Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the Peripheral iPod® Adapter for Chrysler

by Zak Billmeier

Listen to your iPod® and keep it charged using your Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep factory stereo. Just connect Peripheral's iSCH73 interface to the back of your factory stereo via the included cable, then plug in your iPod and go. The interface lets you control the music with your radio buttons — even with your steering wheel controls if you have them.

If you prefer, you can use the iPod's Click Wheel instead of the radio buttons. You won't have to worry about sound quality in either case — the wired connection ensures the best possible fidelity from your music. The iPod interface will even charge your iPod while it's plugged in. This adapter kit works with all dockable iPods, including the iPhone®.

Peripheral also includes a stereo RCA auxiliary input adapter cable, so you can add another source like a Dock & Play satellite radio or another brand of MP3 player. Warranty: 1 year.

Note: If you haven't already, please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if the included adapter cables will work with your vehicle.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    2006 Dakota fail

Written By Scott, Lima, OH on Friday, August 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does not work on a 2006 Dakota with radio RAQ. That has factory satellite and alpine system with the sub. Product support from the manufacture. Told me they have heard of the problem and have done nothing to find the problem in previous issues.

    Good Product - New Work-Around

Written By TedC, Chicago on Monday, August 06, 2012
Installed in a 2006 Dodge Durango
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a similar product (different brand) for my GM Escalade and liked it so much I bought this one for my son's 2006 Durango. His Durango is equipped with SAT Radio, 6 Disc CD Changer, Navigation System and DVD player all factory installed. We installed the unit knowing we would be disabling the DVD player but it was worth the trade off as far as my son was concerned. After the initial installation the truck did not recognize the adapter and I was sure I had followed the directions perfectly. After speaking with the Crutchfield Tech guys they discovered the manufacturer had issued a new work-around that would allow you to use the DVD player and fix our problem as well. It involved splicing into the adpater wires with 2 RCA plugs but if you have any basic-basic skills in wiring it is a piece of cake. All works great and my son has tossed his FM Radio adapter in the trash next to mine. As always thanks to the Crutchfield Tech guys for being very helpful!!!
    Pros:
    Excellent sound quality.
    Cons:
If you have a DVD player along with a Navigation system you need to do the work around and buy a couple of RCA plugs with stripped ends.

I love this purchase!!! I had an fm transmitter before this iPod adapter.. And there is no comparison. It is great to control my iPhone songs with my steering wheel controls... It's great! The sound quality is so much better than my fm transmitter. I would highly recommend this product!

Great Product and Easy to Install!!!!!

Written By Chris R, Voorhees, NJ on Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Installed in a 2006 Jeep Commander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 06 Jeep Commander with a factory 6 disc cd radio (RAQ). It was super easy to install (w/crutchfield's guides). It only took about 30 minutes total. I am impressed with both the sound quality and the ability to use the steering wheel controls to control my iPhone, it even controls PANDORA radio a little bit. It is a good product and gives you plenty of cord to run the connector to anywhere you would want it in the front seating area. I am very excited now that I can use my iPhone and all its abilities in my Jeep since it has no AUX jack on the factory radio. If you can follow a few simple directions to take apart the dash and remove the radio (about 20 screws total), all that's left is unplugging and plugging in a few plugs. Its truly plug n play. Thanks Crutchfield, you guys are the best!!!
    Pros:
Plug N Play, Good Sound, Steering Wheel controls, Easy Install
    Cons:
This is my first day with it, I will update if I find any cons.

    Good aftermarket product

Written By Anonymous, Scottsdale, AZ on Saturday, June 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

PRO: This was pretty easy to install and functions exactly as described. I like that it has 2 inputs so I can connect my iPod or my phone for Pandora. If you needed to run the adapter wire under the floor mats to get to the center console I'm sure there would be plenty. I thought I read that I would have to disable my Dodge factory 6-disc changer in order for this to work, but the changer still works as do all the other features of the factory radio. CON: There are no display features so you won't see artist or track names on your radio, but the product description explains that so it was expected.

    does what it should

Written By Mike, Roswell, GA on Thursday, June 09, 2011

I would agree with most reviews here. There are some "gotchas" in functionality, but overall this was a good purchase. My 4 year old 07 Jeep GC is my first car in 20+ years that hasn't had a custom stereo installed right after purchase. The factory changer deck works great for MP3 CDs, but has some limitations and can basically freak out at times.

What I really needed was a way to use my stereo and iphone 4 to play the 6 gigs of music/comedy/books easily. This does the job. It will also play sound from any app, as it works as a speaker dock... so youtube streams, netflix, or whatever will come through.

Hint: Don't crank the gains, it will add noise.

Issue: Sometimes the iphone and deck get out of sync. I have to go through a weird dance of turning stuff off/on and change modes, until it works. happens rarely.

Final thoughts: Quick install, easy to use, not too expensive, does what it needs to. I could have gone cheaper via other merchants, but I appreciate Crutchfield's guides and long term support.

    easy to install

Written By Scot, Colorado on Tuesday, March 29, 2011
Installed in a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thirty minutes after the Fed-Ex man dropped off the package I was listening to my iPod in my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. All I had to do was pop off the radio panel, remove 4 screws holding the radio in, connect the wiring per the instructions, and route the cable down the right side and out under the right console panel. Very straight forward. I may reroute the cable later If I don't like it where it is over time. The cable is very long so there's plenty to enable routing it to the center console storage compartment.

The Crutchfield instructions were excellent as usual. The units instructions were very straight forward, no extraneous and useless information. The only discrepancy in the unit's instructions was that it said to put the stereo in VES mode to use the iPod and mine needs to be in DVD mode.

My only complaint is that it does not work when the car is off. The key has to be in the ACC position or on. I found this odd because the regular radio and CDs will play for 10 minutes, or until you open the door, after you shut the car off and remove the key. No such luck with the iPod. I liked that feature.

I put it at 4 stars because I can't speak to it's long term reliability and because it doesn't work with the key out. Other than that I'm thrilled with it and very happy it was such a drama free install.

    Awesome when it works.

Written By Thunderwear, Orange, CA on Monday, March 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received one of these back in September of 2010 and had to exchange the first one, because the left channel didn't work at all. Yes, I did turn up the gain on that channel (there are gain dials on this device for each channel). I also, did the "unplug it and plug it back in again to see if it resets" thing that support always tells you to try. Nothing worked, so Crutchfield sent me a new one. The new one worked great up until now (March 2011) and now I am losing the left channel again. I know it's this unit, because my left channel works fine when I am using my normal radio functions (i.e. FM, CD, etc.) Check out the review by "Brad"...he has the same problem....except I think this is a problem in the unit itself, not the wiring harness. I have a feeling that there are some quality control issues at the company that makes these things. Trying again today to solve the issue, but may have to attempt another exchange with Crutchfield....just hope they are good about that now that this thing is now six months old. If I would have know I would have had this many problems, I would have ordered a new stereo with an aux input/iPod input.

    Jeep Ipod Interface

Written By Ed, Concord , Northern California on Sunday, March 13, 2011
Installed in a 2007 Jeep Commander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I give this Product a 2. I had it installed locally. It took 2 hours for them to install it inside a 2007 Jeep Commander. I did some research and came across this Ipod interface and decided to have it installed. The pros is that its one of the few interface that is available for the REC navigation system and sounds better than a FM modulator. The Cons are that it only works when your vehicle is running and you only have 3 buttons to choose from. One button allows you to scroll to the next playlist but you can not scroll back. Meaning if your scolled to the 5th playlist you can't scroll back to number 2 playlist it has to be done manually using the Ipod. Next once you get to the last playlist and finished the last song it goes blank and you have to switch to CD and back to reset it. Then the unit goes into randon play and playing all the songs in your Ipod. You then have to reset it with the Ipod manually for the first playlist and pick which playlist you want. Kinda annoying but so far its the only one on the market that I have found. I'm still looking for a better unit but for now I deal with it. Also it does not matter which Ipod you use. I tried Ipod Classic, Nano, Iphone and get the same result. Hope this helps.

Works as described, but not perfect

Written By GS, Chicago IL on Tuesday, March 01, 2011
Installed in a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Chose this as a work around for a recently purchased 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Limited with factory nav REC radio unit. Simple plug and play as described. Go to
www.wkjeeps.com to find the most comprehensive radio, trim, and any parts removal
diagrams. This website is very helpful compared to what instruction diagrams are
included. Mounted my iPhone 30 pin connector up through the center console to the
bottom of the left hand cup holder =subtle and functional, can't even see it.

I dinged 1 star off because of the unit's software glitch or just plain poor design you
should be aware of when installing in a factory Jeep's nav radio: when you're listening to
your iPod under the VES setting and are about to park and turn off the key, your factory
radio will toggle instantly over from iPod to the FM radio, which is really annoying and
jarring. I hate this but decided to tolerate it vs. spending $1200 for a decent touch screen
nav head unit radio. Crutchfield says this is the design and there's nothing that can be
changed or adjusted to eliminate this. Would rather have the factory nav radio than
something to invite theft. So 4 stars for this Peripheral iPod adapter, which is more than
fair. I am impressed with Crutchfield's commitment to customer satisfaction and quality,
    which is worth mentioning. Thanks

    Peripheral iPod® Adapter for Chrysler

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product sounds great; when it works. One of the wires in the harness has a bad
connection. I've had the dash apart four times trying to find the culprit. I'll get it working,
button things up, the next little bump in the road and it goes dead. I would be much
happier with a Forty dollar FM modulator.

This was simple to install and works as advertised. The directions were clear and it was as simple as unplugging connectors then re-plugging them into the wiring harness that was provided. I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.1. I installed it in a 2006 PT Cruiser with the 6-disk CD changer radio.

    Excellent Sound

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ISCH73 was very simple to hook up. I've never messed with car stereos before so when the included instructions failed me, I made a phone call to Crutchfield and the tech guy explained everything to me in a language I understood and I was listening to my iPhone in under 40 minutes.

Unfortunately my car's controls only work for volume and track up and down. No track/artist/display shown on stock stereo's display. But I got the adapter to get the most out of my iPhone's sound compared to an FM modulator, which it blows away!

Couldn't be happier...unless AT&T improves my phone service.

If you're just looking to connect your ipod this is awesome. Although it says it comes with a 20' ipod cord, the cord it comes with is only 11'. (what's up with that) You can control your ipod with the radio controls but you can't see the text on the display of the radio. I only gave it 3 stars because I got it so I could also hook up my xm radio, as it says it has an aux input. It turns out the aux input is only red and white RCA jacks, not a 3.5mm jack like most mp3 players, satellite radios and whatnot. Pretty disappointed.

[Editor's Note: Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Chris. We have corrected our database to state that it comes with an 11' cable.]
