Yamaha

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than a boombox or iPod® speaker. On the other hand, you want something that's far less complex than a surround sound system. Then you'll find your sweet spot in a classic stereo receiver. Or maybe one from the new breed that includes Internet radio or other network music options. Add two speakers (and another music source, if you like), and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. It might even be all you really need for TV sound.

Our take on the Yamaha R-S700

by Marshall Chase

The Yamaha R-S700 is designed for people who like spending time listening to music. Yes, there's an input for a turntable, and a tape deck. Of course, there's an input for a CD player. But this isn't your dad's stereo.

Sound features

The R-S700 is built to play music exquisitely. CD Direct amplification reroutes the signal to a dedicated CD amp within the receiver. The result is a high signal-to-noise ratio, more detail to the music and a crisp, pure finish. Heat is the enemy of clean sound. The R-S700 features tandem heat sinks for more efficient cooling so your favorites sound like they were meant to. And the gold-plated speaker terminals and RCA jacks assure that your signal quality will be at its best both coming and going.

Extending music sources

You can add an iPod® dock or a SIRIUS satellite tuner to your system to expand your listening options. And to increase your listening space this receiver offers dual zone capability so you can connect and power speakers in another room and even control the system with a second included remote (IR repeater required, not included.)

Highlights:

  • 100 watts x 2 (stereo) into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.02% THD

    Audio Features

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

High-Quality Power Amplifier: With 100 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.019% THD), the R-S700 delivers solid, reliable audio performance even when driving both A and B speakers at the same time.

Wide Frequency Response: The receiver's wide frequency response, 10Hz to 50kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of any source with two channel analog outputs.

Dual Zone Capability: The R-S700 allows you to play two different analog sources in two zones. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs for Zone 2. You can control the receiver from the second zone using the supplied Zone 2 remote control when an infrared signal repeater system is used. A separate amplifier or stereo receiver with a pair of speakers, or a powered speaker system is required for zone 2.

Loudness: The amount of loudness compensation is adjustable, using a rotary knob on the front panel.

CD Direct Amplification: The CD Direct Amp feature routes the CD signal directly to a specially built-in amplifier, bypassing the input selector, bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. This eliminates any coloring of the CD signal and produces the most accurate sound. The resulting signal to noise ratio is 107 dB.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct feature bypasses the bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for the best sound from any source.

Record Out Selector: Front panel rotary knobs let you listen to one source, while feeding a different source to the Tape and Line 1 outputs for recording.

Speaker Terminals: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Bi-Wire: Compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A and B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel).

Impedance Switch: The R-S700 has an impedance switch, allowing operation with two pair of 6 ohm speakers.

Pre Out/Main In Loops: The left and right preamp outputs are connected to left and right main amp inputs, respectively, with U shaped metal jumpers. The jumpers may be removed to facilitate the connection of an equalizer or external amplifier.

Phono: The RCA phono input is designed for moving magnet (MM) turntable cartridges. If you have a moving coil (MC) cartridge a phono preamp is necessary.

Subwoofer Output: The stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer.

Headphone Jack: The receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel for private listening. When headphones are plugged in, the receiver's speaker output is not muted, so remember to turn the A and B speakers off.

Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the maximum volume level (separate settings in the main zone and Zone 2); used to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -89.5 dB to +16.5 dB).

Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to specify the volume level when the power is turned on (separate settings in the main zone and Zone 2); choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -89.5 dB to + 16.5 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

12V Trigger Output: A programmable mini-jack output sends a 12-volt DC turn-on signal (0.1A max) to another component that accepts a 12-volt trigger, such as a CD player or amplifier to power Zone 2. The trigger is programmed either to work with a specific zone (main room, Zone2, or either) or a specific source.

Power Management: The power (main room and Zone 2) can be set to turn off after a specific amount of time without any adjustments being made; options include 4, 8, or 12 hours.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the receiver off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

    Remote Control

RAX25 Remote Control: The main remote control can operate the receiver as well as other remote control capable components from Yamaha and other manufacturers. The remote is pre-programmed with control signals for other brand TVs, VCRs, DVD player/recorders, Blu-ray disc players, DVRs, cable boxes, and satellite receivers, along with Yamaha CD player/recorders, MD player/recorders, tape decks, and LD players.

RAX28 Remote Control: The Zone 2 remote allows you to turn the second room output on/off, select the source, adjust the volume, and control the AM/FM tuner, SiriusConnect tuner (optional), or iPod dock (optional) from the second room when an infrared signal repeater system is used.

Remote Jack: The receiver has two mini-jack inputs and a mini-jack output for use with other compatible components.

    Add-on Devices

Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: An optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (item number 607SCH1 or 220SCH2P, sold separately) can be connected to the R-S700, allowing you to listen to Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver. You can search Sirius stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning and up to 40 presets can be memorized. You can also change what Sirius information appears on the receiver's display; choose from Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.

Note: In addition to a SiriusConnect tuner, you will need a subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio to receive programming.

iPod Dock: With the optional YDS-12 iPod Dock (item number 022YDS12, sold separately), you can connect your compatible iPod or iPhone to the R-S700 and control audio/video playback using the remote control. Most fourth generation and later iPods (Click Wheel) are compatible. Video from your iPod can be displayed on a connected TV monitor using the receiver's dedicated iPod composite video output. The YDS-12 is Made for iPod and Works with iPhone compliant and supports the following iPod model functions (as of 1/10/2012):

what you are really looking for

Written By JohN, New Orlean on Saturday, May 18, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

the Yamaha R-S700 is rock solid, driving a quality of sound that you do not even know your missing. the unit is what you really need and is the bacK to the future you are really looking for. i originally purchases an ONKYO TX 8050 with the hope that the internet capability would provide a simple solution. Do not bother, more promise than delivery and very frustrating. i was happy with the sound, or so i thought!! Crutchfield did an amazing job working with me on exchanging the unit. i knew at this point i needed to ensure i got something that really would fill my expectations. the Yamaha seemed like a solid platform, simple and focused. i purchased the unit for a set of polk speakers and i wanted a unit that would serve as a platform for my stereo needs. as i said earlier the ONKYO delvered great sound, but now that i have the YAMAHA RS700 i realize i was settling for what i thought was a great sound. the Yamaha delivers at low and high volumes, the unit drives a rich deep sound, at high volumes the sound is clear, my speakers have meet nirvana!! this is a back to the future unit, it provides the rich sound that i have always looked for and i able to keep going, it can handle all of your add on units and make the best of the sound. the technology of the future is here. my advice, buy the unit for what its designed for, quality shound with the capacity to add your music sources.
    Pros:
excellent sound, easy set up, clean at high volume.
    Cons:
radio has limits, but what the heck, who uses the radio...well at least i can get what i need. the sound more than makes up for the radio!!

    Great Basic 2 channel receiver

Written By BDVit, Metro Detroit,Mich on Tuesday, April 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After going without a receiver for 2.5 yrs I settled on this Yamaha receiver. Going from a mid 1980's 100WPC Sony that fried in 2010. I tried 2 other brand recievers during the interm. and wound upp sending them back(Denon & Onkyo). I had a 1970's vintage Yamaha CR820 for 25 years without fail so I was familar with the longetivity of their product. All I can say is WOW! Speakers came alive ,better definition, plenty of power, Running a pair of Axiom M22's that I bought in 2004.Makes me want to go buy their M60 or M80 floor towers. It also helped that I rewired the speakers with approx 50 ft per side of Monster XP wire. Was time for an upgrade. Tuner pulls all the metro Detroit stations clean and noise free with a Terk FM antena.(Urban area) I am also running an aux input with Sirrius and a aux input from computer out for MP3 library burned at 320mbps (about 1200 commercial CD's ) on a 2TB HD . Works for me . Random play is my friend.
    Pros:
Great power curve easy to set up and hook up enough inputs for most audio sources on has(tape,phono,cd,3 lines in,tuner) pre outs for future needs, built in satt radio w/adpator,i-pod hook up with adaptor.
    Cons:
2 things that I wish it had 1. A parabolic graphic equalizer (had on the Sony) it would help sweeten the room acoustics. 2. At least 1 HDMI for a Digitial TV input (even though this not a AV type reciever)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Been using an old Pioneer for about 20 yrs and wanted something with a little more muscle to power the various components and speaker sets I've accumulated over the years. Called the Crutchfield team, after we inventoried what components and speakers I had and how I used them, the technician recommended the RS700. I couldn't be happier. The unit was in my house two days after I ordered it, I called Crutchfield and a technician walked me through the set up in about 15 minutes.....It's amazing what a difference. I'm driving 4 sets of speakers (through a Niles selector) and each set sounds awesome. I'm a Vinyl guy mostly but the built in CD direct amp really does put some punch into those little shiny discs...quite surprised by that. Radio reception is clean and crisp with the supplied (non powered) antenna. All this and the face of the unit / display are very cool too!
    Pros:
Ease of operation CD DIrect Amp really makes a difference Customer service / support is nothing short of sensational
    Cons:
    none

    Clear Power

Written By Andy W., Clark, Wyoming on Saturday, February 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I now have reverted back to the "old school" with this 2 channel reciever. Gave up on my Denon 5.1 system after it crashed and burned for the second time. We listen to music most of the time so the decision was a easy one. The sound is clear and beautiful to say the least. Nancy at Crutchfield analyzed my needs and thought that I needed to step back to a basic reciever with better sound. She was right. Matched with my Paradogm towers and sub I am blown away. I hope it holds up because I push it pretty hard at times when my wife isn't home. This is my second Yamaha Reciever over the years and I should have never left them.

I have always felt that speakers are the most important part of a system, but this reciever has way better sound than my AV reciever that wasn't that old.
    Pros:
    Powerful and bright.
    Cons:
    Tuner is just ok.

    Good surprises happen

Written By RossMck, Chapel Hill, NC on Wednesday, January 23, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to replace a perfectly serviceable Onkyo that had served me for several years. I had ordered new speakers (non Crutchfield), and they needed more power than the Onkyo could deliver. When the Yamaha arrived, I hooked it up, and my previous speakers (warm sounding Polk 5bs from the late 1980s) suddenly lost the bulk of the mid-range "fuzz". They were cleaner, clearer, and much more musical. I've always been skeptical about claims regarding amplifiers, since the differences should be so minor. However, had I known the impact of this receiver, I probably wouldn't have ordered the new speakers. As it is, the combination of the Yamaha and the Aerial 5B speakers I have now (they've arrived) is magical. Also of note, the tuner sensitivity is better than some reviews would suggest. We're at the margin of a regional classical station's range, and I can receive it loud and clear. All in all, an excellent receiver.
    Pros:
Ability to provide clear sound to excellent speakers; Good tuner; Easy programming for tuner pre-sets.
    Cons:
    AM stations don't pre-set

    Amazing Receiver

Written By Danny, New York,NY on Tuesday, January 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was searching for a Stereo Receiver to replace my Nakamichi receiver that quit working after 30 years of dependable service. I wanted a simple receiver with lots of power, I didn't need a 5.1 or 7.1 system. I called and spoke with Brian, a Crutchfield adviser who listened to my needs and found the Yamaha R-S700 for me. After looking over the specs for myself, I decided to purchase this unit. The set up was quick and simple. The sound is fantastic. I am sure I will have many years of listening enjoyment from this unit.
    Pros:
    Everything.
    Cons:
Size, this is a very large unit. However, with all of the power it has, I guess it needs to be this big.

    Clear and Transparent Power

Written By JoshM, Montgomery, AL on Friday, December 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very powerful and dynamic. High quality parts and a nice fit and finish. Loud and clear. No coloration or distortion as far as I can tell. True 100 wattage nominal power. I studied modern stereo receivers for at least 3 years now and decided on the Yamaha. "Audiophiles" will tell you it's overly bright or to warm and to buy Marantz because it's "musical". Don't be fooled because stereos aren't "musical" the source is "musical". It's components like quality cd players with low noise floors and quality DACs that make this so. The purpose of the stereo receiver is to be able to switch these sources and properly amplify these signals with no coloration to the sound or distortion. Your speakers will color your sound and deciding on which speaker is a long dreadful a process. Very good buy and I really like the controls on the front like the variable loudness. Thanks Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Exactly what a stereo should be.
    Cons:
You may lose the interest of those who value thousand dollar speaker cables.

It's well designed, The sound is great, The main volume control has a nice feel to it. I like the fact you can power 4 speakers at a time rather than 2... a fuller sound. You get what you pay for. This was a sure bet.
    Pros:
Great sound, well designed, powerful, reputable name

    Yamaha R-S700

Written By RCBinTN, LaVergne, TN on Monday, December 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought this receiver to drive Bose 901 speakers and their active equalizer. We've owned the Bose for a couple years but never have driven them properly. The R-S700 drives the speakers very well. Sound and soundstage are very impressive with the Yamaha/Bose system. I have owned several Yamaha receivers in the past and am always impressed with the quality and sound of the products.
    Pros:
Plenty of power Pre-out and Main-in connections
    Cons:
    None at this time

    Unpleasant sound quality

Written By Chickoo, Ohio on Wednesday, December 05, 2012

I am using Bose 901 VI and research lot as my Powerful Vintage Yamaha CA-810 stop working. It was difficult to find Best stereo receiver/ Integrated Amp for less than $1000 for my Bose. I tried Yamaha R-S700 as it has very attractive specs but it sounded thin, annoying, narrow sound stage and low power. Sorry Yamaha! Hope you understand what clean and pleasant sound provided in CA-810 model.
    Pros:
    Aluminium face plate. Good remote.
    Cons:
Unpleasant, annoying sound. surely not a natural sounding receiver, Bass, vocal and highs is thin sounding.

    Yamaha R-S700

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was recommend by one of the Crutchfield advisors. I sent him what model of speakers I had and the type of equipment I was wanting to attach like...Equalizer, Ipod, and TV. He hit it right on the head with this Receiver for the price, and I could not be happier with the power and all the functions that come with it. Very easy to hook up all the equipment and to operate. This was my first purchase with Crutchfield buying Home Stereo equipment and I was not disappointed. Thanks
    Pros:
Great price for what you are getting. The Yamaha R-S700 has no problem with a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 70's and RTi A9's either one at a time or both. To be able to attach an Ipod you will have to purchase the YDS-12 which keeps it charged up and you can change songs with the remote that come with Receiver.

I updated from an RX-497 Yamaha receiver and am very impressed with the music quality, power, and clearness of sound. I'm happy I made the change, and am very satisfied with both my Yamaha products.

This purchase was for a second receiver for another room in my condo. Having already owned one for about a month I was so impressed with the design, build quality, incredible sound quality (clairiy, detail, dynamic range) operational controls and other Yamaha products that can be used with the receiver there was no hesitation to a second purchase. The performance and specs for this receiver with its price point make it a value beyond compare. And purchasing from Crutchfield's is the greatest.
    Pros:
    Performance, value and Yamaha reputation
    Cons:
    None
