Sennheiser

Our take on the Sennheiser RS 180

by Kristen Schaub

Great headphone sound goes wireless

Sennheiser's RS 180 wireless headphones let you enjoy superb sound that won't disturb family members or housemates. Advanced "Open-Aire" speaker technology delivers clear, natural-sounding detail, while the Automatic Level Control smooths out variances in volume — quiet dialogue is easier to hear, and loud commercials and explosions are kept in check. The luxurious velour earpads sit around your ears to seal out external noise. And with a listening range of up to 320 feet, you can roam freely throughout your living area — make popcorn during TV commercials, look through a photo album in another room, or stay up for a late-night listening session while your spouse sleeps soundly next to you.

Exceptionally "Kleer™" wireless technology

The RS 180s use Kleer wireless technology to deliver uncompressed stereo sound. Unlike other wireless technologies, Kleer delivers lossless, CD-quality digital audio, which means you won't be able to tell the difference between these headphones and your wired ones. Multi-receiver mode allows up to four people using Sennheiser Kleer headphones to listen to the same audio source, so you can easily share music, movies, or TV shows with your friends and family. (Add-on HDR 180 headsets available separately.)

Never misplace your headphones with the multi-purpose transmitter

The multi-purpose transmitter keeps your headphones charged up and ready to go. It also doubles as a docking station, so you'll never forget where you put them. Wireless setup is easy — just connect the transmitter to a spare headphone jack or RCA audio output using the included cable. Then plug the transmitter into an AC power outlet. Automatic tuning does the rest, pairing with the headphones for interference-free sound.

From the review Sennheiser RS 180 wireless headphones -- wi-fidelity

"The big story, though, was the sound quality. The RS 180 transmitter sends an uncompressed 2.4GHz audio signal to the headphones, so the sound I was getting was robust and full. Of course, different sound sources have different qualities. When I listened to an Internet radio station with a compressed 128Kpbs stream, it didn't sound as good over the 'phones as the Apple Lossless tracks streamed from my music library. But relatively speaking, the radio stream still had a fair amount of sonic detail and presence."

    Sennheiser RS 180

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For us with marginal hearing this sytem is top notch. The sound quality is exactly what we were looking for. Unfortunately the engineers did not see fit to consider that people who are hard of hearing, many times are also getting up there in age and don't need the frustration of Multi Function swithches. Maybe a dollar more and they could have made the headset perfect!
    Pros:
    Excellent sound quality.
    Cons:
    Mulifunction switch

    Headphones for the home

Written By Great, reliable, surprisingly deep bass, Parker CO on Thursday, March 21, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying, they are wireless. For wireless sound, this is a phenomenal product. Very nice highs, and lows met. I hear 60% more sound over the television (Samsung ES8000 60" LED HDTV). Dramatically improved over the tv speakers. The only reason for the 4 star is I OWN the RS 220s - FREAKING AMAZING SOUND. The RS 220s cost a tidy sum though by comparison. This is an easy late night tv watching pick up, or to keep the house noise down. Very comfortable too unlike other brands. Sennheiser makes them light, easy to wear, easy to recharge.
    Pros:
Comfort and pricing are both exceptional.
    Cons:
Just a few dropouts once in awhile.

    Incredible Headphones

Written By David K, Saint Petersburg, FL on Sunday, February 24, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What an incredible headset. I wear hearing aids and when I had an older model of the same headset, the feedback could only be avoided if I wore the headset over my hearing aids rather than my ears. Looked stupid, felt stupid and didn't work all that well. This one...wow, no feed back, wear them right over my ears with the hearing aids on and they work GREAT.
    Pros:
Can watch TV or listen to music with my volume setting not my wife's.
    Cons:
well the only con I can think of is the price, but I'd pay even more if it were more expensive. I love the quality of the sound.

Owned the RS 180 for 2 years, 1 month and the transmitter failed. Transmitter will not turn on.
    Pros:

    Cons:
Awfully expensive equipment to have fail so quickly. Might as well buy another brand than pay the repair cost.

Originally ordered the RS 170. The vinyl ear pads get hot in winter, I can imagine what they fell like in summer. The 170 is closed and I like the open back of the 180. Comfort is unparalleled with the velour earpads. Can wear for hours and hours. Awesome sound. Worth every penny
    Pros:
Sound quality, solid bass response, 5star comfort, lightweight
    Cons:
No real need for left and right sound balance IMO

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 2nd set of Sennheiser RS headphones. My previous pair the 120's were discontinued just a few years ago. the difference between those and these new 180's is staggering. Nothing but improvement from volume and balence button locations to the super extended clear sound range to the comfort and extended bass response. a minor incovenence is having to let the phones and base resync before each use but after a week of use that becomes less importent and just a thing to watch as the blue lights flash fastly and then sync into a slow togetherness of harmony.
    Pros:
range of signal pickup ability to hear others speak to you even at the highest volume levels softness and breathability of speaker surrounds
    Cons:
inability to completely block out surrounding close-by noise

    Sennheisser RS 180

Written By Bob, Mineola, NY on Friday, December 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent headphones! Very comfortable with good sound, wireless range, comfort and battery life. As other reviewers commented there are some minor cons, however the pros make up for it. The freedom to walk around my home listening to my choice of music, movie, etc at an enjoyable sound level without disturbing anyone else (late night) is great.
    Pros:
Great sound quality with excellent spacial sound. I've yet to run the batteries out with regular charging (I've used them up to 8 hrs). The range is very good but I've found it is somewhat reliant on signal strength to the receiver. FM does not have the range that a digital source or satellite radio (with rooftop antenna). The headset does not get static, it merely goes silent until the signal strength is sufficient. Easy to set up and operate. Charges easily.
    Cons:
The buttons are not easy to distinguish, very close together. The flashing green light when the headset is active can be annoying if wearing them in bed in a dark room. It's not noticeable during normal movie use, etc. The volume could have a slightly lower minimum for wear when going to sleep, just a notch too loud.

these are not noise cancelling headphones(that's why the low noise cancelling rating), and all head phones look geeky, they are uncool
    Pros:
these head phones sound better with new school 5.1 and 7.1 recorded music than 2 channel huge stereo speakers (tweeter, midrange, woofer)
    Cons:
old school music that was recorded using a 2 channel stereo e.g. Van Valen sounds better on my 2 channel stereo speakers.

    RS 180

Written By Ron G, Cedar Bayou, Tx on Saturday, July 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I want to commend my Crutchfield Contact Lee on his excellent handling of my questions and order. The RS 180 has fantastic sound qualities. The only shortcoming is in the volume and on/off switch for the headset. I have not been able to develop a feel for identifying them by touch. If Sennheiser would add a mute button for muting TV advertisement that would probably be the button I would use most of the time. The buttons (other than on/off) would seldom be used. Overall an outstanding buy.
    Pros:
    Great sound, comfortable, great range
    Cons:
Volume buttons on headset too close to the on/off button, could use a mute button

    Sennheiser RS180-Good but not perfect

The quality of sound is great & the fit comfortable, but my wife tells me that it bleeds sound that she can hear when I turn the volume up. I have to be careful to keep it below a certain level when she's sitting next to me, or she gets an annoying secondary sound feed from my headphones.
    Pros:
    Great Sound. Comfortable fit.
    Cons:
    Sound bleeds to adjacent viewers.
