NAD

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Our take on the NAD C 316BEE

by Jim Richardson

The foundation of a simple, yet great-sounding stereo system

You don't need huge power or a lot of buttons to push. You don't need to spend a lot of money, either. If all you want is great sound for a small space, NAD has the solution. The C 316BEE is the perfect little integrated amp to anchor that high-quality audio system in your den, bedroom, or office. It delivers accurate, musical sound in a compact, easy-to-enjoy package.

No frills, just thrills

High-current toroidal transformer

The large toroidal transformer is a key to this affordable amp's amazingly clean, dynamic sound.

NAD designed this amp using the same principle behind their higher-end components — a no-frills approach that puts the focus squarely on performance, instead of bells and whistles. It boasts a high-current toroidal transformer — usually found only on expensive audiophile gear - and other carefully selected parts to provide punchy, lifelike sound. It makes the amp sound much more potent than its 40-watts-per-channel rating would lead you to expect.

This integrated amp offers enough inputs to connect six audio components, plus a handy front-panel minijack for hooking up a portable music player. And the included remote gives you easy control of the amplifier and the other NAD audio components in your system.

Add a CD player like NAD's C 515BEE and good set of bookshelf speakers like the PSB Image B6. Turn off your TV and phone. Now relax and rediscover the simple pleasure of listening to great music.

    The NAD C 316BEE Rocks!

Written By Caldo, Centennial, CO on Monday, May 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The NAD C 316BEE Rocks! I procured this amp to supplement my home audio system and to slave it to a preamp. I read one review somewhere that stated the bass control was useless - not at all! (I think that reviewer did not understand how to use the Tone Defeat button). I have recommended this amp highly to my friends - at 40 continuous watts it has plenty of power. It is worth every peeny and more that I paid for it.
    Pros:
    Solid engineering and very powerful.
    Cons:
None - quite pleased with the product!

    Maybe too much volume.

Excellent entry level for a 2.0 or 2.1 system

Written By Joe, Connecticut on Sunday, January 27, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price and quality this cannot be beat for an entry level hi fi 2.0 or 2.1 desktop or bookshelf setup. Amazingly clear and defined. No bells and whistles, all quality usable technology.
    Pros:
    Clean and clear Attractive
    Cons:
Lacks line out or LFE for subwoofer, but that can be mitigated by wiring sub in parallel so this is a minor issue

    nice little unit

Written By Eric, Boston, MA on Saturday, December 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a sweet, if slightly quaint, little amplifier. I bought it to replace a Denon which was too large to fit in my new living-room setup. In a side-by-side comparison using the same speakers, it sounded as good as the Denon. It's worked great so far, and I'm pretty happy with it, despite a few minor shortcomings/oddities.
    Pros:
This is one of the smallest multi-input amplifiers you'll find that has a remote control for input/volume selection. Its sound fidelity meets my needs.
    Cons:
It has no digital-optical input for natively-digital sources like CD or Airtunes - just traditional RCA inputs. The remote control cannot affect bass, treble, or balance. The remote control has separate "on" and "off" buttons for some reason.

    All I needed

Written By DEC, Carmel, IN on Saturday, December 15, 2012

I needed an amplifier to power a set of Klipsch B20 bookshelf speakers. My line in is an Audio-Technica turntable. The Amplifier was easy to set up and sounds great. I ordered 12 guage speaker cable with the banana adapters pre-made and they slide easily into the speaker wire receptacles in the back of the amplifier. I would recommend this amplifier, and my experience with Crutchfield, in the future.
    Pros:
good power, relatively inexpensive for quality profuct, simple design
    Cons:
    none

    NAD C 316BEE

Written By suomynonA, Tennessee on Saturday, November 17, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This integrated amplifier replaced a 20+ year old NAD 7240PE suffering from failing power capacitors. With Boston Acoustic speakers, this amplifier provides a warm, rich sound with plenty of power. Good quality without a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles.
    Pros:
Good value. NAD quality at a good price point. Good sound.
    Cons:
Only drives a single pair of speakers. Front panel orange standby LED is annoying and bright blue runtime LEDs are too bright.

    Didn't like it's sound

Written By James, Texas on Thursday, April 26, 2012

I was helping someone close to me with their speaker setup.Since the speakers were already bought the next step was getting a new integrated amp decided to give NAD a try to see if they would really do match perfectly with PSB speakers (which I had) like many say they do.If they did I was going to keep the NAD for myself and give them my other integrated amp which is only a few months old. It doesn't the highs and overall detail was very lacking compared to the other amp I had. And the bass was really weak almost non existent. The NAD has a lot of power though and can get the speakers really loud with very little turn of the knob. But the sound just wasn't right. Thanks to Crutchfield's amazing customer service I was able to return the amp no problem. I would consider looking into Cambridge Audio,Marantz, and or Yamaha integrated amps at the moment since this NAD to my ears is a dud. But always try out for yourself if you can.
    Pros:
Very powerful can get speakers loud, I like the looks of it.
    Cons:
    Weak highs,lack of detail,weak bass.

The NAD C 316BEE is Working Great

Written By 2nd NAD, WA State on Sunday, April 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed another, smaller sound system and since I'm still using an NAD 7130 that I bought in the late 80s in the family system an NAD seemed like a no brainer. I ended up with a C 316BEE, an integrated amp that seemed like it would pair nicely with some Pioneer SP-BS41-LRs, and it does. Music sounds great, with decent range, more than enough loudness for me, nice detail, and the imaging works well with the TV too (I never understood why people need a 'center speaker' as with a decent stereo you have a soundstage that always has a 'center speaker'). I expect it to be still working as nicely in a quarter of a century as its older sibling.

Like my other NAD receiver, this one does exactly what I expect and provides good sound even through our old Bose Acoustimass (sp?) speakers. We use it with an Apple ipod dock.

Delivery was prompt and on time.
    Pros:
    Good sound
    Cons:

    NAD C316BEE

Written By SorenNM, La Canada Flintridge, CA on Friday, February 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent amplifier, very clean sound. Enough power to drive medium sensitive speakers to very high levels in a small (130 sq-ft) room. It is my son's first "good" amplifier, he uses it with Pioneer SP BS41 speakers, his iPod and my old CD-player. Great economy combination.
    Pros:
Nice clean sound, without coloration or distortion. I'm not aware of a better integrated amplifier at this price point.
    Cons:
Large cross-coupling to unterminated input connectors. If you select an input source that has nothing connected to it, you can hear, at low levels, what is being played on other inputs. That suggests that there is also a coupling the other way around and that unterminated inputs could act as antennas contributing noise. After talking to NAD support, I choose to terminate unused inputs with RCA shorting plugs.

Excellent for listening to music with two speakers

Written By JasB, Sout East Coast, USA on Thursday, October 06, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It really is a great integrated amp - perfect for a small room and a nice pair of speakers. I find the highs are very clear and the base is punchy coming from my B&W DM602s. I don't hear any harshness (I compare against my Adcom amp and preamp). I feel the sound from the B&Ws are even better on this NAD! I might have to upgrade my speakers now! My only caution to anyone looking at this unit, please note that there are no extra connections (subwoofer, surrounds) so I think the amp would work best with standard full range speakers.

    Great sound, Great Value!

Written By Christian, Encinitas, CA on Friday, June 17, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a nice follow up from NAD. I had not used their products in a number of years and needed a good amplifier w/o spending too much (for my home office). My first thought was to get a used 3020 from Ebay but researching product reviews to see what NAD had been cooking of late, it became clear that the C316BEE was a better option.

I was not disappointed! Great Sound, Great Value (and virtually no power usage in standby mode!)

    Fantastic little amp!

Written By JS, Utah on Wednesday, June 01, 2011

I'm amazed by the clean, detailed sound produced by my B&W 686 speakers when powered by this little amplifier. The NAD drives the 686s to surprisingly loud volume levels as well, despite the 686s low 84db sensitivity and the 316BEEs modest rated power of 40 watts per channel. In fact, it plays far louder than I'll ever require in my apartment living room. The 316BEE is great little amplifier and a wonderful value!

Quick review of the NAD C316BEE

Written By Mr. Bill, South Texas on Thursday, January 27, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, the NAD C316BEE arrived today and as I type this I am listening to the Dave Grusin/Lee Ritenour's album - Harlequin .... one of by favorite Brazilian jazz albums. All I can say is the sound quality is stunning. Simply beautiful!

The source is the HM 801 with Flac Lossless files. For those unfamiliar with the HM 801, it is made by the company HiFiMan in China. It is a rather pricey MP3 player whose claim to fame is its excellent DAC. The headphones I'm listening through are Sennheiser's HD 600s.

Before buying the NAD, I tried the HD 600s with the HM 801 alone and the was not adequate to the task of powering the headphones. I considered purchasing a dedicated headphone amp but decided on the NAD because I reasoned it would be more versatile.

I am not using any equalization on either the NAD or the HM 801 and the base is very strong.

This unit is set up in my man cave (home office). At some point, I may add a CD player and some modest floor speakers. We'll see. Right now though, I am thrilled with the current setup.

    Great Product

Written By Paul A, Seattle, Wa on Tuesday, January 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just received my NAD 316BEE integrated amplifier. Yes, it's the low end of NAD but they didn't skimp on the warm, clean sound. Plenty of power for my family room of about 450 square feet and beyond when I want to crank it up. Just replaced an old receiver that finally gave out after 25 years and this sounds better. I am using two bookshelf speakers with this amp. I got great customer service from Wes and fast shipping with excellent tracking information all along the route. Thank you Crutchfield.

    Nice Amp

Written By Anonymous, Central Maryland on Wednesday, July 28, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a low profile integrated amp in the bedroom to play XM, Squeezebox, & a wireless feed from my media server (Pandora, etc.). The remote had to control input selection/volume/power.

The NAD has a nice form factor, very good build quality, and the blue LEDs are subdued enough that I can leave the unit on all night and wake to music. Spec-wise 40 W/ch is a bit light for the 6Bs but I've cranked it up a number of times and have some power to spare. It's a robust 40W! The front panel media player socket is a nice feature for iPods, etc.

I could not have received the unit any faster so thumbs up for Crutchfield's super fast order processing and shipping.

I've been aware of NAD for many, many years but is the first NAD product I've owned and I'm very pleased with my choice. I recommend this product for those with modest power needs particularly if they want something with a nice, low-key appearance. Happy listening!
