Our take on the Bose® AE2 audio headphones

by David Brown

Engineered for performance. Designed for comfort.

Whether you're kicking back at home or listening on the go, the Bose® AE2 audio headphones provide superior sound, extraordinary comfort, and a stylish design. The Bose TriPort® acoustic headphone structure lets the AE2s faithfully reproduce deep, full bass, clear highs, and smooth sound throughout the entire audio spectrum. Their performance can uncover subtleties in your tunes you may have never noticed before, even with long-familiar tracks — the delicate swish of brushes on a brass cymbal, or the reverberations echoing off the back wall in a concert hall.

Take 'em along wherever you roam

You'll love the lightweight, compact design. The earcups feature soft cushions that fit gently around your ears so you can enjoy hours of listening at a time. And the headphone cord attaches to just one earcup, so you won't have to deal with tangles. A handy fold-flat design with a collapsible headband makes it easy to store and transport your headphones in the supplied carry bag.

Highlights:

  • comfortable, lightweight, around-ear fit
  • TriPort® acoustic headphone structure for powerful bass and clearer sound
  • compact, fold-flat earcups and collapsible headband for greater portability
  • detachable 66" cord with a 3.5mm male connector for your audio device
  • carry bag
  • weight: 5 oz.
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Overview: The Bose AE2 (around-ear) audio headphones let you hear smoother audio throughout the entire frequency range from full lows to clear highs. The Bose AE2 audio headphones can enhance your listening experience at home and on the go from your favorite audio sources, including your portable digital music player and laptop computer.

TriPort Acoustic Structure: The Bose AE2 headphones, with enhanced, proprietary TriPort acoustic headphone structure, deliver sound reproduction that many conventional headphones can't match. The TriPort technology allows you to enjoy deeper, richer lows from a compact headphone design. The TriPort design helps produce a quality audio performance from these light-weight, Around-Ear headphones.

Bose Acoustic Equalization: Bose acoustic equalization fine-tunes the frequency response of the around-ear headphones for exceptional audio performance for low, mid, and high frequencies.

Around-Ear Headphone Design: The Bose AE2 headphones feature a comfortable around-ear fit with pivoting, angled earcups. The Bose AE2 headphones feature soft cushions that provide an acoustic seal between the headphones and the user's head, enhancing both performance and comfort. The improved ear cushions, in both design and materials, give you a softer more comfortable feel. As a result, AE2 headphones can provide hours of comfortable listening.

Note: Not designed for noise reduction.

Padded Adjustable Headband: The adjustable, cushioned headband has been redesigned to distribute weight more evenly across the top of the head. The sturdy design features soft cushion for added comfort. The adjustable headband allows approximately three inches of adjustment in length.

Detachable, Single Audio Cable: The 5.5' audio cable attaches on a single earcup for greater freedom of movement and less tangling, and detaches for convenient storage. The detachable cable is terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector which plugs into your audio device. The connector which plugs into the headphone is a male 2.5mm connector.

Note: The headphones do not include a 1/4" headphone adapter.

Fold-Flat Design: The Bose AE2 headphones rotate to fold flat, allowing for easy storage and transport in the included carry pouch.

Note: Only folds flat one way.

Drawstring Cloth Pouch: The Bose Around-Ear headphones come supplied with a drawstring cloth pouch for storing or transporting the headphones.

Great Headphones

Written By Mike, San Marcos, Ca on Saturday, June 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As soon as I tried them on and started listening to music that I already had downloaded to my IPad I was most impressed. It was like suddenly having a new library of music. Everything sounded so much better. These headphones are also light in weight and very comfortable to wear for hours at a time. I would not hesitate to recommend the Bose AE2 - a Big Bang for the dollar.

Sound and Comfort

Bose AE2 Headphones

Written By BIg Dog, Page, AZ on Friday, February 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones are comfortable, light weight, and while not noise cancelling, do provide good isolation while still keeping you connected with your surroundings. Personally, I much prefer the "over the ear" design rather than the "on ear" design.. I was also pleased that this model is available without the "in cord controls". The sound quality is very good - very open and expanded and works great with my I-Pod Classic. The single side cord helps prevent tangles and while it is detachable, it is a little "flimsy" and is proprietary so cannot be replaced with a generic cable. The white model looks great (more of a light gray color.) I wasted a lot of time researching quality headphones for my I-Pod and finally decided on the AE-2. Are there "better" headphones out there? Yes, probably but most of us will never hear the difference. Are there "better" value products available? Yes, Bose products are a little pricy. There are probably cheaper headphones out there that are just as "good" as the Bose AE2, but my advice is do yourself a favor - get the AE2 - you won't regret spending the extra money.
Pros:
Sound quality Comfort
Cons:
For the price, Bose should include a quality carrying case instead of a cloth bag. Engineered in USA - made in China

Light, Comfortable and Crisp Sound

Written By Nick, Texas on Monday, February 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have tried many different brands of the Around-Ear headphones and I should have stayed with Bose. The Klipsch headphones are great but are very bass heavy with mid level treble and mid-ranges and are very tight on your head. The Bower-Wilkerson headphones sound okay and the comfort level is acceptable. Dont waste your money on Beats headphones. Your basically paying for a rappers name and Monster Cables wire. On to Bose... These are by far the most comfortable headphones Ive owned in quite some time. I had an older pair of noise-canceling headphones but after many years of traveling and abuse, the cord going into the headphones started to come apart and frayed. I think this is a typical problem for headphones unless like the Klipsch, they have a thick cloth material around them. This pair does have some sound deadening but by no means compared the the noise-canceling. I have had these for almost a month and out of the box the sound was great. Im near 20hrs of use and cant tell much of a difference since they day I first used them. In conclusion, this is a great product. My only complaint if any, is that the cord needs to be a little thicker for duration and that it would come with the old style hard case instead of a little cloth bag. The design could be updated a little but like they say, "if it aint broke, dont fix it." They are very functional.
Pros:
Comfort and Sound Quality
Cons:
The cord needs to be thicker, could use slight design upgrade

Bose AE2

Written By Studio Steve, Lincolnshire, Illinois on Friday, December 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I find this product provides what I need in sound quality and noise deadening.
Pros:
Use of this item on air travel work fine. Even though it is not a sound canceling unit, the isolation of noise due to it's construction provides the same effect. And where the soft carry bag as opposed to a hard case allows me to store it in my caryon luggage easier.

Bose AE2 Headphones

Written By Jim S, Eugene, OR on Friday, October 05, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The headphones are everything I wanted in headphones. Excellent sound quality, light and comfortable. My only complaint is that they should have come with a 1/4" plug or an adaptor. I had to buy an adaptor in order to use them with my Sony receiver. An alternative would have been to include a second cord, as the one included is detachable from the headphones.

Except for that, I am very pleased. The sound, comfort and quality are up to the high standards that Bose sets.

Bass freq??

Written By Anonymous, Georgia on Wednesday, June 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the sound but the bass isn't the same as my last pair I bought 5 years ago... Seems the shells are shaped differently and its just a bit softer now. But these are still awesome!
Pros:
comfort, portability, sound !!! still get a bit of the outside noise but its negligible.
Cons:
bass seems different and a bit attenuated....

Bose AE2 wins the comfort war.

Written By Monti, Chesapeake, VA on Tuesday, June 21, 2011

I purchased these from Crutchfield after I sold my Sennheiser 280HD Pros. The Sennheisers were just not comfortable and although the headphones were fairly light the coiled cord was very heavy. I've tried on Bose headphones in other stores and was always impressed by their "comfort". Sound quality is meaningless if they hurt when you wear them. So I decided on the AE2s. I have noise-cancelling Audio Technica earbuds for travel so I use these at home. In a nutshell the lightness and comfort are superb. These produce pleasing sound across the spectrum of music I listen to which is mostly 70s and 80s. The cord is straight, light, and user replaceable. The case supplied is a plastic bag and is a joke. I put them in a hard case to protect them. 4/5 stars. Would have given them a 5 if they supplied a decent case. At Bose prices, it's the least they could do.

My teens love these, and I feel better about them.

Written By Tracy, Zionsville, IN on Tuesday, May 10, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was concerned about the in-the-ear ear buds my children wore constantly
with their IPODs. When our Junior in high school developed tinnitus, I ordered
these for him and his younger brother. The tinnitus is decreasing, and may be
related to seasonal allergies, but the doctor said that over-the-ear headphones
were safer for hearing life. Our son envisions a career in music production
(behind the scenes) and/or composition. His hearing is very important to us.
The sound quality is what my boys love about these headphones. The BOSE
name gets respect from their peers, as well!

Bose AE2

Written By ChrisK, Aurora, IL on Wednesday, April 20, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A rival speaker rep once told me "Bose blows" and he didn't mean this in a nice
way. Since then I've been skeptical of Bose products. When I wanted new
headphones though I chose these AE2, and I'm glad I did. They deliver great
sound with good bass. Not active noise cancellation, but that means I don't need
to worry about batteries. It does keep a lot of background noise to a minimum
though. It is really light weight and fits comfortably around my ears. I don't
like the on ear feel of other sets. My one negative is that I comes with a plain
nylon sack for storage. I ended up buying a case for the Quiet Comfort 15 for
$25 + tax; and though it doesn't fit perfectly, it does work to protect these
headphones. Also Crutchfield service is awesome and I received these in just 2
days from order.

I really like these headphones

Written By neurodoc, Seattle, WA on Sunday, December 12, 2010

I hesitate to review headphones anymore since enjoyment of them is particularly subjective.
Fortunately, you can bring your own player to a Bose store and listen to your own music
and decide for yourself. I listen mostly to instrumental classical music and jazz. These are
easily my favorite headphones and I own Grado, Sennheiser, and Sony monitor. There is
amazing detail and clarity. The bass is strong but well defined and tight. The sound seems
well balanced across the frequency range. These headphones are remarkably light and
comfortable for extended periods. Also, the cord doesn't twist up on itself like the Grados
and isn't coiled and heavy like the Sonys. Singers sound very natural but just slightly quieter
than you might expect. However, a small increase in listening volume corrected the problem.
