, December 10, 2008

As a ex New Yorker, I am advising all that may still live there, to your SHOCK, when you get your JVC through Crutchfield, THE SERIAL NUMBER IS INTACT! More shocking, the box is FACTORY SEALED. Forgive me, but Crutchfield would be a giant FLOP in Manhattan. If I recall, the last time I saw a factory sealed unit bought in Manhattan was my fathers Black and White set he bought in 1950.

Once I regained my composure of seeing this factory fresh unit, I went about the installation, which was a snap. It replaced a JVC unit, which did not have CD Changer capability. Along with the receiver, I also bought a FACTORY SEALED JVC CD changer from Crutchfield. LOVE the cosmetics of the unit. Sound is as always, TOP NOTCH. Sad for me to say, while not the fault of Crutchfield, the instruction book was written and printed in Manhattan. The expression, CRYSTAL CLEAR, used in the movie A Few Good Men, DOES NOT APPLY HERE. Granted, I conceed it may of been perfectly clear to the one wrote it, and if my Google search is successful, perhaps he can explain it to me.

Great receiver!

Written By Jim, Raleigh, nc on Thursday, October 09, 2008

Installed the receiver about two weeks ago, and really like it. Love the front USB port, and the ability to quickly grab an MP3 from the web, toss it on a flash drive, and listen to it right off that drive.

JVC KD-PDR80

Written By Perry, Jax, FL on Friday, September 26, 2008

Radio was easy to install using the wiring adaptors and such. The menus can be trying to navigate but so far I am liking the unit. One thing I don't like is the volume knob also changes the input (tuner, cd, usb etc) and most of the time when I try to adjust the volume I end up changing the input, especially on a bumpy section of road. Need a seperate button to change the input or make it harder to push for that function to avoid accidenta and anoying changes. When playing a mp3 cd, the display shows the artist and album title but not the song title. Haven't tried the USB interface yet, and also plan to add the HD tuner in a few weeks. The EQ is not easy to adjust and some songs just don't sound right but that could partly be the stock speakers I am still using.

Above average head CD/FM unit

Written By Brian, Portland, OR on Thursday, September 18, 2008

Installed this unit about two weeks ago.

Likes:
good value.
adequate power output
nice easy to read display in most conditions
remote a nice touch, and I use it more than I thought I would
many rich features for a unit of this price

Dislikes:
TERRIBLE JVC owners manual.... poor instructions on how to use its features, which are many
Can't read display in direct sunlight
main single multi funtional control knob not "tall enough" to grab and adjust volume when driving... it you aren't careful enough, you wind up accidently changing from CD, to FM, to whatever..... irritating. Best to use the remote.
FM reception average, but more than likely its my antenna

JVC PDR-80 Rocks

Written By Jerry, Ohio on Thursday, March 27, 2008

Installed this HU in a 1997 Honda Odyssey, installed Eclipse speakers in
front doors and Infinitys in the rear doors. I read many reveiws concerning
IPOD friendly HUs before deciding on this one. I liked the idea of being able
to change the button colors determined by the input I was using. I am very
pleased with this purchase.

Now to the sound, this JVC really pumps out the sound, I have an IPOD
connected to the USB connector in the front and its operation is quite
simple and straight forward. I really have no need to be able to search
through all my collection, so I generally am very happy with the shuffle play
feature. If I don't particularly care for a song I just use the remote to fast
forward to the next selection.

The CD/MP3 player is great, the sound is awsome. The FM radio is also high
quality in my opinion. The EQ has several presets that to me are just fine,
however one can set the equalizer up to their own preference. The controls
took some getting used to but with just a little fooling around they became
intuitive to use.

I highly reccomend this unit for any IPOD owner, they will really appreciate
its functionality.

Oh yes and Crutchfields instructions were right on, took 2 days in shipment,
and approx. 45 min to install the HU. Another 20 min per door for the
speakers, the whole operation took approx. 2 Hrs.

Installed in 99 Jetta III

Written By Rob, MA on Friday, March 21, 2008

I am very happy with my purchase. Installation took less than 2 hours.
The wiring harness that Crutchfield supplied allowed me to do all the
soldering in my basement instead of under the dash. After the wiring
harness was done, it was a simple matter of inserting the sleeve, plugging
the ends of the harness in to the car and receiver, and inserting the
receiver. I spent most of the 2 hours soldering and taping the harnesses
together.

The Good:
The receiver works great, very clean at high sound levels with my premium
factory speakers. Set your station presets, and the receiver will scroll
through those selections only. The ability to change the display colors
minimizes that kaleidescope look I saw in most other systems in this price
range. The color change alone was worth the extra $30 over similar
systems. You can minimize the scroll and graphics on the display if you
hate the distraction. My daughter uses the remote control from the back
seat. Setting up the receiver was easy once I figured out the selection
interface.

The bad: (why not 5 stars)
The photo does not show the face plate very well, but the trim plate is
actually more of a gunmetal blue/grey, not black. The dial is surrounded by
a bright blue light that you can not change the color of. Searching through
songs on a USB drive is a drag. The receiver will put all your files into
folders based on artist, sub folders based on album, and then the files are
by song title using tag info instead of file name or title alone. My MP3's
tags are not all completely filled in, so the songs can end up anywhere. I
would prefer to just play and search by song title. There is no provision to
have the receiver play songs randomly so I will always hear 311 first, and
ZZ Top last. Because the search button works through each artist folder,
then each album, it takes me about a minute to search down to Metallica.
When all you want to hear is Whiskey in a Jar, a minute feels like a long
time.
If I found a receiver in this price range that had a better USB interface, I
would have selected a different receiver, but otherwise I would buy this
one again.
