On-Q

Our take on the On-Q In-Wall/In-Ceiling Wireless Access Point

by Marshall Chase

Unobtrusive wireless access point

Extend your home network with this wireless access point from On-Q. Its versatile design allows it to blend seamlessly into your décor. The wireless access point (WAP) comes with mounting hardware for two different installation methods. It can be mounted in a three-gang electrical box using the round cover for in-ceiling installation, or in a single-gang electrical box using the small rectangular cover for in-wall installation. Either method yields an unobtrusive appearance, resembling either a ceiling-mounted smoke detector or in-wall speaker. The access point is powered by an included module that resides in your On-Q structured wiring enclosure, near your modem or router. The module connects to the access point via CAT-5e cable and to the modem or router via an included CAT-5e patch cable.

This wireless access point features LEDs that indicate data, wireless, and power status. A reset button allows you to restart the connection.

    Features

Wireless Access Point: Integrating the latest in wireless technology, the 802.11n Wireless Access Point (N-WAP) provides a reliable wireless network solution for today's homeowners. With built in IEEE 802.11b/g/n wireless network capability, the N-WAP allows any computer and wireless-enabled network client to connect without additional cabling. With connection speeds of up to 300Mbps, the N-WAP flawlessly supports even the most bandwidth intensive wireless applications such as streaming video services and online gaming without the loss of performance. The N-WAP comes with both in-ceiling and in-wall mounting brackets, plus covers included for maximum install versatility; as well as a 48-volt power supply and Power over Ethernet (PoE) injector.

802.11n Technology w Dual Antennas: 802.11n technology with dual antennas provide ultra-high-speed wireless (up to 300Mbps) with improved range and expanded coverage area. It is also backward compatible with 802.11b/g standard (11Mbps/54Mbps). Data Rates:

    • 11n Mode: up to 300 Mbps
    • 11g Mode: 6/9/12/18/24/36/48/54 Mbps
    • 11b Mode: 1/2/5.5/11 Mbps

Web-Based GUI: Using the included "DA-Discovery.exe" CD-ROM software disc, the N-WAP integrates a web-based graphical user interface (Setup Wizard) that can cover most configurations and machine status monitoring. Via a standard web browser, you can configure and check machine status from anywhere around the world.

DHCP: The N-WAP is designed as a DHCP device, which means it automatically gets an IP address from the router it is attached to. It is defaulted to AP mode (meaning it acts as a wireless Access Point for wireless devices around the home, like laptops) and those devices also get their IP address from the router that the N-WAP is attached to. No configuration is required for basic operation.

Note: Besides AP Mode, there are three other Operational Modes that the N-WAP can be configured to support; Client Mode, Repeater Mode, and Router Mode.

Network Security: To secure the wireless communication, the N-WAP supports most up-to-date encryption: WEP, WPAPSK and WPA2-PSK. In addition, the N-WAP supports WPS configuration with PBC/PIN type for users to connect to a secured wireless network easily.

Note: By default, there is no security configured, which means anyone within range (even outside your home) can access your internet connection. To restrict access (configure security) or operate in a different mode other than AP, you must log onto the N-WAP. To do this you must know its IP address, and we have provided a utility program for you to find the unit's IP address.

LED Indicators: The unit features 3 LEDs to indicate Ethernet, Power, and WiFi operation.

    LED Color Sate Description
Ethernet Green Solid Green Power Present
    Blinking Green Ethernet Active
    Power Blue/Orange Blue Power OK
    Solid Orange Initializing
    Blinking Orange Signal Survey
    WiFi Green/Red Solid Green Connected
    Blinking Green Streaming Session
    Red No WiFi Signal

In-Wall/In-Ceiling Mounting Options: The N-WAP is supplied with mounting hardware for two different installation methods. It can be mounted in a three-gang electrical box using the round cover for in-ceiling installation, or in a single-gang electrical box using the small rectangular cover for in-wall installation. The N-WAP is unobtrusive in look similar to an in-wall speaker or smoke detector, letting it blend right in to any decor.
