Why choose a pre-matched speaker system?

Looking for speakers that'll deliver thrilling, edge-of-your-seat surround sound? Choosing a pre-matched speaker system is one way to ensure seamless home theater performance. These systems are made up of speakers that share the same tonal characteristics — that means the sound will stay consistent as it moves from speaker to speaker around your room. Most pre-matched systems come with a subwoofer — a must-have for high-impact bass.

Our take on the Energy RC-Micro 5.1

by Chris Egner

The RC-Micro 5.1 is Energy's most compact speaker system to date, and it proves that smooth, expansive surround sound can come from tiny speakers. Each of the four matching satellites stands no taller than a soda can, and the subwoofer takes up only about a cubic foot of space.

Smooth sound throughout the room
Energy speakers excel at delivering flat frequency response, for even, accurate sound. The tweeters are placed as close to the woofers as possible, helping to blend high and mid-range frequencies. The overall result is sound that's uniformly dispersed throughout your room.

Impressive bass impact
The 60-watt subwoofer pumps out clean, deep bass, thanks to its 8" front-firing woofer and down-firing port. The sub's proprietary Ribbed Elliptical Surround™ increases efficiency and fights distortion. It all adds up to powerful low frequencies that draw you into your movies and music.

Sleek finish and flexible placement options
You can easily tuck the satellites on shelves or bookcases without sacrificing much space. Or for a more sophisticated look, wall-mount them with the integrated keyhole slots, use optional brackets with the threaded inserts, or position them on stands. All six pieces have a sleek, high-gloss finish reminiscent of a grand piano. These speakers complement just about any décor, and they look right at home next to today's flat-panel TVs.

    Driver Technology

Flat On-Axis Frequency Response With Wide Bandwidth: The ENERGY 5.1-Channel Speaker System reproduces the entire audio range in a uniform manner. By ensuring that no one frequency dominates any other, the RC-Micro 5.1ch System ensures that every note is the way it was intended to be, and the sound as natural as possible.

Wide and Constant Dispersion: The RC-Micro 5.1 System provides an even pattern sound at all frequencies in all directions throughout the room.

Low Distortion Resonance: No speaker system is distortion or resonance-free, but the ENERGY 5.1 Speaker System has achieved a significantly lower distortion level with a clearly audible improvement.

Amplifier Requirements: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1 System is designed to operate on a wide range of AV receivers and/or amplifiers with a power rating of 20 to 100 watts continuous per channel. The impedance for all speakers is 8-ohms, allowing almost any amplifier to function well.

Break-In Period: ENERGY recommends that you break in this speaker system for 50 hours before playing the speaker at their full capabilities. This can be easily done by putting your compact disc player on Repeat mode, while playing a CD with a wide dynamic range ant normal listening levels.

    Satellite Speakers

4 Matching Satellite Speakers: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1-Channel Home Theater System features four matching micro-sized satellite speakers. Each satellite speaker features a high-gloss black finish, a removal cloth grille, gold-plated spring-post terminals (accommodates up to 15 AWG speaker wire), and a rear-mounted key-hole slot for wall-mounting (mounting screws not supplied). The key-hole slot can be removed to reveal a 1/4"-20 threaded insert for wall-mounting the speakers using an optional bracket (sold separately). The satellite speakers can also be placed and secured on optional speaker stands or shelves using the supplied self-adhesive rubber feet.

Drivers: The micro-sized satellite speakers feature a 0.5" Hyperbolic Aluminum-Dome tweeter and 2.5" High-Excursion Aluminum Cone woofer with a rubber surround inside a magnetically shielded acoustic suspension enclosure. The speakers are rated at 8-ohm. The satellite speakers have a frequency response of 150 to 23,000 Hz.

    Center Channel Speaker

Matching Center Channel Speaker: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1-Channel Home Theater System's matching center-channel speaker is slightly larger than the four matching micro-sized satellite speakers and can be mounted horizontally or vertically. The center-channel satellite speaker features a high-gloss black finish, a removal cloth grille, gold-plated spring-post terminals (accommodates up to 15 AWG speaker wire), and a rear-mounted key-hole slot for wall-mounting (mounting screws not supplied). The key-hole slot can be removed to reveal a 1/4"-20 threaded insert for wall-mounting the speaker using an optional bracket (sold separately). The center-channel speaker can also be placed and secured on an optional speaker stand or shelf using the supplied self-adhesive rubber feet.

Drivers: The center-channel speaker features a 0.5" Hyperbolic Aluminum-Dome tweeter and 2.5" High-Excursion Aluminum Cone woofer with a rubber surround inside a magnetically shielded acoustic suspension enclosure. The speaker is rated at 8-ohm. The center-channel speaker has a frequency response of 150-23,000 Hz.

    Powered Subwoofer

Powered Subwoofer: The ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1-Channel Home Theater System features an 8" powered subwoofer with a 60 watt continuous (240 watts dynamic) amplifier. The powered subwoofer contains a front-firing injection molded 8" cone woofer with a ribbed elliptical surround inside a bass reflex enclosure with a down firing port. The 8" woofer is powered by a built-in 60 watt continuous (240 watt dynamic) amplifier. The powered subwoofer has a frequency response of 36 to 180Hz.

    Controls:

    • Volume Level: This knob can be adjusted to control the level of output from the subwoofer. The level chosen should allow the subwoofer to blend its output with the rest of the 5.1-channel speaker system.
    • Low-Pass Filter: This control allows for the adjustment of the low-pass filter. Adjustments can infinitely be made from 40 to 150Hz. This will determine the highest frequency that the subwoofer will reproduce.
    • Phase: This switch allows for the adjustment of the phase of the subwoofer, in relation to the five other speakers in the system from 0 or 180 degrees
    • Power Mode: This switch can be set to either On, Off, Auto. If the switch is in the Off position, the subwoofer will not power up. If the switch is in the On position, it will constantly remain on. If the switch is set to the Auto position, when a signal is present the subwoofer will turn on and will automatically turn off several minutes after a signal is no longer present.
    • Status Indicator (Front-Panel): The LED found on the front panel will illuminate in blue when the subwoofer is functioning. If the unit is Auto mode and is not receiving a signal, the light will remain off.

    Connections:

    • Line/Sub In: These inputs are an RCA type LFE/stereo/mono input. If you are connecting your subwoofer to an A/V receiver with an LFE or Subwoofer preamp output, connect a single RCA cable to the LFE/Left input. If you are connecting your subwoofer to an AV receiver without a dedicated subwoofer or LFE preamp output but does features a stereo RCA output, use stereo RCA cable and connect to both the LFE/Left and Right inputs.
    • Speaker Level In: The Speaker Level input are designed to be used on receivers or amplifiers that do not incorporate any RCA type subwoofer outputs. If your receiver is equipped with an RCA type subwoofer outputs, these speaker level inputs should not be utilized.
    • Power Cord Connector: The powered subwoofer features an attached 7' AC power cord terminate by a two-prong AC plug.

    Mounting Options

Speaker Placement: Speaker placement can be critical in the performance of any home theater speaker system. Follow these guidelines to get the most out of your ENERGY RC-Micro 5.1 system.

    • Front Satellite Speakers: For best stereo imaging, the left and right speakers should be the same distance from their respective side walls. If the distance from one speaker to the listener is very different from the other, it can affect the soundstage or stereo imaging. Therefore, the ideal position is having the speakers equidistant to you, the listener.
    • Center-Channel Satellite Speaker: The center-channel can be expected to reproduce as much a 60% of a movie's soundtrack, most of which is dialogue. In order to maintain the effect of voices emanating from the actor's mouth, the center speaker should be centrally located between the left and right main channels and placed above or below the television. Be sure that the center speaker's front baffle is flush with the front face of the television or cabinet to maximize dispersion.
    • Surround Satellite Speakers: The surround speakers can be positioned in a variety of locations. The surround placement is usually dictated by the room, where the walls and room boundaries happen to be, and where speaker cable can be easily run. The most common surround speaker locations are the following:
      • Side Walls: For best results in side wall mounting applications, position the speaker adjacent to and slightly behind the primary listening area at a height of approximately 6 feet.
      • Rear Walls: For best results mounting on a rear wall, position the speakers so they flank the main listening area and point towards the front of the room. They should be raised to a height of approximately 6 feet and should ideally have a space of 6 feet between them.
    • Power Subwoofer: The placement of the ENERGY subwoofer is critical to its performance. The three most common locations include:
      • Corner Of Room: Results in a boomy or exaggerated low frequency response.
      • Side Wall: Moderate bass performance with increased fidelity over corner placement.
      • Beside Front Speaker: Creates a better blend with the front speaker, but sacrificing overall volume.

So far so good, still in the 50 hours break in period as recommended. Treble is great with the Onkyo receiver and better than the old Lifestyle Bose we replaced. Highly recommend this system.

    Energy RC-Micro

Written By Shaun, LI,NY on Saturday, January 19, 2013

I installed these into my 16x12 bedroom six months ago and have really enjoyed them so far . The house is a ranch so I was able to hang these on the excellent Pinpoint AM20's from ceiling and wire from above attic. I used in wall audioquest flx-14/2 which just fit the micro's terminals. banana plugged the receiver side. The receiver is the Denon 2312CI networked w airplay etc I bought on sale here last year , Denon blu-ray 1713ud , apple tv1080, on wall 50" Panasonic plasma 1080,. I had an SVS SB12 sub in storage from an older system in my old house so I installed that as well. No wimpy subs here.. I thought to myself when I was installing this system I could always drop more expensive speakers on the existing system if these didn't satisfy, these micros certainly don't break the bank like M&K or Anthony Gallo so no biggy. Anyway nothing has been changed, the system just rocks ! They have surpassed my expectations by a long shot. Occasionally some friends come in and can't believe the sound in this room. They took a few weeks to loosen up and sound more relaxed, easy to look at, great value. Don't overlook them
    Pros:
    value
    Cons:
spring loaded binding post, hey I guess we cant have cardas for this price but no problem

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

HOLY C--P!!!! I am impressed. I did a lot of research prior to buying this set up. I wanted small speakers but was extremely unsure how they would sound. I listen to a lot of different music, so I wanted something that could handle everything from '80s hairbands to today's heavy metal to hip hop. Plus give me the theater effect on movies, and I definitely found it. I retired my 80's BIG Yamaha speakers which I liked a lot also, but just wanted something a little more refined. When I say retired I mean they still work fine and now will be moved into my garage. This is my first surround system that has a sub so my review may not be the most accurate, but if you're looking for a lot of bang in a small package this is it and at a very good price.
    Pros:
Small speakers that don't attract attention. Excellent sound for both music and movies.
    Cons:
    Haven't found any yet.

Really good sound at an amazing price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even with the very good reviews on the Crutchfield site, I was not convinced that such small speakers could produce the sound I wanted for my 21x27 foot room. Because of the 60 day return policy i decided to give them a try and I am glad I did. These are amazing little speakers that perform very good in my room. The sound is crystal clear. The only thing I am not 100% satisfied with is the sub woofer, but for the price I can deal with a little less base than would be ideal.
    Pros:
    Small but still sound great.
    Cons:
Base produced by the sub woofer could be a bit stronger..

    Energy RC-Micro 5.1

Written By albinomocha, Minneapolis, MN on Wednesday, November 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Energy RC Micro 5.1 system from a cnet review I read initially on the Energy Take Classic 5.1 system. I almost bought the Take Classic system until I ran across the Micro system and started researching the differences and reading all the reviews I could on it. I ultimately decided on the Micro system and I'm happy I did. I had my heart set on the Bose jewel speakers until I read all the negative reviews on them and Bose in general. I'm only using the right, left and center channel speakers with the sub and so far, everything sounds awesome! I have it hooked up to my new Yamaha RX-V471 receiver and 55" Sony NX720. I was able to find a separate new Energy RC Micro center channel speaker on eBay and will be using it with my other 2 speakers for my upstairs living room. I'm very happy with this system! Thank you Crutchfield for having the lowest price on this system with free shipping (got this tip from a review I read). P.S. I bought 16 gauge speaker wire from Monoprice.
    Pros:
Speakers are tiny, sub is also not obnoxiously huge, pretty black piano finish, packs quite the punch for such small speakers, and the price from Crutchfield can't be beaten!
    Cons:
    None!

Wow! Great Speakers at a great price.

Written By Vicente, DPO, AE - Rome, Italy on Saturday, November 10, 2012

I've had these speakers for about a month now, and I love them. I purchased these speakers after reading all the great reviews on them -- the reviews on various shopping and technology sites were all consistently very positive with many of them comparing these speakers and their cheaper Engergy Classics to speakers many hundreds of dollars more expensive. I purchased these to replace a set of Bose bookshelf speakers which sound great but which each weigh about 20 times what these little Engergy speakers weigh. I'm not an audiophile. All I know is that these sound as good as my large Bose speakers and for their size, I'm amazed at how they can fully cover my 15' x 20' living room. The high frequencies sound "crisp" to me; the low frequencies from the subwoofer sound very natural -- not artificially "thundering" like the sound from the 18-year-old subwoofers I had been using.

My biggest complaint about these Energy RC-Micro speakers is that it was difficult to mount them on the universal satellite speaker mounts I purchased online. The speakers have threaded (1/4"-20 threads) that are recessed about 1/2" or so on the back, so I had to purchase extra long screws to mount them to my speaker mounts. The connectors on the back of these speakers seem a bit flimsier than the ones on more expensive speakers.

Other than that, I've been very happy with my Energy speakers. I'm still very amazed at what comes out of these tiny little speakers.
    Pros:
Great value -- amazing sound for the price. Small. Great sound from low bass to high freq.
    Cons:
Recessed mounting threads on back of speakers make it difficult to mount them using universal (generic) speaker mount. Spring-loaded connectors for the speaker wires seem a bit flimsy. Instructions that came with these speakers appear to be not completely accurate.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read a lot of reviews after I decided to upgrade my stereo system. These speakers were well respected and were small. Being small, they would fit into my house in a manner that my wife would agreed with. I've had them for a month and they're great, performing as expected and as advertised in all the reading I've done. I recommend them!
    Pros:
    Everything promised!
    Cons:
When mounting to speaker stands, the supplied bolts will thread to the stand after removing the plastic insert for receiving a wall mounting bolt. This wasn't clear in the instructions.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these and have them hooked up in large living room with vaulted ceiling. I have a denon 3312 powering them and the sound is great. I would even say it sounds very much like an actual movie theater. Plenty of accurate sound and I have not had to turn the volume all the way up either. Feel free to ask any questions and I will try to answer...
    Pros:
Sound quality out of a very compact size. Close second is the price.
    Cons:
Can not attach banana plugs and it is somewhat hard to find wall mounts for these speakers

    energy micro 5.1 speakers

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was replacing ancient acoustic suspension speakers. I had read the internet reviews of the energy speakers, but couldn't find them anywhere to try them out. I took a gamble jand ordered them. They are wonderful. They are so small they are inconspicuous, sitting on shelves. The subwoofer is tucked away on the floor. And they sound great in my 15'x18' room. The subwoofer was actually defective (i bought this as a scratch and dent), and after a short troubleshooting session, crucified sent out replacement.

The whole experience was really positive, and i recommend the speakers and Crutchfield whole heartedly. Fyi, i am using a dated Panasonic sa-he100 receiver and they work well together. So there was no need to replace the receiver because i was getting new speakers. The receiver can live to die a natural death instead of being put out to pasture.
    Pros:
Sounds great. Out of sight. Hard for me to think of this as budget priced as they were described on the internet but i guess modest price counts.
    Cons:
    Haven't found any.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked for one week, then the sub died. Sounded Great for a 14x14 'man cave'. Hooked up to an older Onkyo TX-SR803. Exchange literally took 5 minutes on the phone, hopefully the new one will work. Really like the system and hope to keep it.
    Pros:
Crutchfield's Customer Support, Great Sound when working, easy on the eyes, versatile mounting.
    Cons:
Sub died, Small connectors for banana plugs.

Nice speakers for my daughter's room

Written By Dave S, Greensboro, NC on Saturday, May 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this system into my daughter's room. Mounted the surround speakers with the Sanus WMS5B Black Five Pack Tilt Swivel mounting kit. With a little modifications to the mounts, the system came together quite well. I also used Monster connectors to do it all right. Along with a new 32" flat panel TV and Yamaha AV receiver, she's pretty much good to go along with her Blu-ray player & Netflix. For a twelve year old, she's got it made!
    Pros:
Great sound, with a low profile package.
    Cons:
None. Some reviews pointed out the black finish of the speakers revealed fingerprints easily- but that's not really an issue with this layout.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My girlfriend had a nice Vizio 32" LCD TV that was sitting in a corner gathering dust while she watched DVDs and Netflix on her computer monitor. She also has a small (roughly 15'x15') room that wasn't getting much use. I had a really nice NAD L73 DVD / receiver that I wasn't using, so it seemed to make sense to pool our resources for a modest home theater. All that we needed were speakers, and the Energy RC-Micro 5.1 from Crutchfield seemed perfect for our needs and budget. Set-up was very straightforward, with 16 gauge wire used to connect the speakers while the subwoofer was connected to the NAD's line-level SW output. For attaching the speakers to the drywall, I used #4-6 x 7/8" anchors and #6 x 1-1/4 round head slotted screws. These screws fit the slots in the speakers perfectly, and with a little adjustment of depth allow the speakers to fit snugly against the wall. Once everything was set up, it was time to try the "new" system out. To be honest, when I first opened the box containing the speakers and sub, I was a bit surprised at how small everything was, but I was much more surprised at the quality of the sound! The subwoofer was positioned in a corner of the room, and at first was a bit "boomy", but this was fixed by moving it slightly further into the room. My friend bought a Roku player for streaming Netflix and internet radio. Both movies and music sound excellent and the surround sound is very "involving". We are very happy with the RC-Micro 5.1.
    Pros:
Compact size, straightforward set-up, excellent sound. Perfect for a small room home theater system. Nice "piano black" finish.
    Cons:
    Not appropriate for large rooms.
