Alpine

Our take on the Alpine CDA-9847

It's awfully tough to pick out the Alpine CDA-9847 CD receiver's best feature. Is it the dash-enhancing display? The vast number of format options it gives you? And what about the high power amp and extensive sound processing? Wait a minute...maybe it's the combination of all these things that makes this receiver worth crowing about.

Variety is the name of the game with the CDA-9847. Sure it'll play your standard CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs; if you've burned MP3s and WMAs on disc, you can bring them along, too. The Quick Search button lets you scroll through folders and files in a flash, so you find the song you want fast!

The potent internal amplifier (18 watts RMS x 4, CEA-2006 compliant) will rock your speaker system. Alpine's famous Bass Engine® lets you adjust the tone exactly to your liking, while sound-expanding BBE® processing adds focus and impact to all your music. For even more juice, you can send signal to external amplifiers using the three sets of preamp outputs.

This versatile receiver is also compatible with Alpine's KCA-420i iPod adapter. That's right — you can control your iPod right from your in-dash receiver. That's simply a mountain of music at your fingertips.

As if all that weren't enough, this powerhouse also features built-in satellite radio controls. Just add a compatible tuner and antenna, and subscribe to your preferred service (XM or SIRIUS), and you've opened up a world of coast-to-coast digital entertaiment, highlighted by over 120 channels of music, news, sports, and entertainment. You may never get out of the car again.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or Sirius Satellite Radio receiver to the CDA-9847. To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional Terk XMD1000 Universal tuner (209XMD1000) and the Terk XM Direct Smart Digital Adapter for Alpine (209XMDALP1). To receive Sirius Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional Sirius tuner for Alpine (item # 607SIRALP1) directly to the head unit. A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi or Sirius Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via an auxiliary input adapter. A compatible antenna and a subscription are also required to receive satellite radio programming from Sirius or XM.

Switchable Button Color: The illumination of the 4 main buttons (Source/Power, Band, |<<, and >>|) can be switched to any of 4 colors: Blue, Green, Amber, and Red. When the illumination is set to Blue or Green, the color of the other buttons is Green. When the illumination is set to Amber or Red, the color of the other buttons is Amber.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination dimmer lead. When the unit's dimmer mode has been set to "Auto" and the illumination lead has been connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the "Manual" dimmer mode setting, so the button illumination is dim at all times.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

  • Bass Control:
    • Bass Center Frequency: Select from 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz
    • Bass Band Width: Select from 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
    • Bass Level: Select from -7 to +10
  • Treble Control:
    • Treble Center Frequency: Select from 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz or 15kHz
    • Treble Level: -7 to +7

BBE: BBE makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can select the level of the BBE effect (1, 2, or 3), or turn BBE off. Note: You can set different levels of BBE for each source. BBE is not available for AM radio.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3/WMA files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with constant and variable bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps and WMA files with constant and variable bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps are supported. Discs recorded using Joliet, Romeo, or other ISSO 9660 compliant formats can be played, but file and folder names will not be displayed correctly. Discs containing both standard CD audio and MP3/WMA data can be played; the unit may be set to play only the CD audio tracks or both types of tracks. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Disc and Station Titling: Titles of up to 8 characters in length may be entered for up to 24 radio stations and 18 CDs.

Text/File/Folder Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, or MP3 tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the rotary encoder.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-9847 features a dedicated subwoofer preamp output. The subwoofer output has an independent volume control, and can be turned on or off.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is connected and the built-in amplifier is not used, removing power from the built-in amplifier will improve the sound quality.

CD Changer Controls

Ai-NET Compatible: An optional Ai-NET-compatible 6- or 12-disc CD changer (including MP3 Changers) may be connected to, and controlled by, the CDA-9847. With the KCA-410c Versatile Link Terminal (item # 500KCA410C), you can control multiple changers with this unit.

iPod-Ready: An iPod or iPod Mini can be controlled from this unit when connected via the KCA-420i Alpine Interface Adapter for iPod (item # 500KCA420i). While connected to the head unit, the iPod's battery is charged, and the artist/song title information is displayed on the face of the head unit. The unit's Quick Search feature allows you to search by playlist, album name, artist name, or song title. Random and repeat play functions are also available.

Optional Auxiliary Input: With the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable or KCA-410C Versatile Link Terminal, you can input audio from an auxiliary source unit, such as a TV, VCR or portable unit.

Clock Display Note

Clock Operation: This unit allows you to choose "keyed" or "unit on" clock operation. When the clock has been given display priority and the unit is turned off, the clock will be displayed whenever the ignition key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. If the clock is not given display priority, the clock is not displayed when the unit is off.

My first Alpine casette HU was 14 years ago and I paid $350. At the time, it was well worth it. I can now say the same about this new CD player, althought it only cost $200. The free harness that Crutchfield supplied spliced right into the Alpine harness and when I did the install, the factory plugs slid right together. (all the stuff they sent fit perfect) The actual install on my 1996 S-10 only took an hour, but that was after I spent a half hour wiring the harnesses together. -Much easier on the table than in the dash though.

On to the sound... The HU is great and the available bass and treble controls are a nice touch. CDs do not skip, even in a harsher truck suspension. The radio tuner is better than factory. (in my experience, aftermarket radios' tuners aren't as good)Even with the factory speakers, the radio sounds 10x better than factory. I can't wait to install the new speakers now.

I gave this radio 5 stars because of the available features and because it just sounds great. I would have voted for 4.5 if they had the option simply because the buttons along the bottom are too small and you need to look at the unit to see where to start hitting buttons. Setup was also a bit confusing, but I guess it's because of all the cool features and the need to keep les than 30 buttons on the unit. In any event, I would buy this unit again in a heartbeat.

Nice For The Price.

Written By Big Daddy, Troy, IL on Saturday, July 02, 2005

I have a `98 Honda Accord Ex with stock speakers and have had this unit installed for a little over a month. Install was a breeze thanks to the aid of the supplied instructions from Crutchfield. Overall, this unit is logically set-up and easy to use. I haven't dabbled in MP3 or WMA file writing, yet. The tuner is crystal clear, about the best specs on the market. Same with the CD player. The only things I would like to see made available with this unit are: a remote and speaker-level crossovers. For the quality, I can't complain.

I bought this HU as a replacement for my factory installed one in my 2005 Focus. The package arrived a few days later along with all the parts I needed to install it. I went to the garage and one hour later, I was done. The Master Sheets Crutchfield provides are excellent.

The Alpine is simply amazing. The sound is like nothing I've ever heard. I am hearing parts of songs that I didn't even know were there. The controls are easy to use and it's loaded with features - it did take a little while to get the audio settings 'tweaked', but it's well worth the time - trust me - take the time to get it setup right and you won't be sorry.

I've played regular CDs in it and MP3 CDs. Both sound amazing. It doesn't skip at all.

Buy this deck, you won't be sorry.

After purchasing some Alpine 4x6's and 61/2's to replace my stock speakers in my s-10 i was impressed with the improvment. The sound quility was exceptional, but i could tell the system definatley needed more. After some rather extensive research I decided to go with the Alpine cda-9847 as my deck, after installing a cheap 1000watt amp and 2 10' 1041swe subs, this system sounds incredible!! The best part for me was the fact that i still have less than 1000$ in my system and it just sounds unbelievable!! The clarity and quality even when the subs are pounding is just pure bliss!! I couldnt be happier with my purchase, I wasnt an Alpine man before, but I am definatly an Alpine kinda guy now. Thanks Crutchfield for all the wonderful information on your site, it really helped to make my purchase a smooth one. If im ever asked why i went with Alpine, all i have to do is open my truck door and let them listen. My coworkers are just beside themsleves with the quilty of sound from such a small investment. thanks again Crutchfield and Alpine!!!
Unfortunatley, just like most bass heads, this is only the beginning! There are plans in the works for a subbox behind the seats with 2 Alpine 12's and 2 Alpine 10's with 4or 6 6.5 components across the front with a couple amps hidden!! (awaitng the wifes permission of course)

I replaced an older Aiwa CD receiver with the Alpine CDA-9847 I am completely happy with the clean power level, mp3 capability, and expandable to XM capability. the CD player does not skip even over frost heaves. the 9847 looks great and I like the dark chrome accents. The tuner is the best I have ever used. I would prefer an equalizer but once you get used to the center frequency adjustment you can tune the base and treble to match your system at the volume you prefer. Adding 6.5" speakers from Crutchfield let me use more of that great power.

I paid $200 extra for the Subaru "speaker upgrade" option when we bought this car. What a joke. I've been suffering with the factory setup for a year. Fortunately, it's my wife's, so I don't have to drive it too much. I finally decided to fix the audio quality problem, and link our Delphi SkyFi2 directly to a new HU at the same time. Crutchfield recommended the 9847 and 4 Infinity 6012si's. I also got the remote and the auxiliary input adapter. All I can say is WOW. I had a few install issues, but worked through them with Crutchfield's tech support and now I want to drive that car all the time. Fantastic sound on CD's and MP3's. Great tuner. No FM station searching for the SkyFi2. It looks great in the car, too. I'm thrilled.

Good Full Featured Deck

Written By Lomax, Sunnyvale, CA on Wednesday, June 15, 2005

I purchased this model for my 2003 Nissan 350z and I am most happy.
I chose this model based on feedback I received from posters on a 350z auto forum. I was specifically looking for an iPod compatible deck that was simple to operate and used NO motorized parts.
I am leery of any motorized faceplates due to a reoccurring issue I had with a Kenwood deck a year or two back.
The power of the deck is more than adequate for my smaller interior space and the exterior of the unit is easy to memorize and operate (even at high speeds).
I enjoy the multiple vibrant illumination colors which in my opinion are the best in the industry. The button colors and hue change completely giving the deck a significantly different appearance.
The shipping took a bit longer than anticipated for the deck to arrive but I also ordered the iPod Inet interface device with it. The integration of the iPod interface device was quick and each. I had fun installing this solution.

The packaging was good and the kit/harness worked perfectly for my car. This made the install simple and trouble free. I was impressed with the documentation and instructions included with the unit.

Note: 350z - Navigation owners: The instructions do not include the disassembly of the navigation unit control panel. I did research to find the best way to remove the panel.
Just pry it off to retrieve the screws below the nav screen.

This reciever is awesome. I have put all my CD's and music from my computer onto data discs to play in it, and reads all of the song titles, artists, and album names. Plus the ability to change the button lighting color makes it fully customizable to match my interior, which is red/amber. If want high quality performance with mid-range to low price, this is the one.

Alpine CDA-9847

Written By Daniel, Huntsville, AL on Thursday, July 28, 2005

The sound improvement over my factory 2000 Honda Civic cd player is large, even with just stock speakers. The Dell DJ30 is connected to the auxillary input on the Alpine and I couldn't be happier. If you experience a bit of road noise as I do, and you find that you have trouble hearing distinct voices and instruments in your music (it all sounds like mush!), the Alpine's BBE sound processing resolves this beautifully. My only gripe is a lack of additional equalizer options.
