Metra

If you've replaced the radio in your Ford, Lincoln or Mercury, you've heard an audible "thump" sound when you turn on the power. The reason? Your Ford radio sent 5 volts to turn on the factory amp, not the 12 volts that your new car stereo delivers. In other words, the amp is simply getting too much juice.

This AFDI-5V converter from Axxess will drop that voltage down to 5 volts, which the factory amp can handle better for an easier (and quieter) start. Warranty: 60 days.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so, then check here for a list of parts. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Features

Overview: When replacing factory radios in vehicles with factory installed amplifiers (mainly in Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles), an audible "pop" through the speakers may be heard; especially the subwoofer. The main reason for this "pop" noise is that the factory amplifiers do not require 12-volts to turn on, but instead require 5-volts. The Axxess AFDI-5V 12-volt to 5-volt converter takes a normal 12-volt turn-on from an aftermarket head unit and drops it down to 5-volts, which the factory amplifier handles better. A 3-wire hook-up makes the AFDI-5V simple to install.

  • Connect the Blue/White wire to the aftermarket head unit's amplifier turn on wire.
  • Connect the Black wire to chassis ground.
  • Connect the Blue/Red wire to the vehicle's factory amplifier turn-on wire.

Volt Reduction Harness

Written By Eric, Salt Lake City, UT on Saturday, May 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Either this items does not work or we hooked it up wrong. I am guessing we hooked it up wrong. The instructions for this item were probably the some of the worst we have encountered. It appeared that they used different terminology for some of the wires than JVC did for their wires. Needless to say, we hooked it up but the "pop" is still there and is annoying. I have no desire to spend another 2-3 hours trying to fix it, and I'm not sure I could anyway.
Pros:
At this point there are none. Just a waste of money.
Cons:
Instructions are not clear. Item is not working as advertised. As I said above, terminology used for the wires is not the same. I think if you do this sort of thing all the time you probably won't have an issue. For all I know it is hooked up correctly and just doe not work but I may never know.

I had no idea that anything like this was even necessary. It has been over 30 years since I've installed a stereo into a car but Crutchfield made the experience as easy as could be. This harness drops the amp voltage from 12 volt to 5 volt and eliminates the loud pop at boot up if you have too much voltage. Works perfectly!
Pros:
Simple straightforward easy installation.
Cons:
None!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The piece was sent separately after I described a loud popping noise comming from my new Kenwood CD receiver. After installing it, the stereo no longer worked. (The technician told me it should have been included in the installation package so it was free.) Trouble shooting it with the technician revealed it was defective. They offered to replace it but also suggested if i was in a hurry, i could get one off the shelf at a local electronics store. I was in a hurry... The point of this is the invoice sent with the Axxess listed it at over $$ while down the street it cost $. Granted, I had to solder 3 wires and cover it with a piece of heat shrink but for the price and 10 minutes work, well, it was a good thing it was free.
Pros:
Preassembled, ready to go and it will eliminate the "pop".
Cons:
I was defective. (and potentially expensive)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since this came for free with my receiver, I can't gripe. I didn't try the system without it, so I can't say for sure that it was needed. What I do know is that I don't get a voltage pop and it performed without a hiccup.
Pros:
simple instructions
Cons:
none

Solved the Thump sound in my Ford Escape

Written By Maddog, Pennsylvania on Sunday, October 28, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 03 Ford Escape had the Mach Sound system with built-in Subwoofer. The Sub would make a loud thump sound when you turned the key ignition on. This product solved that issue and the Sub works with no issues. Great idea!
Pros:
Worked like a charm. Easy installation.
