But did you know it can also double as a monitor for a rear-view camera? The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera kit contains a camera, a transmitter, and a receiver. The 2.4GHz transmitter and receiver combo sends the images from the camera mounted on your rear license plate to your Magellan navigator. You'll see hazards, blind spots, and other dangers behind your vehicle, so you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

The durable waterproof and dust-resistant camera comes mounted on a bar that fits easily on your rear license plate. You can adjust the angle of the camera up to 45 degrees for optimum viewing. The weatherproof transmitter connects to the camera and taps into your car's backup lights. When you shift into reverse, the camera automatically transmits to the receiver, which is connected to your Magellan navigator in its mount — no need to route wires throughout the length of your vehicle. While your Magellan GPS navigator guides you when driving, this wireless back-up camera system provides a measure of safety as you begin and end your trip. The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System includes a rear-view camera with integrated license plate mount, a wireless transmitter, wireless receiver, and 12-volt power adapter.

    Note: The wireless back-up camera has a range of approximately 45'. Great for most cars, vans, trucks, and small trailers.

    Rear View Camera: The rear-view camera provides a mirror output, so whatever the driver sees on the right side is what is on the right side of the vehicle. The back-up camera employs a CMOS imaging sensor with a resolution of 640 x 480. It provides a wide angle view of 120° horizontal x 100° vertical, so you can see people and objects coming into view behind your vehicle. The rear-view camera mounts to your vehicle's license plate and connects to the included wireless transmitter.

    Wireless Transmitter: The back-up camera mounts on your vehicle's license plate with the 2.4GHz wireless transmitter located in the truck or other protected area of your vehicle. The wireless transmitter is weather proof and water resistant (IPX4 rating). The back-up camera attaches to the transmitter via a DC cord and composite video cable. The transmitter also requires a power/ground connection to your vehicle's reverse light circuit. The wireless transmitter will wirelessly transmit the back-up camera's video signal to the system's wireless receiver.

    Wireless Receiver: The 2.4GHz wireless receiver mounts at the front of your vehicle, next to your compatible Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The wireless receiver connects to your Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator via a 3.5mm A/V connector. The wireless receiver then receives the back-up camera's video signal wirelessly via the connected wireless transmitter and displays the signal on your connected Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator's screen.

    12-Volt Power Adapter: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System includes an 12-Volt/cigarette lighter power adapter to power the wireless receiver and your Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The 12-volte power adapter features two mini-USB (type-B) connectors.

    License Plate Mount: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera includes an integrated license plate mount that easily attaches to your vehicle's license plate. The back-up camera features a dustproof and waterproof housing (IP67 rating) to protect it against wet & dusty conditions. The camera can be adjusted downward to 45° for truck and SUV mounting.

    Note: The license plate mount has two mounting holes spaced between 6.75" to 7.375" apart.

    Auto Rear-View Mode: When you put your vehicle in reverse, your Magellan GPS navigator will switch from navigation mode to rear view mode, allowing you to see what is behind you; including children, pets, and toys. In order for this feature to work, the wireless transmitter's power and ground wires must be connected to your vehicle's reverse light circuit.

    3.5mm A/V Output: Because the Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera system is fitted with a male 3.5mm A/V output connector, it is also compatible with other video systems that have a 3.5mm A/V input.

    When it works it works well. The camera comes in and out at times. It will give you a glimpse if whats behind you when it goes in and out though. I still like the product.

    I purchased this Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera for large SUV. It works great with my Magellan RM-1700. Installation was fairly simple and took about 30 minutes. Everything needed for installation was included in the box. Included was a 4 inch jumper that I was informed would be required for the RM-1700, however my unit performs perfectly without using the jumper. The video is crystal clear, and has a very sharp image. A great safety tool for my vehicle.
    Pros:
    Easy installation, good instructions, device works flawlessly. Is activated when vehicle is in reverse gear.
    Cons:
    Only issue is that the GPS must be in active mode for camera to work. Does not come on if GPS is in standby mode.

    The idea with the backup camera with the GPS is awesome. BUT.... the back up camera is wireless, so it does not come in that clear. Not good in low lighting

    No Distance Scale Lines

    Good Camera but image does not display distance scale lines. Any obstruction initially appears much more distant that it actually is until very close so it is misleading how close you are to the object until it is almost too late. Otherwise a great camera.

    This camera does not work in the dark.. I got it for my wife who can't see to back out of a tree-lined driveway at night. Mail boxes are also a problem. Other cameras have infrared lighting for night use.
    Pros:
    Adequate for daytime use.
    Cons:
    No good for nighttime use. Occassionly doesn't come on when shifting to reverse.

    I installed this on my wife's Yukon XL coupled with the Magellan 1700 GPS. The convenience of having a single screen that doubles as both a GPS and backup camera is great, but the quality of the image is terrible.

    The image is very choppy as if I'm viewing a series of still images. But the biggest issue I have is the lag. When backing up there is slight delay as to where I am vs what's displayed on the screen. I feel that if an animal (or one of my kids!) were to run behind the vehicle and I was focused solely on the camera it could be too late.

    Crutchfield, as always, is fantastic however. The product was on back order with no ETA for shipment but because of a discount I went ahead and ordered it. I still had it within a week.
    Pros:
    Convenient to use a single screen. Fairly simple wiring. Tilting camera allows you to adjust your angle.
    Cons:
    Poor image quality. Lag in the image. Choppy image. Delay in image even appearing after putting vehicle in reverse.

    The Price was the best with coupon from coupon.com. Had back windows in van tinted very dark. You can also see down low behind you so you don't hit a curb or the like.
    Pros:
    Works very well. Nice wide view. Easy to install.
    Cons:
    It will not work until GPS picks up Satellite signal. can be a problem if your in a harry to back up.

    I order this camera to connect to my new Magellan 1700. I like the idea of wireless for ease of installation. After I got it, The manual says professional installation recommended. I am very handy man so I did the installation myself. It took me about an hour. What a disappointment. First the quality of camera is terrible day or night. Also it seems the wireless units (receiver and transmitter) do not communicate too well. I keep losing the signal so the rear view video goes off and on. I though may be there is something wrong with my unit so I call Crutchfield and they send me a new replacement. The new unit works as bad. Do not waste your money. It is over prices and does not work. I am sending both unit back.
    Cons:
    Bulky receiver and too many annoying wires for wireless unit.
