Niles Audio

Our take on the Niles WMVC100E

by Amanda P.

The Niles WMVC100E lets you adjust the volume of your outdoor speakers right from your porch or patio — no more having to run back into the house to turn your music up or down. Its rugged, weatherproof enclosure makes it ideal for outdoor installations. You can mount it safely on your deck or even next to a hot tub for easy, convenient control.

Note: You'll need to wire the in-wall control to a 12-volt power source, such as the Niles MVC HUB4.

"Neighbor-friendly" automatic muting
You can program this smart volume control to automatically play music through the connected speakers when you turn on your system, or remain silent until you activate it manually. This "auto-muting" feature is especially handy for outdoor speaker installations — you'll never accidentally surprise your friends or neighbors with unexpected sound when you fire up your system, regardless of what the volume level was when you turned it off.

Safely connect multiple pairs of speakers
If you use the WMVC100E with other volume controls that have matching impedance magnification, you can connect up to sixteen pairs of speakers to your amplifier or receiver. This feature is great for anyone who wants to power speakers in multiple rooms, or for folks who plan to expand their system in the future.

  • requires 12-volt power connections, such as provided by the Niles MVC HUB4
  • waterproof construction
  • impedance-magnifying design

    Features

Overview: The WMVC100E is a waterproof stereo volume control that connects between the MVC HUB4 speaker hub output and a pair of speakers. Premium-quality parts and construction ensure high-fidelity sound with flat frequency response and 100 watts continuous power handling.

PVC Enclosure: The volume control mounts in the supplied weatherproof PVC enclosure, which features a rubber gasket that seals out the moisture. The PVC enclosure has a paintable finish.

12-Position Volume: The 12-step control knob offers pop-free volume adjustment with maximum attenuation greater than 48 dB.

Autoformers: To assure minimal dissipation of internal power with virtually no power wasted as heat, autoformers are used instead of L-pads as the volume-controlling element.

Impedance Magnifying Circuit: The WMVC100E has additional autoformer windings that magnify the impedance of connected speakers, still allowing all 12 steps of volume adjustment. You can magnify the speakers' impedance by a factor of one, two, four, or eight, allowing you to connect up to eight pair of speakers to a single amplifier or receiver (assuming 8Ω speakers and an amplifier with a minimum impedance rating of 8Ω).

Muting Circuit: A relay is opened and sound is totally muted at the press of the button below the volume knob. The programmable automatic muting circuit keeps music from playing in specific locations when you turn on your audio/video system. Note: Because the muting circuit requires 12 volts DC to operate, the unit must be connected to power and ground with item 190MVCHUB4 (or some other speaker level distribution system with 12 volt output).

Speaker Connectors: Removable, screwless speaker connectors make installation quick and secure. Each connector can accept up to 14-gauge wire.

Isolated Grounds: Isolated left and right-channel grounds ensure safety with any amplifier.

Impedance Compatibility: The WMVC100E can be used with 4Ω, 6Ω, and 8Ω speaker systems.

    Installation Considerations

Mounting: The WMVC100E surface-mounts on a wall or mounts directly on a 1" PVC conduit.

Speaker Wire: The speaker connectors will accept stranded copper wire up to 14-gauge. Niles recommends 16-gauge for wire runs under 80 feet and 14-gauge for 80 feet or more. Larger wire is not recommended as it will not fit into the connectors. Solid-core, aluminum, or Romex wire is not recommended. Most states require in-wall speaker wire to have a specific CL fire rating.

Required Tools: To install the WMVC100E, you will need a Phillips head screwdriver and wire stripper.

    Disappointing so far

Written By John H, Lakeville MN on Saturday, June 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed on my deck. I ran the speaker and 12 volt power supply wires OK, box is tight but can work with that. No decent info from Niles or anywhere else regarding power requirements. I tried two different power supplies (both 12 vdc) but cannot defeat muting. LEDs on control flash. Nothing in the manual or on Niles website say anything about what this means. Better documntation would be good - Niles is NOT user friendly - this control costs too much and isnt easy to work with. Disappoint so far.

A Great Volume Control with Mute

Written By Darren, Longview, TX on Thursday, December 02, 2010

While I do understand Todd's dissappointment there was an easy solution to the 12VDC
supply. The MCV HUB4 supplies 200mA 12VDC to the volume control which is what is
needed to power up the mute function. Nowhere on Niles' website does it say that you
have to use the MCV HUB4 to do this. I went out on several audio/video forums and the
members there are simply using a 120VAC to 12VDC 200mA to 1000mA power supply.
This simply plugs into the back of the receiver where the AC outlet(s) is as this turns on
and off with the receiver. From there you route the power wire (which will have to be
extended) with the speaker wires out to the volume controller and the problem is solved.
Works like a champ and the mute function is definitely worth the extra time and money in
my opinion. I gave it four stars as the installation with the mute function is a bit more
complicated. The volume control itself is definitely a five star controller.

    Power?

Written By Todd, Minneapolis, MN on Monday, April 28, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is rendered inoperable if you do not combine it with the Niles
MVC HUB4 Distribution Hub. The muting feature requires a power source.
If you do not have this component the prodcut will NOT function. This is not
listed in the overview, hands-on Research or even the product manual. Call
Niles for technical support with questions.

This was rated at 1 star because the information was not cimmunicated
properly. Not because of product performance.
