Eclipse

Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the Eclipse IPC-106

by Tim Sprinkle

Eclipse's iPC-106 interface adapter makes it easy to integrate an iPod into your mobile audio system. Just install the interface box in an out-of-the-way spot, connect it to the CD changer input on your Eclipse stereo, and hook up your iPod.

With the iPC-106 connected to a compatible Eclipse stereo, you can access just about all of the iPod's functions — play/pause, fast forward/rewind, repeat, and random — with the controls on your Eclipse stereo. You'll be able to find the music you want quickly, since album title, artist name, or track information show up on the Eclipse display. The adapter will even charge your iPod while it's connected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Features

Overview: This adapter allows an iPod portable digital music player including the iPod video (5th generation), iPod touch (1st/2nd generation), classic (80/120/160GB) and iPod nano (3rd/4th generation) or iPhone/iPhon3G with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by 2002 or later Eclipse head units that support E-LAN. All the iPod's buttons will be disabled when connected to this adapter and the iPod will be controlled from the receiver.

Note: This adapter will not charge the iPhone3G, iPod touch 2nd generation, or iPod nano 4th generation without the Scosche passPORT (142IFWA). The iPod classic and nano 3rd generation should have the latest version 1.1 or higher installed for compatibility. This version can be downloaded from Apple's website.

Controls: Many 2007 and 2006 Eclipse CD and AVN head units support the iPod controller mode, allowing almost all of the iPod's functions to be operated from the main unit. While connected, the head unit will power the iPod, and charge the iPod's battery. You can perform playlist, album, artist, genre, or song searches. Playback functions include track up/down, fast forward/rewind, track repeat, track random play, and album random play. Display selections include song, album, or artist. If the main unit does not support iPod controller mode, you will have limited control of the iPod, including music advance, repeat play, random play, and text display. On these units, the iPod must be controlled in Changer or SIRIUS mode. The IPC-106 Interface Adapter for iPod is compatible with the following:

    Easy to install!

Written By Frank, San Diego, CA on Thursday, November 12, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ziggy helped me pick out this item to go with an Eclipse AVN-2454 that I had purchased used. The install was very easy, and the owners manual has very clear directions. I particularly liked the portions where the head units are broken down by model numbers and years, which helped identify what the capabilities of my head unit were. I was confused as to how to maneuver with my Ipod, until I decided to read the manual to determined what buttons on the head unit did what. Now I can really enjoy my weekly (5 hour) commutes while listening to my Ipod.

Could work better with the CD-5435

Written By Dan V., Rochester, NY on Thursday, September 10, 2009

Well, I bought this iPC-106 after returning an in-car GPS system I didn't want for Christmas last year. It took a while to get since it was almost never in stock, which is why this review waited so long. Also for Christmas, I received a replacement for my 2nd generation iPod Nano 2GB, a 4th generation iPod Nano 8 GB. Not only does the control system for the iPod lack any useful information (song title or data) unless you switch to CD Changer 4 mode, which my 3-year old CD-5435 seems to dislike staying in once you finally get there (and it takes FOREVER to get there, believe me), it is otherwise difficult to switch between songs if you hit certain buttons on the HU. Not only that, but I have found out that I would have to switch back to my broken 2G Nano just so I can have my iPod charge while I am listening to my music. This makes this interface almost completely useless unless I can find a way to get my old iPod fixed. This interface MAY be worth it if you have a newer HU, but, if you have an older model like I do, forget it. Especially if you have the newest iPod.

Not only that, but there are a lot of cars out there that just don't have much room to hide even the small size of the interface, much less all of the attaching cables for it AND the headunit, such as my 87 Firebird. I currently have the CD HU in the dash with the adaptor all the way out, and the iPC-106 under my center console, and both just BARELY fit.

    IPC-106 W/ AVN5435

Written By Martin, Rockville, MD on Wednesday, July 15, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Issues with the Compatibility with the AVN5435.

There are a few ways that this works, however all of them are "unusable"

    1) - Ipod Plays but nothing shows on the Screen
    2) - Ipod plays with Title on screen but cant change tracks etc...
    3) - Ipod plays with Title on screen and can change tracks
    a) - BUT... You can't search by artist or album
    i) - Must press the track forward / backward button to go to the next track... (ie.. if you want song #300... you have to push track forward 300 times to get to the song can't select artist then song!!!)

I've seen multiple reviews and hope that this one can help clear some things up for people.

Therefore, If you have an Eclipse AVN5435, DO NOT Purchase this product, it is for all intensive purposes not compatible with the AVN5435 and you will be out the shipping costs and still have no Audio Solution. In My Opinion, hook your ipod up to the video in on the head unit and use the iPod controls on the actual iPod, screen on the HU will be blank, but at least you will be able to select your artist / song Etc...

    Eclipse IPC-106

Crutchfield had this unit shipped to my door in under 48 hours! Unit works well once ipod classic (120gb) is reset while connected. Only have your playlist downloaded to ipod classic (120gb), unless you don't mind skipping through entire library of songs you might not be in the mood for.

    NOT WHAT YOU WANT!!!

If you are planning on using this product with the Eclipse AVN 5435, think again. You loose all control of your ipod. You have to control the ipod through the stereo and it has no search feature or any way of scanning songs. I have 5000 songs on my ipod and have to skip one by one to find a song either by artist or song title... that takes forever especially if you disconnect the ipod. it starts back at the first song on the list or the first artist. the best way to hook up an ipod to this head unit is to buy a apple
brand rca cable plug and plug it into the VTR on the unit. you have full control of the ipod and if you have a movie you can watch it through the head unit. Dont buy if you have the AVN5435.

Sounds great, easily installed and hidden in center console. My Eclipse CD3200 controls for Ipod mode are a little confusing. Manual should be studied carefully, don't try to figure it out while driving. Manual on CD3200 could be better written. overall would buy again.

I bought this ipod interface for the cd3100, recieved it quickley via 2nd day air shipping. My first thoughts about this unit were negative, as there were a few people who gave it a poor review. But upon using this unit myself, I'd have to say it's about as nice as alpine's ipod interface. The only setback is you can't jump from album to album when searching such as that of alpine. But that's my only gripe. I like the fact that once the ipod is connected the headunit automatically turns on. Great product in my opinion.

    Warning for ipod Classic Owners!!!!

Written By Wedge, Santa Barbara CA on Monday, August 18, 2008

This unit worked great until I updated the software on my ipod classic 160gb to version 1.1.2. Then it stopped working. I have two of these ipods and two vehicles with this unit installed. Now I can only scan songs, artists etc but it won't play.
This is an Apple issue but if you want a big ipod for full 16 bit or lossless quality don't buy this adapter until we see if the next update fixes it. Also, you can find older software for the ipod but it is a pain to find and install. I just hope apple fixes this or Eclipse comes out with an upgrade.

    Good but not great

Written By Jonathan, Westfield, NJ on Monday, March 31, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product does connect my IPOD Classic to my CD-3200, but none of these IPOD interfaces are as intuitive or easy to use as the IPOD itself. It connects, but the CD-3200 has a weird system of
menus, sub-menus, and returns that are needed to access the layers of the IPOD menus. In addition, the response time is somewhat slow.

Bottom line, itconnects, sounds good, charges the IPOD, but is more difficult to use than the IPOD itself. Eclipse's manuals are very poorly written and controls are counter-intuitive.

I have a avn5495 and this unit provides random feature, next and previous track, and limited title info through a b/a setting. It only plays the playlist that you were using before you plug in your ipod though, so if you want to listen to all songs make sure you select all songs on your ipod before you plug it in to the unit.

Don't even consider a CD changer!

Written By John, Detroit, MI on Monday, September 17, 2007

I connected this to the CD7100 receiver (2007 model) and it works great! For just a little more than a CD changer you can get an iPod and this interface and take your entire music collection everywhere! Installation is a snap, the sound is great and it's easy to locate tracks even with the tiny screen on the CD7100 receiver.

    Eclipse IPC-106

Written By Sherman, Los Angeles, Ca on Wednesday, May 30, 2007

I have the AVN6610 and I must say that the iPod interface is great. I cannot speak on the older headunits but with the AVN6610 that can take full advantage of the iPod controls I can access all features such as playlist, album, artist, or the complete playlist. It charges the iPod while in use and starts playing seconds as soon as the radio is on, comparable to reading from the cd player. Installation is very straight forward and there is enough wire to have it placed in either the glove box or the center console. Overall this is a great add-on accessory to an Eclipse headunit for the price.

Does what it's supposed to do, makes controlling iPod very easy!

Written By Alan, Fremont, CA on Wednesday, July 19, 2006

This thing is pretty much all it's cracked up to be. No real complaints. I just hook up my iPod to my AVN6600 and everything just WORKS. I can browse songs, playlists, artists with ease. I can repeat, random, or repeat entire albums as well. No big surprises at all. There were a couple gripes I had...

    1) Not a big gripe, but as someone else mentioned, scrolling through songs can be a little slow. Not that bad at all, but compared to controlling the iPod itself, there is a big difference.

    2) A slightly bigger gripe.... Apparently, when you browse by artist and select an artist, you get a list of albums by the artist, not songs. You have to then select the album to get to a particular song by the artist. If the ID3 tag for a particular song by an atrist doesn't contain a value in the album field, you will NOT see the song under a generic "ALL" album like you see on the iPod itself, it has to have an album associated with it. Basically you're screwed and can't pick a particular song unless you browse by song.

That's about it, overall it works very well, those two gripes caused me to give it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Oh yeah and the final gripe, the price dropped by 70% only a month after I bought it! >:(

    Works beautifully with an AVN6600

Written By spaceman599, New York, NY on Monday, June 26, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this unit to accompany my AVN6600 that I bought at the same time. I bought the IPC-106 even thought there were mixed reviews of it. I think most of the negative comments seem to be because of issues related to Sirius. I don't intend to pay for radio so those issues don't apply to me. In my case however, the AVN6600 and the IPC-106 works marvelously well together. Song information is displayed with full text, searching for artist/album/playlist is fast and easy, browsing my song library is easy, songs play the instant I select them without any perceivable lag, the user interface in very intuitive, audio quality is fantastic...I honestly don't know what more can be desired. I have no idea why Crutchfield says "limited playback and display functions with CD2000 and the AVN6600 video receiver". I can't comment of the CD2000, but if you have an AVN6600 this is a must have!

Works, but get the next generation if you can

Written By Tim, Los Angeles, CA on Friday, June 23, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finally understand what other reviewers are talking about in regards to this ipod adapter. I have the AVN5435 and my review is based on the time I have spent getting this to work with my 5G ipod in Sirius mode. I feel the Cons I listed are probably outweighted by the Pros.

    Pros:
ID tags of current song displayed in Sirius mode.
    Sound quality is good.
    Fairly responsive.
    Charges ipod.

    Cons:
Cannot browse entire ipod library (need to forward one song at a time).
Need to setup playlists prior to connecting to system to get it to be useful (unless you want to just play your entire ipod at random)
    No steering wheel controls.
