Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Infinity Kappa 60.9cs

by Kristen Schaub

Infinity built their Kappa Series speakers with improved technology and high-end materials to provide you with outstanding sound reproduction. The Kappa 60.9cs component speaker system features 6-3/4" woofers with responsive woven glass-fiber cones that won't flex during a hard workout. The Plus One design offers a larger surface area for improved low-frequency output and efficiency, while longer voice coils add a little more punch to the bass. Large magnets keep the woofers running cooler by placing more steel close to the voice coils to act as a heat sink.

Textile dome tweeters
Infinity uses the same textile dome tweeters found in many of their popular home speakers with this Kappa system, so you'll hear the music the way it was recorded with minimal coloration or distortion. The tweeters handle down to 2,500 Hz, almost an octave below the tweeters in many systems, so you'll hear more definition and detail, no matter where you sit. Infinity includes mounting hardware to install the tweeters in custom or factory openings.

Premium crossover networks
The computer-optimized outboard crossover networks employ audiophile-grade components to separate highs and lows, so that the woofer and tweeter work together perfectly. You can attenuate tweeter response by 6 dB to get the perfect sonic balance if you've mounted the tweeters in a less-than-ideal factory location.

Pre-wired crossovers eliminate a time-consuming step in your installation, and terminals at the end of the crossover wires screw directly to the Kappa woofers and tweeters, leaving no chance for incorrect wiring.

Note: Infinity describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Important Note: You should use an outboard amplifier to power these speakers.

Highlights:

  • 6-3/4" component speaker system includes woofers, tweeters, and crossovers

    Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speakers use cones more surface area than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woven Glass Fiber Woofer Cones: This woven-glass-fiber material is very light and extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex. This results in very low distortion and improved clarity. The woofers have set screw input terminals that will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire.

Woofer Size: This component set is marketed as having 6-1/2" woofers; they will fit in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings, but do not use the standard 6-1/2" speaker bolt pattern. In order to install them in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings you must drill new screw holes. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no bracket need be used. If drilling in the car is not an option, the flange on the included metal bracket is wide enough to accommodate new holes being drilled; either in a standard 6-1/2" three hole pattern or a Ford non-symmetric four hole pattern. When using the bracket the depth becomes 2.279" and the mounting height becomes 0.651".

Edge Driven UHF Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has an Edge-driven UHF dome tweeter. The benefit is increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output. This technology also allows for better integration with the mid/woofer. The tweeter wire terminals are set screws, tightened using the included 1mm Allen wrench; they accept bare wire up to 14 gauge.

High-Output Design: The high output 2-ohm voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extracts every watt from factory receivers, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4 ohm speakers). The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers, designed to power a 2-ohm load.

Crossovers: Kappa speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers, using audiophile quality air core inductors and polypropylene capacitors. The crossover slope is 18 dB/octave. Each crossover has a tweeter output switch; choose between flat and -6dB.

Crossover Connections: Each crossover has set screw input and output terminals that will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire.

    Crossover Dimensions:

    • Length: 4-3/4"
    • Width: 3-1/2"
    • Height: 1-3/8"

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

    • I-Mount Tweeter Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface or flush mounted with Infinity's innovative I-Mount system:
      • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
      • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount adapter and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the flush-mount adapter (with the tweeter installed) is inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
    • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
      • Surface Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Flush Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Bottom Mount (to grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
      • Flush Mount (in-dash location): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the dash. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

    2 Pairs in a 300zx

Written By alexander1225, Florida on Thursday, November 04, 2010

These speakers are the best i have heard. They blow most anything i have ever heard. I have them hooked up to a Kappa 5 amp with a Kappa 10 sub in a sealed box and let me tell you this is the best combination. They deliver crisp and very clear highs, solid and "just right" mids and some bass(that's why i have a sub though). I do recommend you use a subwoofer in most cases and a amp no matter what with these. The highs will over power the bass all day long. Comes with many ways to mount the tweeters and poor instructions, but that's expected with such a straightforward project. Again some of the best speakers money will buy you today.

    Installation Notes

Written By Womakin, Charleston, WV on Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Chose two Infinity 60.9cs 2-way component systems sets with a pair in the front doors and a woofer in the rear door and its tweeter in the very back pillars of a 2002 Yukon XL. The Infinity's have a very high Sensitivity (93 db@1 watt@1meter), therefore they are very miserly when it comes to power. The rule of thumb is every 3 db increase in volume requires a doubling of wattage so they are way ahead of say a speaker with a sensitivity of say 87. They are crystal clear and indeed I hear stuff in the music I don't hear in other systems.

The tweeters come with like (5) ways to mount them and the one that I love and worked for me was a threaded cylinder that has a mating basket that fits in it.. The cylinder permits varying the depth of the mount (out or into the plane) by inserting homemade spacers and the basket allows aiming the tweeter at what looks like up to 45 degrees! The tweeters I replaced up front are now directed right toward the front passengers, very powerful stuff.

The speakers come with their associated passive crossovers. These things are clunky at best and I ended up putting a set under each rear seat. They could have been made with the corresponding components (for example the coil) being put with its driver (woofer) as an assembly which I would have liked since I could have freed up space for amps etc.. Regardless, they work very well as evidenced by well balanced sound.

    More than I asked for

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1997 Chevy extended cab pickup and these are in the doors. I had to make a hole in the door panel for the tweeters because they are about 1.5 inches in diameter and doidn't fit in the factory location. I have them hooked up to a 60 watt x 4 channel JL amp in bridged mode and they sound amazing. The tweeters actually hurt my ears from the volume and clarity. And they a clear at loud volumes. I listen to heavy metal, and these things do the music justice. People roll their windows up when they have to sit next to me at an intersection now. They are a little pricy, but I considered that I probably would not have to buy another set of door speakers for a very long time so I had no issues with getting them. If you are serious about music and want your tuens to sound good, loud, and crystal clear, fork out the extra cash and get these. You will not be disappointed at all.

    Just Awesome

Written By Jim, Fort Collins on Sunday, September 19, 2010

I made use of the local store to pick out my speakers. So I thought these speakers were the best, before I knew they came with tweeters. Soon as local guys started talking about 100++++ per speaker install fee, here I am. (also remember they will charge you more if you want new wiring too!!)

I listen to metal to techno. The speakers paired with my subwoofer.. wow.. clear... I mean, clear. I'm a complete audiophile, I own two sets of klipse ear buds audiophile. When I say these are clear they are clear. Though I would never run this without a sub.

What really impressed me was the crossovers had a button. Oh great I'm going to hit that when I toss them inside a panel. Nope, they unscrew and are easily tucked inside. That is smart engineering.

    great infinity components.

Written By Justin, wisconsin on Sunday, July 25, 2010

the tweeters are big. very big. I have a 2009 pontiac g6 and the tweeters had no chance of fitting in the factory locations. Fortunately I surfaced mounted them and now the tweeters point right at my face, which is awesome. the bolt pattern on the woofers is not standard but i was able to get 3 screws to catch the sheet metal and they're solid. I have these kappas powered by a kenwood x600f, 600Wx4 amp. perfect combo, the kappas get all the 2ohm power they need, and the amp is running ice cold because it has so much room to spare. I bought this amps brother for the sub, x1200m and alpine type x 12" Unfortunately the mono amp is an RMA so for now I am giving these components everything down to 50hz and the bass is tight. very loud, extremely clear, and great imaging. can't go wrong with kappa.

I have always been a fan of the Kappas. It didn't get 5 stars because of the insanely small allen key used to connect the tweeters. Besides that excellent product. Great Sound.

    why Infinity, why?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In my last truck, I owned the infinity Kappa 6.5 component system. With the tweeters on -6db, the speakers sounded good. Easy to install in factory locations, even tweeters were nice and small. Why go and change a good thing?

Too bad I didn't notice how big those tweeters were in this model. Look at the picture with all the components together, those things are huge! In my new car I could have fit last year's model tweeters in the factory location, not this year. For instance, to flush mount you need to cut at least a 2.5" diameter hole, with 2.5" depth needed. Comes with the smallest allen wrench known to man. Use the allen wrench to loosen the set screws for the tweets, but don't try to use any speaker wire over 18 ga, or it won't fit. I misplaced the allen wrench 3 times, it is so small it's hard to see when you put it down. I freaked and cried once.

And what's up with those dongles hanging off the mids? Come on man, don't need those rattling around in my door. They used aluminum set screws to boot, they like to strip, ridiculous.

Beyond the installation nightmare, it sounds good. Got the tweets on -6db again, way too bright with them full on. It was such a pain to install I'm leaving them in. Already surface mounted the tweets anyway, not taking those out. On second thought, I should take the tweets out and mount LCD screens behind those huge holes.

    All-around all-star

Written By Carlson, Richfield, MN on Saturday, September 12, 2009

These Kappa components are phenomenal all around performers. They have a hefty midrange and really do a great job of handling bass. I can really see where Infinity's research has paid off on their drivers; very little distortion. An amp is pretty much a necessity to get your money worth from any good speaker set. High quality components require high power to drive them and to achieve balanced sound. I have 400W RMS/pair and they love it. The tweeters are powerful, but I keep them set at the flat level on the crossover, and a slight tick down on the treble on my headunit. Turning the crossover to -6db took away too much in my opinion. With a good amp like I have on them, the sound is very balanced. Those complaining of the highs being too harsh, well... that's what you get when you run these speakers off headunit power; there just isn't enough juice to drive the woofers to keep up with the tweeters and you get a hallow sounding speaker with bright, tingy highs. Invest in a good amp. I run a component set in my front doors, and 2 way kappas in the rear doors and rear deck. Everyone that's been my car (Altima) is blown away at the sound and shocked I don't have a sealed 10" in the trunk. The amplifier I am using is an Orion HCCA 275G4 supplying 200 watts RMS/speaker crossed over at 50hz.

the speakers are an intense improvement from the Alpine R 6.5 coaxials i had in my door before but one thing you should be aware of, the the tweeters are brutally over-bearing. which are great for old-school hip hop but playing rock or anything that requires some good mid range. eh.

    Infinity Kappa 60.9cs

Written By rnd, Boston, MA on Thursday, April 23, 2009

Ok, I'm actually pretty impressed. I installed these in a noisy old convertible sportscar in the doors (with added soundproofing / matting). My head unit only has simple treble & bass controls (no crossover centering etc.) and I'm running them through a 40wx2 rms amp.

As has been mentioned, the tweeters are very bright. I pressed the -6db button right off the bat and they can still be shrill at times. The midrange and bass is surprisingly good. The lows are good enough to vibrate my body!

The sound doesn't take over a hi-fi home system, but I'm more than pleased with it for car audio.

Bonus - the speaker grills don't look like they belong in a spaceship.

    Infinity Kappa 60.9cs

Written By Clayton, portland, or on Wednesday, March 18, 2009

I installed these about three months ago and frankly I'm a little dissapointed with them. First off, This is the second pair of kappa's that I've owned and it seams that when infinity switch to woven glass for their mids and changed the tweeter they took a step back in sound quality. I'm currently running 100watts rmsX 2 channels@ 2ohm, They are mounted in the stock location (dynomated doors inner and outer,) with Pioneer head unit (mid level.) These speakers are not well matched and are really unbalanced with tweeters overpowering the mids ( if you have a top of the line head unit like an alpine 9887 you can overcome all of the tweeters shortcommings). I've noticed that i have to really dial back the gain or the tweeters will start to distort and sound terrible. The mid bass seems to be able to handle allot of power with out distorting. When I set the high pass at 125 hz there is 0 distortion but mids seem to lack a little bit in response and detail.
I have the tweeters set at -6db and they're still very harsh. Currently there mounted 1.5 inchs above the mids. Over all this isn't a bad component set, but for the price There are better options out there.

    Amazing!!!

Written By Kevin, Eastern NC on Tuesday, March 10, 2009

I purchased these components for my front doors and their 2-way, full range equal for my rear doors in my Dakota Quad Cab. I do have these amped up using a MTX X704 4-channel amp, running a 2ohm load.So ,it is a total of 105 watts/channel available to these Kappas!! Sound is amazing!! Highs are unreal,mid-bass is super, lows are good(considering it is a 6 1/2"). I will confess,I do have a 10" sub (MTX) in the back as well. Therefore,I am using these Kappas for mids and highs. If you are wondering, yes, they will run you out of the truck!!! As a stand-alone set-up (no sub) they are great. You will need more watts than most head units supply,an Amp is strongly recommended. The only downside to this story is the tweeter,it was too thick to do a flush mount, therefore had to settle for a top mount.Make sure you have plenty of depth to do a flush mount, and room for the housing too.

    06 Silverado ext cab

Written By Travis, Oklahoma City, OK on Saturday, November 15, 2008
    Installed in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I installed these w/ an Alpine 9886 receiver--18Wx4 RMS. They're 2 ohms, so use the available power more efficiently. The bass isn't bad, the highs are clear. I may add a sub (or two) for punchier, more solid bass, but these definitely suffice for now (my music varies from Randy Travis to Megadeth).

The install wasn't the easiest, but that's me being meticulous... I mounted the woofers and tweeters on the door panels (factory was tweeters on the panels, woofers in the doors), and crossovers inside the doors, using a hole originally used for a door panel fastener (covered by the dash when the door's closed). I cut the door panel a bit for the tweeter mount and covered the entire area with dynamat (to cover leftover factory holes as well as for matting benefits). There really was no good place for the crossovers...creativity is key (my experience with any crossover install).
Also, replacing factory components, I only used the woofer's lead; the tweeter's lead is now just hanging in the door. Somehow the separate
highs/lows aren't filtered when the tweeters' wires aren't used...it's like Positraction--it just works.

Overall, I am thoroughly pleased with the sound. I originally planned to add an amp to power them since 18x4 from the head unit doesn't seem like a lot. However, I don't know I need it; the 2 ohm rating really helps use the internal amp most effectively. I recommend these speakers, especially if you want component-quality sound powered by just your head unit.

I replaced my Alpine Type-S SPS171A components with the 60.9's. Big time
difference. These speakers rock. You will know what I mean when you turn
    the volume knob clockwise.

Installed in a 2000 Dodge Dakota
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2000 Dakota. 2 stars for the terrible literature. A few micro diagrams with ZERO text explanation for installation instruction. A few bags of screws went unused. Mostly for the assumed optional install methods. Woofers looked easy enough to install but ended up the screws I did use I had to screw in and then cut off the back side. Tweeters require custom cutting or creative strapping to panel (i cut).

Regarding sound quality. Seems the highs are over ambitious (but overall OK), but I returned my receiver for different reasons of lameness. Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X592 is pure unnecessary complication of interface. We will see how it goes off a new receiver.

They are great. Very clear, you can hear every member of the band. Sounds good with the windows down while driving on the freeway. But I will need more power.

    Infinity Kappa 60.9cs

Written By Dewayne, Atlanta on Monday, June 16, 2008

I had the infinity 2 way reference series in my car and I upgraded to these. These speakers are amazing. They are louder, clearer, and give you more sound detail. I can not imphasize how clear and cripy they are. They sounded better right out the box and I haven't even broken them in yet. Even songs you may not care about sound good through these speakers.lol You will need power though, I am running them off a 2 channel, 2ohm 200 watt RMS per channel Sony amp. (One thing to note, the tweeters are huge and they may not fit your factory location if you have one.)
