The dash opening this kit is made for is a different shape and size than typical aftermarket car stereo receivers. The mounting bracket covers the "gaps" and secures your new receiver in the dash.

Clean, simple look.

Replaced the aftermarket dash pocket i had with this panel. It is simple and has a nice matte black finish. I much prefer the clean look of this piece to pocket that i didn't use.

Easy with washers

Written By Evan, Denton, TX on Saturday, October 01, 2011

Installing in a 91 Miata is fairly straightforward, however you will need some extra parts:

8 flat washers

2 #10 x 1-inch screws

When attaching to the dash use the two 1-inch screws, along with 3 washers per screw on the top mounting holes as spacers. Use 1 washer/spacer for the bottom holes. Not only will this bring the bracket flush with the radio surround, but it also averts the problem so many have of the bracket holes not being spaced far enough apart. The holes line up perfectly, as does the radio itself, so it's a very uncomplicated install. If the instructions had mentioned this, I might've given the product a higher rating.

Where's the pocket?

The dash kit fit O.K. but I was very disappointed that it didn't come with a little pocket in the empty space beneath the radio, like the one that came with the car. Now I have a big flat metal strip across the bottom - just like the picture.

Had Me Cussing! 1990 miata

Written By JohnR, Huntsville, AL on Sunday, May 29, 2011
Installed in a 1990 Mazda Miata
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought for my 1990 miata to install a kenwood kdc-108. As stated in other reviews, the alignment holes were too narrow to match the location studs on the frame. The srew holes are spaced incorrectly in the veritcal dimension as well. My solution was to clip the slots and alignment holes out leaving a dog ear looking piece on the top left and right. The bracket sits flush with the trim if everything is aligned "perfectly", however I gave up on perfect after 2 hours. mine is now flush on one side and slightly below the trim on the other. As stated in another review, the use of washers to shim it up fill allow the trim of the stereo to straddle both the bracket and the car trim. The sleeve is hard to fit into the bracket after the braket has been installed into the frame.

Some Drilling and Bending

Written By MikeM, Edmond, OK on Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

On a 90 Miata, I did have to drill out the small upper holes and expand the bottom
slotted holes to fit the existing pattern in the dash. But, this metal is nice and sturdy.

Need to flare out the sides a bit to fit the DIN sleeve. Also had to grind the left and
right flanges on the front sides of the Sony DIN sleeve. The Sony unit was light and
with the snug fit the final install feels solid.

Do Not Buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought a new stereo for my Mazda Miata. The stereo fit perfectly.

I do NOT recommend buying the Mazda Miata kit. The holes do not line up. Instead, I recommend getting the larger size cubbyhole, which fit perfectly with a 1 DIN stereo.

93 Miata

Written By LA, Henderson, Nevada on Friday, March 04, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was concerned about this product after reading the reviews. I asked my product advisor about it and he told me that out of hundreds of successful installations, it is likely that only a few did not fit correctly and these were the people who wrote a review. The product did not fit in two major ways. First the 4 screw holes did not align very well. Since the bracket is metal this was an easy fix. I just drilled out the bottom two mounting holes to be a little larger. Second, the bracket surface did not bring the the radio mounting surface flush to the dash trim plate. This may be difficult to explain in words, but when you go to mount the trim ring on your aftermarket radio, the trim ring will likely be wider than the opening in the dash trim piece. I got around this issue by spacing the mounting bracket with 3 flat washers under each of the 4 mounting screws. The 3 washers brought the face of the mounting plate flush with the dash trim piece. This allowed the radio trim plate to mount flush and overhang the trim panel. I hope this makes since. Another complaint with the bracket is that it did away with the pocket and blanked out the space below the radio. I recommend Crutchfield find an alternative to this unit. I realize the sales volume on this particular bracket is probably too low for them to hassle with.

Dosen't fit '97 Miata

Written By MarkP, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Installed in a 1997 Mazda Miata
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been buying from Crutchfield since early 1993 and this is the first time I've ever received something from them that didn't fit. Needless to say, if you have a '97 Mazda Miata, this won't fit properly. The holes do not line up correctly and have to be re-drilled. This is the easy part. The hard part comes when you try to put the dash back together and realize the design flaw. I found a better kit elsewhere and installed it without a problem. Please go with another option if you have a '97 Miata.

Not perfect, but pretty decent

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the MPSS stereo in my 96M Miata using this bracket. The screw holes didn't line up exactly, but 30 seconds with a Dremel fixed that.
Fabbed some brackets to mount the new receiver & everything fit together perfectly, no gaps around the edges of this bracket or around the radio; very professional looking installation.
Were it not for the misaligned screw holes this would have had 5 stars - I highly recommend this bracket (though I've not tried it in anything other than a 96M, so YMMV...)

Mazda In-dash Receiver Kit

Written By Michael, Franklin, ME on Saturday, June 26, 2010
Installed in a 1990 Mazda Miata
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Until now, I have been very happy with Crutchfield's installation guides, but Crutchfield should provide a disclaimer with this product! It does not fit properly. First you must cut off the plastic alignment tabs on the dash and then tweak (bend) the bracket so the screw holes line up. I installed an Alpine head unit and after I did the above modifications and connected all the wires, I attempted to put the dash back together. This too was frustrating as the main dash trim would not go over the head units DIN sleeve mount. I had to take it all apart again and I could either cut my dash, or modify the DIN sleeve. I opted to modify the DIN sleeve which I did by bending the ends outward. While I had it out I painted it black since I knew it would be exposed and the outer face ring (ALPINE part) would not be used. Overall the installation works but just looks unfinished and unprofessional. I wanted to return it but didn't feel like taking it all apart and struggling with yet another installation and being without a stereo for who knows how long! Disappointing.

Finish nice, but not dimensionally correct

Written By nlinesk8s, Cincinnati, OH on Monday, May 03, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The finish is nice, but as noted by other reviews, it's not dimensionally correct for a early 90's Miata. There are some alignment pins on the plastic Miata bezel that I broke before realizing that the kit has to be bent outwards some and a dremel tool used to properly align the holes (about 3mm off). You'd think someone would have noticed this by now and fixed the kits.

Good-But Required Some Work

Written By D.L., Arizona on Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Installed in a 1990 Mazda MX5
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, this mounting kit was acceptable. It was a heck of a lot better than the one the car audio store used to mount my last stereo! I used it to mount a JVC KD-AHD59. The fit was pretty good to my 1990 Miata, but inserting the stereo into the receiver kit was a bit tricky. I don't know if that's a problem with the stereo or the bracket. We ended up bending flat the metal flanges that point away from the DIN part of the stereo and it just barely fit into the mounting kit and console. The fit of my stereo into the DIN receiver and mounting bracket does push the stereo out from the console a bit. This can cause a bit of irritation when shifting. I have to be careful to hold my hand on the shifter just right so I don't accidentally push the buttons on the stereo. The color and texture are a very good match, especially considering this is a metal piece and the Miata console is plastic. The biggest downfall to this kit is losing the storage pocket under the stereo. After purchasing the stereo and receiving the free kit, I noticed that Crutchfield does sell a kit with a pocket, but don't know how good it is.

mounting bezel..

it looks great but it is not dimensionally correct and I ended up cracking my plastic bezel..... Too bad..The part is simply not fabricated correctly and it is necessary to use a dremel to "modify" the factory bezel...

Not Recommended

Written By Will, Cleveland, OH on Thursday, July 09, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this product to install with a JVC KDR600 receiver in my 1991 Miata and it was an interesting process. Taking the console bezel off and attempting to fit the two pieces together yielded less than favorably results (it did not fit), this was after I had drilled out one of the holes so that it would fit properly in the mounting bracket. Finally after getting everything completely installed there is a gap at the bottom of the unit and it looks less than desirable. I would not recommend this install kit to anyone. I am going to reinstall and try and use the factory mounting cage and factory "cubby."

Could do much better..

Written By Samuel, Middle Tennessee on Monday, January 26, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The look of the kit is alright. It matches the color of the dash pretty well and the finish is simliar in texture.

However, it didn't install without a hitch (or several in my case). The bracket itself had to be modfied. Then, the 'tombstone' bezel had to modified as well. Fortunetly, I know how to use a dremel and all that, so it was that hard to make it work. The other issue is that you lose the storage bin below the unit (or whatever you might have in place there).

Bottom line, to buy a kit for a specific purpose, then have to do some serious mod work to make it remotely fit is bogus. They could do a much better job fabricating this bracket. Next time, I'll fab one myself.

Very Pleased

Written By Jarret, San Francisco, CA on Thursday, October 02, 2008

Okay, it worked fine for me... better than fine. Yes, I needed to do some cutting and shapping of my head unit chasis in order to get it to fit in this and still allow the bezel to go over... but well worth it.

Not Worth

This is a piece of sheet metal with OK finish that does not fit bolt hole pattern or allow DIN cage to fit without bending bottom up and flaring bottom corners out. I'm pretty handy so this I know would not be acceptable for the inexperienced DYI's.

Good kit

For my 1990 Mazda Miata. This kit works pretty well. It looks nice and it's the same color as the rest of the dash. No gaps or anything. I had to cut two little spikes off the factory subdash, and bend this kit a just a little on the sides to get the receiver chassis to fit. Overall very nice piece, better than I was expecting.
