Sennheiser

Our take on the Sennheiser HD 800

by Dave Bar
Sennheiser HD 800

Hear your music like never before

When you slip on Sennheiser's HD 800s, you'll hear intensely realistic, natural sound — so real, in fact, that it's as if you're hearing your music straight from the source. That's because the HD 800s use Sennheiser's new driver technology, along with premium materials and exceptional build quality, to reproduce sound as faithfully and accurately as possible. You'll hear deep bass, rich midrange, sparkling highs, and more detail in your music than ever before.

Innovative design for high-definition sound

The HD 800s feature a specially designed ring radiator driver to re-create the clearest sound possible, while eliminating distorting resonances. They'll reveal the subtle details in your favorite recordings, from the sound of a mallet hitting the membrane of a bass drum to the quick breath of a singer before a solo. The open backs of the earcups prevent unwanted vibrations from the coverings from tainting the sound.

Exploded headphone view

An exploded view of the specially designed drivers.

Audiophiles take note: the drivers are uniquely positioned to send sound waves to your ears at a 45° angle. Since sound rarely ever takes a straight path to reach our ears, the slight angle helps create a spatial effect for a more natural listening experience. So, unlike ordinary headphones that box the music inside your head, the HD 800s present every instrument as if you're sitting in the audience at a live concert.

Sound waves

The drivers are uniquely positioned to send sound sound waves to your ears at a 45° angle.

Quality materials, impeccable craftsmanship

Each pair of HD 800s is assembled by hand at Sennheiser's headquarters in Germany using only the finest materials. The drivers are encased in stainless steel, and the plush earpads are made of high-quality microfiber fabric. The headband uses layers of metal and plastic for added durability, and to help damp vibration. The cable's high-quality, oxygen-free copper center conductor is specially tuned and shielded to faithfully deliver the audio signal from your equipment to the headphones.

From the review Sennheiser HD 800 headphones: in a class of their own

"What I actually experienced was the most detailed and spacious sound I had ever heard from my music. I heard a wider soundstage than normal, but it was still a continuous sound from left to right. I found [the] level of detail in the sound exciting, as it's precisely what I would have heard in a live performance. It gave the recording real presence."

Best Sound I've Heard in Headphones

Written By Paul L., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Saturday, February 02, 2013

I auditioned these cans compared to the highly reviewed NAD headphones. Both sounded great however the Sennheiser was in another league. I use these at night when my wife is asleep and never feel cheated in sound quality over my PSB speakers. After listening to a number of high end cans these are clearly the best. I wrestled with the price for some time. I mean this much for headphones!!! But honestly the sound quality is really important to me and these puppies deliver in spades. I listen to vinyl, DVD Audio, SCAD and other high resolution audio and these were essential. They are also amazing for movies and TV. I look forward to late night listening/viewing with these headphones where before I had to keep the volume down now I crank it up and sacfifice nothing in fidelity. They are also the most comfotable headphones I have worn. Be advised they are not noise cancelling nor are they personal headphones so those people in the room with you will hear them at a very low volume.
    Pros:
    Outstanding Sound,
    Cons:
    None

    HD800 vs HD600 w/ modified cable

Written By Dave W., Excelsior, MN on Saturday, June 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Comparing stock HD800 vs an HD600 w/ Stefan AudioArt E-Series cable. While HD800 is obviously very, very good in sound quality, so far I'm not finding the extra >$1k worth it. My Little Dot MK VIII SE has a little problem driving, volume must almost be max'ed. The HD800 is perhaps a bit clinical ... I've had no goosebump moments as yet. The HD600 w/ modified cable is indeed a worthy competitor. With my gear, the extra price is perhaps not justified.
    Pros:
Soundwise, very accurate SQ across the spectrum. Comfort-wise, I find them comfortable, even for extended sessions.
    Cons:
Bass is a little less than my modified HD600's, but better defined. Top end is maybe ever so slightly hot, but could just be source.

    Elephant's cans

Written By Jetvart, New York on Sunday, February 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like other reviewers here, I have no means to compare them with other headphones in their price range and like others, I also found them to sound better then Sennheiser HD 650. Unfortunately, not everything is better. The cans are huge and heavy, they feel more like helmet, then headphones. They are not secure on my head, if I bend over they slide little before my ears would stop them from falling down. I have to keep my head upright and the headband on top of my head. Definitely not the cans for head-bangers. The adjustment is so loose, I need to readjust them every time I put them on. And the cable kink. For those who wear glasses: If you try to take the HD 800 down by one hand, you glasses will go too:) I'll give the sound 5 stars and comfort of use 2. And there is the price. I have no idea, if the price was influenced by the many makers of replacement cable for HD 650 and obvious willingness of consumers to pay more. If was a manufacturer and I see people pay for cable to my headphones the same price, as they paid for the headphones including the original cable, I would probably see my product as under priced and for the next one, rise the price considerably.
    Pros:
    sound
    Cons:
price, unsecure, cable kink, size and weight

    Sennheiser HD 800

Written By Howard, Ijamsville, Md on Thursday, November 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought they had a very even balance with the bass reproduced at believable levels and the highs, such as hi-hat cymbals, etc. almost believable, but not quite. Staging is about the same as the 600 series. These won't replace a really great speaker for reproduction. While I think they sound better than any $1400 speakers I've heard, I think from a materials stand, they should be less.

For anyone wondering whether they are appreciably better than the HD-650, the answer is yes. Whether they are worth approx $900 more is up to the individual.

Also, as mentioned by Edward in Bridgewater, they are not private. You wouldn't want to use them on an airplane or anywhere that you wouldn't want to disturb those around you.
    Pros:
    Sound Comfort
    Cons:
Very minor point, but they could have come with a mini adapter. They can barely be driven to proper levels with an iPod or similar device, but it still would have been nice. Sennheiser does supply one with their 600 series.

Great sound, but not very private.

Written By Edward, Bridgewater, NJ on Wednesday, September 23, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these the day they were available from Crutchfield to replace my aging headset. If you are looking for a wonderfully light, full sounding, comfortable, price is no option headset look no further. The bass knows no limits and the trebles are clear and defined. I powered mine off of a Denon PAC pre-amplifier and was impressed that the headphones needed no tonal correction whatsoever. The one drawback that mattered to me most was the level of residual sound that the headset puts off. My wife complained that even at 2 rooms away she could still hear my headphones and was keeping her awake, oh-oh. Playing them through my stereo while watching TV provoked some stern looks as the headphone noise was competing with the television speaker, bummer. So, after living with them and enjoying the quality, I had come to the realization these are not a good choice if privacy is wanted. Anyone in the same room will hear the headphones so if that is an issue I recommend passing on these.
