DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

Our take on the Kenwood KDV-412

by Ken Nail

Kenwood's KDV-412 DVD receiver makes a great quarterback for your car's video system, allowing you to send video to rear-seat monitors and control the action from the front seat. This single-sized receiver doesn't have a built-in video screen, but you can use the dual-zone feature to listen to a second source up front while your passengers enjoy the show in the back.

Sound controls
Sound is king with this Kenwood. The KDV-412 offers a powerful amplifier and premium digital-to-analog converter, along with a host of soundshaping tools. The 3-band EQ lets you get the kinks out of your car's acoustics and has six built-in EQ curves for quick adjustments. Kenwood's System E's crossover feature allows you to trim some of the lows out of your front and rear speakers and adjust the low frequencies going to your powered sub, so your equipment plays more efficiently. If you're building a full system, the three sets of preamp outputs send a strong 4-volt signal to your amps for superior sound quality and lower noise levels.

iPod® and other options
Add Kenwood's iPod adapter to control and play the music from your iPod in your car. You can also burn MP3 or WMA files to a recordable CD or DVD for hours and hours of listening from a single disc. With the addition of an optional satellite radio tuner you'll have access to almost unlimited news, talk, and commercial-free music, while an optional HD Radio™ tuner lets you enjoy enhanced sound quality from participating AM and FM stations. Connect Kenwood's Bluetooth® adapter for making safer hands-free calls in your vehicle.

Video files must have one of the following extensions: mpg, mpeg, mpe, m1v, or m2v.

Note: This unit is not equipped with a video monitor. You will need to connect the KDV-412 to an external video monitor (sold separately) to view video or photos.

JPEG Still Image Playback: The KDV-412 DVD-receiver supports playback of JPEG still image files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+RW discs. Picture files must have on of the following extensions: jpg, jpeg, jpe, jiff.

MP3/WMA Audio Playback: The KDV-412 can play MP3 (32-320 kbps) and WMA (48-192 kbps) files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 254 folders, and 255 files per folder. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (Ver.1.0/1/2/2.3) information. The headunit will display up to 30 characters.

Text/Title Scroll: The KDV-412 will display CD text, Audio file text, RDS, Satellite radio text. You can turn the scrolling feature "on" to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Music Search: The Kenwood DVD-Receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to restrict DVD playback according to a predetermined level. You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password.

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The unit features a fold-down, detachable face to deter theft. The DVD-receiver comes supplied with a soft black fabric, draw string face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis. You must manually fold the face down before inserting or ejecting a disc.

Off Eject: The KDV-412 allows you to eject your disc for 10 minutes after switching off the vehicles engine.

CD Force: When there is a problem with playing a CD with a special format, this setting plays the CD by force. Some CDs still may not play in the CD Force mode.

      Tuner Features

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the DVD-Receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling. The tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Radio Data System (RDS): The unit's tuner features RDS (Radio Data System). RDS is a service used by some radio stations to transmit data outside of normal radio broadcast signals. When an RDS station is received, you can immediately find out what kind of data is being transmitted by looking at the program service name which appears in the display after the frequency. RDS features an emergency transmission function which interrupts regular programming to broadcast an emergency announcement (such as a tornado or severe storm). There is also a switchable Traffic Information function, which will automatically tune a traffic bulletin when it is broadcast, even when you're not listening to the radio.

      Audio Features

Rotary Volume Control: The DVD-Receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings.

Dolby Digital Output: The Kenwood KDV-412 is equipped with an optical digital output which allows you to connect the DVD-receiver to an external Dolby Digital processor.

Three 4.0V Preamp Outputs: The KDV-412 features three 4.0V preamp outputs (Front, Rear, and Subwoofer) which allow you to connect an external amplifier.

Note: The subwoofer preamp output can also be used as a stereo audio output to transfer audio to an external monitor and headphone system.

Amplifier Bypass: If you plan to use external amplifiers to power your vehicle speaker's, then you can turn the unit's built-in amplifier off to enhance sound quality.

Built-in Crossovers: The KDV-412 DVD-receiver features a built-in high-pass crossover for the units front and rear channels and low-pass crossover for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. The built-in high-pass crossover can be set to Thru (full-range)/40/60/80/100/120/150/180/200Hz. The built-in low-pass crossover can be set to Thru (full-range)/50/60/80/100/120Hz.

Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the DVD-Receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer preamp output's phase can be adjusted to 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, and Natural.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The KDV-412 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (DVD, Tuner, and Aux).

Dual Zone: The unit's dual zone control allows you to independently set the source for the front and rear channels. You can se the second zone to Off, DVD, or Aux. You can adjust the volume of the 2nd Zone independently from 0 to 35.

Volume Offset:The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Note: The unit's subwoofer preamp output can be used to transmit audio along with the composite video output to your external monitor.

Remote Control: The KDV-412 comes with the RC-DV430 IR wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. The remote will control Audio, DVD, Tuner, and Satellite radio functions. The remote control allows direct access of your music tracks and direct access to discs loaded in a connected CD-changer (sold separately). It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium "coin-type" battery.

iPod Ready: This receiver is compatible with the optional Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod control interface (item # 113IP500). When an iPod is connected to the interface, all of the iPod's controls will be disabled and it will be controlled from the receiver. With this interface, you will be able to play your iPod music files through your Kenwood receiver and in most cases have all the titling information appear on the receiver's display. The optional KCA-iP500 is compatible with iPod click-wheel (3rd generation), iPod photo (4th generation), iPod video (5th generation), iPod mini (1st/2nd generation), iPod nano (1st/2nd/3rd/4th/5th generation), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), and iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd generation). The unit is also compatible with Apple's iPhone (3G/3GS).

Note: This unit does not allow iPod video/photo playback through its composite video output.  This adapter will not charge the iPhone3G/iPhone3GS, iPod nano (4th/5th generation), and iPod touch (2nd/3rd generation).

Bluetooth Ready: The unit is also Bluetooth compatible using the optional Kenwood KCA-BT200 Bluetooth adapter. Using this adapter you can make and answer phone calls from the Kenwood headunit. You can even download your Phonebook information from your compatible mobile phone into the headunit. You are able to register up to five compatible Bluetooth cell phones when using the KCA-BT200 adapter. Visit Kenwood.com for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113KTCHR20 or 113HR300), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional Sirius Satellite Radio tuner to this receiver:

      • Sirius Tuner: To receive Sirius Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner and the Kenwood KCA-SR50 adapter (package item number 700SIRKENW).
      • Sirius DockDock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the Kenwood KCA-SR50 adapter and the SC-VDOC1 dock (package item number 700SIRPKEN).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

Changer Controls: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position. In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and magazine disc random. When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.

Rear Auxiliary Input Ready: The unit already features a front panel auxiliary input, but if you need a second auxiliary input, one can be added to the rear of the unit. When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept a rear input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (item 113CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit. When the KCA-S220A 2-changer switch (item 113KCAS220) is used, you can connect a CD changer and an auxiliary audio source at the same time. When an auxiliary audio source is connected, you can choose from one of six names for the source: AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video or TV.
