Great digital music options for iPod® fans, Android™ fans — and everyone else

The 'NR414 gives you an iPod connection right up front. Just plug its cable into the USB slot and let the good tunes roll! The receiver bypasses the iPod's "made-for-earbuds" audio circuitry in favor of its own high-quality Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter and cleaner signal processing, for better sound.

The app also lets you stream audio wirelessly from your Android device.

You can choose from a wide variety of online streaming services including SiriusXM Internet radio, Pandora® Internet radio, Rhapsody®, and more. Add to all this the built-in V-tuner for thousands more stations, and you've got plenty of listening options to keep your ears happy for a long, long time.

The end of input roulette

Onkyo's InstaPrevue™ technology shows you a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected via HDMI. You no longer have to remember that your gaming console is connected to Port 3, or your Blu-ray player to Port 1, for example. Just find the source you want and click.

      Audio Features

5.1ch AV Receiver: The Onkyo TX-NR414 features a 5-channel amplifier rated at 80 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.7%, driving 2 channels) and a mono subwoofer preamp output.

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.

H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.

Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Control adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

Burr-Brown DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters): This receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Onkyo TX-NR414 is equipped with a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR414 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

      • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
      • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
      • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
      • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
      • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
      • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
      • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
      • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Direct Mode: In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR414 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

      • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
      • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
      • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Speaker Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver allows you to manually setup your system's speaker configuration.

      • Speaker Size: You can set Large or Small for your front speakers; Large, Small or None for your surround and center speakers; and Yes or No for subwoofer.
      • Speaker Distance: The front speaker distance can be set from 1 to 30' in 1' increments. The center and subwoofer settings can be up to 5' more or 5' less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30' max). The settings for the surround left and right speakers are each individually adjustable, and they may be adjusted up to 5' more or 15' less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30' max).
      • Adjustable Crossover: This receiver has a built-in high-pass crossover for any of the speakers set to Small. This setting is available when the subwoofer is set to Yes. The frequencies that you can choose from are 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200 Hz. Frequencies lower than the set crossover point are output by the subwoofer.
      • Speaker Levels: You can manually adjust the level of individual speakers between -12dB and +12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.

Bass & Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR414 from -10 to +10 dB.

CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.  This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

      • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. All four digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
      • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for all speaker connections - Front, Center, and Surround. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual).
      • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

      Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR414 has six assignable HDMI v1.4 inputs and one HDMI v1.4 output for connecting Blu-ray/DVD players, Satellite/Cable boxes, Game Consoles, and other video components to your TV. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run and additional analog or digital cable. The HDMI inputs can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video signals to a HDTV. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1ch), and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS, etc.). Each HDMI input is assignable.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR414's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes:

      • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
      • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
      • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

InstaPrevue: InstaPrevue technology provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected to the receiver via HDMI. As a result, you can preview audio/video streams coming from up to 5 HDMI inputs previously assigned to input selectors on your HDMI connected TV. Even with multiple components connected to receiver through HDMI, you can easily switch between inputs as their previews are displayed on a single screen on your television. You can even use the InstaPrevue feature for Picture-in-Picture. You can specify the number of preview thumbnails, as well as their positioning on-screen.

Note: If no video signal are present, the thumbnails will be filled in black. With 3D video signals, the image may not be properly rendered on the preview thumbnails of InstaPrevue.

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 400 milliseconds, in 20 millisecond steps.

Component Video: There are 2 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 100MHz.

Front-Panel AV Input: The Onkyo TX-NR414 is equipped with a front-panel audio/video input which consists of a composite video terminal and stereo audio RCA jacks.

      Network Functions

Network-Ready: The Onkyo TX-NR414 A/V receiver is network-ready, which means you can connect it to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music files stored on your computer or media server. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't tell you everything that Onkyo can do because I'm still learning all of the options. I hooked this up to 4 Bose 201 series speakers with a Polk 10' powered sub in my 800 +/- square foot man cave and it rocks. I'm a music fanatic and i'm more than happy with the Onkyo's performance. The only negative I have so far is there's no 3.5 jack on the front but otherwise nice product for the price. Haven't hooked up the TV yet but the music thumps! Crutchfield was easy to order and quick shipping.

Networked reciever, the way to go

Written By garyp, Jonestown, Tx on Sunday, May 12, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally bought a Onkyo networked receiver for my lakehouse. I really enjoyed being able to listen to internet radio and controlling the different zones through my Iphone. I ripped all of my cd collection to a server and can also listen to that while out on a deck or even in my garage. My grandkids can be watching a movie while I sit out on the deck listening to my music. I now own four Onkyo networked receivers (2 at each house). They were very easy to set up and the Onkyo Remote app Is a free download. They all possess great sound and are operationally well thought out. The nr414 went in the detached garage at my main house. I added usb wireless adapter to connect to the network. It all worked perfectly.
      Pros:
Much better quality than I was expecting, being on the low end of Onkyos networked receiver line up.
      Cons:
      None that I have found.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had recently purchased a new HD TV and needed a new receiver that had HDMI inputs. I had an older Sony receiver that did not have HDMI. I also liked the pass through option that this receiver had so the TV can be played without turning on the receiver if I wanted. The sound on this Onkyo is superb, much better than my old Sony ever was. The clarity is very good also. I am somewhat hard of hearing and often have trouble understanding conversations on TV but when playing the sound through the receiver I am understanding a lot more. Receiver was easy to set up and the instructions were very clear. The only problem I had was finding remote codes for my blue ray player. The codes were not on the CD manual. I had to go to the Onkyo website and download another manual for my machine which had the codes.
      Pros:
Great sound. Clear crisp vocals. Easy setup.
      Cons:
Missing remote codes on CD manual

So far...so wonderful! Bought this receiver to upgrade from an older model (pre-HDMI) that I also purchased from Crutchfield many years ago. I am very pleased so far with its flexibility and performance. Running a Blu-ray, PS3, Mac, Wii and USB devices on this and everything is sounding great. Thanks Onkyo for the product and to Crutchfield for the service. :) What a great combination!
      Pros:
6 HDMI connections, countless combinations of hook ups, good and powerful to drive my Infinity surround sound system, and what a great price!
      Cons:
Would prefer spring lock speaker connections but this is a SMALL con.

The impression is that this was going to be an all-nighter to set up. Nope. The HDMI makes it a whiz even for an old generation type. The control looks complicated but really is self explanatory, easy to use.
      Pros:
Easy set up, PDF instructions on disk were clear, very little tinkering needed to refine to exact needs. Oh, and the price was better than the Yamaha I was considering
      Cons:

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very good receiver. Onkyo is always good, it has all of the features you need to hook anything up to it. Lots of hdmi hookups. It doesn't have a ton of power but all the features you could ever need. For a lot less money you get a high end feel.
      Pros:
Lots of features, hdmi, apps, internet, 3d. Very good price for all that you get.
      Cons:
Not as much power as other products but for the price, it's worth it.

Can't beat it for the price

Written By Jason, Colorado on Wednesday, August 08, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This reciever is easily the best choice for those on a budget that doesn't allow for a higher end model. I am very happy with it. With that said, if you do have the budget to go for at least the 515... do it and don't look back. One of the featuers I didn't think I'd miss and I find a huge downfall now is that this reciever requires you set the audio settings manually or use specific presets (for movies, music, etc...). Higher end Onkyo's have an auto tuning function that personally I feel is very valuable after having tried to tune this myself and can't find a real sweet spot. Keep in mind this does not affect movies on DVD or Blu-Ray that have Dolby, or DTS, or something like that, since the reciever has a processor for that digital audio. So my gripe applies mainly to music/tv.
      Pros:
Best for the budget for sure, looks good, sounds good, solid unit, easy menu's, updating firmware was simple.
      Cons:
The one feature this lacks compared to the higher end recievers that I feel is crucial is the auto audio tuning.

I am not that good with this stuff and this unit is so user friendly. Hooked it up in 20 minutes and the sound is awesome. The picture on my LG smart tv even improved. great oomph through my Polk Audio RT 2000i's and Yamaha center channel as well as Yamaha surrounds on the stands. Sounds awesome. Cable music is so clear. I will hang on to this baby till it blows up in my face. Don't hesitate, and the Crutchfield team is great to work with Harley was my sales person, and love him.

      Go for it with confidence!!

I recieved this unit in the time frame indicated. I replaced a Yamaha 1100 that I bought in 1998. It is a very good unit. This unit took me around 1/2 hour to get in place, what a snap setting up. The unit is very user friendly, I never had to use the cd that came with it. The sound is spectacular. I built in a 5.1 speaker system around 5 years ago and it sounds great. The unit powers the most important part of the system. Yes guys, don't cut yourself short on the Sub and the Center channel. If you get two quality items you will be very happy. Go all HDMi with upgraded pearl cables and the definition will really enhance your video. I put in the DVD of Santana and Wow! So.... I highly recommend the Onkyo product. I may be looking at the higher end unit just for my listening area. Thumbs up to The crew at Crutchfield. You guys are tops in my opinion. Cheers!
      Pros:
Sound quality, ease if setup, menus on screen very easy to use.
      Cons:
      Not a thing

      Onkyo TX NR414

Written By Anonymous, DelBoca Vista Phase III on Thursday, June 14, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this at a great sale price to repalce the Onkyo I bought in 1996, which just finally gave up the ghost. I really liked the richness of the sound from that unit, and this new one doesn't dissapoint. I've been very happy so far with the unit, setup was fairly straightforward jsut a bit of a snag on watching cable/UVerse through the unit, until a reread the detaisl regarding having to connect the TV's DIgital Audio coax output to the Receivers input.
      Pros:
easy to understand setup, unit comes with cable labels, USB input with Ipod/phone controls on screen via remote control or front panel, sound, price
      Cons:
manual comes on CD so goign abck and forth to PC to read and check things was a pain, not an issue witha laptop I guess. Front panel is dark black, and controls are hard to see, somewhat alleviated by using the remote control.

      Impressive so far

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife and I have had this receiver for 1 week so far using as a 2 channel stereo only. It brings our Polk bookshelf speakers to life with a robust presence that only a high quality, high current amp can do. We are planning to ad a 3-D, WI-FI blu ray player soon to enjoy mind blowing home theater.
      Pros:
relatively easy set up and we LOVE the sound.
      Cons:
none so far. We just hope as with anything mass produced these days that Onkyo's quality is as good as they claim.

      Came defective

Written By TomO, Wichita, KS on Monday, June 04, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm sure it was just a case of the occasional defective item. My receiver came stuck in 'headphone' mode. From the first time it was powered on the only sound that came from it was from the headphone jack. Even when the headphone plug was not engaged the headphone icon stayed lit and no sound sent to the speakers. I'm giving this three stars because I'm guessing it was just a problem with mine and overall crutchfield is awesome. Returns are easy and pretty painless.
